ourselves settling into the reality of what the majority of our fellow Canadians in each riding had decided. 00:00:18.780 --> 00:00:22.379 And for many of us, the result was quite disappointing. 00:00:22.379 --> 00:00:38.379 We all have a deep longing in our hearts for a country where righteousness and goodness and justice and peace reign. 00:00:42.460 --> 00:00:52.359 And yet we need to ask ourselves, even if the leader most of us wanted to win had won, could he bring that about in Canada? 00:00:52.380 --> 00:00:56.420 Or was he just better than the other guy? 00:00:58.920 --> 00:01:04.260 Moments like these stir up a deep desire within us for a greater country. 00:01:06.079 --> 00:01:18.040 And what I want to do this morning in our time in the Word is to remind us that we who believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, we have a greater country to which we belong. 00:01:18.719 --> 00:01:21.020 And so this morning's sermon is going to be a little different. 00:01:21.019 --> 00:01:29.199 We're going to meander through a few different passages of Scripture which remind us of the great and certain hope that we have. 00:01:30.399 --> 00:01:34.259 This week I was reminded of Abraham. 00:01:34.260 --> 00:01:52.700 By faith, Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. 00:01:53.800 --> 00:02:00.500 By faith, he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country. 00:02:00.500 --> 00:02:09.840 He lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:20.620 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations whose architect and builder is God. 00:02:20.620 --> 00:02:34.240 And by faith, even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. 00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:49.879 And so from this one man, and he is good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. 00:02:49.879 --> 00:02:56.359 All these people were still living by faith when they died. 00:02:57.560 --> 00:03:00.219 They did not receive the things promised. 00:03:01.159 --> 00:03:10.340 They only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were 00:03:41.220 Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. 00:03:43.680 --> 00:03:46.960 This is from the New Testament book of Hebrews. 00:03:47.900 --> 00:03:52.880 And the author there points us back to the story of Abraham to encourage us. 00:03:53.620 --> 00:03:58.100 His main goal is to illustrate what true faith looks like. 00:03:58.099 --> 00:04:02.239 And so he points us back to Abraham's life. 00:04:03.799 --> 00:04:12.479 There in Canaan, Abraham pitched his tents, trusting the promise that God would give him that land someday as his inheritance. 00:04:13.620 --> 00:04:19.399 And by the end of his life, he owned little more than a burial plot in Canaan. 00:04:21.719 --> 00:04:25.980 God also promised that he would be the father of a great nation through his son Isaac. 00:04:25.980 --> 00:04:33.259 And yet Abraham barely lived to see Isaac's two sons enter their teenage years. 00:04:34.360 --> 00:04:38.220 The words that struck me the most here came in verse 13. 00:04:39.439 --> 00:04:43.560 All these people were still living by faith when they died. 00:04:44.800 --> 00:04:47.080 They did not receive the things promised. 00:05:02.139 What is he saying here? 00:05:03.539 --> 00:05:12.180 He seems to be saying that Abraham continued to trust the promise of God right up until the day that he died. 00:05:12.180 --> 00:05:18.000 Even though he had not yet come to possess the land of Canaan, which was promised. 00:05:19.879 --> 00:05:26.480 In other words, Abraham died believing that God would still yet give him 00:05:43.060 Well, the author of Hebrews gives us a clue. 00:05:44.199 --> 00:05:49.379 There was something in Abraham's faith which looked beyond the present state of things. 00:05:50.379 --> 00:05:57.360 There was something in Abraham's faith which hoped beyond the mere stuff of earth and the way things were in his day. 00:05:57.360 --> 00:06:04.139 In faith, he reasoned that there would be a future day in which God would make good on his promise. 00:06:04.980 --> 00:06:11.660 And if not before Abraham died, then after in the resurrection. 00:06:13.639 --> 00:06:18.620 There would be
