just pause there for a second. 00:01:07.560 --> 00:01:09.780 I think one of the things that Pilate is trying to do is he had 00:01:09.780 --> 00:01:10.899 Jesus beaten. 00:01:12.159 --> 00:01:13.280 He knew he was innocent. 00:01:13.280 --> 00:01:18.120 But he wanted to see if he could get the crowd to see something in Jesus. 00:01:18.320 --> 00:01:20.320 Like that, this innocent man was just beaten. 00:01:20.500 --> 00:01:22.780 And maybe the crowd would go, okay, yeah, let him go. 00:01:23.620 --> 00:01:24.760 But it didn't work. 00:01:24.760 --> 00:01:31.000 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, crucify him, 00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:31.980 crucify him. 00:01:32.580 --> 00:01:37.740 Pilate said to them, take him yourselves and crucify him for I find no guilt himself the son of God. 00:01:47.740 --> 00:01:51.400 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 00:01:51.400 --> 00:01:56.800 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, 00:02:22.680 And maybe there's something he can do to leverage his own interests, his own 00:02:22.680 --> 00:02:23.300 priorities. 00:02:23.419 --> 00:02:25.400 And that's what we see in Pilate, right? 00:02:25.439 --> 00:02:27.419 He's saying, well, maybe this is a god here. 00:02:27.740 --> 00:02:29.120 But Jesus was silent. 00:02:30.219 --> 00:02:31.379 Gave no answer. 00:02:31.819 --> 00:09:51.000 But there's a chain of betrayal in what's going on in the scene. 00:09:51.079 --> 00:09:53.819 Where there's all kinds of people that are missing who Jesus is. 00:09:53.860 --> 00:09:54.879 There's a chain of betrayal. 00:09:55.779 --> 00:10:00.000 And the second thing, there is a distraction of a dead-end priority. 00:10:00.919 --> 00:10:02.899 All of which we participate in. 00:10:02.939 --> 00:10:03.600 Both of those. 00:10:04.620 --> 00:10:06.279 Let me talk about the chain of betrayal. 00:10:06.279 --> 00:10:08.100 Look at the last part of verse 11. 00:10:08.839 --> 00:10:11.399 Where it says, therefore, this is Jesus speaking. 00:10:11.819 --> 00:10:16.240 Therefore, he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin. 00:10:16.319 --> 00:10:17.360 Now what does that mean? 00:10:17.740 --> 00:10:20.600 I think one of the things that I would ask you to sort of keep in mind. 00:10:21.720 --> 00:10:23.299 In Dante's Inferno. 00:10:23.740 --> 00:10:25.059 Maybe you're familiar with that. 00:10:25.139 --> 00:10:26.579 I'm not super familiar with it. 00:10:26.620 --> 00:10:29.120 I've read enough to get some nuggets for this sermon. 00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:30.799 But this is really helpful. 00:10:31.460 --> 00:10:40.759 The deepest, deepest part of hell that Dante describes is the ninth ring, which is treachery. 00:10:41.179 --> 00:10:42.980 Another way you'd say it, it's betrayal. 00:10:43.740 --> 00:10:48.799 In that deep ninth, deepest part of hell is a frozen lake. 00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:55.719 And in that frozen lake, there are people in various points of being stuck in that frozen lake. 00:10:56.079 --> 00:10:58.299 And there's four rings around the lake. 00:10:59.019 --> 00:11:03.959 The first ring are people who have betrayed their family. 00:11:04.579 --> 00:11:06.859 And that first ring is named after Cain. 00:11:07.099 --> 00:11:08.019 That makes sense, right? 00:11:08.139 --> 00:11:09.859 Cain, he betrayed his brother. 00:11:09.979 --> 00:11:10.979 He betrayed his whole family. 00:11:12.299 --> 00:11:16.139 Then there's the second ring is the people that betray their friends or their guests. 00:11:16.139 --> 00:11:18.919 And this idea that, you know, you betray your friends. 00:11:19.740 --> 00:11:21.980 The second is our people who betray their country. 00:11:22.220 --> 00:11:26.980 And the final fourth ring, the worst ring of all, are people who betray their Lord. 00:11:27.500 --> 00:11:28.860 And it's named after Judas. 00:11:29.299 --> 00:11:29.899 That ring. 00:11:31.360 --> 00:11:35.659 So, when Jesus is saying, like, who has the greater sin here? 00:11:36.460 --> 00:11:39.699 You know, who has delivered me has the greater sin. 00:11:40.620 --> 00:11:44.500 And so we have to sort of see things like a chain that goes back in time. 00:11:44.500 --> 00:11:46.559 Because you can start with Pilate. 00:11:46.679 --> 00:11:48.679 And you go, yeah, Pilate knows he's innocent. 00:11:48.799 --> 00:11:49.860 But he's still going to turn to Moses. 00:11:49.980 --> 00:11:52.379 He still, he doesn't, he just kind of washes his hand. 00:11:52.500 --> 00:11:55.080 I mean, he doesn't kind of, he actually washes his hands, right? 00:11:57.159 --> 00:12:04.059 But Jesus was betrayed and turned over to Pilate from Caiaphas, the high priest. 00:12:04.460 --> 00:12:06.919 You know, and that's sort of the religious part of the world. 00:12:07.960 --> 00:12:10.539 But Jesus came to them from Judas. 00:12:10.539 --> 00:12:10.779 Judas. 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:15.839 But what Jesus is pointing to is something that we have to think. 00:12:16.299 --> 00:12:19.879 Because this is cosmic treason on the biggest possible level. 00:12:20.740 --> 00:12:24.259 And we start to get some clues from, if we look at John 13, 2. 00:12:24.379 --> 00:12:30.899 During supper, when the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him. 00:12:30.980 --> 00:12:34.539 So we know, okay, it was the devil getting Judas to do this. 00:12:34.579 --> 00:12:34.899 Certainly. 00:12:35.099 --> 00:12:36.059 But he had agency. 00:12:36.259 --> 00:12:37.299 And so he's responsible. 00:12:37.899 --> 00:12:39.159 Judas is a betrayer. 00:12:39.159 --> 00:12:40.000 There's no doubt. 00:12:41.459 --> 00:12:44.579 But we have to, what's going on is there's something even bigger. 00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:46.299 And we get a clue. 00:12:47.480 --> 00:12:49.159 Because this goes back to the garden. 00:12:49.559 --> 00:12:50.539 Back to Adam and Eve. 00:12:50.639 --> 00:12:56.679 --> 00:12:58.219 You are of the father, the devil. 00:12:58.480 --> 00:13:02.319 And you will be, and your will is to do your father's desires. 00:13:02.919 --> 00:13:05.039 He was a murderer from the beginning. 00:13:05.179 --> 00:13:06.819 So this gets us back to the garden. 00:13:06.820 --> 00:13:16.360 The beauty of Jesus has the potential and will be lost on you unless you see yourself as part of the chain of betrayers. 00:13:16.780 --> 00:13:20.340 Because if you start with Pilate and you go back in time, you go back to Genesis. 00:13:20.840 --> 00:13:22.260 Then you turn around and come back. 00:13:22.400 --> 00:13:25.940 Through Pilate all the way to now, you and I have betrayed Jesus. 00:13:27.240 --> 00:13:28.220 It's called sin. 00:13:28.220 --> 00:13:31.759 00:13:37.379 --> 00:13:39.200 What was going on in the garden of Eden? 00:13:41.080 --> 00:13:53.460 See, your betrayal of God's love and his authority is at its most basic when you take the reins of God's authority and you decide for yourself what is good and what is evil. 00:13:53.460 --> 00:14:03.139 In the garden, Adam and Eve reflected the image of God, but only to a point because God said, you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 00:14:04.300 --> 00:14:05.120 That's all. 00:14:05.740 --> 00:14:12.080 You reflect my image, but you don't get to reflect my image in God's plan is for us to trust, surrender, and enjoy him in communion with him, to know him. 00:15:17.559 --> 00:15:23.439 And the thing that's separating you is your desire to determine for your own
