00:09:57.440 --> 00:09:58.940 Destroy them totally? 00:09:59.780 --> 00:10:01.680 Show them no mercy? 00:10:02.840 --> 00:10:04.960 Does this make anyone else uncomfortable? 00:10:06.580 --> 00:10:11.900 Maybe for some of us, this even seems to, what, disprove the holiness of God. 00:10:12.220 --> 00:10:16.440 Like, how could a holy and just God have his people do such a thing? 00:15:14.399 --> 00:15:17.879 Is the problem really that God was violating his holiness 00:15:17.879 --> 00:15:21.379 or is the problem that we have had too low a view 00:15:21.379 --> 00:15:24.679 of his holiness and too trivial a view of sin 00:15:24.679 --> 00:15:25.980 and its pervasiveness? 00:15:26.919 --> 00:15:28.199 I want us to listen to the psalmist. 00:15:28.279 --> 00:15:30.379 The psalmist says, there is no one who does good. 00:15:30.819 --> 00:15:31.740 All have turned away. 00:15:31.839 --> 00:15:32.799 All have become corrupt. 00:15:32.799 --> 00:15:35.219 There is no one who does good, not even one. 00:15:35.839 --> 00:15:36.759 The prophet Isaiah said, 00:15:36.879 --> 00:15:38.500 we all like sheep have gone astray. 00:15:38.799 --> 00:15:40.959 Each of us has turned our own way. 00:15:41.819 --> 00:15:44.339 In Ecclesiastes, the Kohelet, the teacher, he says, 00:15:44.500 --> 00:15:46.679 indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous. 00:15:47.259 --> 00:15:49.879 No one who does what is right and never sins. 00:15:50.599 --> 00:15:52.799 And the apostle Paul encapsulates all of this 00:15:52.799 --> 00:15:54.159 in Romans chapter three when he says, 00:15:54.459 --> 00:15:58.459 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 00:15:59.319 --> 00:16:01.399 And these nations in Deuteronomy chapter seven, 00:16:01.399 --> 00:16:02.819 they are no exception. 00:16:03.740 --> 00:16:05.699 In fact, archeological findings reveal 00:16:05.699 --> 00:16:06.779 that these nations practice 00:16:06.779 --> 00:16:10.600 some pretty abominable things like incest 00:16:10.600 --> 00:16:12.579 and like child sacrifice. 00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:15.100 And as verses four and five indicate, 00:16:15.220 --> 00:16:18.360 they idolatrously worshiped other gods. 00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:20.740 And listen, this is not simply the destruction 00:16:20.740 --> 00:16:23.699 of other people for picking the wrong religion here. 00:16:23.779 --> 00:16:26.120 It's destruction for turning one's back on 00:16:26.120 --> 00:16:28.700 and rejecting the one true God 00:16:28.700 --> 00:16:31.080 who gave them life in the first place. 00:16:31.860 --> 00:16:34.039 I want you to also remember all these nations 00:16:34.039 --> 00:16:37.919 who God commanded Israel to totally destroy, 00:16:38.060 --> 00:16:39.580 all these nations had heard. 00:16:39.960 --> 00:16:41.879 They had heard of what Yahweh had done 00:16:41.879 --> 00:16:44.860 for Israel in Egypt and even in the wilderness. 00:16:45.039 --> 00:16:47.460 That's why people like Rahab in Jericho, 00:16:47.580 --> 00:16:49.720 though her whole city trusted in their own strength, 00:16:49.779 --> 00:16:52.299 though her whole city, Jericho, refused to repent, 00:16:52.299 --> 00:16:55.219 she and her family, they sided with 00:16:55.219 --> 00:16:58.979 and they trusted only in the one true God of Israel. 00:16:59.399 --> 00:17:00.219 And they were preserved. 00:17:00.959 --> 00:17:03.299 See, God was not commanding the total destruction 00:17:03.299 --> 00:17:05.839 of guiltless and innocent nations 00:17:05.839 --> 00:17:08.359 or even of guilty people willing to repent. 00:17:09.220 --> 00:17:12.779 He was commanding the total destruction of his enemies, 00:17:13.220 --> 00:17:14.619 his enemies who were dead set 00:17:14.619 --> 00:17:18.019 on their own self-destructive and idolatrous ways. 00:17:18.019 --> 00:17:20.639 But now some of us might also wonder, 00:17:20.779 --> 00:17:23.960 oh, but still, okay, I get that God is being just here. 00:17:24.019 --> 00:17:26.039 I get that these nations were sinful 00:17:26.039 --> 00:17:27.680 and deserving of destruction, 00:17:27.839 --> 00:17:30.119 but why couldn't God show them mercy? 00:17:30.839 --> 00:17:33.599 Why couldn't God show these nations mercy? 00:17:33.680 --> 00:17:36.039 I mean, clearly God has withheld his wrath before. 00:17:36.440 --> 00:17:38.559 He's been withholding it quite a bit 00:17:38.559 --> 00:17:40.879 ever since day one of the fall, right? --> 00:23:53.319 he's not interested in ethnic cleansing. 00:23:53.319 --> 00:23:57.579 He's interested in cleansing his beloved holy people 00:23:57.579 --> 00:24:00.419 of the idols that would harm them. 00:24:01.319 --> 00:24:01.759 Verse five, 00:24:01.839 --> 00:24:03.139 this is what you are to do to them. 00:24:03.679 --> 00:24:04.659 Break down their altars, 00:24:04.960 --> 00:24:06.159 smash their sacred stones, 00:24:06.460 --> 00:24:07.599 cut down their asherah poles, 00:24:07.740 --> 00:24:09.339 and burn their idols in the fire. 00:24:09.379 --> 00:24:12.059 The main point here is not the holy God's anger 00:24:12.059 --> 00:24:13.879 against his idolatrous enemies. 00:24:14.099 --> 00:24:15.859 It's actually the holy God's affection 00:24:15.859 --> 00:24:18.179 for his treasured people, 00:24:18.639 --> 00:24:19.579 his chosen people. 00:24:19.579 --> 00:24:20.980 And we cannot miss this, 00:24:21.019 --> 00:24:22.980 that the holy God is willing to destroy 00:24:22.980 --> 00:24:25.159 and go to battle on behalf of his people. 00:24:26.339 --> 00:24:27.359 We're in a war. 00:24:28.419 --> 00:24:29.399 Now in the new covenant, 00:24:29.539 --> 00:25:33.900 Verse one says that the seven nations were larger, 00:25:34.240 --> 00:25:35.519 far larger, far stronger. 00:25:36.480 --> 00:25:39.759 Well then was it their obedience to God's commands ended up exterminating 00:25:47.480 --> 00:25:49.639 all God's enemies and made no covenants with them 00:25:49.639 --> 00:25:50.819 and did not intermarry with them 00:25:50.819 --> 00:25:52.940 and tore down all their idolatrous shrines? 00:25:53.539 --> 00:25:56.000 Well no, verse six doesn't say, 00:25:56.240 --> 00:25:58.779 do all these things so that you will be a holy people. 00:25:59.639 scriptures 00:26:24.619 --> 00:26:28.919 that they were actually more wicked than these nations. 00:26:29.740 --> 00:26:32.500 The people of Israel too engaged in child sacrifice 00:26:32.500 --> 00:26:35.200 and sexual immorality and idol worship 00:26:35.200 --> 00:26:37.119 and greed and arrogance and injustice. 00:26:37.799 --> 00:26:39.960 They disobeyed God time and time again 00:26:39.960 --> 00:26:42.000 before they had a king, when they had a king, 00:26:42.059 --> 00:26:44.920 and even when their one true king and Messiah came. 00:26:45.920 --> 00:26:46.859 So what was it? 00:26:47.119 --> 00:26:50.920 What made Israel holy and set apart to the Lord? 00:26:51.259 --> 00:26:54.299 What made them chosen out of all the peoples on the earth 00:26:54.299 --> 00:26:56.140 as God's treasured possession? 00:26:57.059 --> 00:26:59.079 And this is where we get to the final point. 00:26:59.079 --> 00:27:03.279 The holy God makes a holy people by his holy means. 00:27:04.099 --> 00:27:06.779 By his holy, distinct, set apart means. 00:27:07.079 --> 00:27:10.019 See, Israel's being set apart as holy to the Lord 00:27:10.019 --> 00:27:10.539 and chosen. 00:27:10.839 --> 00:27:13.939 It had nothing to do with Israel herself, 00:27:14.579 --> 00:27:18.439 but everything to do with the gracious will of God. 00:27:19.240 --> 00:27:21.899 They were his chosen people, his
