Let's read verse 5 and verse 6. 00:00:08.839 --> 00:00:09.400 ! 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:53.920 I don't know how familiar you are with the book of Revelation, but there's probably two main myths about the book of Revelation. 00:00:53.920 --> 00:01:05.740 One is it's about the future. Many people who speculate about these things say that the book of Revelation talks about things that will happen in the future. 00:01:06.420 --> 00:01:09.859 And they read all sorts of amazing things into the book. 00:01:10.620 --> 00:01:19.599 And especially in these days of power politics in the Middle East, there are many folks who say, well, it's obvious, it's all there in the book of Revelation. 00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:28.219 Well, the book of Revelation, frankly, may allude to the future, but it is very much a book which talks about today. 00:01:28.659 --> 00:01:33.259 So that's mythology number one, that it's a book entirely about the future. 00:01:34.979 --> 00:01:37.519 Mythology number two is that it's a difficult book. 00:01:38.119 --> 00:01:40.060 Now, there's a certain degree of truth in that. 00:01:40.379 --> 00:01:48.139 The book of Revelation is perhaps not the easiest book in the Bible, but it's not as difficult as we think. 00:01:48.140 --> 00:01:50.959 Remember, the Bible is a people's book. 00:01:51.299 --> 00:01:54.439 The Bible is written for every single one of us. 00:01:54.519 --> 00:02:05.700 It's not for experts to stand up in a podium and to explain it and unpack it to people as if there was some priestly caste who is understanding, 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:09.360 and the ordinary people can't really get it. 00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:13.420 The Bible is a book for every single person. 00:02:13.860 --> 00:02:15.780 And there, of course, there's symbolism in the Bible. 00:02:16.160 --> 00:02:19.180 We'll see symbolism in the verses we're going to read. 00:02:19.280 --> 00:02:23.880 But at the end of the day, it's not as difficult as it appears. 00:02:25.340 --> 00:02:30.540 And so if you were to have an image here about Revelation chapter 5, indeed the whole of Revelation, 00:02:30.539 --> 00:02:35.419 you would ask the question, what is behind the locked door? 00:02:36.739 --> 00:02:38.500 Or what is behind the curtain? 00:02:39.379 --> 00:02:41.719 Because the word Revelation means an unveiling. 00:02:42.139 --> 00:02:45.519 So what we have is you imagine something and it's mysterious. 00:02:46.979 --> 00:02:51.500 And someone says, look, you go into that room, but don't look behind the curtain, 00:02:51.759 --> 00:02:54.340 because there are mysteries behind the curtain. 00:02:54.340 --> 00:03:03.159 And so look at the Revelation as the unveiling, the opening of the curtain to see what is behind it. 00:03:04.500 --> 00:03:09.460 Now remember also that whenever we read the Bible, and again we see this tonight when we look at Esther, 00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:14.860 there is really one story in the Bible, and that's the story of Jesus. 00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:21.280 And the story of how Jesus came to save, and that runs from Genesis right on to Revelation. 00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:24.599 How he came on a great rescue mission. 00:03:25.819 --> 00:03:32.900 And so the hero of the Bible, the hero of the day, the hero of the hour is always the Lord Jesus. 00:03:34.139 --> 00:03:37.159 And of course he is featured very much in this chapter. 00:03:37.620 --> 00:03:39.120 He is seen there in two 00:04:04.100 why don't people love God more? 00:04:05.640 --> 00:04:11.620 And his reply was, they don't love him because they don't know him. 00:04:13.460 --> 00:04:14.900 It's interesting, isn't it? church-going population of the Western Isles is, I think, the highest in the United Kingdom 00:04:27.139 --> 00:04:35.699 at something like 10%, but 90% of folk don't appear to know him or don't 00:04:42.899 They don't know what he is like. 00:04:42.899 --> 00:04:45.679 And sometimes we've not really helped. 00:04:47.199 --> 00:04:50.079 And so what I want to do here is look at this passage. 00:05:06.639 It's the theme of the song of the angels in verse 9. 00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:10.519 And worthy are you to take the scroll and open its seals. 00:05:11.139 --> 00:05:11.620 Worthy. 00:05:12.899 --> 00:05:16.060 And again, we'll unpack that in a wee while, God willing. 00:05:17.379 --> 00:05:22.479 But this morning, as we look at the passage, I just want us to notice, strangely enough, three things. 00:05:23.339 --> 00:05:26.699 The first thing we notice there is the scroll. 00:05:26.699 --> 00:05:29.879 And that kind of dominates the chapter, isn't it? 00:05:30.180 --> 00:05:30.699 The scroll. 00:05:30.839 --> 00:05:32.279 What do we notice about the scroll? 00:05:32.420 --> 00:05:37.519 Well, verse 1 and verse 3, we notice that the scroll is sealed. 00:05:37.519 --> 00:05:43.259 And so you're always wondering, what's inside a sealed scroll? 00:05:44.219 --> 00:05:49.319 Well, we've got to ask ourselves, what exactly is this scroll? 00:05:50.180 --> 00:05:52.180 Verse 1 says it's got writing on it. 00:05:52.240 --> 00:05:54.620 There's writing on it on both sides. 00:05:54.899 --> 00:05:58.079 The idea there is it's packed with information. 00:05:58.240 --> 00:05:59.299 It's packed with writing. 00:06:00.680 --> 00:06:06.959 And there's lots of ideas, lots of theories about what actually is written on the scroll. 00:06:07.519 --> 00:06:11.120 Some folks say it's prophecies are written on the scroll. 00:06:11.819 --> 00:06:14.560 There's another interesting view. 00:06:14.919 --> 00:06:16.719 It's the last will and testimony. 00:06:17.279 --> 00:06:20.199 Some folks say it's the last will and testimony of Jesus. 00:06:20.419 --> 00:06:22.060 That's what's written on the scroll. 00:06:22.560 --> 00:06:25.560 And so the picture is it's like the reading of a will. 00:06:26.579 --> 00:06:29.319 What has Jesus left for the church? 00:06:29.539 --> 00:06:30.680 And it's in the scroll. 00:06:30.799 --> 00:06:33.579 And 00:08:24.000 But nobody knows the combination. 00:08:25.860 --> 00:08:29.319 And you see here, there, the problem with scroll. 00:08:29.560 --> 00:08:31.160 In verse 2, I ask the question, person who opened the scroll didn't just read it, 00:09:17.339 --> 00:09:18.919 but they enacted it. 00:09:19.459 --> 00:09:20.919 They made it happen. 00:09:20.919 --> 00:09:25.959 So, this stuff in the scroll wasn't going to happen. 00:09:26.479 --> 00:09:28.559 Good things, bad things, all these things, 00:09:28.899 --> 00:09:30.500 the future of humanity, 00:09:30.939 --> 00:09:32.659 the
