Amen. 00:04:45.399 --> 00:04:49.599 Well, as we take up the passage of Scripture this morning in Revelation chapter 5, 00:04:49.959 --> 00:04:56.000 we have to admit that one of the basic principles of Bible study is that we pay attention to context. 00:04:56.000 --> 00:05:02.160 And context is always an important thing because it helps us frame the ministry of the Word of God 00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:04.899 and understand what we are actually looking at. 00:05:05.339 --> 00:05:08.000 And as we look at this passage this morning, 00:05:08.339 --> 00:05:14.920 I want you to kind of mark the fact that the book of Revelation is a book that kind of gives us a broad overview 00:05:14.920 --> 00:05:17.339 of the way in which the story ends. 00:05:18.560 --> 00:05:21.680 It tells us, and at one point in the book of Revelation, 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:27.560 John the Apostle pens these words that the book of Revelation talks about things that had happened, 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:30.379 things that are happening, and things that will happen. 00:05:31.180 --> 00:05:33.319 And so as we think about the book of Revelation, 00:05:33.500 --> 00:05:36.740 we understand that it is a wonderful and intriguing window 00:05:36.740 --> 00:05:40.899 through which God gives us a little picture into the future 00:05:40.899 --> 00:05:44.280 and helps us understand not only what the future is going to be about, 00:05:44.340 --> 00:05:48.160 but it really gives us a big picture of the grand theme of the whole Bible. 00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:51.240 It tells us things that we need to pay attention to. 00:05:51.920 --> 00:05:56.660 And really, when you stop and think about what is the central theme of Scripture, 00:05:57.080 --> 00:06:01.240 without question, we would say without a hesitation, it's Jesus Christ, isn't it? 00:06:01.580 --> 00:06:08.360 He is the center of the story, and the entire Scripture revolves around Him. 00:06:09.160 --> 00:06:12.780 So I want you to understand that as we pick up here in chapter 5, 00:06:12.779 --> 00:06:18.459 we find that the first three chapters of the book of Revelation have been given to a large degree 00:06:18.459 --> 00:06:25.319 in giving explicit instructions to the seven churches regarding their spiritual state. 00:06:26.059 --> 00:06:31.799 Following that, we have chapter 4 in which John the Apostle opens up 00:06:31.799 --> 00:06:33.979 and gives us a picture of the glory of heaven, 00:06:34.439 --> 00:06:39.519 and you would say in some sense that chapter 4 in particular is about God the Father. 00:06:39.519 --> 00:06:44.859 Woven into that is the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the presence of the Holy Spirit. 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.259 And then we come to chapter 5, and it begins in a very interesting way 00:06:49.259 --> 00:06:54.779 because we have a question that is posed by an angel to John the Baptist, or John, 00:06:55.060 --> 00:06:57.319 regarding, okay, who can open the scroll? 00:06:57.899 --> 00:07:02.299 And the idea of having all of history kind of unfold in front of him, 00:07:02.659 --> 00:07:05.859 something that was dear to John's heart at the moment, 00:07:05.860 --> 00:07:10.340 he suddenly finds out that there is no immediate response to opening the scroll. 00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:11.980 And how does he handle it? 00:07:12.540 --> 00:07:13.480 How does he handle it? 00:07:14.220 --> 00:07:16.040 What does it tell us happens in the Scripture? 00:07:16.800 --> 00:07:18.720 Here's an adult man who is doing what? 00:07:21.199 --> 00:07:22.819 He's not sniffing. He is what? 00:07:23.800 --> 00:07:25.759 He's sobbing. He's crying. 00:07:26.460 --> 00:07:26.939 Loudly. 00:07:27.879 --> 00:07:30.780 Why is it? Because of his interest and affection 00:07:30.780 --> 00:07:33.319 in seeing what God was going to do 00:07:33.319 --> 00:07:37.779 and seeing the glory of God, and here is this kind of path that he was on. 00:07:37.839 --> 00:07:39.060 Suddenly it comes to a halt. 00:07:39.500 --> 00:07:41.959 And why did it happen that way in part? 00:07:42.339 --> 00:07:44.120 How many of you discovered that on occasion 00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:47.259 God has kind of brought a pause 00:07:47.259 --> 00:07:49.860 in the things that he's been doing in your life, 00:07:49.899 --> 00:07:52.839 and it actually amplifies what lies in front 00:07:52.839 --> 00:07:54.100 to a certain degree, doesn't it? 00:07:54.279 --> 00:07:55.860 And here it plays out that way, 00:07:55.959 --> 00:07:59.259 that John, anticipating, hearing what was coming next, 00:07:59.259 --> 00:08:00.959 suddenly there's a pause. 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:05.719 And when the pause is not immediately fulfilled 00:08:06.459 --> 00:08:08.800 or that question is not immediately fulfilled, 00:08:08.899 --> 00:08:10.779 it kind of amps up his emotion. 00:08:11.139 --> 00:08:13.560 And in the backdrop of that, he really begins to sob 00:08:13.560 --> 00:08:15.980 until he is given some encouraging news. 00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:17.000 What is that news? 00:08:17.599 --> 00:08:19.159 You look there in the passage, 00:08:19.839 --> 00:08:21.879 and in Revelation chapter 5, 00:08:21.939 --> 00:08:22.240 it says, 00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:23.740 Weep no more, verse 5, 00:08:24.220 --> 00:08:25.879 because we want you to know 00:08:25.879 --> 00:08:28.060 that the lion of the tribe of Judah, 00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:28.900 the root of David, 00:08:29.240 --> 00:08:29.960 has conquered, 00:08:30.139 --> 00:08:32.180 so he that he will open the scroll, 00:08:32.519 --> 00:08:34.200 and he's going to lay it all out before you. 00:08:34.240 --> 00:08:35.320 When you hear those words, 00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:38.200 the lion 00:08:56.240 --> 00:08:59.019 The one who's going to bring all of history 00:08:59.019 --> 00:09:00.519 to its culmination 00:09:00.519 --> 00:09:03.240 and is going to bring the power and glory of God 00:09:03.240 --> 00:09:05.659 to the forefront is going to be the lion. 00:09:07.240 --> 00:09:09.779 And yet we find that on the heels 00:09:09.779 --> 00:09:11.599 of that verbal announcement, 00:09:11.839 --> 00:09:15.359 then John is given insight that's rather stunning. 00:09:16.359 --> 00:09:17.679 You look there, and it says, 00:09:17.799 --> 00:09:19.519 In between the throne, verse 6, 00:09:19.799 --> 00:09:22.799 and the four living creatures, 00:09:22.919 --> 00:09:24.039 now just imagine this, 00:09:24.279 --> 00:09:25.279 here's an announcement, 00:09:25.699 --> 00:09:26.879 don't cry, John, 00:09:27.199 --> 00:09:29.799 because the lion of the tribe of Judah 00:09:29.799 --> 00:09:32.079 is the one who's going to open the scroll. 00:09:32.479 --> 00:09:35.079 Now, having heard that with his ears, 00:09:35.319 --> 00:09:37.419 he looks, and in verse 6 he says, 00:09:37.740 --> 00:09:40.000 And I saw a lamb standing 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:42.899 as though it had been, what? 00:09:42.899 --> 00:09:43.899 slain. 00:09:43.899 --> 00:09:44.899 He was slain. 00:09:48.899 --> 00:09:51.399 As I was praying and thinking through 00:09:51.399 --> 00:09:53.819 those words in particular, 00:09:54.019 --> 00:09:55.500 I had to stop and think 00:09:55.500 --> 00:09:59.120 that for the most part, 00:10:00.120 --> 00:10:02.740 the vast majority of you who are sitting here
