They're very unique. They're very simple, but yet they're full of depth. 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:56.799 Today, as we are in this Easter season, let us remember first and foremost 00:00:56.799 --> 00:01:01.379 the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:01:01.899 --> 00:01:06.519 Let us recognize that it is Jesus who is the way, the truth, and the life. 00:01:06.519 --> 00:01:16.399 Jesus being born in a manger, Him teaching these parables that we are going over, the miracles that He performed, 00:01:17.039 --> 00:01:22.739 walking on water, calming the storm, healing the sick, raising people from the dead. 00:01:22.739 --> 00:01:26.859 It goes to show you the power of who our God is. 00:01:27.299 --> 00:01:29.560 That God is consistent in His Word. 00:01:30.039 --> 00:01:34.939 And God continues to speak to us through His Word and through others as well. 00:01:35.899 --> 00:01:39.219 And we're grateful for our Lord and our God. 00:01:39.219 --> 00:01:48.760 You've just heard Mark Iseri read the parable of the wicked tenants from the Gospel of Matthew. 00:01:49.760 --> 00:01:52.319 And we're going to go into this. 00:01:53.459 --> 00:01:59.359 Because it's a very interesting parable that shows us something of great significance. 00:01:59.359 --> 00:02:03.239 You see, this parable is found in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:02:03.560 --> 00:02:06.939 It's found in the Gospel of Mark and in Luke as well. 00:02:06.939 --> 00:02:13.020 So when you see something that shows up three times, it's something that you should pay attention to. 00:02:13.099 --> 00:02:13.280 Amen? 00:02:14.579 --> 00:02:20.919 So we see this three times where Jesus entered in Jerusalem and He's confronting the religious leaders. 00:02:21.599 --> 00:02:26.939 And the religious leaders, they realize that this parable is targeted. 00:02:27.099 --> 00:02:28.919 It's aimed directly at them. 00:02:28.979 --> 00:02:34.379 The Scripture says that they acknowledged or they realized that this parable was towards kind of think of Napa, California specifically, or Sonoma. 00:03:02.860 --> 00:03:06.560 Those kind of things where you can see that kind of imagery. 00:03:07.700 --> 00:03:16.180 And what we have in here are certain symbols from the text that they have certain representations. 00:03:16.180 --> 00:03:23.159 So we have the vineyard then, which represents the people of God. 00:03:23.900 --> 00:03:26.060 It's representing Israel. 00:03:27.360 --> 00:03:33.780 We then have the fence, which is symbolic for God's protection. 00:03:34.340 --> 00:03:37.560 You want to have a fence or a wall around your vineyard, right? 00:03:37.600 --> 00:03:42.360 Because in a lot of times in Scriptures, it's saying you don't want people stealing your crops kind of thing. 00:03:42.360 --> 00:03:46.040 That makes a lot of sense, right, why we have fences and walls especially. 00:03:47.200 --> 00:03:56.960 And then you have the winepress here, which you see that there's the fruit that's growing on the vine or in the vineyard. 00:03:57.240 --> 00:04:04.520 And there's this expectation from the Lord to an expectation of harvest. 00:04:04.520 --> 00:04:15.760 So not only are we to bear fruit, there's this expectation, at least in this scene, where there must be producing fruit. 00:04:15.879 --> 00:04:19.759 And in this case, we could just say making wine for this sake. 00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:28.420 You have the tower in the background then, which is representing God's care and provision for his people, right? 00:04:28.420 --> 00:04:34.400 Like when you have a tower for a vineyard especially, you want to be able to look out, yes, at the beautiful sunrise and sunset. 00:04:34.400 --> 00:04:40.240 But you also want to be able to also protect if anyone is going into the vineyard. 00:04:40.319 --> 00:04:41.360 Does that make sense, church? 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:42.439 Okay. 00:04:43.340 --> 00:04:48.639 Now, we don't have the picture of the tenants or the servants or the son or the owners and the new tenants. 00:04:48.639 --> 00:04:52.280 But you still get at least the scene of what is going on. 00:04:52.279 --> 00:05:04.299 So we have the tenants, which is a representation of the people of God, their leaders, representing also the people of God. 00:05:04.679 --> 00:05:11.419 We have also the servants, which represents the prophets that were sent by God. 00:05:12.419 --> 00:05:21.299 Then the son, which represents Jesus Christ as the, well, as the heir, as the messenger. 00:05:22.279 --> 00:05:25.459 And then the owner, which is God the Father. 00:05:26.539 --> 00:05:28.639 And then new tenants. 00:05:29.319 --> 00:05:35.359 Well, as we know in scripture, that there is the mystery of Christ that is revealed, 00:05:35.819 --> 00:05:43.879 going from what used to be exclusive to the people of God, being available for everyone who believes in the Lord. 00:05:43.879 --> 00:05:52.240 So, it is showing that from once the Jewish people, now going to all who believe in Christ. 00:05:52.360 --> 00:05:53.620 Does that make sense, church? 00:05:54.399 --> 00:05:54.659 Okay. 00:05:55.480 --> 00:06:00.259 So, the new tenants is those who respond to Christ. 00:06:00.759 --> 00:06:02.600 I want us to go back here. 00:06:03.060 --> 00:06:05.779 Let's turn to the Gospel of Matthew. 00:06:05.779 --> 00:06:11.579 And I want you to see, knowing this, what we just went over, 00:06:12.119 --> 00:06:19.779 how beautiful this parable aligns with our understanding of God, His Word, and His plan for us. 00:06:20.939 --> 00:06:21.239 Right? 00:06:21.659 --> 00:06:30.000 There was a master of a house, God, who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:30.480 Okay? 00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:33.220 And He dug a wine press, right? 00:06:33.259 --> 00:06:36.759 The expectation of producing fruit. 00:06:38.279 --> 00:06:40.199 And leased it to tenants, right? 00:06:40.259 --> 00:06:42.879 There's this idea of stewardship that's in there. 00:06:43.459 --> 00:06:46.240 The people of God were to steward God's promises. 00:06:47.740 --> 00:06:48.860 And where did He go? 00:06:48.860 --> 00:06:54.400 So, the master went to another country, or the owner went to another country. 00:06:55.100 --> 00:07:00.900 When the season for fruit drew near, so there was a certain amount of time for fruit to be produced, 00:07:01.400 --> 00:07:04.460 He sent His servants to the tenants to get fruit, 00:07:05.379 --> 00:07:12.319 sending the messengers, the prophets, to go to the people of God to collect the fruit. 00:07:14.280 --> 00:07:15.600 And what did the tenants do? 00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:19.840 They take His servants, and do they welcome Him in? 00:07:21.020 --> 00:07:26.360 No, it says, they beat one, they killed another, and they stoned another. 00:07:27.500 --> 00:07:29.620 Again, He sent other servants. 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:35.120 I mean, if one servant got killed, if I was the owner, I'd be pretty upset. 00:07:35.280 --> 00:07:41.520 But continuing of sending servants here, giving more opportunity for the people of God. 00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:41.959 Okay? 00:07:43.060 --> 00:07:45.259 He sent other servants, more than the first. 00:07:46.159 --> 00:07:47.359 And did they welcome Him in? 00:07:48.539 --> 00:07:49.019 No. 00:07:49.699 --> 00:07:51.279 They did the same to them. 00:07:51.979 --> 00:07:57.159 And finally, He sent His Son, the heir. 00:07:58.519 --> 00:08:00.259 He sent His Son to them, saying, 00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:01.979 They will respect My Son. 00:08:02.819 --> 00:08:03.180 Right? 00:08:03.240 --> 00:08:04.680 That makes perfect sense. 00:08:04.740 --> 00:08:05.879 They're being disrespectful. 00:08:06.079 --> 00:08:10.579 They're doing all these terrible things to these messengers that I'm sending. 00:08:10.579 --> 00:08:12.659 Surely they would respect My Son. 00:08:12.740 --> 00:08:13.800 They're living in the vineyard. 00:08:13.899 --> 00:08:14.740 They're being there. 00:08:14.839 --> 00:08:15.740 They're dwelling there. 00:08:16.599 --> 00:08:17.899 Well, this is not the case. 00:08:19.579 --> 00:08:21.779 When the tenants saw the Son, they said to themselves, 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:23.000 This is the heir. 00:08:23.120 --> 00:08:25.959 Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance. 00:08:27.180 --> 00:08:29.439 Thinking that the death of the Son, 00:08:30.680 --> 00:08:32.220 they would, by killing him, 00:08:32.939 --> 00:08:33.639 they would gain. 00:08:34.559 --> 00:08:35.639 But here's the thing. 00:08:35.639 --> 00:08:39.039 And just as we talk about in this Easter season, 00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:42.539 evil thinks it can win. 00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:45.819 But in the end, evil does not win. 00:08:48.460 --> 00:08:51.139 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, 00:08:51.319 --> 00:08:52.879 what will he do to those tenants? 00:08:53.740 --> 00:08:55.220 He said to them, 00:08:55.299 --> 00:08:58.039 He will put wretches to a miserable death 00:08:58.039 --> 00:09:00.840 and let out the vineyard to other tenants 00:09:00.840 --> 00:09:02.960 who give him the fruits in their season. 00:09:02.960 --> 00:09:05.379 That is a very important thing, church, 00:09:06.060 --> 00:09:07.580 when we read that. 00:09:08.100 --> 00:09:10.600 Because it's representing the old covenant, 00:09:10.759 --> 00:09:13.720 the old system in which the Jewish people had 00:09:13.720 --> 00:09:16.500 prior to the new covenant. 00:09:16.500 --> 00:09:20.820 But it's all based in this kind of vineyard language, 00:09:20.940 --> 00:09:21.539 as it were. 00:09:23.700 --> 00:09:26.100 Those who will give him the fruits in their seasons, 00:09:26.220 --> 00:09:28.460 which goes to show the importance. 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:31.799 Church, it's important for us to recognize 00:09:31.799 --> 00:09:33.679 to believe in Jesus Christ, 00:09:34.379 --> 00:09:36.080 the death, burial, and resurrection. 00:09:37.019 --> 00:09:40.299 It's also important that upon believing in him, 00:09:40.740 --> 00:09:42.159 we are to bear fruit. 00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:45.480 We are to be molded by our Lord and our God, 00:09:46.100 --> 00:09:48.219 being transformed, right? 00:09:48.339 --> 00:09:49.740 The transformation of mind, 00:09:49.860 --> 00:09:51.219 the transformation of heart, 00:09:51.519 --> 00:09:53.699 the very essence of who we are 00:09:53.699 --> 00:09:56.679 should be on a trajectory of being more like him. 00:09:57.259 --> 00:09:59.600 That doesn't mean we're going to be perfect, though, does it? 00:10:00.360 --> 00:10:01.600 Are any of us perfect in here? 00:10:01.639 --> 00:10:02.339 Don't raise your hand. 00:10:02.459 --> 00:10:03.699 We'll talk later, right? 00:10:04.620 --> 00:10:06.039 But the reality is, 00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:07.659 nobody is perfect. 00:10:08.139 --> 00:10:10.019 But God continues to mold us. 00:10:10.019 --> 00:10:12.000 He continues to make us like him. 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:15.419 And so that's a very pivotal point there. 00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:18.240 Jesus said to them, 00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:19.879 have you not read in the scriptures? 00:10:19.980 --> 00:10:21.299 It's in the Gospel of Luke, 00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:23.879 where the Pharisees actually interject and said, 00:10:23.939 --> 00:10:24.759 this isn't the case. 00:10:25.120 --> 00:10:27.199 But Jesus is still saying in here, 00:10:27.860 --> 00:10:29.240 have you not read the scriptures? 00:10:29.439 --> 00:10:31.600 The stone that the builders rejected 00:10:31.600 --> 00:10:32.919 has become the cornerstone. 00:10:33.039 --> 00:10:34.240 This was the Lord's doing, 00:10:34.460 --> 00:10:36.340 and it is marvelous in our eyes. 00:10:36.340 --> 00:10:38.899 Therefore, the kingdom of God 00:10:38.899 --> 00:10:40.060 will be taken away from you 00:10:40.060 --> 00:10:42.340 and given to a people producing fruit, 00:10:42.420 --> 00:10:43.420 which goes to show, 00:10:43.740 --> 00:10:45.940 paving the way for salvation 00:10:45.940 --> 00:10:48.240 to be available for all who believe. 00:10:49.060 --> 00:10:50.780 And in that belief, 00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:52.899 we are called to be transformed, 00:10:53.080 --> 00:10:54.300 to grow in Christ, 00:10:54.820 --> 00:10:57.420 and to live and love like Jesus Christ. 00:11:04.220 --> 00:11:05.500 will be broken to pieces, 00:11:05.500 --> 00:11:07.259 and when it falls on anyone, 00:11:07.399 --> 00:11:08.320 it will crush him. 00:11:08.580 --> 00:11:09.620 And when the chief priests 00:11:09.620 --> 00:11:11.320 and the Pharisees heard this parable, 00:11:11.899 --> 00:11:14.080 they perceived that he was speaking about them. 00:11:14.379 --> 00:11:16.100 Daniel 2, verse 35? 00:11:28.139 --> 00:11:28.960 It's in your notes. 00:11:29.899 --> 00:11:31.279 Where it talks about a stone 00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:33.700 that gets thrown into a great statue. 00:11:33.700 --> 00:11:35.060 Some of you know what I'm talking about. 00:11:35.460 --> 00:11:38.120 The statue is made of bronze and iron and copper, 00:11:38.120 --> 00:11:39.640 and it shatters to pieces. 00:11:39.640 --> 00:11:42.520 It's actually a direct connection to Daniel, 00:11:42.700 --> 00:11:45.560 which is representing all of the kingdoms of the world 00:11:45.560 --> 00:11:47.220 will be shattered against God. 00:11:48.360 --> 00:11:50.060 Nations, people, groups, people 00:11:50.060 --> 00:11:54.180 without the stone will not prevail. 00:11:54.940 --> 00:11:57.040 So it's this wonderful tie-in 00:11:57.040 --> 00:11:58.560 with the Old Testament 00:11:58.560 --> 00:12:01.960 and just with lots of scripture in this. 00:12:01.960 --> 00:12:05.019 And so it's very interesting that in Daniel, 00:12:05.259 --> 00:12:06.480 where you have this stone, 00:12:06.540 --> 00:12:07.800 that's a very small stone, 00:12:07.879 --> 00:12:09.480 it takes down this giant statue 00:12:09.480 --> 00:12:10.740 and then grows into a mountain. 00:12:10.960 --> 00:12:12.379 What in the world's happening there? 00:12:12.519 --> 00:12:14.740 It's representing the kingdom of God, 00:12:14.820 --> 00:12:18.040 just like we've talked about the mustard seed, right? 00:12:18.100 --> 00:12:20.019 The seed that gets planted into the ground 00:12:20.019 --> 00:12:22.580 and it grows into something that is more powerful, 00:12:22.720 --> 00:12:23.700 something that is great, 00:12:23.700 --> 00:12:25.360 because that's how God works. 00:12:25.360 --> 00:12:28.340 It gets planted and it expands. 00:12:28.519 --> 00:12:31.639 And so the stone being our foundation, 00:12:31.639 --> 00:12:33.320 it expands. 00:12:34.300 --> 00:12:36.899 Do you build your life on Jesus 00:12:50.820 --> 00:12:53.260 being cast upon this statue 00:12:53.260 --> 00:12:55.580 and shattering to pieces. 00:12:56.160 --> 00:12:57.700 Does that make sense, church? 00:12:58.140 --> 00:12:59.260 Do you understand? 00:13:00.400 --> 00:13:01.780 I sure hope that you do. 00:13:02.780 --> 00:13:04.600 And so in all of this, 00:13:05.300 --> 00:13:06.980 the vineyard is planted with care. 00:13:07.640 --> 00:13:09.160 God entrusts his people. 00:13:09.620 --> 00:13:11.600 The servants are beaten and they're killed. 00:13:11.720 --> 00:13:13.160 It's prophetic rejection. 00:13:20.680 --> 00:13:22.180 and the wicked tenants are destroyed. 00:13:22.720 --> 00:13:25.060 And then there is the cornerstone prophecy, 00:13:25.639 --> 00:13:28.280 which Christ is the new foundation 00:13:28.280 --> 00:13:30.860 and the kingdom is transferred 00:13:30.860 --> 00:13:33.060 for all who bear fruit. 00:13:33.580 --> 00:13:35.519 So not we must believe in the Lord, 00:13:35.960 --> 00:13:37.800 but we also must grow in him 00:13:37.800 --> 00:13:40.000 and be moved to do good in his name. 00:13:40.379 --> 00:13:42.060 So what does all of this mean then 00:13:50.700 O as an observation. 00:13:50.860 --> 00:13:52.460 What in the world is going on in the text? 00:13:52.960 --> 00:13:54.259 I is for interpretation. 00:13:54.460 --> 00:13:55.820 What are the lessons we can learn? 00:13:56.220 --> 00:13:57.740 And thirdly is the application. 00:13:57.879 --> 00:13:59.159 What do we do about this? 00:13:59.799 --> 00:14:01.680 So let's go to that next slide. 00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:03.620 It is the I interpretation. 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:06.000 What can we learn and interpret from this? 00:14:06.419 --> 00:14:08.799 The first thing is that God sends people 00:14:08.799 --> 00:14:11.820 even when we reject them. 00:14:11.820 --> 00:14:16.000 God's patience is showing 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:19.500 that God is not quick to anger 00:14:19.500 --> 00:14:22.540 because he is continually sending these prophets 00:14:22.540 --> 00:14:24.780 to speak to the people 00:14:24.780 --> 00:14:26.660 to get them to change, 00:14:27.120 --> 00:14:29.400 to get them to see their evil ways 00:14:29.400 --> 00:14:31.320 and to turn to the Lord. 00:14:31.940 --> 00:14:33.300 That's a pattern that we see 00:14:33.300 --> 00:14:35.280 and we also can recognize 00:14:35.280 --> 00:14:38.140 that mercy is shown before judgment 00:14:38.140 --> 00:14:40.320 that God does extend mercy. 00:14:40.320 --> 00:14:43.840 It's much like when we think about salvation here 00:14:43.840 --> 00:14:45.660 for the Christian. 00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:48.500 God gives a certain amount of time 00:14:48.500 --> 00:14:49.480 but not forever. 00:14:50.160 --> 00:14:51.379 That's an important thing. 00:14:53.140 --> 00:14:55.160 And so in 2 Chronicles, 00:14:55.260 --> 00:14:56.500 it's in your notes, 00:14:56.700 --> 00:14:58.820 chapter 36, verses 15 through 16, 00:14:58.820 --> 00:15:01.620 it mentions that time and time again 00:15:01.620 --> 00:15:04.080 he sent messengers. 00:15:04.740 --> 00:15:07.300 Again, showing the mercy of God. 00:15:07.299 --> 00:15:11.019 In Hebrews, chapter 1, verses 1 through 2, 00:15:11.179 --> 00:15:12.199 in time past, 00:15:12.559 --> 00:15:14.559 God spoke now through his son, 00:15:14.620 --> 00:15:16.359 which is talking about Christ, 00:15:16.439 --> 00:15:18.259 from prophets to Christ. 00:15:19.439 --> 00:15:20.659 And so in all of this, 00:15:20.719 --> 00:15:21.959 it just means that God 00:15:21.959 --> 00:15:23.779 doesn't give up easily on you. 00:15:23.899 --> 00:15:25.399 God is merciful and he gives, 00:15:25.779 --> 00:15:27.279 he gave the people of God 00:15:27.279 --> 00:15:28.959 lots and lots of time. 00:15:29.339 --> 00:15:30.620 In the same way, 00:15:30.719 --> 00:15:32.279 he gives us the opportunity 00:15:32.279 --> 00:15:34.959 to turn to him in faith. 00:15:34.960 --> 00:15:37.280 The second thing then 00:15:37.280 --> 00:15:38.700 is rejecting the son 00:15:38.700 --> 00:15:39.860 leads to what, church? 00:15:40.920 --> 00:15:41.800 To judgment. 00:15:42.600 --> 00:15:43.720 The murder of the son 00:15:43.720 --> 00:15:46.040 goes to show the depravity, right? 00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:47.340 It goes to show the depth 00:15:47.340 --> 00:15:49.320 of the rebellion of these people. 00:15:49.879 --> 00:15:51.580 And the stone imagery then 00:15:51.580 --> 00:15:53.000 is showing that Christ, 00:15:53.680 --> 00:15:56.460 well, he is showing a new system, 00:15:56.920 --> 00:15:58.620 a new way of doing things. 00:15:58.960 --> 00:16:01.120 Instead of following the law, 00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:03.419 it is now about grace.
