to seeing the first event that John records for us. 00:00:33.399 --> 00:00:37.539 This morning we're going to be talking about John the Baptizer. 00:00:39.039 --> 00:00:43.579 Just like in the Gospel of Mark, this is where John chooses to start the story. 00:00:44.519 --> 00:00:48.179 John has been very clear that this isn't the beginning of Jesus' story, 00:00:48.760 --> 00:00:51.700 that his story actually goes back to the very beginning. 00:00:52.159 --> 00:00:56.579 And back then he was with God and was God. 00:00:56.579 --> 00:01:00.699 But as far as the events of Jesus' story goes, 00:01:00.839 --> 00:01:05.319 this is the place that he chooses to begin with John the Baptizer. 00:01:05.439 --> 00:01:10.379 And we kind of skipped over some of those verses in verses 6 to 8 and in 00:01:25.740 --> 00:01:28.480 John 1 verse 1, John writes this, 00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:32.120 In the beginning was the Word, 00:01:32.760 --> 00:01:35.100 and the Word was with God, 00:01:35.460 --> 00:01:37.700 and the Word was God. 00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:41.880 He was with God in the beginning. 00:01:43.300 --> 00:01:46.000 Through him all things were made. 00:01:47.080 --> 00:01:50.859 Without him nothing was made that has been made. 00:01:50.859 --> 00:01:54.019 In him was life. 00:01:54.019 --> 00:01:59.120 And the life was the light of all mankind. 00:02:00.159 --> 00:02:02.420 The light different John. 00:02:45.939 --> 00:02:48.359 He's referring to John the baptizer. 00:02:49.240 --> 00:02:51.460 And this man, he says in verse 6, 00:02:51.699 --> 00:02:53.379 was sent from God. 00:02:54.120 --> 00:02:57.539 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 00:02:58.859 --> 00:03:02.479 And John's purpose, John tells us, 00:03:03.139 --> 00:03:08.979 was to be a witness and to testify concerning the light. 00:03:09.620 --> 00:03:13.840 He came as a witness to testify concerning the light. 00:03:13.840 --> 00:03:18.319 Now what light is John referring to? 00:03:19.219 --> 00:03:21.180 We see this in the context, 00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:24.159 in what has come before and in what comes after. 00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:28.740 John is talking about the Word, 00:03:29.420 --> 00:03:31.819 who was with God and was God, 00:03:32.259 --> 00:03:33.780 even back in the beginning, 00:03:33.900 --> 00:03:35.259 before all things were made. 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:37.439 And in verse 4 he says, 00:03:37.439 --> 00:03:39.159 in him, in the Word, 00:03:39.259 --> 00:03:39.900 was life. 00:03:40.900 --> 00:03:42.079 And the life, 00:03:42.139 --> 00:03:45.680 he actually names the Word using a different name, 00:03:45.759 --> 00:03:48.300 and the life was the light 00:03:48.300 --> 00:03:50.639 of all mankind. 00:03:51.780 --> 00:03:54.039 The light is a person. 00:03:54.039 --> 00:03:58.400 And we see that really clearly down in verse 9. 00:03:58.599 --> 00:03:59.039 He says, 00:03:59.419 --> 00:04:01.959 the true light that gives light to everyone 00:04:01.959 --> 00:04:03.859 was coming into the world. 00:04:04.359 --> 00:04:06.319 He was in the world. 00:04:07.199 --> 00:04:12.180 So the light that John came to bear witness to 00:04:12.180 --> 00:04:14.859 and to testify about was a person. 00:04:15.019 --> 00:04:16.899 And if we keep reading this all the way down, 00:04:16.980 --> 00:04:19.480 we see very clearly that it's Jesus. 00:06:12.720 the Word, 00:06:12.939 --> 00:06:14.240 who became flesh, 00:06:15.040 --> 00:06:15.700 the Son, 00:06:16.300 --> 00:06:17.540 who came from the Father. 00:06:18.620 --> 00:06:20.120 John with his finger. 00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:51.920 This is the one. 00:06:53.639 --> 00:06:55.740 There was a time in John's ministry 00:06:55.740 --> 00:06:57.399 when his message changed. 00:06:58.300 --> 00:06:59.680 And you can see that 00:06:59.680 --> 00:07:01.780 very clearly in verse 15. 00:07:01.779 --> 00:07:04.339 His message for some time was, 00:07:04.779 --> 00:07:05.779 He who comes, 00:08:24.540 --> 00:08:26.000 In fact, we even know that 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:27.139 from Luke's Gospel 00:08:27.139 --> 00:08:29.079 that John the Baptizer was born 00:08:29.079 --> 00:08:32.340 before Jesus was born. 00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:36.139 And so in a very true sense, 00:08:36.320 --> 00:08:39.480 Jesus came after John. 00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:43.000 But John does not want there
