WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.820 As I said, the exaltation of Jesus, I really believe, is a feature of the gospel that is absolutely necessary, but often forgotten about. 00:00:12.099 --> 00:00:21.539 And I tried to think through this week, why is it that we don't speak so much about Jesus' ascension, so much about his place on the throne as we do some other things? 00:00:21.539 --> 00:00:42.480 And I think part of it is that, even rightfully so, we're so fixated on what Christ did and when he was and who he was that we don't make it so far as to consider who he is and what he is doing. 00:00:43.479 --> 00:00:56.099 We think back on the things of the cross and the resurrection and the things listed in his life and the mighty signs and works and wonders and the things that we have studied these last couple of weeks in Acts chapter 2. 00:00:56.099 --> 00:01:04.340 But we never move on from there to consider the fact that he is actually still living and he has a place. 00:01:04.439 --> 00:01:10.479 So where is he? He's not on earth any longer. Where is the Lord Jesus? Well, he's on the throne. 00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:15.859 And what is it exactly that the Lord Jesus is doing on the throne? 00:01:15.920 --> 00:01:26.159 And I really think that as we begin to dig into these things, we will find that not only is it necessary for us to understand them, but it's actually wonderful for us to know them. 00:01:27.140 --> 00:01:33.020 And I don't want you to misunderstand me. I'm not saying that we should focus less on the crucifixion and resurrection. 00:01:33.020 --> 00:01:38.700 That's not what I mean at all. My point is that we shouldn't consider the crucifixion and resurrection 00:01:38.700 --> 00:01:42.879 apart from the exaltation of Jesus. 00:01:43.780 --> 00:01:52.359 And the fact that he is the exalted Lord, that he is presently and eternally reigning over all of creation. 00:01:52.820 --> 00:01:58.260 And I think there's some dangers that we face in our Christian life and our Christian carried out in a particular way. 00:02:41.619 --> 00:02:47.919 And when we stop thinking about our worship actually being a sacrifice of praise that is offered to Him, 00:02:48.079 --> 00:02:52.979 we begin to view our worship as something that is satisfying to us instead. 00:02:53.879 --> 00:02:59.359 That's why so many churches trade sheep so oftentimes in a city like ours 00:02:59.359 --> 00:03:01.859 where there's so many different churches that you can attend. 00:03:01.860 --> 00:03:08.420 When the worship or the program or the structures of one particular church 00:03:08.420 --> 00:03:11.620 I find to be less satisfying to me personally, 00:03:11.800 --> 00:03:15.720 then I go find a church that is more satisfying to me personally. 00:03:16.380 --> 00:03:22.560 And I really think part of this is because we have failed to notice and recognize regularly 00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:25.780 that we have a Lord, that He is the exalted Lord, 00:03:25.900 --> 00:03:29.880 that our worship comes to Him, that our worship is not actually about us. 00:03:29.879 --> 00:03:35.900 And I think it can reveal some weaknesses there in our spiritual growth and maturity. 00:03:36.780 --> first time that a Christian or a professing Christian 00:03:54.319 --> 00:03:59.539 excused his sin to me on the basis of God's forgiveness. 00:03:59.879 --> 00:04:07.479 And it was on the school bus actually one day, riding to school or maybe back home from school 00:04:07.479 --> 00:04:08.519 in high school. 00:04:09.240 --> 00:04:12.639 And somehow me and some of my friends were talking about sin. 00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:14.400 I don't even remember what sin it was. 00:04:14.699 --> 00:04:19.439 But one of my buddies, his name was Paul, he said he was talking about a particular thing 00:04:19.439 --> 00:04:21.560 that he was planning on doing that night when he got home. 00:04:22.540 --> 00:04:26.780 And the rest of us were like, well, why would you plan on doing that when you know it's not right? 00:04:26.839 --> 00:04:30.000 He was like, well, it's no big deal because Jesus is just going to forgive my sin. 00:04:30.120 --> 00:04:34.579 I can do the thing and then when I'm finished, I'll ask God to forgive my sin and He'll forgive my sin. 00:04:35.980 --> 00:04:38.540 And Paul only thought of Jesus as a forgiver. 00:04:39.399 --> 00:04:43.259 He didn't actually think of Jesus as a judge, as a Lord. 00:04:43.259 --> 00:04:47.399 Do you see how that can hinder our spiritual growth? 00:04:48.360 --> 00:04:56.480 We might tend to maybe not necessarily happily live in sin, but conveniently live in sin 00:04:56.480 --> 00:04:59.420 because we know the forgiveness is there. 00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:02.959 And we're not so much concerned about pleasing the Lord that we study this morning, 00:06:15.339 --> 00:06:20.420 the apostles always rejoiced in the glories of the cross and the resurrection 00:06:20.420 --> 00:06:27.319 in conjunction with the assurance of Christ's exalted place in heaven. 00:06:28.819 --> 00:06:34.720 For them, the cross and the resurrection and the ascension and the exaltation and the return, 00:06:34.920 --> 00:06:40.439 all of those truths, all of those dynamics of the gospel were intertwined and closely related. 00:06:40.680 --> 00:06:45.840 They didn't separate them out so that they could focus on the cross and the empty tomb in one place. 00:06:45.960 --> 00:06:50.319 And just when they get to it, they could focus on the lordship and exaltation of Christ. 00:06:50.420 --> 00:06:53.800 If you read the New Testament and read what the apostles were preaching, 00:06:54.280 --> 00:06:56.319 Peter's sermon here being clear evidence of it, 00:06:56.580 --> 00:07:03.620 they always linked in the lordship, the exaltation of Jesus with the glories of the cross and the resurrection. 00:07:04.759 --> 00:07:09.080 And throughout history, Christians have done the same thing, not only in their preaching, 00:07:09.079 --> 00:07:14.159 but they have continued to persevere through great hardship and persecution 00:07:14.159 --> 00:07:22.860 because of their hope and recognition of the sovereign rule of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:07:23.699 --> 00:07:29.379 I thought about this week, Charles Spurgeon in the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. 00:07:30.019 --> 00:07:33.959 Before it was the Metropolitan Tabernacle, it was the New Park Street Chapel. 00:07:33.959 --> 00:07:39.120 And in 1856, Spurgeon was only 25 years old. 00:07:40.120 --> 00:07:42.500 His preaching was fantastic. 00:07:42.620 --> 00:07:45.019 It drew massive crowds, even at such a young age. 00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:49.319 And they were outgrowing the facility in which they were meeting on New Park Street. 00:07:50.219 --> 00:07:55.859 And so they began to have services at the Surrey Music Hall in London, 00:07:55.860 --> 00:08:01.840 a place that seats about 10,000, or in that day sat about 10,000 people. 00:08:02.139 --> 00:08:05.259 On one particular night in October of 1856, 00:08:05.879 --> 00:08:13.920 14,000 people are estimated to have gathered into the music hall that night in London to hear Charles Spurgeon preach. 00:08:14.460 --> 00:08:17.500 And they were using this facility while they were building another facility 00:08:17.500 --> 00:08:20.480 that would be more accommodating to the size of their church. 00:08:20.480 --> 00:08:26.740 On that night, just before he actually got up to the platform to preach his sermon for the evening, 00:08:27.319 --> 00:08:32.580 there were some miscreants in the crowd that decided they were going to cause some trouble for the group. 00:08:33.399 --> 00:08:36.539 And there were different places around the building. 00:08:36.659 --> 00:08:41.500 They began to yell, fire, fire, the balconies are falling, the balconies are falling. 00:08:41.820 --> 00:08:43.840 And immediately, chaos ensues. 00:08:43.840 --> 00:08:48.960 And all of these people, scared for their lives, immediately began to run for the doors, 00:08:49.080 --> 00:08:52.440 trying to get out of the way because they thought the place was on fire, 00:08:52.700 --> 00:08:55.860 that there were so many people the building was going to collapse and they were all going to die. 00:08:56.680 --> 00:08:59.780 Well, none of those things were true, but it's what they thought were of course, Spurgeon, so impacted by this, 00:09:17.560 --> 00:09:21.639 it said that on the night when they finally told him what had happened with the seven people 00:09:21.639 --> 00:09:25.360 dying as a result of trying to hear his preaching, 00:09:25.899 --> 00:09:28.139 that he actually fainted upon hearing the news. 00:09:28.340 --> 00:09:30.860 It was a burden that he carried with them his entire life. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:37.139 The newspapers, as you might expect, were very friendly to Spurgeon after that. 00:09:37.139 --> 00:09:38.680 They were not friendly at all, actually. 00:09:38.740 --> 00:09:41.800 They were very critical of him and the church and all these other things. 00:09:41.799 --> 00:09:44.479 And it just became a major burden for the church. 00:09:45.259 --> 00:09:50.519 Two weeks later, Spurgeon preaches for the first time after the tragedy happens. 00:09:50.899 --> 00:09:53.479 He's back at the New Park Street Chapel. 00:09:53.939 --> 00:09:57.779 And I want to read to you the way that he opened his sermon, or at least a portion of it. 00:09:57.779 --> 00:09:59.419 He said, 00:09:59.419 --> 00:10:16.719 The text I have selected is one that has comforted me and in a great measure enabled me to come here today. 00:10:16.720 --> 00:10:23.680 The single reflection upon it had such a power to comfort on my depressed spirit. 00:10:24.399 --> in their midst. 00:11:05.679 --> 00:11:10.359 The one thing that he decided to focus on for that day in pastoring and shepherding his people 00:11:10.359 --> 00:11:12.739 was the sovereign rule of our Lord. 00:11:13.939 --> 00:11:16.819 The exaltation of Jesus Christ. 00:11:17.620 --> 00:11:19.039 And so it's important for us. 00:11:19.239 --> 00:11:20.259 We need not neglect it. 00:11:20.859 --> 00:11:21.919 Peter didn't neglect it. 00:11:22.719 --> 00:11:27.599 I think his aim was threefold here as he deals with it in this particular sermon. 00:11:27.839 --> 00:11:31.139 I think he's continuing to identify Jesus as Messiah. 00:11:31.139 --> 00:11:39.139 He's affirming that Jesus was actually the agent and giver of the spirit that they had witnessed that day. 00:11:39.500 --> 00:11:46.379 And then he's also aiming to proclaim that Jesus is the righteous judge of all. 00:11:46.779 --> 00:11:49.580 And we're going to explore all of those things under three headings today. 00:12:03.360 So look with me first at verse 33 as we see Jesus as the exalted king. 00:12:04.840 --> 00:12:11.819 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God and having received from the Father Jesus, generally we're using the term in a broad sense. 00:12:24.460 --> 00:12:30.360 We really mean to include various facets of the work of Christ, 00:12:30.460 --> 00:12:34.519 including his resurrection and his intercessory work in heaven, 00:12:34.879 --> 00:12:39.560 his second coming, his return, all of those things we would include in a broad sense. 00:12:40.060 --> 00:12:45.240 But there's a specific event of which the apostles were witnesses 00:12:45.240 --> 00:12:51.180 that proves Jesus of Nazareth to be the exalted Christ. 00:12:51.860 --> 00:12:53.400 And this was his verse 6. 00:13:03.220 --> 00:13:07.939 This is approximately or right at 40 days following Jesus' resurrection. 00:13:09.039 --> 00:13:13.059 Jesus is about to go back to heaven as he told his ascending out of sight into the heavens, 00:14:27.500 --> 00:14:32.519 clearly symbolizing his ascension back to the throne of heaven. 00:14:32.820 --> 00:14:36.940 Now Peter was an eyewitness to everything he mentions in this sermon. 00:14:37.940 --> 00:14:41.539 He saw the mighty works and wonders and signs. 00:14:41.539 --> 00:14:45.899 He was there when Jesus was condemned and executed. 00:14:46.559 --> 00:14:49.240 He saw himself the empty tomb. 00:14:49.519 --> 00:14:53.759 He interacted on multiple occasions with the risen Christ. 00:14:53.759 --> 00:14:57.860 And when Peter speaks of Christ's exaltation in this verse, 00:14:58.039 --> 00:15:04.379 he isn't speaking in theoretical terms of what he think has happened with Jesus, 00:15:04.379 --> 00:15:09.879 but it's based on the ascension of the Lord that he personally witnessed. 00:15:10.679 --> 00:15:13.200 He was there on the Mount of Olives that day. 00:15:13.399 --> 00:15:18.960 He saw Jesus leave this earth and return to heaven. 00:15:18.960 --> 00:15:22.620 He heard the angels stand by and say, 00:15:23.060 --> 00:15:24.440 why are you gazing here? 00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:26.360 Go do what he said to do. 00:16:45.860 And the life was the light of men. 00:16:46.519 --> 00:16:51.740 This exalted position is not one Jesus had not yet occupied. 00:16:52.379 --> 00:16:54.480 It's one he was returning to. preaching reminds us that the king who was on the throne condescended from the throne in order that he might make an atonement for our sin. 00:17:29.220 --> 00:17:35.900 It's not that he gained an exalted place after his crucifixion. 00:17:35.900 --> 00:17:40.660 It's that he returned to his exalted place. 00:17:40.660 --> 00:17:44.019 Which is why Paul wrote in Philippians chapter 2. himself not of his deity. 00:17:55.180 --> 00:17:59.839 But of all of the glories that comes with being the king on the throne. 00:18:00.059 --> 00:18:05.240 He did not consider those things worth
