Turn with me in your Bible, if you have one, to 2 Samuel chapter 1. 00:00:13.080 --> 00:00:18.120 If you're looking in one of the Pew Bibles, it is page 254. 00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:27.199 We are starting a new series tonight in the second half of the book of Samuel. 00:00:27.199 --> 00:00:34.100 If you were here this past spring, we did the first half of the book of Samuel, called 1 Samuel. 00:00:34.939 --> 00:00:36.159 And now we're at 2 Samuel. 00:00:36.799 --> 00:00:41.899 Before we dig into the passage, let me introduce our passage by asking this question. 00:00:41.980 --> 00:00:43.359 Have you ever had an enemy? 00:00:45.019 --> 00:00:52.539 Have you ever had an enemy who drove a wedge between you and your spouse or significant other, which resulted in them leaving you? 00:00:52.539 --> 00:01:00.780 Have you ever had an enemy who tried to poison your relationship with your best friend and permanently isolate you from each other? 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:09.519 Have you ever had an enemy who undermined your opportunities to get a stable job that you were well qualified for? 00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:23.939 Have you ever had an enemy who literally gathered an army to hunt you down, intimidated you into leaving your home country, chased you into the desert, and tried to kill you over and over again? 00:01:25.599 --> 00:01:29.280 Well, that was King David's experience of Saul. 00:01:30.280 --> 00:01:32.959 Or David's experience, before he was king, of King Saul. 00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:39.099 No less than 16 times in 1 Samuel, Saul tried to kill David. 00:01:40.199 --> 00:01:47.259 Besides that, Saul literally stole David's wife, Michal, from him, effectively isolated him from his closest friend, Jonathan, 00:01:47.859 --> 00:01:54.060 drove David into the forest, then into the wilderness, and finally into exile, living among the Philistines. 00:01:54.060 --> 00:02:00.900 Now, maybe some of you can relate to having an enemy in one or two of those ways. 00:02:01.040 --> 00:02:05.120 But probably for most of us, maybe we have to deal with people who are annoying. 00:02:06.359 --> 00:02:08.800 Maybe there's people who say mean things behind our back. 00:02:09.599 --> 00:02:11.960 Or occasionally get mad and yell at us. 00:02:12.699 --> 00:02:16.699 But most of us have never had to deal with an enemy at that level. 00:02:16.699 --> 00:02:24.459 Now, the good news for David is that his great enemy, Saul, is now dead. 00:02:25.459 --> 00:02:27.299 King Saul has been killed in battle. 00:02:27.979 --> 00:02:32.139 That's the last chapter of 1 Samuel, 1 Samuel 31, along with his son Jonathan. 00:02:32.819 --> 00:02:35.239 For the people of Israel, it was a national crisis. 00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:40.560 It's sort of like if the president and the vice president got assassinated on the same day. 00:02:41.359 --> 00:02:43.159 Right? It's never happened in American history. 00:02:43.159 --> 00:02:50.900 But for David, it was his golden opportunity to rise up and lead the people of Israel. 00:02:51.500 --> 00:02:53.800 To unify them and become their king. 00:02:54.259 --> 00:03:01.699 The prophet Samuel had already anointed David back several years ago, 1 Samuel chapter 16. 00:03:03.099 --> 00:03:06.439 Halfway through the book, he had anointed David to be the future king of Israel. 00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:10.139 Now, this evening, what we're going to look at is David's response. 00:03:10.139 --> 00:03:15.759 And what we're going to read and what we're going to look at is David's response to the death of Saul, his enemy. 00:03:16.899 --> 00:03:20.259 And as we look at his response, we'll see David's character begin to emerge. 00:03:20.259 --> 00:03:28.739 Because one of the clearest ways that we can see someone's character is how they deal with enemies and people who oppose them. 00:03:30.339 --> 00:03:31.599 And cause trouble for them. 00:03:31.659 --> 00:03:34.239 So let's read together 2 Samuel chapter 1. 00:03:34.240 --> 00:03:40.600 And after the death of Saul, when David had returned from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. 00:03:41.320 --> 00:03:45.560 And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul's camp with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:48.460 When he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage. 00:03:49.159 --> 00:03:50.700 David said to him, Where do you come from? 00:03:51.140 --> 00:03:53.260 And he said to him, I have escaped from the camp of Israel. 00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:55.260 And David said to him, How did it go? Tell me. 00:03:55.780 --> 00:03:57.640 And he answered, The people fled from the battle. 00:03:57.980 --> 00:04:00.240 And also many of the people have fallen and are dead. 00:04:00.240 --> see two responses to Saul's death. 00:06:43.879 --> 00:06:45.900 We see first the Amalekite messenger. 00:06:46.760 --> 00:06:49.800 And second, we see David's response along with his men. 00:06:50.740 --> 00:06:55.120 So let's look at these two responses in turn, and what we can take from them. 00:06:55.160 --> 00:06:57.380 First, the Amalekite's response to Saul's death. 00:06:58.340 --> 00:07:03.520 Now initially, this Amalekite appears to be a loyal and compassionate ally. 00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:04.960 Right? 00:07:05.040 --> 00:07:08.920 He arrives with his clothes torn, dust on his head, traditional expressions of grief. 00:07:09.400 --> 00:07:11.280 He says, I've escaped from the Israelite camp. 00:07:11.279 --> 00:07:17.299 He traveled over 80 miles to Ziklag, where David was sort of hiding out, or where David 00:07:17.299 --> 00:07:20.619 was staying, just to bring him this message. 00:07:20.699 --> 00:07:23.019 And he presents himself as a compassionate human being. 00:07:24.119 --> 00:07:26.799 Saul was in the middle of the battlefield, already wounded. 00:07:26.800 --> 00:07:28.540 No way he could survive. 00:07:28.939 --> 00:07:30.340 He put him out of his misery. 00:07:31.259 --> 00:07:32.360 He ended Saul's suffering. 00:07:33.139 --> 00:07:38.780 But when we look closer, it becomes clear that this Amalekite is actually not loyal and 00:07:38.780 --> 00:07:39.300 compassionate. 00:07:39.300 --> 00:07:44.240 Instead, we see that he was self-serving and deceptive. 00:07:45.300 --> 00:07:47.520 Now turn back a page if you're looking in the Bible. 00:07:48.160 --> 00:07:54.080 1 Samuel 31, verse 3 through 5, describes the death of Saul. 00:07:55.400 --> 00:07:56.379 Verse 3 says, 00:07:56.379 --> 00:08:20.240 So Saul's badly wounded. 00:08:20.240 --> 00:08:25.660 He says to his armor bearer, please, don't let me be killed by one of these foreigners. 00:08:27.660 --> 00:08:28.519 Kill me yourself. 00:08:28.600 --> 00:08:29.579 And the armor bearer says no. 00:08:29.699 --> 00:08:31.120 And so Saul falls on his sword himself. 00:08:31.740 --> 00:08:34.680 Now the Amalekite story is a little different. 00:08:35.960 --> 00:08:41.100 I saw Saul leaning on his spear, chariots and riders almost upon him. 00:08:41.720 --> 00:08:43.840 Saul asked me to end his suffering, and I did. 00:08:45.379 --> 00:08:49.259 But you know, there's something a little fishy about the Amalekite story. 00:08:50.240 --> 00:08:53.399 All right, verse 6 of chapter 1. 00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:54.379 He says, 00:08:54.620 --> 00:08:58.440 By chance, I happen to be on Mount Gilboa. 00:08:59.019 --> 00:09:00.340 That's sort of like saying, 00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:04.500 By chance, I happen to be walking through Newhallville at 2.30 in the morning. 00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:06.200 And I got mugged. 00:09:06.620 --> 00:09:07.879 Just by chance. 00:09:09.419 --> 00:09:10.879 No, it probably wasn't by chance. 00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:12.639 Right? 00:09:13.399 --> 00:09:17.960 And there was Saul, he says, all alone in the midst of the battlefield, 00:09:17.960 --> 00:09:22.000 leaning on his spear and people, the chariots and riders were upon him, 00:09:22.060 --> 00:09:24.639 but none of the Israelites were protecting him. 00:09:24.759 --> 00:09:25.040 Really? 00:09:26.740 --> 00:09:32.060 That would be very unlikely for the whole Israelite army to completely abandon 00:09:32.060 --> 00:09:35.960 the most important person, their commander-in-chief, their king, 00:09:35.960 --> 00:09:37.560 in the midst of the battle. 00:09:39.879 --> 00:09:42.639 And if the Amalekite really wanted to honor Saul, 00:09:43.720 --> 00:09:47.340 he wouldn't just swipe Saul's crown and armband. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.620 He would have at least tried to give Saul a decent burial. 00:09:50.620 --> 00:09:53.980 That was what the men of Jabesh Gilead did. 00:09:55.019 --> 00:09:57.820 Again, you can read it at the end of 1 Samuel chapter 31. 00:09:57.940 --> 00:10:02.200 They went and retrieved Saul's bones from the Philistine temple, 00:10:02.200 --> 00:10:04.200 where the Philistines had taken them the next day, 00:10:04.360 --> 00:10:07.820 and took them back home as an expression of honor to Saul. 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:12.879 That he wouldn't be defaced and hanging on the wall of a Philistine temple, 00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:15.779 but rather given a decent burial as an Israelite. 00:10:17.080 --> 00:10:18.279 So what really happened? 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:23.159 Well, most likely, this Amalekite was sort of scavenging, right? 00:10:23.240 --> 00:10:24.679 The battle had ended. 00:10:25.919 --> 00:10:26.759 It was sunset. 00:10:26.919 --> 00:10:29.759 The Philistines didn't do their looting until the next day. 00:10:29.799 --> 00:10:33.199 And so he thought, hmm, maybe I can grab some things. 00:10:33.740 --> 00:10:34.899 And he comes upon Saul. 00:10:35.299 --> 00:10:36.860 And he says, ooh, I know who this is. 00:10:37.179 --> 00:10:40.539 And ooh, I know that David and Saul have been rivals. 00:10:40.839 --> 00:10:44.039 And I bet if I bring the crown from Saul's head 00:10:44.039 --> 00:10:47.399 and bring the other royal insignia to David and present them to him, 00:10:47.399 --> 00:10:51.439 I will surely get a high place in David's kingdom. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:55.600 And David will know that I'm loyal to him and not to Saul. 00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:02.919 You see, the Amalekite was trying to take advantage of a national, 00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:06.779 of what was really a national tragedy for his own personal advancement. 00:11:06.779 --> 00:11:09.879 And David wanted nothing to do with that. 00:11:10.639 --> 00:11:13.220 He saw through this guy's hypocrisy. 00:11:14.319 --> 00:11:16.799 Verse 13, he says, where do you come from? 00:11:18.079 --> 00:11:20.179 And he says, I'm the son of a sojourner. 00:11:20.419 --> 00:11:25.259 Now that word, sojourner, it basically means a resident alien in Israel. 00:11:25.500 --> 00:11:32.419 It means a foreigner from another nation who chose to settle and live within the borders of Israel. 00:11:32.419 --> 00:11:36.559 So in other words, this guy has grown up in Israel. 00:11:37.819 --> 00:11:39.500 He knows what he's doing. 00:11:39.559 --> 00:11:41.679 He's not just sort of a random visitor passing through, 00:11:41.779 --> 00:11:44.099 doesn't really know what's going on, doesn't really know what he's doing. 00:11:44.360 --> 00:11:45.819 He knows who Saul is. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:47.339 He knows who David is. 00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:49.419 He knows exactly what he's doing. 00:11:51.019 --> 00:11:56.259 And he wasn't afraid to, he was bold and shameless. 00:11:56.259 --> 00:11:59.159 And David says, why were you not afraid? 00:12:00.179 --> 00:12:02.840 Why did you have no fear of God in you? 00:12:04.700 --> 00:12:07.539 That you put out your hand to destroy the Lord's anointed. 00:12:08.179 --> 00:12:14.000 Or perhaps that he concocted this whole deceptive story that he actually had when he actually hadn't, 00:12:14.100 --> 00:12:16.439 but he was wanting to boast about it. 00:12:17.960 --> 00:12:20.039 And wanting to use it for his own personal gain. 00:12:20.120 --> 00:12:21.759 And David orders his men strike him down. 00:12:21.759 --> 00:12:25.819 Now that might seem like a very harsh response. 00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:30.799 But as David said in verse 16, your own mouth has testified against you. 00:12:31.779 --> 00:12:33.639 You said, I killed the Lord's anointed. 00:12:34.379 --> 00:12:38.399 If you kill the Lord's anointed king, you deserve the death penalty. 00:12:38.980 --> 00:12:41.360 There was no such thing as life imprisonment back then. 00:12:41.639 --> 00:12:42.679 It wasn't even possible. 00:12:43.299 --> 00:12:44.659 We can debate about the death penalty. 00:12:45.080 --> 00:12:46.580 That's another topic for another day. 00:12:46.580 --> 00:12:53.379 But if you kill the king, what else? 00:12:55.340 --> 00:12:58.100 And you see, David was on his way to becoming the king of Israel. 00:12:58.200 --> 00:13:01.320 But he wanted to make it very clear from the start. 00:13:02.600 --> 00:13:10.200 That my kingdom and God's kingdom will be marked by loyalty and truthfulness and the fear of God. 00:13:10.200 --> 00:13:20.400 And so willful deception and shameless disobedience and rejoicing over an enemy's demise must not gain a foothold in my kingdom. 00:13:21.180 --> 00:13:22.900 That's the point that David was making. 00:13:25.320 --> 00:13:29.560 That he didn't take advantage of this event. 00:13:30.400 --> 00:13:34.700 He didn't think, finally, Saul, my enemy is dead. 00:13:35.600 --> 00:13:36.500 He wept. 00:13:37.740 --> 00:13:39.080 Saul, the king. 00:13:40.200 --> 00:13:41.160 Has been killed. 00:13:43.240 --> 00:13:47.720 I think it would have been very tempting for David to simply rejoice over Saul's death. 00:13:48.940 --> 00:13:50.520 Rejoice over his newfound freedom. 00:13:50.660 --> 00:13:52.540 Perhaps immediately proclaim himself king. 00:13:53.120 --> 00:13:54.440 Before anyone else could. 00:13:54.800 --> 00:13:57.840 Immediately exterminate anyone who is connected with Saul. 00:13:57.940 --> 00:13:59.920 That was the typical practice of kings back then. 00:14:01.160 --> 00:14:02.240 You sort of clean house. 00:14:02.879 --> 00:14:05.379 And get rid of everyone else who is connected with the former kingdom. 00:14:05.720 --> 00:14:07.100 When you're replacing someone. 00:14:07.100 --> 00:14:10.759 But David didn't do that. 00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:12.620 David wept. 00:14:15.440 --> 00:14:17.960 And that's really the central emphasis of this chapter. 00:14:17.960 --> 00:14:22.420 If you look at the story in verse 1 through 16. 00:14:23.420 --> 00:14:25.280 It starts with the Amalekite arriving. 00:14:26.019 --> 00:14:28.100 And then David questions the Amalekite. 00:14:28.340 --> 00:14:30.100 And then in the middle of the conversation. 00:14:30.600 --> 00:14:33.540 When David realizes that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead. 00:14:33.920 --> 00:14:35.360 He stops the conversation. 00:14:35.519 --> 00:14:36.360 And he just weeps. 00:14:36.840 --> 00:14:37.780 And it says they wept. 00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:38.680 And they mourned. 00:14:38.720 --> 00:14:39.860 They fasted until evening. 00:14:39.860 --> 00:14:42.460 And then later on David continues the conversation. 00:14:42.460 --> 00:14:43.840 And asks him a couple more questions. 00:14:43.960 --> 00:14:45.960 And then the Amalekite departs. 00:14:45.980 --> 00:14:47.419 Or he's struck down. 00:14:47.500 --> 00:14:47.680 Right? 00:14:48.600 --> 00:14:50.779 But right in the center of this narrative. 00:14:52.019 --> 00:14:53.159 Is David weeping. 00:14:53.840 --> 00:14:56.340 And the author wants to draw our attention to that. 00:14:57.519 --> 00:15:00.019 That this whole conversation back and forth is interrupted. 00:15:00.800 --> 00:15:01.779 By David weeping. 00:15:01.860 --> 00:15:02.259 And then. 00:15:02.980 --> 00:15:05.460 In the rest of the chapter we see David's lament. 00:15:07.200 --> 00:15:08.000 For Saul. 00:15:08.600 --> 00:15:09.379 And Jonathan. 00:15:10.480 --> 00:15:11.279 And this lament. 00:15:12.279 --> 00:15:14.580 Marks the midpoint of the book of Samuel. 00:15:15.539 --> 00:15:17.659 The book of Samuel is really one book in two parts. 00:15:17.779 --> 00:15:19.279 First and second Samuel what we have. 00:15:19.779 --> 00:15:22.120 Probably just because it was too long to fit on one scroll. 00:15:22.340 --> 00:15:24.200 And so they divided it into two. 00:15:24.600 --> 00:15:25.500 For convenience. 00:15:26.980 --> 00:15:28.659 Because they couldn't fit it all in one scroll. 00:15:28.659 --> 00:15:30.799 But at the beginning of first Samuel. 00:15:30.919 --> 00:15:31.799 There's the song of Hannah. 00:15:33.240 --> 00:15:36.139 It's a song about God raising up the humble. 00:15:36.539 --> 00:15:37.799 And bringing down the proud. 00:15:38.379 --> 00:15:39.740 And at the end of second Samuel. 00:15:39.939 --> 00:15:41.980 There's a psalm of David. 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:45.600 About how God has exalted him. 00:15:45.700 --> 00:15:46.919 And how God is my rock. 00:15:47.220 --> 00:15:48.319 And God is my fortress. 00:15:48.460 --> 00:15:51.179 And he has raised David up to be the king. 00:15:51.419 --> 00:15:53.240 And David's giving glory to God for that. 00:15:53.279 --> 00:15:54.080 And right in the middle. 00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:56.559 We have this poetic lament. 00:15:57.159 --> 00:15:58.700 And those are the three poems in the book. 00:15:58.700 --> 00:16:00.279 The rest of the book is just a long story. 00:16:00.279 --> 00:16:04.579 But this lament sort of marks the midpoint of the book. 00:16:07.579 --> 00:16:10.819 And the key line is repeated three times. 00:16:10.959 --> 00:16:12.959 Verse 19, verse 25, verse 27. 00:16:13.100 --> 00:16:15.120 How the mighty have fallen. 00:16:15.120 --> 00:16:24.560 Now I think there's a few things that we can learn from this passage about grieving. 00:16:25.100 --> 00:16:28.799 And about responding to loss and tragedies. 00:16:28.799 --> 00:16:35.240 So first, it's right to mourn the loss of a loyal friend. 00:16:35.579 --> 00:16:37.459 Who
