answer this question for us this morning. 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:43.240 And if I could put Matthew's argument of why we should follow Jesus into one simple phrase, 00:07:43.860 --> 00:07:45.399 let me through our passage this morning, we're going to see three scenes. 00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:15.100 Each scene has a different arena, a different realm, 00:08:15.100 --> 00:08:21.980 in which Jesus is going to bring his authority into to fix, 00:08:22.820 --> 00:08:25.080 to realign things. 00:08:25.140 --> 00:08:28.840 He's going to use his authority, his prerogative, and his power 00:08:28.840 --> 00:08:34.200 to bring into order, to bring into perfect alignment 00:08:34.200 --> 00:08:39.139 that which has become absolute chaos. 00:08:39.139 --> 00:08:42.559 The first arena we see is the natural world. 00:08:42.659 --> 00:08:45.559 We see this in 8.23-27. 00:08:47.139 --> 00:08:49.340 The disciples decided to follow Jesus. 00:08:49.480 --> 00:08:51.679 They decided to get onto this boat with him. 00:08:52.759 --> 00:08:58.379 And very quickly, it becomes a lot different than perhaps what they expected. 00:08:59.279 --> 00:09:01.580 We thought following Jesus was going to be fun. 00:09:01.939 --> 00:09:03.019 We thought it was going to be easy. 00:09:04.179 --> 00:09:06.559 Now all of a sudden, he's downstairs taking a nap, 00:09:06.659 --> 00:09:07.779 and we're in the middle of a storm. 00:09:09.139 --> 00:09:11.159 Most of these men were fishermen, 00:09:11.879 --> 00:09:15.039 so they probably had some experience in storms, 00:09:15.539 --> 00:09:17.899 but not like this. 00:09:19.240 --> 00:09:22.620 They did everything they knew how to do to keep the boat up, 00:09:23.759 --> 00:09:26.379 but even them, at a certain point, 00:09:27.220 --> 00:09:29.279 realized that there was no hope for them. 00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:33.539 And so they run down to where Jesus is sleeping, 00:09:33.740 --> 00:09:35.340 and they stir him awake. 00:09:35.340 --> 00:09:37.820 And in verse 27, or I'm sorry, 00:09:39.660 --> 00:09:41.240 then they say to him, 00:09:41.740 --> 00:09:44.180 Lord, save us. 00:09:47.220 --> 00:09:48.840 They cry out, 00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:51.960 and he's right there, 00:09:52.120 --> 00:09:54.280 but they're still not confident 00:09:54.280 --> 00:10:00.000 that he's actually going to be able to save them. 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:03.299 Now for us, on this side of the cross, 00:10:03.379 --> 00:10:06.379 sometimes it's a little easy to poke fun at the disciples, isn't it? 00:10:07.320 --> 00:10:09.480 I mean, how foolish of them, how obey him? 00:11:03.820 --> 00:11:06.700 Indeed, what kind of man 00:11:06.700 --> 00:11:10.020 would have authority over nature? 00:11:12.100 --> 00:11:13.500 From a Jewish perspective, 00:11:13.600 --> 00:11:15.379 it can only be one thing, 00:11:15.460 --> 00:11:16.240 one person. 00:11:17.240 --> 00:11:18.860 It would have to be God. 00:11:20.760 --> 00:11:23.140 The Jewish faith 00:11:23.140
