you train or lift heavy weights, you know, it's possible to just get into bad habits of lifting. 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:41.759 So that eventually what happens, your back or your skeletal structure with looking at justification. 00:05:17.259 --> 00:05:17.539 Justification. 00:05:18.599 --> 00:05:27.579 Now, I think justification by grace through faith is one of the most important doctrines for Christians, 00:05:27.779 --> 00:05:32.219 not just in the world globally, but in Hong Kong and in our time in history. 00:05:33.360 --> 00:05:38.620 You see, it's one of the most countercultural doctrines here in Hong Kong. 00:05:38.620 --> 00:05:44.480 Rapper Shai Lin once said justification by faith is the key to eliminating racism. 00:05:45.579 --> 00:05:46.660 I think he's right. 00:05:47.079 --> 00:05:48.459 And it's not just racism. 00:05:48.819 --> 00:05:50.560 It's all kinds of isms. 00:05:51.019 --> 00:05:56.079 Because we live in a world that is filled with judgment, don't we? 00:05:56.579 --> 00:06:03.480 And if you don't feel judged when you go outside into the world, then you will be judging other people. 00:06:03.480 --> 00:06:11.319 We're always comparing ourselves with others, putting people into boxes of what we think conforms to our standards. 00:06:12.340 --> 00:06:17.980 And, you know, the basis for our judgment, whether it's from childhood all the way to death, is your performance. 00:06:18.600 --> 00:06:20.580 It's how well you have performance. 00:06:20.860 --> 00:06:24.700 I spoke to someone who works with the elderly in poverty here in Hong Kong. 00:06:24.700 --> 00:06:31.879 And he said to me, many of the elderly, they love kids, but they don't want some of the kids to visit them. 00:06:31.879 --> 00:06:40.300 Because kids are so used to hearing critical comments from their parents that when they go around to the poor homes of these elderly people, 00:06:40.480 --> 00:06:43.759 they have no filter and they just blunt out all these critical comments. 00:06:44.060 --> 00:06:46.339 And they make the elderly just feel judged. 00:06:46.879 --> 00:06:49.740 And they already feel bad enough about themselves already. 00:06:50.180 --> 00:06:53.339 They don't just want to be put again in that box again. 00:06:53.620 --> 00:06:57.259 So they prefer to be alone, even though they're desperate for community. 00:06:57.259 --> 00:07:01.659 You know, that's sometimes not just with the elderly. 00:07:02.219 --> 00:07:05.459 That's sometimes even in church we can feel like that. 00:07:06.500 --> 00:07:11.399 Martin Luther, the reformer, was once paraphrased saying this. 00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:19.980 He said, every week I preach justification by faith to my people because every week they forget it. 00:07:20.920 --> 00:07:22.500 I think that is so true. 00:07:22.500 --> 00:07:24.680 You see, one author says it like this. 00:07:24.740 --> 00:07:34.779 He says, for most Christians, we intellectually know that God's acceptance of us is because of what Jesus did on the cross. 00:07:35.360 --> 00:07:44.439 But in our actual day-to-day existence, most of us still rely on our performance to assure us of God's love and acceptance. 00:07:44.439 --> 00:07:52.879 Either our spiritual sincerity, all the stuff that we've done for Jesus, our past experience of conversion, or our recent religious performance. he says, and he carries on, Christians who are not sure that God loves them and accepts them in Jesus, apart from some spiritual performance or achievement, are subconsciously radically insecure people. 00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:24.079 Do you see what he's saying? 00:08:24.079 --> 00:08:30.680 He's saying, you can know the gospel in your head, but still be deeply insecure in your life. feeling like we're never quite meeting up to other people's expectations, our own expectations, or God's expectations of us. 00:08:44.139 --> 00:08:46.960 And that doesn't fill your heart with joy. justification through grace, by grace, through faith. 00:09:10.959 --> 00:09:15.419 And we're going to look at the bad news, the good news, and so what. 00:09:15.419 --> 00:09:24.099 So, follow along, we're going to look at, I'm going to base out of the Romans passage and use a couple of others as we go along. 00:09:24.719 --> 00:09:31.299 You know, I was talking to a couple about their home country, and they said what an incredible culture theirs was. 00:09:31.519 --> 00:09:36.360 It was vibrant, it was just people had a great attitude in so many different ways. 00:09:36.839 --> 00:09:38.259 But they said there's a dark side. 00:09:38.259 --> 00:09:45.960 For generation after generation, people have been ingrained with the mentality that they think it's okay to steal stuff. 00:09:46.939 --> 00:09:51.419 You know, you're smart if you trick people out of other people's things. 00:09:51.899 --> 00:10:00.460 And so even if the police catch you, well, what you do, you go to court, and you can just pay a bribe to the judge. 00:10:00.460 --> 00:10:03.000 Go, remember that money I gave you last week? 00:10:03.200 --> 00:10:04.540 You know, let me off. 00:10:04.820 --> 00:10:08.780 Or, what they do is they point the finger at someone else and blame someone else. 00:10:08.820 --> 00:10:11.460 So, they get acquitted, somebody else gets condemned. 00:10:12.160 --> 00:10:14.680 And so they have this right standing before the law. 00:10:15.080 --> 00:10:19.820 They have right standing before the community because everyone thinks they're smart that they got out of it. 00:10:19.820 --> 00:10:23.920 And that's how justification works for them. 00:10:24.600 --> 00:10:32.440 Because justification is the declaration of being acquitted, of being proved to be in the crushed. 00:10:54.260 --> 00:11:00.500 And that is the picture that as we come and look in Romans, that Paul paints of the human race. 00:11:00.920 --> 00:11:03.840 He says we're part of the Adams family. 00:11:04.700 --> 00:11:06.420 Where Adam is the head of our family. 00:11:06.740 --> 00:11:14.180 And it's a family that from generation after generation on generation we've been characterized by sin and unjust judgment. 00:11:14.179 --> 00:11:19.439 And it's embedded into the culture of every one of us. 00:11:19.799 --> 00:11:22.159 And we feel that, don't we, in our judging culture. 00:11:22.620 --> 00:11:27.699 And Paul says earlier on, before the passage we read, he says no one is righteous, not even one. 00:11:27.700 --> 00:11:36.000 And he says what we try and do is, because we do know that and we feel that, but we try and cover our insecurity. 00:11:36.500 --> 00:11:39.259 We try and find ways to acquit ourselves. 00:11:39.940 --> 00:11:41.820 Ways to prove that we're a good person. 00:11:41.920 --> 00:11:43.180 To prove that we're acceptable. 00:11:43.740 --> 00:11:45.640 To justify ourselves. 00:11:46.080 --> 00:11:50.580 And in order to justify ourselves, we blame and condemn someone else. 00:11:51.440 --> 00:11:54.560 Do you remember the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee? 00:11:54.559 --> 00:12:02.839 It says that Jesus told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous. 00:12:03.419 --> 00:12:06.299 And then treated other people with contempt. 00:12:07.059 --> 00:12:12.979 See, the Pharisee comes into the temple and he parades before God all the good things that he's done. 00:12:13.059 --> 00:12:16.219 He says, I thank you God that I'm not like other men. 00:12:16.639 --> 00:12:18.459 You know, those people down there. 00:12:18.959 --> 00:12:23.899 I've fasted, I've tithed, I've served chasiofan to homeless people, even if they didn't want it. 00:12:23.899 --> 00:12:29.919 He produces all the evidence for why he should be justified before God. 00:12:30.779 --> 00:12:33.419 He should be declared righteous before God. 00:12:33.539 --> 00:12:34.659 Look at all this stuff. 00:12:34.919 --> 00:12:36.959 All these things that I've done for you. 00:12:37.860 --> 00:12:38.500 What's he doing? 00:12:39.220 --> 00:12:41.179 He's actually trying to bribe the judge. 00:12:41.879 --> 00:12:46.039 He's saying, like, overlook other stuff because look at this stuff that I did here. 00:12:46.039 --> 00:12:49.799 And what is he doing? 00:12:50.099 --> 00:12:54.159 He's created his own standards of what he thinks can justify himself. 00:12:54.559 --> 00:12:57.839 And by those same standards, then he ends up condemning other people. 00:12:59.019 --> 00:13:04.120 It's like the yellow supporter goes, I thank you God that I'm not like those blue ribbon supporters. 00:13:04.539 --> 00:13:05.759 I fight for justice. 00:13:05.759 --> 00:13:10.259 And the blue supporter goes, I thank you God that I'm not like those yellow guys. 00:13:10.500 --> 00:13:12.059 I honor the government and stability. 00:13:12.480 --> 00:13:16.919 And we go, God, I thank you God that I'm not like those other water markers. 00:13:17.159 --> 00:13:18.100 I come on time. 00:13:18.220 --> 00:13:18.759 I serve. 00:13:19.019 --> 00:13:21.620 I read the Bible and pray semi-regularly. 00:13:22.059 --> in Romans, it was the Jewish Christians who were going, I thank God I'm not like those Gentiles who eat pork and don't keep the Jewish law like we do. 00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:47.240 And the Gentiles were going, Gentile Christians were going, I thank God that I'm not like those legalistic Jewish rule-based Christians. 00:13:47.340 --> 00:13:49.800 I've got freedom in Christ so I can eat what I like. 00:13:49.800 --> 00:13:58.399 And that own standards of judgment was the source of every ism that we have in our world. 00:13:58.399 --> 00:13:59.980 It's the source of most conflict. righteous and justified by their own standard. 00:14:18.519 --> 00:14:21.419 Isn't it amazing when you're in conflict with someone, you always think you're right. 00:14:21.539 --> 00:14:22.519 You never think you're wrong. 00:14:22.519 --> 00:14:27.740 At least you're 95% right and they're 5%, maybe 5% wrong. 00:14:28.399 --> 00:14:31.639 And Paul cuts through all of that. 00:14:32.340 --> 00:14:34.539 He rips up all the defenses. 00:14:34.919 --> 00:14:41.840 He tears down the list of things that you thought you could stand on to make yourself feel good about yourself. 00:14:42.620 -->
