00:06:12.879 --> 00:06:15.259 Smyrna was a church that was being crushed. 00:06:16.500 --> 00:06:21.519 You know that there are more people who are going to be killed for their faith these 100 years 00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:25.699 than all the other 100 years put together in the life of the church. 00:06:27.379 --> 00:06:31.620 And we as God's people, we need to be praying for them. 00:06:33.039 --> 00:06:36.139 He encourages Smyrna to hang in there, even amongst the bitterness, 00:06:36.659 --> 00:06:39.039 because at the end you're going to receive the crown of life. 00:06:40.099 --> 00:06:41.099 You'll meet Christ. 00:06:41.100 --> 00:06:47.939 Today we come to the church of Pergamum, however you want to say it. 00:06:49.100 --> 00:06:52.200 It's the church, most people would say, of worldliness. 00:06:53.120 --> 00:06:54.420 It's the church of compromise. 00:06:54.640 --> 00:06:55.740 It's the church of struggle. 00:06:56.379 --> 00:06:59.120 The word actually means to be thoroughly married. 00:06:59.540 --> 00:07:05.300 And the idea is that the church was so thoroughly integrated to the community and to the culture 00:07:05.300 --> 00:07:09.180 that sometimes people didn't know what was Christian and what was Pergamum. 00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:12.600 Pergamum was this amazing city. 00:07:12.699 --> 00:07:13.639 It was an ancient city. 00:07:13.720 --> 00:07:15.220 It was built on this massive mountain. 00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:16.780 It was a strategic city. 00:07:16.860 --> 00:07:18.300 It had great military value. 00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:22.860 Alexander the Great took over the city, and he stored all his riches in there. 00:07:22.939 --> 00:07:26.360 The historians told us that he put billions and billions of dollars of gold 00:07:26.360 --> 00:07:28.699 from all the countries and nations that he conquered. 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:32.900 Pergamum was a royal city, and it was loyal to Rome. 00:07:32.899 --> 00:07:36.719 It was one of the few cities that Rome had given the right to capital punishment. 00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:39.500 Most of the time, if you wanted to practice capital punishment, 00:07:39.779 --> 00:07:42.939 you had to send the person to Rome to be killed, especially if they were a Roman citizen. 00:07:43.299 --> 00:07:44.699 But in Pergamum, that wasn't true. 00:07:45.019 --> 00:07:48.939 They were so loyal that the Romans gave them the right to kill whoever they wanted. 00:07:49.560 --> 00:07:51.659 The symbol of this power was a sword. 00:07:52.599 --> 00:07:53.519 It was a two-edged sword. 00:07:53.579 --> 00:07:54.519 It was used in Calvary. 00:07:54.579 --> 00:07:55.279 It was very sharp. 00:07:56.779 --> 00:08:01.620 Pergamum became this amazing center for intellectual discussion. 00:08:02.899 --> 00:08:04.839 Eumenes, he's an inventor. 00:08:05.060 --> 00:08:08.239 He probably invented parchment, or he perfected it. 00:08:08.500 --> 00:08:12.159 And so he got this idea of how to write on animal skins. 00:08:12.539 --> 00:08:14.159 And so Pergamum had this library. 00:08:14.259 --> 00:08:15.899 It was the largest library in the world. 00:08:16.199 --> 00:08:18.239 There were over 200,000 volumes in it. 00:08:18.579 --> 00:08:22.379 It was so significant throughout history that when Anthony wanted to marry Cleopatra, 00:08:22.620 --> 00:08:25.120 he took the library and he gave it to her as a wedding gift, 00:08:25.339 --> 00:08:26.659 and she took it down to Alexandria. 00:08:27.719 --> 00:08:29.599 It was a center of politics and religion. 00:08:29.600 --> 00:08:32.920 On its hill behind the city as you walked into it, 00:08:32.920 --> 00:08:36.620 on its hill there were 50 different temples to different gods. 00:08:36.940 --> 00:08:40.240 There were 50 different gods you could worship in Pergamum. 00:08:40.519 --> 00:08:44.740 There was Zeus and Dionysus and Venus and Esclepulos. 00:08:45.420 --> 00:08:47.820 And almost every week, we're told in the calendar, 00:08:47.940 --> 00:08:51.000 almost every week there were two or three days of holidays. 00:08:51.920 --> 00:08:54.160 I mean, if you think Hong Kong has a lot of holidays, 00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:57.980 Pergamum had holidays after holidays after holidays. 00:08:59.299 --> 00:09:04.639 In the ancient world, you could choose whatever god you wanted to serve. 00:09:04.819 --> 00:09:05.399 Did you know that? 00:10:39.679 But the second one is Galen, and Galen grew up there, 00:10:39.980 --> 00:10:44.199 and he ended up being the physician for all of these Caesars afterwards. 00:10:44.679 --> 00:10:48.059 Galen is the father of anatomy and physiology and pharmacology 00:10:48.059 --> 00:10:49.519 and pathology and neurology. 00:10:49.839 --> 00:10:52.459 He created all these things and thought through worshiping it as a God. 00:12:46.659 --> 00:12:52.559 And as an example, what we do as people, God gives us these great things that we enjoy, 00:12:52.559 --> 00:12:54.600 and we use, and they're for one who has the sharp two-edged sword say this. 00:14:58.299 --> 00:14:59.679 Now make a note to yourself. 00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:03.459 Whenever God starts a letter off this way, 00:15:04.219 -->
