little time in that passage and consider it. 00:00:18.780 --> 00:00:27.379 And I must confess that it's one of these passages that is so well known to me, known to most of us, 00:00:27.379 --> 00:00:31.419 that we almost pass it by when we read it. 00:00:32.420 --> 00:00:33.740 We see the miracle in it. 00:00:34.600 --> 00:00:40.500 Rarely we stop to consider what's happening in this account. 00:00:42.899 --> 00:00:49.899 The powerful miracle always stands in the forefront, that he fed so many people. 00:00:51.179 --> 00:00:54.259 Christ is this supernatural power. 00:00:54.259 --> 00:01:02.320 And we mustn't forget that there is supernatural elements to the goodness that we receive. 00:01:03.679 --> 00:01:13.840 And also, on the other hand, the supernatural side of the evil spirits that attack us and convict us. 00:01:13.979 --> 00:01:19.739 But in this passage, we see that wondrous working of Jesus Christ. 00:01:19.739 --> 00:01:33.060 But below the miracle, underneath the feeding of the 5,000, there's a richness to Christ that we see of his character. 00:01:33.060 --> 00:01:38.060 And I want to look at that tonight. 00:01:39.019 --> 00:01:46.299 And as we dwell on Christ and the way he approached it and the way he provided for these people, 00:01:46.420 --> 00:01:49.719 that we ourselves would be fed in our own soul. 00:01:51.140 --> 00:01:55.560 You can look at verse 34. 00:01:55.560 --> 00:02:05.480 When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd. 00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:12.719 And he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. 00:02:13.259 --> 00:02:16.659 And he began to teach them many things. 00:02:16.659 --> 00:02:21.120 It tells us there that Christ looked out over the people. 00:02:22.180 --> 00:02:26.099 As a shepherd would a flock of sheep. 00:02:27.919 --> 00:02:29.960 Sheep that were on the loose. 00:02:31.419 --> 00:02:34.919 And I'm sure to many of us, that is a relatable image. 00:02:35.939 --> 00:02:42.579 If we're travelling down the road, we may come across a flock of sheep that are loose on the road. 00:02:42.580 --> 00:02:45.020 And you don't know which way they're going to go. 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:50.939 You approach them, and they fear what is approaching them. 00:02:51.460 --> 00:02:53.540 Because it is not the shepherd that approached them. 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:55.700 It is not something that is known to them. 00:02:56.400 --> 00:02:59.580 And you just don't know which way they will go. 00:03:00.820 --> 00:03:06.420 And Jesus sees this group of people, this multitude as such. 00:03:07.340 --> 00:03:08.939 Sheep without guidance. 00:03:09.280 --> 00:03:10.920 Sheep that have gathered together. 00:03:10.919 --> 00:03:14.039 And they're not really sure where to go. 00:03:15.519 --> 00:03:18.479 But they're following after this man. 00:03:20.739 --> 00:03:26.000 And Jesus, as he looks out over them, has compassion on them. 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:32.099 He can see in his own understanding that they are essentially lost. 00:03:33.060 --> 00:03:35.679 He does not leave them, though, in that condition. 00:03:35.680 --> 00:03:44.280 And by the implications of what Christ does in this passage, he becomes their shepherd. 00:03:45.480 --> 00:03:50.219 He becomes the shepherd of the sheep that are before him. 00:03:50.219 --> 00:04:02.460 And as we look at this, it will maybe bring to mind thoughts of the shepherd from Psalm 23, which we'll sing in conclusion. 00:04:02.819 --> 00:04:08.780 And before we sing it, I want to maybe highlight the parallels that appear from this passage. 00:04:08.780 --> 00:04:13.840 Jesus here is the shepherd of the people. 00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:16.399 And he approaches them with compassion. 00:04:17.339 --> 00:04:22.100 But he is the shepherd that comes to the people that provides for them. 00:04:22.740 --> 00:04:24.399 He is the shepherd of compassion. 00:04:24.899 --> 00:04:28.720 And he is the shepherd of provision when we come to this passage. 00:04:28.720 --> 00:04:34.480 So how does Jesus become the shepherd of compassion? 00:04:37.080 --> 00:04:39.700 We look at this passage here. 00:04:40.700 --> 00:04:47.860 And from the beginning, it says that the apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 00:04:47.860 --> 00:04:53.600 And he said to them, come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest for a while. 00:04:54.460 --> 00:04:59.400 For many were coming and going and they had no leisure even to eat. 00:05:00.460 --> 00:05:09.660 It tells us of the disciples that they had been away and they've returned now, expressing all that had happened to them in that day. 00:05:10.120 --> 00:05:16.120 And there's an air of excitement in their return and reporting what had happened. 00:05:16.120 --> 00:05:19.560 The disciples were coming and going. 00:05:20.720 --> 00:05:24.540 Jesus says to them, come away. 00:05:26.439 --> 00:05:29.459 Come away by yourselves to a desolate place now. 00:05:30.540 --> 00:05:32.579 Take rest for a while. 00:05:34.480 --> 00:05:37.280 It says that they had no leisure to eat. 00:05:38.280 --> 00:05:38.840 There was no time. 00:05:38.899 --> 00:05:40.560 They were that busy doing good works. 00:05:41.560 --> 00:05:44.180 And you would expect them to carry on. 00:05:44.180 --> 00:05:47.980 But Jesus says, no, stop and come aside. 00:05:48.800 --> 00:05:50.379 Come aside and rest. 00:05:50.660 --> 00:05:53.459 Come aside and review. 00:05:54.800 --> 00:05:56.860 And then We're strengthened by gathering together and giving our praise and thanks to God. 00:06:20.339 --> 00:06:25.300 Coming aside for a while prepares us to go on. 00:06:25.819 --> 00:06:27.319 And we'll be ready to rise again. 00:06:27.319 --> 00:06:35.420 But we see that any opportunity that they have here in the passage was taken away. 00:06:36.899 --> 00:06:39.259 People had seen them in the boat from the shore. 00:06:39.939 --> 00:06:41.560 They identified it was Jesus. 00:06:41.839 --> 00:06:43.800 And they followed. 00:06:43.800 --> 00:06:55.620 And when he reaches the shore with the intention of resting, he's met by this great multitude. 00:06:56.840 --> 00:07:02.560 Now, this would probably be the moment where our compassion would run dry. 00:07:02.560 --> 00:07:09.939 We had been busy, tired, hungry, wanting to take rest. 00:07:10.899 --> 00:07:19.379 But we are met by people who have been following us and wanting to hear new things from us. 00:07:20.840 --> 00:07:21.920 How would we react? 00:07:23.759 --> 00:07:26.040 Well, Jesus is our example. 00:07:26.040 --> 00:07:32.879 Jesus expresses his compassion towards them. 00:07:35.260 --> 00:07:39.320 The shepherd saw --> 00:08:06.960 And you may think, well, this is the parable about the feeding of the 5,000. 00:08:09.420 --> 00:08:11.980 But initially, that's not the intention. 00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:16.900 Initially, it's a teaching of the 5,000. 00:08:17.580 --> 00:08:21.540 It was the initial intention of the gathering here. 00:08:22.640 --> 00:08:23.900 And so he taught them. 00:08:24.640 --> time is where a father pleads to christ that he would have compassion on his son 00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:22.960 for being possessed by an evil spirit so you can see this this word compassion whether it well how can we feed them do you want us to go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread and 00:16:05.919 --> 00:16:14.079 and give it to them to eat this cost would be near on a year's wage for one person
