we as Christians make sense of these things? 00:04:45.099 --> 00:04:49.240 Earthquakes, famines, hurricanes, epidemics, wars. 00:04:49.240 --> 00:04:52.300 That are constantly ravaging our world. 00:04:53.259 --> 00:04:57.439 What should as Christians our response be to such things? 00:04:58.439 --> 00:05:04.259 What we know from scripture is that not all natural disasters are a direct result of sin. 00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:10.639 For example, the disasters that happened to Job and to his children are not a direct result of sin. 00:05:10.639 --> 00:05:16.919 But scripture also tells us that some natural disasters are a direct result of sin. 00:05:17.019 --> 00:05:27.439 For example, in Ezekiel 14.21 it says that God's four disastrous acts of judgment are sword, famine, wild beasts, and pestilence that came upon Jerusalem. 00:05:27.759 --> 00:05:31.919 Because the city was, quote, full of blood and full of injustice. 00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:41.920 Similarly, Jeremiah 3.2-3 tells us that the drought that God inflicted Israel with was because they had polluted the land with their whoredom. 00:05:42.439 --> 00:05:44.620 That's a reference to their idolatry. 00:05:46.080 --> 00:05:56.139 Genesis 15.16 says that Israel's conquest of the Amorites in the promised land in Canaan was at least in part because their iniquities had been filled up. 00:05:56.139 --> 00:06:05.360 So scripture does, even though we are perhaps not always comfortable making these connections between, you know, idolatry and drought. 00:06:05.699 --> 00:06:07.620 Between violence and epidemics. 00:06:07.939 --> 00:06:11.680 Scripture does in some places make very clear connections like that. 00:06:12.300 --> 00:06:15.959 And even when we can't be certain that all calamities are directly connected to sin. 00:06:16.099 --> 00:06:20.479 We do know from Romans 8 that in a general and ultimate sense. 00:06:20.659 --> 00:06:25.599 All of the futility and brokenness that we witness in our world is a result of sin. 00:06:26.139 --> 00:06:35.319 Every injustice, every disaster, every loss, every death is at least in part a result of sin that has corrupted our world from top to bottom. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:36.439 Why? 00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:41.279 Because it says the whole world, the whole creation has been subjected to futility. 00:06:41.719 --> 00:06:42.659 It says in Romans 8. 00:06:43.240 --> 00:06:45.360 And that it's in bondage to corruption. 00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:50.439 The world is corrupted so that it's groaning in the pains of childbirth. 00:06:50.899 --> 00:06:52.479 Awaiting God's redemption. 00:06:52.480 --> 00:06:58.160 So when you read in the news of earthquakes and famines, hurricanes, epidemics and wars, 00:06:58.160 --> 00:07:03.939 these are all signs that tell us that this world is not the way it's supposed to be. 00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:09.240 There's something wrong with the world as it currently is. 00:07:10.439 --> 00:07:13.040 We live in a world that is corrupted. 00:07:13.160 --> 00:07:16.879 We live in a world that is under the sentence of divine judgment. 00:07:16.879 --> 00:07:22.759 Not only humans, but all of creation is groaning under the weight of that sin. 00:07:23.759 --> 00:07:28.199 And we know also, as we've been in the book of Revelation, that since Jesus' first coming, 00:07:28.259 --> 00:07:33.219 he has ushered in the last days or the end times as scripture speaks of it. 00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:39.159 Because the spirit of God has been poured out upon all flesh as Joel 2 prophesied would happen in the last days. 00:07:39.160 --> 00:07:41.700 And so we are living presently in the last days. 00:07:41.800 --> 00:07:47.300 We are not at the end of the end times, but we are at, at least, the beginning of the end times began with Jesus. 00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:54.980 And that means the groaning and the pain of childbirth of all creation that Romans 8 speaks of is only getting worse. 00:07:56.080 --> 00:08:04.080 So to use that analogy further, the contractions are getting more intense and more frequent as time goes by. 00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:08.599 And the nearer we get to the time of Jesus' return, his second coming. 00:08:09.959 --> 00:08:14.099 So then what should be our response to these kinds of disasters that afflict the earth? 00:08:15.839 --> 00:08:17.899 Jesus gives us the answer in Luke 13. 00:08:18.620 --> 00:08:24.639 There, his disciples ask him a couple of very relevant questions that I think we could see ourselves asking. 00:08:25.159 --> 00:08:29.939 There were these Galileans, Jews, who were offering sacrifices to God. 00:08:29.939 --> 00:08:38.440 But then Pilate, the Roman officer, killed them and then mingled their blood with the sacrifice. 00:08:38.580 --> 00:08:45.200 So not only desecrating the sacrifice, but using the humans that he just slaughtered, the Jews slaughtered, 00:08:45.639 --> 00:08:50.519 which was a huge, tragic, horrible incident. 00:08:51.320 --> 00:08:59.440 And then in addition to that, there were 18 men during that time who died when the Tower of Siloam collapsed upon them. 00:09:00.320 --> 00:09:02.740 And so they were asking Jesus this question. 00:09:02.960 --> 00:09:10.180 These kinds of horrible events, surely they must have done something terribly evil for those things that happened to them, right? 00:09:10.680 --> 00:09:12.120 That's their question to Jesus. 00:09:12.940 --> 00:09:18.080 And Jesus tells them, I'm paraphrasing, no, that's not necessarily the case. 00:09:18.440 --> 00:09:23.560 But unless you repent, you all will likewise perish. 00:09:23.760 --> 00:09:24.900 That's Jesus' answer. 00:09:24.899 --> 00:09:35.819 Jesus does not allow his disciples to retroactively, you know, cast moral judgment on people just because some calamity fell upon them. 00:09:35.860 --> 00:09:37.240 He says, no, you can't do that. 00:09:37.559 --> 00:09:38.740 That's not allowed. 00:09:38.740 --> 00:09:51.139 However, he does use this opportunity to teach that every misfortune and every calamity in the world points to the reality that we are living in a sinful world that is under the sentence of divine judgment. 00:09:51.139 --> 00:09:59.419 So we should see every single one of these things as opportunities for self-examination and repentance. 00:10:00.279 --> 00:10:04.960 Instead of denouncing the world when these things happen, we need to call them to repentance. 00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:11.680 It says in Romans, I mean, Revelation 9, 20 to 21, we're not actually going to get there today, but I'll read here. 00:10:11.780 --> 00:10:17.920 It says, the rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues did not repent of the works of their hands, 00:10:18.200 --> 00:10:25.120 nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk. 00:10:25.780 --> 00:10:31.400 Nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts. 00:10:31.399 --> 00:10:36.279 So that's kind of the conclusion after these seven trumpets, or at least six of them, are blown. 00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:40.620 That they should have repented when these things happened, but they didn't. 00:10:41.220 --> 00:10:47.120 And that's the main point of our passage this morning, that the sovereign judgments of God should lead us to repentance. 00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:53.759 I read a helpful article that actually Ed shared with me this week from a theologian named Thomas Schreiner. 00:10:53.759 --> 00:11:01.399 And he helpfully compares these judgments in Revelation to fire alarms that warn us of looming disaster. 00:11:02.059 --> 00:11:04.159 And they alert us to flee, right? 00:11:05.659 --> 00:11:09.720 However, if you're like me, and I live in a condo, so fire alarms go off all the time. 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:11.639 I think I set them off half the time. 00:11:12.439 --> 00:11:17.539 It's, you know, put something too wet on a hot thing, and it just smoke comes up, and the fire alarm goes off. 00:11:17.539 --> 00:11:22.319 And I think, and also there's drills, because we need to be trained to know what to do. 00:11:22.500 --> 00:11:25.399 So people are just kind of desensitized to fire alarms. 00:11:25.699 --> 00:11:29.159 I don't think I've ever seen anybody run from a fire alarm. 00:11:30.019 --> 00:11:34.599 And that's kind of the unfortunate reality that we are, I think, all familiar with. 00:11:35.120 --> 00:11:41.179 In 2000, there was a freshman residence hall in a college, a Seton Hall University campus in New Jersey. 00:11:41.259 --> 00:11:43.159 I don't know if you guys know about this incident in 2000. 00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:45.240 I guess that's kind of a while ago. 00:11:45.240 --> 00:11:53.500 So, and there were a couple drunk students that decided that it would be a good idea to set something on fire inside the common room. 00:11:54.060 --> 00:12:00.159 And because it was really cold outside, I thought it would be funny to make the fire alarm go off and make people have to go wait and shiver outside. 00:12:00.680 --> 00:12:01.980 But the fire spread. 00:12:02.519 --> 00:12:05.899 Thankfully, the fire alarm worked, and it was ringing all over the building. 00:12:06.360 --> 00:12:14.659 However, the students, because they had gotten so used to the alarm, the false alarms going off all the time in the dorm, that they didn't do anything. 00:12:15.240 --> 00:12:17.060 And three of them ended up dying. 00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:20.360 And 58 people were injured. 00:12:21.379 --> 00:12:27.019 This was one of the worst incidents of campus fire in recent memory in United States history. 00:12:27.879 --> 00:12:33.159 And that's kind of a cautionary tale for what we're seeing here in the book of Revelation. 00:12:33.159 --> 00:12:39.639 The trumpet judgments of God that we're going to see, the four of those today, are not a drill. 00:12:40.959 --> 00:12:43.860 They are not a false alarm. 00:12:44.899 --> 00:12:50.860 They are real and urgent warnings that call a sinful world to repentance. 00:12:50.860 --> 00:12:57.759 So instead of getting accustomed to ignoring them, we need to pay attention to them. 00:12:59.200 --> 00:13:03.180 And so let's pay attention to them and look at them in turn, the divine fire alarms together. 00:13:03.320 --> 00:13:04.680 We're going to look at the first four. 00:13:04.899 --> 00:13:08.060 They affect four different spheres of the created world. 00:13:08.560 --> 00:13:10.759 First trumpet affects land. 00:13:10.960 --> 00:13:12.220 Second trumpet affects the seas. 00:13:12.399 --> 00:13:13.700 Third affects the fresh waters. 00:13:14.259 --> 00:13:17.860 Fourth affects the sky or the heavenly bodies. 00:13:17.860 --> 00:13:18.860 Third affect the fresh waters. 00:13:19.860 --> 00:13:22.480 I mentioned to you last week that there are three series. 00:13:22.580 --> 00:13:26.180 I've been saying this multiple times, that there are three series of seven judgments in Revelation. 00:13:26.680 --> 00:13:31.340 I know for some of you who are really good listeners and remember everything I say, this might be a little repetitive. 00:13:31.860 --> 00:13:35.639 But Revelation is a very complicated book, so I don't think it hurts to repeat things. 00:13:35.960 --> 00:13:38.139 So hopefully you can learn the structure of the book as we go. 00:13:38.539 --> 00:13:40.320 So there are three series of seven judgments. 00:13:40.680 --> 00:13:43.200 The seven seals, the seven trumpets, and seven bowls. 00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:50.800 And these judgments are not intended to be occurring in a linear chronological fashion, but rather in a cyclical way. 00:13:51.060 --> 00:13:55.420 If you try to understand them in a linear way, then you run into problems. 00:13:55.600 --> 00:14:00.620 There's contradictions and there's duplicates within these series of judgments. 00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:09.040 Each of these are cyclical, but the seventh judgment in each of these cycles is the final climactic judgment of God, 00:14:09.039 --> 00:14:15.620 where God himself appears in all his glory, so that there's flashes of lightning and rumblings and peals of thunder, 00:14:15.740 --> 00:14:19.399 which are marks of a theophany when God appears in his glory and power. 00:14:20.139 --> 00:14:27.799 So then the three series of judgments are different angles or viewpoints of the same divine judgments that occur throughout church history. 00:14:28.480 --> 00:14:30.659 However, there's a reason why John has three. 00:14:30.659 --> 00:14:39.000 He has three of them in turn instead of one to convey the fact that while these judgments do occur throughout all of church history, 00:14:39.199 --> 00:14:45.819 that there is a progressive intensification throughout church history of God's judgments that fall upon the earth. 00:14:46.559 --> 00:14:50.899 So I've been using the analogy of the Russian doll, right, to explain this. 00:14:50.899 --> 00:15:01.120 When the seventh seal is broken open, instead of seeing something, I mean, you do see the glory of God coming in his final judgment, 00:15:01.240 --> 00:15:03.319 but there's not a lot of explanation for what happens. 00:15:03.799 --> 00:15:05.679 Instead, it gives way to the seven trumpets. 00:15:06.100 --> 00:15:10.720 And when the last trumpet, the seventh trumpet, is blown, then it gives way to the seven bowls. 00:15:11.100 --> 00:15:14.759 So it's like you open a Russian doll and there's another one inside that looks just like it. 00:15:14.759 --> 00:15:23.740 But instead of getting smaller like the Russian dolls, the judgments actually get bigger and more intense with each cycle of seven judgments. 00:15:24.500 --> 00:15:31.019 So to give you the example that we see here, so earlier in chapter 6, verse 8, in the seals, 00:15:31.539 --> 00:15:37.019 death and Hades were given authority to kill a fourth of the earth. 00:15:38.659 --> 00:15:42.879 But then here in the trumpet series, God's judgments affect a third. 00:15:42.879 --> 00:15:46.759 You see that again and again and again in all these verses, a third, a third, a third. 00:15:47.500 --> 00:15:51.820 And then later in chapter 9, 15, four destroying angels are released to kill a third of mankind. 00:15:52.580 --> 00:15:57.500 Then still later in the bowl series, the third of the seven series of judgments, the three series of judgments, 00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:00.100 God's judgments affect all of creation. 00:16:00.220 --> 00:16:04.220 So he says in Revelation 16, 3, and every living thing died that was in the sea. 00:16:04.620 --> 00:16:10.200 So you can see the escalation, a fourth and a third and then all of creation. 00:16:10.200 --> 00:16:15.720 I don't think these fractions are precise figures that we're supposed to try to calculate 00:16:15.720 --> is taken from the image of the seventh plague of the hail that comes to kill or destroy all the crops and stuff in Egypt. 00:17:12.920 --> 00:17:16.140 And that's recorded in Exodus 9, 23 to 25. 00:17:16.779 --> 00:17:21.660 It says that the Lord sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down to the earth. 00:17:22.019 --> 00:17:24.500 And the Lord rained hail upon the land of Egypt. 00:17:24.980 --> 00:17:29.000 There was hail and fire flashing continually in the midst of the hail, 00:17:29.000 --> 00:17:34.759 very heavy hail, such as had never been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 00:17:35.380 --> 00:17:40.140 And the hail struck down every plant of the field and broke every tree of the field. 00:17:40.859 --> 00:17:43.420 So if you take the cue from that passage in Googling to figure out if these kind of things have ever been seen and observed before. 00:18:26.720 --> 00:18:29.559 And it does seem like it's actually not unusual for these things to happen, often these things happen together. 00:18:47.180 --> 00:18:49.299 They have such things called the dry thunderstorms, 00:18:50.240 --> 00:18:54.399 where thunderstorms with strong winds that are not
