don't even include some of the personal difficulties that you've had to face the first 00:06:15.279 --> 00:06:15.939 half of this year. 00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:22.979 For some of you, 2023 so far, you've had to deal with maybe health scares. 00:06:22.980 --> 00:06:25.900 For some of you, maybe the loss of loved ones. 00:06:26.460 --> 00:06:31.819 For some of you, relationship conflicts in the would be even nicer to know how those things would work out, wouldn't it? 00:06:40.279 --> 00:06:45.259 Well, obviously, none of us have the superpower to know everything. 00:06:45.679 --> 00:06:50.139 But David here in our psalm this morning reminds us of someone who does have that power. 00:06:51.459 --> 00:06:51.559 All right. 00:06:51.619 --> 00:06:56.539 Psalm 139 is a beautiful psalm that expounds so many beautiful truths about God. 00:06:56.619 --> 00:07:01.439 But one truth that comes across crystal clear is the truth that God is omniscient. 00:07:01.859 --> 00:07:04.439 That he knows everything about everything. 00:07:04.779 --> 00:07:08.399 And specifically, he knows everything about you. 00:07:08.399 --> 00:07:09.399 Right? 00:07:10.459 --> 00:07:12.159 He knows everything you're going through. 00:07:12.339 --> 00:07:14.439 He knows everything you are struggling with. 00:07:14.519 --> 00:07:17.479 And he knows how he will work those things out. 00:07:19.399 --> 00:07:22.579 Maybe for some of you, you are going through a difficult time right now. 00:07:22.639 --> 00:07:26.099 Maybe you're experiencing a time in the valley of darkness. 00:07:26.099 --> 00:07:27.019 And you don't know why. 00:07:27.139 --> 00:07:31.199 And you can't comprehend or understand why you are experiencing it. 00:07:32.339 --> 00:07:36.839 But even though that may be the case, I want you to know this morning that you can trust 00:07:36.839 --> 00:07:39.119 in a God who knows what you're going through. 00:07:39.579 --> 00:07:43.759 And especially in a God who knows how he will work those things out for you. 00:07:45.039 --> 00:07:45.179 All right. 00:07:45.219 --> 00:07:47.739 David needed to be reminded of that truth himself. 00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:50.620 And you and I need a reminder of that truth this morning. 00:07:50.620 --> 00:07:55.739 And so what I hope to share today is that because God fully knows everything about you, 00:07:56.579 --> 00:07:58.779 you can fully trust in him. 00:07:59.779 --> 00:08:00.000 All right. 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.779 Because God fully knows everything about you, you can fully trust in him. 00:08:04.779 --> 00:08:08.239 And we're going to look at three ways in which God knows things about us. 00:08:09.019 --> 00:08:12.099 And the first is God knows what your situation is. 00:08:12.679 --> 00:08:15.219 Second is he knows where your story began. 00:08:15.699 --> 00:08:18.259 And third is he knows what you're searching for. 00:08:19.079 --> 00:08:23.659 What your situation is, where your story began, and what you're searching for. 00:08:24.799 --> 00:08:25.219 All right. 00:08:25.239 --> 00:08:27.199 So first, God knows what your situation is. 00:08:27.199 --> 00:08:32.480 David starts off this psalm by painting a pretty clear picture that God knows all about you 00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:33.740 and all about your circumstances. 00:08:34.519 --> 00:08:34.600 Right. 00:08:34.679 --> 00:08:39.100 In verse two, David says, God knows when you sit down and rise up, he discerns your thoughts. 00:08:39.639 --> 00:08:41.980 Verse three, God knows your path and your lying down. 00:08:42.059 --> 00:08:43.319 He's acquainted with all your ways. 00:08:43.879 --> 00:08:48.279 Verse four, God knows what you will say even before you say it. 00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:50.240 All right. 00:08:50.240 --> 00:08:55.179 David is describing how comprehensive God's knowledge is of you and what you're going through. 00:08:55.179 --> 00:08:57.939 There's not one aspect of your life he doesn't know about. 00:08:59.139 --> 00:08:59.199 Right. 00:08:59.299 --> 00:09:05.120 God knows when you are resting at home, when you're relaxing, maybe at a vacation by the beach. 00:09:05.199 --> 00:09:07.659 I don't know where Jonathan and Andrew are, but maybe they're vacationing somewhere. 00:09:07.719 --> 00:09:09.079 And God knows that they're relaxing. 00:09:09.679 --> 00:09:13.579 But God also knows when you're struggling to drag yourself out of bed on a Monday morning 00:09:13.579 --> 00:09:15.379 to go to work or go to school. 00:09:17.159 --> 00:09:17.239 Right. 00:09:17.439 --> 00:09:21.000 God knows when you've accomplished something great like graduating college or high school 00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:21.620 or getting married. 00:09:21.779 --> 00:09:26.460 And he knows when you're struggling potentially to find a new job and make, to make ends meet 00:09:26.460 --> 00:09:29.500 or you're going to the doctor's office for a scary diagnosis. 00:09:32.320 --> 00:09:35.679 And God doesn't just know what your situation is. 00:09:36.220 --> 00:09:40.059 God also knows how you will respond to those situations. 00:09:40.919 --> 00:09:41.019 Right. 00:09:41.039 --> 00:09:43.759 He knows your opinions about what is going on in the world. 00:09:43.759 --> 00:09:47.539 He knows what you think about what is going on at work or at school. 00:09:47.679 --> 00:09:51.600 He knows how you feel about what is going on in your family. 00:09:53.139 --> 00:09:57.080 God doesn't just know what you're going to post on social media or tweet before you do it. 00:09:57.360 --> 00:09:59.620 was in San Diego as a youth pastor at a church there at the time. 00:10:13.539 --> 00:10:16.159 And it had been three years since I had seen them in person. 00:10:16.899 --> 00:10:19.180 Because of the pandemic, I had not been able to see them in person. 00:10:19.320 --> 00:10:22.159 So when they came and finally I was able to see them after three years, 00:10:22.180 --> 00:10:25.740 it was a wonderful time to spend with them and hang out with them. 00:10:26.279 --> 00:10:30.639 But what was uncanny to me was how well my mom knew me, 00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:33.759 even after three years of 00:11:01.259 Right. 00:11:01.340 --> 00:11:04.259 And just to dislamour, I do brush my teeth. 00:11:04.299 --> 00:11:05.279 I brush my teeth this morning. 00:11:06.039 --> 00:11:09.720 But that day I had just got back from a youth retreat. 00:11:10.019 --> 00:11:11.259 It was a three-day, two-night youth retreat. 00:11:11.360 --> 00:11:12.059 We got back late. 00:11:12.120 --> 00:11:13.279 I was so tired I crashed. 00:11:13.659 --> 00:11:15.000 And then I slept in. 00:11:15.039 --> 00:11:16.279 So I woke up late to breakfast. 00:11:16.339 --> 00:11:17.220 So I just rushed out of the house. 00:11:17.259 --> 00:11:18.279 So she was correct. 00:11:18.360 --> 00:11:20.220 I had not brushed my teeth that morning. 00:11:20.299 --> 00:11:22.059 And I still, to this day, don't know how she knew. 00:11:23.399 --> 00:11:28.839 But my point in telling that story is if that is how well my earthly mother knew me, 00:11:28.840 --> 00:11:32.060 how much more does our heavenly father know us? 00:11:33.759 --> 00:11:33.920 Right. 00:11:34.040 --> 00:11:38.840 And David here, he gives us at least two reasons why God knows all these things about us. 00:11:38.940 --> 00:11:44.060 And one is 00:11:51.519 I hope you guys could hear all that first part. 00:11:53.279 --> 00:11:57.619 But David gives us at least two reasons why God knows all these things about you. 00:11:57.719 --> 00:12:01.559 One is he's actively and specially interested in you. 00:12:01.559 --> 00:12:07.439 And if you look at verse one with me, David says, God has searched me and known me. 00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:08.500 Right. 00:12:08.559 --> 00:12:13.639 That word search there, it has the idea of like a treasure hunter digging for treasure. 00:12:14.519 --> 00:12:21.059 It has the idea of a lawyer pouring through piles of evidence, preparing for a trial. 00:12:21.839 --> 00:12:29.779 The word is also used in the Old Testament when spies are spying out of land and being thorough in their findings. 00:12:29.779 --> 00:12:30.779 Right. 00:12:31.360 --> 00:12:37.519 David is describing God who takes a special interest and effort to seek you out and to know you. 00:12:38.059 --> 00:12:38.199 Right. 00:12:38.240 --> 00:12:44.559 From knowing your biggest dreams and aspirations down to the smallest detail, like what color socks you chose to wear this morning. 00:12:45.699 --> 00:12:45.819 Right. 00:12:45.899 --> 00:12:52.879 And David isn't saying that God has to do such a thorough search in order to find out and know these things about you. 00:12:53.360 --> 00:12:54.819 We know God's knowledge is infinite. 00:12:55.019 --> 00:12:56.279 God's knowledge is immediate. 00:12:56.279 --> 00:13:02.360 But what David is doing is he's using vivid language to describe how much God knows you. 00:13:04.399 --> 00:13:09.639 And the second reason why God knows what your situation is, is because God is everywhere. 00:13:10.860 --> 00:13:10.980 Right. 00:13:10.980 --> 00:13:13.500 There's no place you can go where God isn't. 00:13:13.559 --> 00:13:15.839 And David asked that rhetorically in verses seven through 10. 00:13:16.259 --> 00:13:19.699 If there was, he asked if there was somewhere he could go that God was not present. 00:13:19.700 --> 00:13:22.980 If he went to heaven, God would be there. 00:13:23.400 --> 00:13:27.200 If he went down to Sheol, which is the place of the dead, God would be there. 00:13:28.060 --> 00:13:31.220 Verse nine talks about if he takes the wings of the morning, which is the east, right? 00:13:31.280 --> 00:13:33.400 Sun rises in the east, God would be there. 00:13:33.480 --> 00:13:38.400 And if he goes and dwells in the uttermost part of the sea and the sea was west for Israel. 00:13:38.480 --> 00:13:40.780 So if he goes west, God would be there. 00:13:40.779 --> 00:13:46.539 No matter where David goes in this universe, God is there. 00:13:48.600 --> 00:13:52.779 You might initially hear that and you might think to yourself, well, that actually sounds a little bit smothering. 00:13:53.480 --> 00:13:56.819 To our American ears, we definitely don't like it when people know everything about us. 00:13:56.879 --> 00:13:59.600 And we for sure don't like it when they follow us everywhere. 00:14:00.459 --> 00:14:05.199 But David here is not describing God so much like Google or Amazon in your house, 00:14:05.259 --> 00:14:08.360 listening to your conversations and then giving you the ads that he thinks you want to buy. 00:14:08.360 --> 00:14:12.960 But David here is more describing God like a loving parent, right? 00:14:12.960 --> 00:14:16.840 Someone who is lovingly and carefully watching over their children. 00:14:18.460 --> 00:14:24.879 God is everywhere with us so that he can hold us and lead us and guide us, like David says there in verse 10. 00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:33.340 God knows our situation and our circumstances not to be nosy, but to help us through them. 00:14:33.340 --> 00:14:40.680 And that's probably the most encouraging truth about God knowing what your situation is. 00:14:41.420 --> 00:14:45.100 God doesn't just know about your present trials and tribulations, but I mentioned 00:14:52.840 David says there, 00:14:52.840 --> 00:15:07.480 David there is getting at the truth that God has a plan for you, that he knows your future, that he has numbered your days. 00:15:07.660 --> 00:15:11.420 And I know that initially when you hear that, we might think that sounds like a threat, right? 00:15:11.480 --> 00:15:13.100 In English, we have an idiom, right? 00:15:13.160 --> 00:15:14.080 Our days being numbered. 00:15:14.240 --> 00:15:16.060 And that sounds like a threat to us. 00:15:16.060 --> 00:15:19.000 But actually here, it should be extremely comforting. 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:27.440 If you are nervous and scared and you're going to the doctor and you're nervous for a diagnosis that the doctor is going to give you, 00:15:27.659 --> 00:15:33.000 you can be confident that there is nothing the doctor can say that will change how many days you have to live. 00:15:33.940 --> 00:15:34.240 Right? 00:15:34.259 --> 00:15:36.259 The doctor can tell you what's going on with your body. 00:15:36.580 --> 00:15:39.580 They can tell you what is going on with your health. 00:15:39.580 --> 00:15:46.480 But there is nothing a doctor can say that will shorten a day of your life because your days rest in the hands of a sovereign God. 00:15:46.480 --> 00:15:53.440 My brothers and sisters, trust in that God who fully knows your situation. 00:15:54.680 --> darkest moment in the history of humanity was when Jesus Christ, 00:23:20.899 --> 00:23:21.379 the son of God, 00:23:21.419 --> 00:23:25.759 was crucified on a Roman cross for your sins and for my sins. 00:23:27.000 --> 00:23:29.599 When God was knitting you together in your mother's womb, 00:23:29.759 --> 00:23:34.399 he knew that his only son was going to be torn apart on the cross for you. 00:23:34.400 --> 00:23:43.120 Jesus was willing to sacrifice himself and experience the ultimate darkness for you and for me. 00:23:45.500 --> 00:23:46.700 But praise God, 00:23:46.920 --> 00:23:49.840 even the ultimate darkness was not too dark for God. 00:23:50.220 --> 00:23:51.380 God knew what he was doing. 00:23:52.080 --> 00:23:53.080 As David says in this psalm, 00:23:53.180 --> 00:23:55.960 truly darkness is as light with God. 00:23:57.140 --> 00:24:00.880 Jesus turned the darkest night in the history of humanity, 00:24:00.880 --> 00:24:03.000 also into our brightest day. 00:24:04.320 --> 00:24:05.860 His death washed our sins away. 00:24:06.000 --> 00:24:06.740 And then three days later, 00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:07.860 he rose from the grave, 00:24:08.020 --> 00:24:14.180 conquering sin and death so that you and I will one day also be guaranteed to rise with him. 00:24:15.760 --> 00:24:22.120 Jesus went through that ultimate darkness so that you and I much God knows him and cares for him, 00:26:00.220 --> 00:26:05.020 how God who formed him and knows all of his shortcomings still loves him and is there for him. 00:26:05.080 --> 00:26:10.900 And so 00:26:36.279 --> 00:26:37.119 high and lifted up, 00:26:37.199 --> 00:26:39.959 and Isaiah realizes that he is a man of unclean lips, 00:26:39.960 --> 00:26:44.880 because he has such a sense of his own sinfulness and unworthiness. 00:26:46.420 --> 00:26:46.819 Right? 00:26:46.880 --> 00:26:55.519 The truth here in Psalm 139 should spur us to want to be killing our own sin and not let our sin be killing us. 00:26:55.519 --> 00:27:02.059 But as you heard verses 19 to 22 read, 00:27:02.099 --> 00:27:03.240 or as you read them yourself, 00:27:03.420 --> 00:27:06.920 maybe you might feel a little bit uncomfortable saying the same things David says there. 00:27:07.579 --> 00:27:07.759 Right? 00:27:07.799 --> 00:27:09.379 How can we pray what David prays, 00:27:09.440 --> 00:27:13.500 asking God to slay the wicked and to hate those who hate God? 00:27:13.500 --> 00:27:15.519 Well, 00:27:15.599 --> 00:27:20.140 you and I can pray those things in the same way that Jesus taught us to pray in the Lord's Prayer. 00:27:21.119 --> 00:27:21.259 Right? 00:27:21.279 --> 00:27:23.019 When you and I pray the words, 00:27:23.119 --> 00:27:24.980 thy kingdom come and thy will be done, 00:27:25.640 --> killing it, 00:27:54.799 --> 00:27:59.079 but we should be searching out how to live our lives in a way that glorifies God, 00:27:59.619 --> 00:28:02.159 that signals to the world that he has saved us, 00:28:02.240 --> 00:28:03.779 that we are his. 00:28:05.159 --> 00:28:08.240 And that's how David ends this Psalm in verses 23 through 24. 00:28:08.579 --> 00:28:08.659 Right? 00:28:08.779 --> 00:28:24.639 To know his worries, 00:28:24.940 --> 00:28:25.720 his hopes, 00:28:25.819 --> 00:28:26.420 his doubts, 00:28:26.680 --> 00:28:27.639 his aspirations. 00:28:27.639 --> 00:28:29.279 And he is looking to God 00:28:29.279 --> 00:28:32.399 to show him how to live amidst all those feelings. 00:28:34.119 --> 00:28:34.399 Well, 00:28:34.420 --> 00:28:36.579 God knew that's what David was looking for, 00:28:36.579 --> 00:28:39.179 and he led David in the way everlasting. 00:28:40.919 --> 00:28:42.859 Is that also your heart's desire? 00:28:43.980 --> 00:28:46.379 Is that also what 00:29:29.820 So I really enjoyed taking his class, 00:29:29.940 --> 00:29:31.420 but one time in the middle of the semester, 00:29:31.539 --> 00:29:32.620 there was a test or a midterm, 00:29:32.840
