Sorry that took a second to set all of that up. 00:00:35.200 --> 00:00:41.500 How many of you have heard the parable of the children in the marketplace before? 00:00:41.980 --> 00:00:42.840 Show of hands. 00:00:44.620 --> 00:00:46.340 It's an uncommon parable. 00:00:47.120 --> 00:00:57.700 I did some research as I was preparing for the sermon, and it's a very unusual, a very rare parable that's often overlooked. 00:00:57.700 --> 00:01:03.140 And when you read it, you're like, okay, these children are sitting. 00:01:04.760 --> 00:01:05.920 What does it mean? 00:01:06.939 --> 00:01:15.100 Very similarly, as we find not only with this parable, but with other parables, there's a lot of meaning that is much deeper. 00:01:15.099 --> 00:01:19.259 It's just like that saying that there is more than meets the eye. 00:01:20.059 --> 00:01:25.140 We find that there is much depth, much that we can learn. 00:01:25.739 --> 00:01:34.099 As we are to read the Word of God, we are to look at what it says, learn from it, grow from it, and respond. 00:01:34.099 --> 00:01:50.719 I found that in a lot of sermon databases, some of the most common parables that you find are the Good Samaritan, the four soils, but not a lot of the children in the marketplace. 00:01:50.979 --> 00:01:52.579 And I just found that to be very interesting. 00:01:52.579 --> 00:02:02.039 Out of the thousands of sermons on example of the Good Samaritan, there was less than 300 that I could find in active sermon databases. 00:02:02.519 --> 00:02:04.140 I found that to be very interesting. 00:02:05.259 --> 00:02:09.780 But like any part of the Word of God, it is important for us to read. 00:02:09.879 --> 00:02:10.000 Amen. 00:02:10.800 --> 00:02:12.439 It's important for us to study. 00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:15.240 It's important for us to learn and for us to grow. 00:02:15.360 --> 00:02:18.060 And it's only four verses long. 00:02:18.060 --> 00:02:31.840 For those of you that might have been raised more with a lectionary, I found it interesting that this verse only appears once in a three-year lectionary in year A, in the proper nine. 00:02:32.780 --> 00:02:36.560 Which I found to be also not a common reading in here. 00:02:37.740 --> 00:02:43.980 But what we find is this scene where we have children that are sitting there. 00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:45.759 There are instruments that are being played. 00:02:45.759 --> 00:02:48.340 There's times of joy and times of sorrow. 00:02:48.959 --> 00:02:51.780 But yet there is no response. 00:02:52.759 --> 00:02:57.599 And what I'd like to do, I have actually a video that I'd like for you guys to watch. 00:02:57.899 --> 00:02:59.120 Kind of as a representation. 00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:25.420 Just a short few seconds here. 00:03:26.500 --> 00:03:27.740 Children are just sitting there. 00:03:27.740 --> 00:03:30.020 Not really a care in the world. 00:03:31.040 --> 00:03:35.159 There's these instruments that are playing and no response. 00:03:36.120 --> 00:03:41.100 And even when you look at, well, this was what the text said. 00:03:41.159 --> 00:03:43.680 We played the flute for you and you did not dance. 00:03:43.780 --> 00:03:46.219 We sang a dirge and you did not weep. 00:03:46.219 --> 00:03:55.860 So you have this older woman representing the, you know, a time of sorrow, a time of weeping and no response. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:59.020 And I can't help but think for a moment here when I'm reading this. 00:03:59.020 --> 00:04:04.500 You want to have children participate in activities, right? 00:04:04.500 --> 00:04:07.160 Like birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations. 00:04:08.080 --> 00:04:13.200 In the same way that you want children to participate in times of mourning and times of sadness. 00:04:13.700 --> 00:04:19.660 And what a horrible scenario you can think of when children are not responding at all. 00:04:19.660 --> 00:04:22.040 Now, don't raise your hand. 00:04:22.140 --> 00:04:26.260 I hope none of you have ever done this before or none of your children have done this either. 00:04:26.259 --> 00:04:33.560 But to me, it seems like these children are just, well, shall we say spoiled, unappreciative. 00:04:33.839 --> 00:04:35.719 They're not present in the moment. 00:04:35.719 --> 00:04:40.000 And we can think that there's situations where that happens to children. want to go back to the text real quick. 00:04:52.660 --> 00:05:00.500 You know, you had these verses that Kathy was reading that was leading up to this parable. 00:05:01.019 --> 00:05:03.939 Where it had to do with John the Baptist, right? 00:05:04.040 --> 00:05:08.800 Behold, I send my messenger before your face who will prepare your way before you. 00:05:08.800 --> 00:05:13.819 In verse 28, I tell you, among these born of women, none is greater than John. 00:05:13.879 --> 00:05:15.740 I used to struggle with that verse a great deal. 00:05:16.280 --> 00:05:21.000 But keep going when it says the one who is least in the kingdom is greater than he. 00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:26.019 Which is talking about the importance that we need to be a part of the kingdom. 00:05:26.199 --> 00:05:26.340 Amen? 00:05:27.180 --> 00:05:29.840 That if you are the least or the smallest, right? 00:05:29.879 --> 00:05:31.019 You just made it in. 00:05:31.840 --> 00:05:33.340 Well, you made it in. this, the tax collectors too, they declared God just. 00:05:48.719 --> 00:05:50.839 Having been baptized with the baptism of John. 00:05:51.439 --> 00:05:55.599 But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose for themselves. 00:05:55.839 --> 00:05:57.519 Not having been baptized by him. 00:05:58.399 --> 00:06:03.759 And this is where Christ is saying to what then shall I compare people of this generation? 00:06:03.759 --> 00:06:04.719 And what are they like? 00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:08.400 Well, it's almost like Christ is saying they're like spoiled children. 00:06:08.900 --> 00:06:09.740 As it were. 00:06:10.820 --> 00:06:14.100 They're like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another. 00:06:14.180 --> 00:06:18.000 Maybe just talking amongst themselves and not a care in the world. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:23.320 And that language where it's saying we played the flute for you and you did not dance. 00:06:23.900 --> 00:06:26.620 We sang a dirge and you did not weep. 00:06:26.620 --> 00:06:36.439 And so Jesus is addressing people who are not only rejecting John the Baptist, but they're rejecting Christ. 00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:45.920 And he is using the image of children passively sitting, refusing to participate in any sort of life. 00:06:45.920 --> 00:06:47.340 I don't know about you. 00:06:47.439 --> 00:06:49.980 I don't want to be called a 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:05.759 Their ears were not ready as it were. 00:07:05.859 --> 00:07:10.099 And we find this just like we have found in many patterns within scripture. 00:07:10.519 --> 00:07:12.859 The parable of the sower, for example. 00:07:12.979 --> 00:07:16.620 Where we have the seeds and the soil being ready to receive. 00:07:16.620 --> 00:07:19.699 Just as one example. 00:07:20.699 --> 00:07:24.100 You know what's so interesting is when we think of John the Baptist. 00:07:25.600 --> 00:07:27.220 So Bible question for you. 00:07:27.319 --> 00:07:29.000 Who is the last prophet? 00:07:33.160 --> 00:07:35.280 Some of you may say Malachi, right? 00:07:36.540 --> 00:07:37.019 Maybe. 00:07:37.259 --> 00:07:37.540 No. 00:07:37.660 --> 00:07:37.860 Okay. 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:38.740 That's all right. 00:07:39.459 --> 00:07:42.360 It's very interesting when we think of John the Baptist. 00:07:42.360 --> 00:07:47.379 That he being the last prophet before Christ. 00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:51.720 A lot of us, if you're asked the question, who's the last prophet? 00:07:51.860 --> 00:07:52.840 You would say Malachi. 00:07:53.600 --> 00:07:56.860 But when you think of the Old Testament, it's Malachi. 00:07:57.439 --> 00:08:02.360 When you're looking at the text of John the Baptist who's saying, repent, right? 00:08:02.439 --> 00:08:04.199 Prepare the way of the Lord. 00:08:04.259 --> 00:08:06.120 That's very prophetic language. 00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:08.780 And I just find it very interesting when we go. 00:08:08.780 --> 00:08:10.420 If we can go back to the text here. 00:08:12.360 --> 00:08:17.300 When Christ is saying, John messengers had gone out. 00:08:17.360 --> 00:08:18.080 What did you see? 00:08:19.720 --> 00:08:20.540 A prophet? 00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:22.400 Yes, I tell you, more than a prophet. 00:08:22.520 --> 00:08:23.720 This is of whom it is written. 00:08:24.080 --> 00:08:28.819 I'm sending a messenger before your face who will prepare your way before you. 00:08:30.100 --> 00:08:35.340 But I think sometimes we just forget that John the Baptist is, well, he's a prophet. 00:08:35.340 --> 00:08:37.800 But he's more than a prophet as the text is saying. 00:08:37.799 --> 00:08:47.779 So what's happening here then is these people, this generation, the Pharisees, the lawyers, 00:08:48.219 --> 00:08:50.259 are rejecting both of them. 00:08:50.859 --> 00:08:56.299 When you find in scripture any sort of rejection of two, that's very bad. 00:08:56.299 --> 00:09:01.699 If you remember the parable of the persistent widow and the wicked judge. 00:09:02.359 --> 00:09:08.819 Well, that wicked judge, he neither feared God nor respected man. 00:09:08.939 --> 00:09:10.000 Now, that's a horrible person. 00:09:10.120 --> 00:09:11.399 I don't know about you, right? 00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:13.159 Not fearing God. 00:09:13.240 --> 00:09:14.219 He doesn't believe in the Lord. 00:09:14.240 --> 00:09:16.199 And he doesn't respect people as well. 00:09:16.200 --> 00:09:22.820 And here you're having a rejection of the prophet, John the Baptist, and Christ. 00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:25.400 And so we have these. 00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:29.379 I want to go to the symbolism slide, if that's all right. 00:09:29.759 --> 00:09:35.580 The marketplace here is a representation of just everyday life. 00:09:36.780 --> 00:09:41.879 When you think of back in Jewish times and Jewish culture, the marketplace is where everything 00:09:41.879 --> 00:09:42.500 was happening. 00:09:42.500 --> 00:09:44.720 So you have that. 00:09:44.840 --> 00:09:48.740 You have the children representing this generation or people. 00:09:49.580 --> 00:09:51.779 And sitting is refusing to respond. 00:09:51.980 --> 00:09:57.240 And what's interesting when you saw that little clip was the playing of an instrument, the flute. 00:09:58.539 --> 00:10:01.700 There's the dancing and the clapping, a time of celebration. 00:10:01.700 --> 00:10:06.600 And it's actually a representation of what Christ is doing by providing grace. 00:10:06.600 --> 00:10:13.840 And dirge, then, is representing mourning and repentance, just as with John the Baptist. 00:10:14.620 --> 00:10:15.440 Here's what I mean. 00:10:15.820 --> 00:10:17.560 Go to verse 33, then. 00:10:19.320 --> 00:10:25.920 In your Bibles, John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine. 00:10:27.060 --> 00:10:28.680 And you say, what do they say? 00:10:29.300 --> 00:10:30.440 He has a demon. 00:10:31.399 --> 00:10:32.019 Now, wait a minute. 00:10:32.100 --> 00:10:33.320 What did John the Baptist eat? 00:10:33.340 --> 00:10:33.899 Do you guys remember? 00:10:33.899 --> 00:10:36.199 There you go. 00:10:36.459 --> 00:10:36.740 Right? 00:10:37.059 --> 00:10:37.279 Okay. 00:10:37.299 steady diet of that. 00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:54.500 But he has this more restrictive type of diet. 00:10:54.500 --> 00:11:01.080 And yet, in all of that, these people are saying, he's demonic. 00:11:01.519 --> 00:11:02.500 He's got a demon. 00:11:02.980 --> 00:11:03.860 Get him out of here. 00:11:04.700 --> 00:11:05.840 They're rejecting that. 00:11:06.600 --> 00:11:13.360 So then you see, in verse 34, the Son of Man has come eating and drinking. 00:11:13.639 --> 00:11:15.419 And what do they say, church? 00:11:15.419 --> 00:11:17.879 Look at him. 00:11:18.159 --> 00:11:18.839 A glutton. 00:11:19.439 --> 00:11:20.179 A drunkard. 00:11:20.979 --> 00:11:22.839 A friend of tax collectors. 00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:24.620 And sinners. 00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:30.059 This is one of the only times in Scripture where you see Jesus being quoted as a friend of sinners. 00:11:30.879 --> 00:11:33.679 But we know he is, Jesus is a friend of sinners. 00:11:33.679 --> 00:11:36.519 But I just find it very interesting when it's showing in there. 00:11:37.219 --> 00:11:42.120 So you have the most restrictive of people, respectfully so. 00:11:43.239 --> 00:11:48.939 And then you have Christ who is, well, eating and drinking. 00:11:49.479 --> 00:11:51.459 And yet they still reject him. 00:11:52.519 --> 00:11:55.919 So you have, I guess, both extremes, as it were. 00:11:56.399 --> And we have to think, are there people like that today? 00:12:12.659 --> 00:12:16.479 Certainly, we find in the text that there were people like that back then. 00:12:17.179 --> 00:12:25.099 Who rejected even the most rigid of believers to those that were providing grace. 00:12:25.179 --> 00:12:28.839 So you have actually the symbolism of law or truth. 00:12:29.179 --> 00:12:30.859 And then grace and love. 00:12:30.860 --> 00:12:33.039 Both being rejected. 00:12:33.180 --> 00:12:37.279 I cannot help but think of how there are people like that even today. 00:12:38.360 --> 00:12:39.759 Who reject Christ. 00:12:40.139 --> 00:12:41.480 Who reject the word. 00:12:41.600 --> 00:12:43.379 Who reject the words of the prophets. 00:12:43.600 --> 00:12:45.360 Who reject the Old Testament even. 00:12:45.580 --> 00:12:46.800 Who reject the New Testament. 00:12:46.879 --> 00:12:49.860 How many of you have heard, for example, people that say, 00:12:50.100 --> 00:12:53.300 I like the God of the New Testament. 00:12:54.100 --> 00:12:56.159 And say, I don't like the God of the Old Testament. 00:12:56.159 --> 00:12:58.879 It's too harsh of language. 00:12:59.339 --> 00:13:01.959 And certainly, it's much more challenging, for sure. 00:13:02.699 --> 00:13:07.199 But it's showing that all of Scripture is all together for us. 00:13:07.200 --> 00:13:11.340 There's a lot of parts to who God is. 00:13:11.379 --> 00:13:13.900 Much like there's parts of who we are. 00:13:14.520 --> 00:13:19.920 I know for a lot of us, we try to put our best foot forward when we're at school or at work. 00:13:20.040 --> 00:13:22.160 But there's other sides to us, right? 00:13:22.580 --> 00:13:23.560 Say yes, please. 00:13:23.660 --> 00:13:25.620 I hope there's more sides to you. 00:13:26.020 --> those, well, if you're a lawyer here, you can still love the Lord, okay? 00:14:02.900 --> 00:14:09.720 If you're a Pharisee or one that studies the law, I pray that you don't have a hardened heart. 00:14:10.100 --> 00:14:13.020 Or you're not being a spoiled child, as it were. 00:14:13.700 --> 00:14:17.200 And so we see in here, what is the interpretation? 00:14:17.200 --> 00:14:22.259 What are the lessons then we can learn from this short parable? 00:14:22.360 --> 00:14:23.920 Let's go to that next slide then. 00:14:24.780 --> 00:14:26.879 Is number one, don't be a sitting child. 00:14:26.960 --> 00:14:28.580 Do I mean you can't sit down? 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:30.600 No. 00:14:31.340 --> 00:14:36.160 But don't just be sitting there and letting life pass by. 00:14:37.660 --> 00:14:44.379 God gives you an opportunity to come to him in salvation and responding to the message of the gospel. 00:14:45.100 --> 00:14:46.820 Don't just idly sit by. 00:14:47.820 --> 00:14:53.600 ramification then of being passive is, well, it could be a hardened heart. 00:15:46.759 --> 00:15:48.299 It could be ignorance to God. 00:15:49.580 --> 00:15:51.819 Let that not be the case for you. --> 00:16:20.480 Okay. 00:16:22.439 --> 00:16:28.459 The second thing is that some will reject law and grace. 00:16:29.679 --> 00:16:35.000 John represented discipline, seriousness of the law. 00:16:35.360 --> 00:16:39.720 When he's saying to repent and prepare the way from the Lord. 00:16:40.179 --> 00:16:47.019 Isn't there an importance for us to change our minds and to prepare for the Lord? 00:16:47.019 --> 00:16:50.980 We think of his first coming, but what about his second coming? 00:16:51.740 --> 00:16:55.079 Living a life that is in preparation for the Lord. 00:16:55.799 --> 00:17:02.639 We can think of that as John's approach and then Christ representing grace, joy, and openness. 00:17:03.620 --> 00:17:06.839 Now, for a lot of us, we may gravitate towards one or the other. 00:17:06.940 --> 00:17:07.819 I get that. 00:17:08.460 --> 00:17:10.259 But they're both important here. 00:17:10.259 --> 00:17:17.279 And there are some people that will reject any sort of openness to the Lord. 00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:19.920 And it's very unfortunate. 00:17:20.160 --> 00:17:29.619 And if you know someone that is rejecting or sitting passively like a spoiled child, pray for them. 00:17:30.180 --> 00:17:34.980 And have that door open for conversation. 00:17:34.980 --> 00:17:41.519 You never know when someone will contact you, call you, email you, text you. for their ears to be ready. 00:18:20.039 --> 00:18:26.619 And the third thing is that wisdom is shown by fruitfulness, right? 00:18:26.700 --> 00:18:29.799 It's scripture says, you shall know them by their fruit. 00:18:29.940 --> 00:18:34.279 And wisdom is shown by this sense of transformation. 00:18:35.940 --> 00:18:42.259 Don't be that idle child, but be like that tree that is bearing fruit.
