of Acts, I mean, look at what happens in the early church. 00:05:56.259 --> 00:05:58.339 This early church had this spirit, right? 00:05:58.480 --> 00:06:02.819 And they saw the Lord add to their numbers in one city 5,000 people. 00:06:02.899 --> 00:06:08.659 5,000 people embracing the unbelievable good news of the crucified and yet risen Christ. 00:06:08.740 --> 00:06:13.019 And my question for us today is, Christ Church, why not also here? 00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:16.420 Why not also in Berkeley, Oakland, the East Bay? 00:06:16.759 --> 00:06:18.159 Why not also here? 00:06:18.259 --> 00:06:22.560 What are we expecting from God in this season and in the season to come? 00:06:22.620 --> 00:06:29.480 What do we really believe that the Spirit of God is able and willing to do here? Resurrection power that makes the lame to leap, that turns beggars into brothers, 00:07:21.299 --> 00:07:26.000 a world in which the extraordinary is ordinary in the name of Jesus Christ. 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:29.879 Now, last week we left off with a snapshot, right? 00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:33.399 A snapshot of a basic day in the life of the early church. 00:07:33.500 --> 00:07:37.639 They had these predictable up, in and out patterns in the early church, 00:07:37.639 --> 00:07:41.500 every day devoted to the Word of God and to prayer and to fellowship with one another 00:07:41.500 --> 00:07:45.620 and to serving each other and their community with signs and wonders and generosity. 00:07:45.779 --> 00:07:49.779 And people were just like flocking to this vibrant and joyful community 00:07:49.779 --> 00:07:54.420 that was simply living out of the resurrection life of Jesus Christ's Spirit. 00:07:54.420 --> 00:07:58.240 Every day, all they were doing was just being the Spirit-filled church. 00:07:59.120 --> 00:08:01.540 And so I love how our text starts today in verse 1. 00:08:01.620 --> 00:08:05.360 It says, one day, like the extraordinary was so ordinary to them, 00:08:05.520 --> 00:08:10.819 like, oh yeah, that man who was lame and sat outside the temple for over 40 years, 00:08:11.120 --> 00:08:13.460 that guy, oh yeah, he was able to walk one day. 00:08:13.840 --> 00:08:15.560 He was able to leap for joy one day. 00:08:15.759 --> 00:08:18.200 And all of a sudden, after 40 years of being outside the temple, 00:08:18.200 --> 00:08:22.700 he was inside the temple praising God and hanging out with Peter and John and everyone else. 00:08:22.699 --> 00:08:27.959 Oh yeah, really just another day in the life of the Spirit-filled church. 00:08:28.899 --> 00:08:33.480 Now yes, there was a special quality to the apostolic age 00:08:33.480 --> 00:08:36.639 when God laid down some very unique foundations for the church, 00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:38.600 but we must not assume, Christ's church, 00:08:38.980 --> 00:08:45.600 that the apostles were any less dependent upon the Spirit's power and guidance than the rest of us. 00:08:46.360 --> 00:08:52.399 Sure, the apostles knew Jesus' command to be his witnesses in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, 00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:56.240 and to the ends of the earth, but they didn't know the exact plan for that. 00:08:57.019 --> 00:09:03.539 They were living day in and day out, up in and out, with their God, with each other, doing simple things. 00:09:04.179 --> 00:09:05.639 They were simply doing what they knew. 00:09:05.720 --> 00:09:13.399 They were being the church, again, up in and out, drawing people to God by their simple lives of faithfulness. 00:09:13.399 --> 00:09:18.600 Just seeing God draw more and more people to himself through their simple living. 00:09:19.620 --> 00:09:24.039 And I wonder if this is a word for many of us in the season that we are in, 00:09:24.139 --> 00:09:30.019 many of us who are constantly feeling paralyzed, without a plan, without clear direction, 00:09:30.199 --> 00:09:34.379 particularly in our cultural moment of intense activism. 00:09:34.379 --> 00:09:39.200 For those of us who want so much for this world, right? 00:09:39.700 --> 00:09:43.480 And we feel so responsible, and yet also like we don't know where to start. 00:09:44.460 --> 00:09:48.700 And then in our paralysis, we just end up neglecting to maintain the basics. 00:09:48.939 --> 00:09:55.919 Walking with God, walking with his people, bearing witness to Christ, to our neighbors in simple but not insignificant ways. 00:09:56.620 --> 00:09:59.679 In a sense, the apostles, they were keeping it real simple. 00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:05.219 Again, up, in and out, predictable patterns in their church family, and they just let God do the rest. 00:10:05.319 --> 00:10:10.939 He would open doors, and then he would close doors, and they would be prayerful and sensitive to the Spirit's leading, 00:10:11.120 --> 00:10:16.559 and then they would just walk through the doors that he opened, and not try to force open the ones that he closed. 00:10:16.759 --> 00:10:19.079 And the doors that he did open, though, they were incredible. 00:10:19.719 --> 00:10:22.839 And I think that's what's happening here in Acts chapter 3. 00:10:22.919 --> 00:10:24.659 And I want us to picture this scene, okay? 00:10:24.659 --> 00:10:26.579 Picture this scene in Acts chapter 3. 00:10:26.580 --> 00:10:29.860 Peter and John were up to their same spiritual rhythms. 00:10:30.020 --> 00:10:33.460 They're on their way to the temple, 3 in the afternoon, to pray, right? 00:10:33.740 --> 00:10:39.480 With hundreds of faithful Jewish people, Jewish worshipers, all also walking to the temple gate. 00:10:40.139 --> 00:10:44.500 And there at this temple gate, it was called the Beautiful Gate, right? 00:10:44.540 --> 00:10:48.580 The Beautiful Gate of the Temple of God sat a lame beggar. 00:10:49.460 --> 00:10:51.780 Now, just picture this contradiction, right? 00:10:51.779 --> 00:10:55.759 Maybe even this indictment of God and God's people. 00:10:56.500 --> 00:11:05.039 At the beautiful gate of the Almighty's dwelling place is a lame beggar who had been sitting there for over 40 years, 00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:11.579 living off meager alms, the meager alms of an oppressed Jewish community in Jerusalem. 00:11:12.439 --> 00:11:17.500 Imagine this ironic picture, this indictment of the power and presence of God, 00:11:17.500 --> 00:11:20.639 a contradiction that the people probably all just got used to, right? 00:11:21.100 --> 00:11:26.100 After 40 plus years of a lame beggar sitting at the gate of the Temple of Yahweh, 00:11:26.620 --> 00:11:28.799 this gate that was supposed to be called Beautiful. 00:11:29.799 --> 00:11:36.899 For most of the visiting worshipers, for even this lame beggar, it's just another day living in this irony. 00:11:37.399 --> 00:11:38.679 Just another day living in this irony. 00:11:38.679 --> 00:11:44.479 But for Peter and John, who are filled with God's Spirit, what to everybody else is just another day, 00:11:44.799 --> 00:11:51.819 while everybody else had become calloused to the contradiction of a lame beggar at the beautiful gate of the Almighty Yahweh, 00:11:52.359 --> 00:11:56.620 for Spirit-filled followers of Jesus Christ, this became an occasion. 00:11:57.099 --> 00:12:01.739 An occasion to bear witness to the truly beautiful and strong name of Jesus. 00:12:02.659 --> 00:12:05.779 So verse 3 says that the lame beggar, he saw Peter and John. 00:12:05.779 --> 00:12:10.279 He saw him among the hundreds of others walking in, and this lame beggar, he just does his due diligence. 00:12:10.439 --> 00:12:14.179 You know, he got to make that ass to everyone who passes him, trying to make a penny. 00:12:14.480 --> 00:12:18.059 He asked them for some money, probably with little to no expectation, 00:12:18.199 --> 00:12:21.439 just like those unsheltered people we drive past all the time, 00:12:21.659 --> 00:12:29.379 who see, you know, 99 out of 100 cars drive past them every day without anyone even recognizing their dignity as human beings. 00:12:29.679 --> 00:12:34.799 This lame beggar probably expects more of the same from these two disciples of Jesus. 00:12:34.799 --> 00:12:40.639 A penny, if anything, probably nothing at all, and certainly not health, and certainly not salvation. 00:12:42.039 --> 00:12:45.159 And yet, verse 4 says, Peter looked straight at him. 00:12:45.620 --> 00:12:49.679 He looked straight at him, and I love that, because that's what Spirit-filled people do. 00:12:49.899 --> 00:12:50.819 He looks straight at him. 00:12:51.059 --> 00:12:57.479 Peter sees his humanity, and he invites him to look back, and they share this personal eye contact, 00:12:57.579 --> 00:13:03.379 so much more than the mechanical drop of a penny in the can that this lame beggar is used to, right? 00:13:03.379 --> 00:13:11.539 This guy has probably never seen someone look at him at this gate like Peter looked at him this day after 40-plus years of begging. 00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:13.500 He's never seen anything like this. 00:13:14.080 --> 00:13:20.399 Someone who really saw him and his humanity and his worth and his dignity and even his dreams and his hopes. 00:13:20.740 --> 00:13:23.139 Someone who really saw in him a bright future. 00:13:23.139 --> 00:13:33.100 And as their eyes locked in this special way, the lame beggar who was finally seen by another human being was filled with a tiny bit of hope. 00:13:33.659 --> 00:13:37.220 And he thinks, verse 5, that maybe he'll get two pennies instead of one. 00:13:37.659 --> 00:13:39.759 A gold coin instead of a silver. 00:13:40.519 --> 00:13:41.500 But Peter has neither. 00:13:41.980 --> 00:13:43.679 And yet, he has everything. 00:13:44.199 --> 00:13:46.340 He has everything that this man needs. 00:13:46.580 --> 00:13:48.559 No silver, no gold, and yet everything. 00:13:48.559 --> 00:13:50.599 And Peter says in verse 6, 00:13:50.819 --> 00:13:52.539 Silver or gold, I do not have. 00:13:53.099 --> 00:13:54.979 But what I do have, I give you. 00:13:55.239 --> 00:14:01.119 And it turns out that what Peter has is way better than what this lame beggar ever this man, he did so. 00:14:54.899 --> 00:14:57.039 He walked by faith in the name of Jesus. 00:14:57.120 --> 00:14:59.419 As Peter explains in verse 16, this was by faith. 00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:01.179 It wasn't a magic trick, guys. 00:15:01.939 --> 00:15:03.219 Verse 16, Peter says, 00:15:03.219 --> 00:15:04.779 By faith in the name of Jesus, 00:15:05.339 --> 00:15:07.740 This man whom you see and know was made strong. 00:15:08.019 --> 00:15:11.120 It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him 00:15:11.120 --> 00:15:13.480 That has completely healed him. 00:15:13.919 --> experienced what I like to call 00:16:04.139 --> 00:16:06.200 A holistic salvation. 00:16:06.720 --> 00:16:08.639 A salvation of his whole self, 00:16:08.740 --> 00:16:09.840 His whole being. 00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:11.159 Walking and leaping. 00:16:11.240 --> 00:16:13.580 He experienced a physical salvation. 00:16:14.679 --> 00:16:16.740 Able-bodied and probably now able to work, 00:16:16.960 --> 00:16:19.240 He experienced economic salvation. 00:16:20.460 --> 00:16:22.840 Look, he was walking into the temple 00:16:22.840 --> 00:16:25.080 With Peter and John 00:16:25.080 --> 00:16:26.860 And all these faithful Jewish worshippers 00:16:26.860 --> 00:16:28.399 Who had previously just walked by him, 00:16:28.399 --> 00:16:31.199 He had received social salvation. 00:16:32.259 --> 00:16:33.559 And yet, most importantly, 00:16:33.759 --> 00:16:36.360 After 40 years of sitting outside that temple, 00:16:36.620 --> 00:16:38.620 Hoping only in the scraps and crumbs 00:16:38.620 --> 00:16:40.259 Of countless worshippers of God, 00:16:40.360 --> 00:16:42.819 This man became a worshipper of God. 00:16:43.980 --> 00:16:46.019 He became what he was always meant to be.
