I would say before I get started, it's a blessing to be back in this pulpit. I've 00:00:29.980 --> 00:00:39.100 And as Jeremy mentioned, my wife and I attended this church for many years. In fact, my mom still 00:00:39.100 --> 00:00:44.380 lives right up the hill. My wife's parents live right over there behind Randolph, so we call this 00:00:44.380 --> 00:00:53.560 area of town home. And Jeremy said that Valley Pres is a sister church. That's not quite accurate. 00:00:53.560 --> 00:01:01.719 You're really our mother church. You helped plant us over seven years ago. It holds a special 00:01:55.439 --> 00:02:03.319 place in our hearts. And I'm thankful to Will for inviting me to come and preach today. The passage 00:02:03.319 --> 00:02:08.879 will be on your screen. But I also want you to have your Bibles out or your phones out. It's the very end of a story that you know. I'm going to start in 1 Samuel 17, 00:02:22.060 --> 00:02:24.599 verse 48. It says, 00:02:24.680 --> 00:02:31.120 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle 00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:37.199 line to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it 00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:45.259 and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead and he fell on his face to 00:02:45.259 --> 00:02:52.739 the ground. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone and struck the Philistine 00:02:52.739 --> 00:03:00.060 and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. Then David ran and stood over the Philistine 00:03:00.060 --> 00:03:06.399 and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. 00:03:07.199 --> 00:03:14.859 When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. Let's pray together. 00:03:15.959 --> 00:03:23.620 Heavenly Father, I pray that you would put all distractions aside. Speak to us through your 00:03:23.620 --> 00:03:36.139 word today. Touch our souls. Change our hearts. Glorify your name. And point us to your Son, 00:03:36.139 --> 00:03:42.399 Jesus Christ, who is our Lord, our Savior, and our Redeemer. Amen. 00:03:43.899 --> 00:03:54.639 So, David defeated Goliath. I can only imagine how many times you've heard this story. But what does it 00:03:54.639 --> 00:04:04.319 mean? Usually, the message you hear is, you can be like David. 00:04:04.319 --> 00:04:12.780 David, you can slay the giant in your life. And that is a message of motivation for every giant 00:04:12.780 --> 00:04:19.540 that you face. And it's the message of motivation for any underdog everywhere. 00:04:21.459 --> 00:04:31.159 Today, I'm going to tell you the exact opposite. The true message of David and Goliath isn't that you 00:04:31.160 --> 00:04:42.960 can be David. The true biblical, glorious, hopeful message is that you can't be David. 00:04:42.959 --> 00:04:58.959 And that is good news. Flip back a few pages to 1 Samuel 8. Israel's story is one of brokenness. 00:05:00.959 --> 00:05:10.579 Especially after the judges, which is where this story fits. Israel was at a very low point. 00:05:10.579 --> 00:05:19.639 Samuel was their leader. Samuel was their leader. But the people demanded a king. And in 1 Samuel 8, 00:05:19.639 --> 00:05:34.759 verse 20, the people say, a king may judge us. And a king may go out before us and fight our battles. 00:05:34.759 --> 00:05:46.060 We want a king. Well, eventually, Saul was chosen as their first king. One chapter over at the very 00:05:46.060 --> 00:05:53.360 beginning in 1 Samuel 9, verse 2, it describes Saul. It says, 00:05:53.360 --> 00:06:16.600 Saul was a handsome young man. In other words, Saul was the biggest, the best, and the baddest man of the land. 00:06:16.600 --> 00:06:27.200 But over the next few chapters, he struggles to follow God. Eventually, although Saul stayed physically 00:06:27.200 --> 00:06:36.100 as the king, God removed him from his covenantal plan. And Samuel seeks out a new king, eventually 00:06:36.100 --> 00:06:45.920 anointing David in chapter 16. But Saul remained on the throne, unaware of who David really was. 00:06:46.600 --> 00:06:51.360 So we get to the next chapter, chapter 17, from where I read our passage earlier. 00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:59.460 The Philistines have gathered on one hill, and Israel is on the other hill. Two enemies ready to do 00:06:59.460 --> 00:07:09.800 battle. But instead of an all-out war, the Philistines offer a one-on-one duel to the death. 00:07:09.800 --> 00:07:23.879 Your best man against our best man, winner take all. The Philistines offered Goliath, 00:07:24.540 --> 00:07:35.319 a giant of a man whose body armor alone weighed 120 pounds. He stood six cubits and a span, 00:07:35.319 --> 00:07:45.040 somewhere between six foot nine and nine feet tall. And the Philistine giant challenged Israel 40 00:07:45.040 --> 00:07:55.719 straight days with no response. When you read through this chapter, through these verses, 00:07:55.720 --> 00:08:08.020 the mere presence of Goliath dominates the storyline. There is one huge man in the way. 00:08:10.420 --> 00:08:18.800 So, who should fight Goliath? Well, I just read a description of Saul, and it says he was a head 00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:26.540 taller than anyone in Israel. He was the biggest and the best and the baddest man of the land. And he was 00:08:26.540 --> 00:08:38.159 their king, someone who they expected to go out and fight their battles. This is what a king in Israel 00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:51.100 is supposed to do. Imagine the scene unfolding. One man calls out your whole nation, and no one responds 00:08:51.100 --> 00:09:00.759 for 40 days. In chapter 17, verse 8, this is what Goliath would say, 00:09:00.759 --> 00:09:10.000 Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me. Verse 10, I defy the ranks of Israel this day. 00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:19.340 Verse 11, when Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly 00:09:19.340 --> 00:09:28.340 afraid. Saul, hello? He's calling you out. 00:09:28.340 --> 00:09:39.879 Don't lose this point. It's the key point to the whole story. Saul was supposed to fight Goliath. 00:09:41.019 --> 00:09:55.700 Saul was supposed to fight Goliath. But Saul abdicates. He offers riches, freedom, power, and prizes galore. 00:09:55.700 --> 00:10:07.360 Even his own daughter. For anyone to take his place. Saul doesn't pray to God. God is not even mentioned. 00:10:09.259 --> 00:10:11.500 All the way up until David arrives. 00:10:16.220 --> 00:10:23.300 So then David shows up. He's sent by his father to take supplies to his brothers and check out 00:10:23.299 --> 00:10:32.059 what's going on. David hears Goliath's taunts. David hears about the rewards. 00:10:33.659 --> 00:10:40.579 So David offers to stand in Saul's place. He offers to be his substitute. 00:10:40.580 --> 00:10:48.160 To fight his battle that Saul should fight. To save his people. 00:10:50.160 --> 00:10:59.500 And the king, a man a head taller than anyone else, agrees to let this younger, youthful teenager 00:10:59.500 --> 00:11:01.440 step into his spot. 00:11:01.440 --> 00:11:11.600 Even without the crown, at that moment, David truly ascends to Israel's throne. 00:11:13.760 --> 00:11:18.080 And as you know the story, David slays the giant. 00:11:19.880 --> 00:11:24.820 And everyone who ever hears this story identifies with someone. 00:11:24.820 --> 00:11:28.879 We always identify with David. 00:11:32.800 --> 00:11:35.940 Before defeating Goliath, David actually taunts him. 00:11:36.060 --> 00:11:36.740 Verse 45. 00:11:38.100 --> 00:11:38.379 He says, 00:11:38.460 --> 00:11:40.280 I come to you in the name of the Lord. 00:11:41.100 --> 00:11:43.360 The Lord will deliver you into my hands. 00:11:43.540 --> 00:11:46.800 I will strike you down and I'm going to cut off your head. 00:11:47.420 --> 00:11:48.540 And he does it. 00:11:48.539 --> 00:11:49.019 Trust. 00:11:49.019 --> 00:11:52.500 And that's our usual lesson. 00:11:53.539 --> 00:11:54.879 Trust in the Lord. 00:11:56.919 --> 00:11:59.139 Be brave and courageous. 00:12:00.219 --> 00:12:06.519 And just like David, you can win those big battles in your life. 00:12:08.980 --> 00:12:12.360 You see, there's a big problem with that lesson. 00:12:12.360 00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:38.320 You might be able to defeat a broken home. 00:12:39.039 --> 00:12:41.960 You might be able to defeat a bad marriage. 00:12:42.360 --> 00:12:44.120 Or a drug addiction. 00:12:44.940 --> 00:12:47.060 You might be able to strike down cancer. 00:12:47.300 --> 00:12:49.759 Or achieve that elusive college degree. 00:12:51.019 --> 00:12:54.100 We all face challenges. 00:12:55.779 --> 00:12:58.899 And we all find inspiration in David. 00:13:02.039 --> 00:13:05.879 But you see, there's only one true Goliath. 00:13:07.320 --> 00:13:10.680 And it actually dominates the biblical storyline. 00:13:10.679 --> 00:13:15.699 When you study a passage, you always have to put it in context. 00:13:18.699 --> 00:13:21.739 Sin dominates the biblical storyline. 00:13:22.559 --> 00:13:25.239 Sin separates us from God. 00:13:25.399 --> 00:13:28.399 And we cannot defeat it. 00:13:29.659 --> 00:13:34.559 You see, we make the mistake of always placing ourselves in David's shoes. 00:13:34.559 --> 00:13:42.119 In actuality, we've got to put ourselves in Saul's shoes. 00:13:45.019 --> 00:13:49.279 The story isn't about David, the inspiration. 00:13:50.139 --> 00:13:52.899 It is about David, the substitute. 00:13:52.899 --> 00:13:57.899 We must remember that overall story of the Bible. 00:13:58.059 --> 00:13:59.720 That God promises a redeemer. 00:14:00.620 --> 00:14:02.360 He promises a substitute. 00:14:02.519 --> 00:14:05.240 He promises someone to stand in our place. 00:14:06.399 --> 00:14:09.059 God promised Jesus. 00:14:09.059 --> 00:14:18.079 And all along the way, God gives us glorious illustration after illustration about what that looks like. 00:14:18.080 --> 00:14:22.540 In the Old Testament, he gave us priests. 00:14:23.460 --> 00:14:25.820 Priests represent man to God. 00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:28.480 They offer sacrifices for sin. 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:32.660 Jesus is the ultimate priest who offers himself. 00:14:35.240 --> 00:14:36.940 God gave us prophets. 00:14:38.020 --> 00:14:39.660 God's voice to man. 00:14:39.659 --> 00:14:39.759 Jesus was the one. 00:14:40.759 --> 00:14:45.039 Jesus was the one the prophets pointed to. 00:14:45.959 --> 00:14:49.759 Prophet, priest, king. 00:14:50.819 --> 00:14:54.179 The king would go and fight the battle for the people. 00:14:55.319 --> 00:14:56.360 Be their representative. 00:14:57.360 --> 00:14:58.579 Be their substitute. 00:15:00.039 --> 00:15:02.480 David, the true king, 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:06.159 steps into Saul's place 00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:11.579 and represents all of God's people. 00:15:13.360 --> 00:15:16.659 David's action as king points us to Christ. 00:15:17.480 --> 00:15:20.600 Christ fills the roles of prophet, priest, and king. 00:15:21.019 --> 00:15:23.399 Roles we cannot fill. 00:15:24.879 --> 00:15:28.139 We can't follow Christ to the cross. 00:15:29.159 --> 00:15:31.319 He must go there in our place. 00:15:32.819 --> 00:15:35.399 So we can't look at this passage and say, 00:15:35.399 --> 00:15:37.139 I can be like David. 00:15:38.939 --> 00:15:40.659 We can't be the substitute. 00:15:41.500 --> 00:15:42.799 We can't be the redeemer. 00:15:43.279 --> 00:15:44.699 And we can't be the king. 00:15:45.419 --> 00:15:48.079 We need a substitute. 00:15:48.860 --> 00:15:49.720 A redeemer. 00:15:50.500 --> 00:15:51.340 And a king. 00:15:53.079 --> 00:15:55.059 So that's the point of this passage. 00:15:55.240 --> 00:15:56.299 That's the gospel. 00:15:58.679 --> 00:16:02.000 And when David steps down into the valley to fight Goliath, 00:16:02.079 --> 00:16:04.259 he represents all of Israel. 00:16:04.259 --> 00:16:06.059 When Christ died on the cross, 00:16:06.179 --> 00:16:07.980 he represents all of us. 00:16:08.700 --> 00:16:09.879 At the cross, 00:16:10.379 --> 00:16:13.080 Christ faced our Goliath. 00:16:13.720 --> 00:16:15.939 The sin that separates us from God. 00:16:16.039 --> 00:16:19.519 The sin that causes death and misery. 00:16:19.819 --> 00:16:20.899 And he won. 00:16:22.319 --> 00:16:23.799 And because he won, 00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:26.500 we win. 00:16:26.500 --> 00:16:48.620 --> 00:16:51.600 Many of you know Bob Greenman. 00:16:51.720 --> 00:16:56.299 Bob Greenman has told me before that, you know, he's a huge fan of the Cubs. 00:16:56.799 --> 00:16:59.060 And he said, you know, anyone can have a bad century. 00:16:59.059 --> 00:17:08.139 Millions of Cub fans have suffered for a long, long time. 00:17:08.579 --> 00:17:10.799 They aren't bandwagon fans. 00:17:11.639 --> 00:17:15.599 It's lifelong, loyal, live-and-die fandom. 00:17:16.139 --> 00:17:18.779 And that's who we are. 00:17:18.779 --> 00:17:23.299 But we cheer from the stands. 00:17:26.299 00:18:18.620 --> 00:18:21.680 Jesus doesn't need any of our help. 00:18:22.420 --> 00:18:27.200 The essence of salvation, which is promoted here and throughout Scripture, 00:18:29.240 --> 00:18:31.940 00:19:21.160 Now, I had my doubts, but I said, okay. 00:19:21.879 --> 00:19:25.440 So I lift her up and put her on that first rung. 00:19:26.099 --> 00:19:28.500 And I step away and I say, okay, go. did a great job. 00:20:04.879 --> 00:20:08.679 But why don't you do it next time without choking Daddy? 00:20:08.680 --> 00:20:14.700 And she looks at me and she says, well, I can't do it without you. this equipment on David, it says that David put them off. 00:20:39.840 --> 00:20:43.100 God doesn't need our help. 00:20:43.920 --> 00:20:48.580 God saves you on his own, without you. 00:20:48.579 --> fight, it was over before it began. 00:21:01.720 --> 00:21:03.139 It was a total mismatch. 00:21:03.579 --> 00:21:06.779 As we read earlier, David slings a stone. 00:21:06.919 --> 00:21:08.619 He hits Goliath in the head. 00:21:09.000 --> 00:21:10.199 And Goliath dies. 00:21:10.200 --> 00:21:15.100 And then David draws his sword and cuts his head off. 00:21:16.880 --> 00:21:20.840 It has to put Genesis 3 in our minds. 00:21:21.900 --> 00:21:26.799 In Genesis 3, God says that the Redeemer will crush the head of the serpent. 00:21:27.840 --> 00:21:33.880 Here, David crushes the head of Goliath with a stone, and then he chops it off for good measure. 00:21:33.880 --> 00:21:40.500 This story has always been seen as David being the underdog. 00:21:42.280 --> 00:21:44.300 This victory was not an upset. 00:21:45.920 --> 00:21:50.740 God's chosen king, a man after God's own heart, he's going to win. 00:21:51.720 --> 00:21:52.740 It's guaranteed. 00:21:56.340 --> 00:21:59.700 So how should we apply this to our lives? 00:21:59.700 --> 00:22:06.680 We should be reminded that every road leads to Jesus. 00:22:07.299 --> 00:22:10.600 Every path takes us to the cross. 00:22:10.740 --> 00:22:12.480 Every problem we face. 00:22:14.160 --> 00:22:16.840 Every circumstance we find ourselves in. 00:22:18.440 --> 00:22:25.539 And as we deal with things that are going on in our own lives, we must remember that we need a substitute. 00:22:25.539 --> 00:22:30.259 That we cannot fight the Goliath of sin and death. 00:22:30.579 --> 00:22:34.519 And that Goliath causes all the misery and challenges we face. 00:22:36.000 --> 00:22:37.960 We got to go to the source. 00:22:40.379 --> 00:22:44.940 We must see that we are actually Saul in this story. 00:22:44.940 --> 00:22:51.940 But we can. 00:22:52.920 --> 00:22:55.880 We cannot be David, but we can. 00:22:56.759 --> 00:23:01.980 Because of Christ, because of his victory over our biggest giant, 00:23:03.039 --> 00:23:10.380 with his power in us, we can fight other giants. 00:23:10.380 --> 00:23:17.560 We can fight failure and disappointment. 00:23:18.560 --> 00:23:28.460 We can fight illness and brokenness and struggles and sin that ensnares us. 00:23:28.880 --> 00:23:33.560 We can fight those things because he won. 00:23:33.559 --> 00:23:42.119 I always tell my congregation that salvation is free and it is costly. 00:23:43.659 --> 00:23:47.240 Salvation is free to us. 00:23:49.740 --> 00:23:52.319 By grace you have been saved. 00:23:53.039 --> 00:23:56.500 It is costly to God. 00:23:57.539 --> 00:24:03.019 He gave his only son to suffer and die for your victory. 00:24:03.559 --> 00:24:09.319 And it is costly to us in following Christ. 00:24:11.480 --> 00:24:17.000 The only way we can do it is standing in the power of our substitute. 00:24:18.460 --> 00:24:21.500 In Christ we can. 00:24:22.819 --> 00:24:25.079 His victory is ours. 00:24:26.119 --> 00:24:28.099 And we should never forget that. on inspiration. 00:24:42.799 --> 00:24:45.480 Don't look at David and say, I can do that. 00:24:47.080 --> 00:24:49.200 Lean on the substitutes. 00:24:49.200 --> 00:25:00.519 If you fast forward many years later, if you flip in your Bibles all the way into 2 Samuel chapter 11. 00:25:00.519 --> 00:25:12.319 If you read that chapter, you would see King David at his lowest point. 00:25:13.440 --> 00:25:15.879 He has sinned terribly. 00:25:17.359 --> 00:25:19.740 He sleeps with another man's wife. 00:25:19.740 --> 00:25:23.740 And then to cover it up, he murders her husband. 00:25:25.500 --> 00:25:28.039 We must remember this. 00:25:29.539 --> 00:25:33.880 David in his role of king pointed to Jesus. 00:25:34.160 --> 00:25:35.660 But he wasn't Jesus. 00:25:36.599 --> 00:25:39.539 He points us to him. 00:25:39.539 --> 00:25:43.799 So he also needed Jesus. 00:25:47.639 --> 00:25:54.440 In the next chapter, the prophet Nathan in chapter 12 calls out David's sin. 00:25:54.700 -->
