find it fruitful if we pause first 00:01:24.939 --> 00:01:33.219 and think about a time in your life when maybe you were at a moment of weakness or vulnerability 00:01:33.219 --> 00:01:39.800 and someone actually took advantage of you or maybe even manipulated you, deceived you, 00:01:39.859 --> 00:01:43.859 or tricked you in some way, sort of took advantage of you in a moment of weakness. 00:01:43.859 --> 00:01:52.519 Or even think about a time when someone maybe unjustly accused you or criticized you 00:01:52.519 --> 00:01:59.299 for something that you didn't do or came at you in a way that was full of misrepresentations and untruth. 00:02:01.900 --> 00:02:05.579 Or think about a time even when maybe someone betrayed you, 00:02:05.879 --> 00:02:10.099 like a close friend or a colleague or even a spouse or a brother or sister. 00:02:10.099 --> 00:02:14.879 Or think about a time when someone that you loved and trusted betrayed your trust 00:02:14.879 --> 00:02:20.199 and abandoned you and worked for your hurt and not for your good. 00:02:22.400 --> 00:02:27.560 If you get a personal experience like that in mind, as unpleasant as it is, 00:02:27.639 --> 00:02:31.439 with all the emotion and all the anguish and all the anger and hurt that it brings up, 00:02:32.099 --> 00:02:36.019 then I think you'll be able to connect with our passage tonight. 00:02:36.020 --> 00:02:41.240 Because in our text tonight, David is experiencing all of those things. 00:02:43.360 --> 00:02:47.820 David in this chapter endures all sorts of unjust reproach and betrayal. 00:02:48.420 --> 00:02:52.879 At this point in his life's story, he's on the run from his son Absalom. 00:02:53.040 --> 00:02:55.120 He's fleeing the city of Jerusalem, the capital. 00:02:55.760 --> 00:02:58.980 And in chapter 15 that we looked at before the holidays, 00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:04.160 we found that David in his flight was greeted mostly by friends along the way. 00:03:04.159 --> 00:03:10.840 But now here in chapter 16, he's greeted not by his friends, but by his foes. 00:03:12.300 --> 00:03:17.639 And the chapter ends with him having been manipulated and cursed and betrayed. 00:03:20.539 --> 00:03:25.560 So as we dive into this chapter, I want us to think about three things, three questions. 00:03:26.539 --> 00:03:29.620 First, why does all this happen to David? 00:03:30.300 --> 00:03:32.240 And why do things like this happen to us? 00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:38.280 Second, how does David respond to this harsh reality? 00:03:39.200 --> 00:03:44.520 And then third, how can we today respond similarly? 00:03:46.620 --> 00:03:47.700 So that's where we're going. 00:03:47.920 --> 00:03:49.879 Let's read 2 Samuel chapter 16. 00:03:49.879 --> 00:03:57.599 When David had passed a little beyond the summit, that is the summit of the Mount of Olives, 00:03:57.659 --> 00:03:58.639 which was east of Jerusalem. 00:03:58.780 --> 00:04:01.299 David's, remember, on the run from his son Absalom. 00:04:02.780 --> 00:04:06.740 When David had passed a little beyond the summit, Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, met him 00:04:06.740 --> 00:04:12.159 with a couple of donkeys saddled bearing 200 loaves of bread and 100 bunches of raisins 00:04:12.159 --> 00:04:14.639 and 100 of summer fruits and a skin of wine. 00:04:14.639 --> 00:04:17.620 And the king said to Ziba, why have you brought these? 00:04:18.539 --> 00:04:22.579 Ziba answered, the donkeys are for the king's household to ride on, the bread and summer 00:04:22.579 --> 00:04:26.139 fruit for the young men to eat, and the wine for those who faint in the wilderness to drink. 00:04:26.819 --> 00:04:28.879 And the king said, and where is your master's son? 00:04:29.779 --> 00:04:32.060 Ziba said to the king, behold, men went on the road with Shimei, while Shimei went along on the hillside opposite him and cursed as he went and threw stones at him and flung dust. 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:17.240 And the king and all the people who were with him arrived weary at the Jordan. 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:19.399 And there he refreshed himself. 00:06:19.399 --> 00:06:25.359 Now Absalom and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem and Ahithophel with him. 00:06:25.579 --> 00:06:31.279 And when Hushai the archite, David's friend, came to Absalom, Hushai said to Absalom, long live the king, long live the king. in those days, the counsel that Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the word of God. 00:07:25.079 --> 00:07:28.759 So was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed both by David and by Absalom. 00:07:45.719 Help us, we pray. 00:07:46.560 --> 00:07:46.879 Amen. 00:07:48.979 --> 00:07:54.939 So as we said, David in this chapter experiences some of the hardest human relational experiences, 00:07:55.120 --> 00:07:56.319 I think, that we go through. 00:07:56.839 --> 00:07:59.659 He's tricked, he's cursed, and in the end he's betrayed. 00:07:59.660 --> 00:08:07.580 Now, at first, it's kind of hard to parse things out, but he's tricked, you see, by Ziba, 00:08:08.760 --> 00:08:09.939 the first one he meets. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:12.060 We met Ziba actually back in chapter 9. 00:08:12.680 --> 00:08:15.740 He was a servant in Saul's household, the king that preceded David, 00:08:16.260 --> 00:08:21.200 and David gave to Ziba the stewardship over what was left of Saul's house and his ancestral property, 00:08:21.520 --> 00:08:28.020 and in particular, David gave Ziba as a servant to Saul's remaining heir, Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth. 00:08:28.019 --> 00:08:33.799 And Mephibosheth, you remember, had been injured as a child and was lame in both of his feet. 00:08:34.939 --> 00:08:38.340 And at first glance, it seems like Ziba's doing David a great favor, right? 00:08:38.399 --> 00:08:42.799 Here he is providing tasty food and drink and transportation to David and his followers 00:08:42.799 --> 00:08:45.120 when they're weary and weak on their trek into the wilderness. 00:08:46.579 --> 00:08:49.600 But, you know, when we read the rest of the story of 2 Samuel, 00:08:49.740 --> 00:08:52.179 especially if you were to skip ahead and read chapter 19, 00:08:53.279 --> 00:08:56.980 we learn that Ziba's intentions here are not what they seem. 00:08:58.019 --> 00:09:03.199 Ziba claims that his master, Mephibosheth, has abandoned David and gone over to Absalom, 00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:06.139 but we'll find later that that's simply just not true. 00:09:07.819 --> 00:09:10.399 Mephibosheth has, it seems, remained loyal to David, 00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:16.059 and here Ziba is taking advantage of David's position of weakness and need, 00:09:16.620 --> 00:09:17.759 showing up with gifts, 00:09:18.919 --> 00:09:20.259 lying about his master, 00:09:20.259 --> 00:09:27.139 all in order to manipulate David into giving him the rights over Mephibosheth's property. 00:09:28.899 --> 00:09:30.600 The commentator Matthew Henry wrote, 00:09:30.819 --> 00:09:33.120 no longer content to be the manager, 00:09:33.759 --> 00:09:35.600 Ziba wants to be the master. 00:09:37.259 --> 00:09:38.759 And for the time being, it works. 00:09:39.340 --> 00:09:40.259 David believes the story, 00:09:40.779 --> 00:09:41.580 he receives the gifts, 00:09:42.080 --> 00:09:43.039 and is deceived. 00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:46.719 The next person David meets is Shimei, 00:09:47.179 --> 00:09:48.299 a descendant of Saul, 00:09:48.819 --> 00:09:49.759 who curses David. 00:09:49.860 --> 00:09:55.299 That is, he sort of calls down God's, you know, wrath upon his head, 00:09:55.899 --> 00:09:57.199 calling him a man of blood, 00:09:57.299 --> 00:09:59.379 saying that he deserves all that's happening to him 00:09:59.379 --> 00:10:02.819 because he butchered Saul's family on his way to being the king. 00:10:04.579 --> 00:10:07.480 Now, of course, if you've been following the story of 1 and 2 Samuel, 00:10:07.480 --> 00:10:11.800 you know, actually, that Shimei's accusation isn't true. 00:10:13.980 --> 00:10:19.420 David actually has dealt incredibly honorably towards Saul and his family. 00:10:20.700 --> 00:10:22.840 I mean, you remember all those times in 1 Samuel 00:10:22.840 --> 00:10:26.019 when David refuses to lift his hands against Saul. 00:10:27.759 --> 00:10:31.820 So this reproach that Shimei flings at David along with all the stones and all the dirt, 00:10:31.899 --> 00:10:33.240 it's all unjust, it's all undeserved. 00:10:34.100 --> 00:10:37.000 And then lastly here, there's the episode with Hushai and Ahithophel. 00:10:37.860 --> 00:10:40.940 Now, Hushai in these final paragraphs comes to Jerusalem 00:10:40.940 --> 00:10:44.860 actually as a spy on behalf of David. 00:10:45.480 --> 00:10:47.600 So the one guy that looks like he is selling David out 00:10:47.600 --> 00:10:49.460 is actually on David's side in this chapter. 00:10:50.279 --> 00:10:52.460 He's winning his way into Absalom's court, 00:10:52.779 --> 00:10:55.039 hoping to be something of kind of a fifth column 00:10:55.039 --> 00:10:56.360 to undermine Absalom, 00:10:56.460 --> 00:10:59.000 or at least to be sort of an inside pair of eyes and ears 00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:01.279 for David who's had to run into the wilderness. 00:11:01.759 --> 00:11:03.300 You can look back in chapter 15 00:11:03.300 --> 00:11:06.060 to see how David and Hushai sort of plotted 00:11:06.059 --> 00:11:08.519 this risky counterinsurgence maneuver 00:11:08.519 --> 00:11:10.119 that Hushai is all about here. 00:11:10.659 --> 00:11:12.779 And next week, we're going to see how that goes 00:11:12.779 --> 00:11:14.419 in chapter 17. 00:11:15.439 --> 00:11:19.119 But then there's this character of Ahithophel, 00:11:19.799 --> 00:11:24.239 who at one point was David's trusted and esteemed counselor, 00:11:25.019 --> 00:11:26.619 his right-hand man. 00:11:26.620 --> 00:11:32.100 And we find that Ahithophel sides with Absalom's insurrection. 00:11:33.179 --> 00:11:34.799 And he tells Absalom to do what? 00:11:34.840 --> 00:11:38.299 To go up on the roof and to sleep with David's concubines. 00:11:38.919 --> 00:11:41.480 And that that would be a sign to all of the city 00:11:41.480 --> 00:11:44.940 that Absalom is now in control of all that was David's, 00:11:45.120 --> 00:11:47.519 down to his very household, down to his very bedroom. 00:11:48.179 --> 00:11:49.100 Absalom owns it all. 00:11:49.100 --> 00:11:55.220 In other words, Ahithophel totally betrays David. 00:11:56.820 --> 00:12:00.240 Now, why does all this happen --> 00:12:17.440 when something better comes along, right? 00:12:17.440 --> 00:12:20.280 Now, you might ask, why? 00:12:20.940 --> 00:12:21.900 Why does that happen? 00:12:24.280 --> 00:12:25.660 Now, sometimes these things happen 00:12:25.660 --> 00:12:28.540 because of consequences for our own actions, right? 00:12:29.440 --> 00:12:31.480 David had blown it big time with Bathsheba, 00:12:31.700 --> 00:12:33.460 and he'd even blown it in his relationship 00:12:33.460 --> 00:12:34.420 with Absalom himself. 00:12:34.780 --> 00:12:36.200 And now, maybe we might think 00:12:36.200 --> 00:12:38.200 that David is reaping more of what he's sown. 00:12:40.040 --> 00:12:43.100 But you know, that doesn't explain all of it, 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:45.300 either for David or for us, 00:12:45.300 --> 00:12:47.220 and it doesn't explain what's going on here in 16. 00:12:48.440 --> 00:12:49.240 I mean, think of it. 00:12:49.700 --> 00:12:52.320 Absalom's revolt is connected to David's failure and sin. 00:12:52.360 --> 00:12:53.360 There's no getting around that. 00:12:53.440 --> 00:12:54.960 We looked at that in chapter 15. 00:12:55.460 --> 00:12:56.660 David mourns for his trickery 00:13:01.600 --> 00:13:03.300 or Shimei's cursing 00:13:03.300 --> 00:13:05.040 or even Ahithophel's betrayal 00:13:05.040 --> 00:13:08.100 are necessarily the result of what David did. 00:13:08.840 --> 00:13:10.680 They're not logically connected to that 00:13:10.680 --> 00:13:12.480 in any intimate way. 00:13:12.480 --> 00:13:17.940 And so we need to see that sometimes 00:13:17.940 --> 00:13:20.700 we are going to undergo betrayal 00:13:20.700 --> 00:13:23.480 and cursing and even manipulation 00:13:23.480 --> 00:13:27.539 simply because we live in a fallen world. 00:13:27.539 --> 00:13:31.039 We live in a fallen world 00:13:31.039 --> 00:13:33.839 and it's full of people like ourselves 00:13:33.839 --> 00:13:35.399 who are fallen and who are sinful. 00:13:37.639 --> 00:13:38.959 Why does all this happen to David? 00:13:39.039 --> 00:13:39.819 Because tragically, 00:13:40.219 --> 00:13:41.959 this is kind of how life goes 00:13:41.959 --> 00:13:43.299 in the fallen world. 00:13:43.419 --> 00:13:44.620 We'll be sinned against. 00:13:46.379 --> 00:13:48.139 The life of the saint, you see, friends, 00:13:48.179 --> 00:13:49.639 will not be a rosy walk 00:13:59.980 David is going down the Mount of Olives 00:13:59.980 --> 00:14:00.800 and figuratively, 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:02.120 he's sort of heading down 00:14:02.120 --> 00:14:04.400 in all of these ways. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:07.140 There will be valleys of darkness and betrayal. 00:14:08.640 --> 00:14:10.700 And I think it's good to be reminded of this 00:14:10.700 --> 00:14:13.259 so we 00:14:56.160 And I think that means that 00:14:56.160 --> 00:14:59.300 we shouldn't really sort of shake our fist at God 00:14:59.300 --> 00:15:00.879 when people do sinful things against us.
