00:00:38.420 and learning what they have, what God has to say through those letters to us. 00:00:39.480 --> 00:00:47.980 But this morning, we're looking at a small moment, seemingly, in the story of We may struggle to grasp the significance of it, the point. 00:03:09.920 --> 00:03:13.780 We've grown up hearing many of these little miracles of Jesus, 00:03:13.960 --> 00:03:14.980 these things that he did. 00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:21.200 To really grasp this, what it's all about, we need to go back. 00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:25.400 We need to understand the full story of Jesus leading up to this point. 00:03:25.400 --> 00:03:30.360 It was about three years prior to this that Jesus of Nazareth appeared, 00:03:30.879 --> 00:03:35.740 seemingly out of nowhere to the nation, on the bank of the Jordan River. 00:03:37.080 --> 00:03:44.080 And John, the baptizing prophet, he began to point his followers to this man, Jesus. 00:03:45.640 --> 00:03:50.020 John said that this was the one that they'd all been waiting for, 00:03:51.080 --> 00:03:53.780 the one that God had chosen and sent. 00:03:53.780 --> 00:03:57.960 And very quickly, the attention of the whole nation all of a sudden shifted 00:03:57.960 --> 00:04:04.020 from John, the baptizing prophet, to now Jesus, this man from Nazareth. 00:04:04.599 --> 00:04:10.900 And people came from all over the nation to see Jesus, to hear Jesus. 00:04:11.699 --> 00:04:16.279 Some for miracles of healing, others just to hear his teaching. 00:04:18.220 --> 00:04:22.939 His teachings resonated deeply with many as having divine authority, 00:04:22.939 --> 00:04:27.579 God's authority in them, God's wisdom in them. 00:04:29.120 --> 00:04:32.459 Not only that, but of course, Jesus began to do miracles. 00:04:33.399 --> 00:04:34.819 All kinds of things. 00:04:35.860 --> 00:04:36.800 Great signs. 00:04:39.159 --> 00:04:45.199 Countless people were healed of all kinds of sicknesses, illnesses, diseases. 00:04:45.199 --> 00:04:48.959 Evil spirits were being cast out of people. 00:04:50.539 --> 00:04:56.039 On one occasion, the feeding of thousands with a boy's lunch out in the middle of nowhere. 00:04:56.040 --> 00:05:00.340 And other spectacular things. 00:05:00.340 --> 00:05:01.379 Walking on water. 00:05:01.879 --> 00:05:05.160 Even on one occasion, raising a little girl from the dead. 00:05:06.540 --> 00:05:08.600 Jesus took the spotlight of the nation. 00:05:09.160 --> 00:05:13.020 And the question that was rolling around in people's minds, 00:05:14.220 --> 00:05:16.660 who is this man? 00:05:16.660 --> 00:05:21.180 Is he a prophet sent by God? 00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:25.520 Is he the Messiah, the long-awaited Messiah? 00:05:27.520 --> 00:05:34.860 Or is he just a yokel, local, from the north, that's hoodwinking, gullible people? 00:05:34.860 --> 00:05:40.020 These are the discussions that they were having at dinner tables all over the country. 00:05:41.379 --> 00:05:44.160 And as time went on, many of you know the story. 00:05:44.360 --> 00:05:49.800 Jesus began to be loved by some, but hated by others. 00:05:50.840 --> 00:05:53.420 His followers who believed in him loved him. 00:05:53.420 --> 00:05:59.819 But the religious leaders and those who followed them, the religious leaders of the Jews, 00:06:00.020 --> 00:06:01.199 they didn't believe in him. 00:06:01.860 --> 00:06:04.840 And they got madder and madder at Jesus. 00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:09.639 And the tensions just kept rising between Jesus and his opponents. 00:06:10.379 --> 00:06:16.139 Until this moment, Jesus was on his way for the last time south to Jerusalem. 00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:19.300 Where he would be crucified. 00:06:19.300 --> 00:06:30.180 And on his way, Mark tells us that they came to the city of Jericho. 00:06:33.939 --> 00:06:38.439 Something special happened at the city gate of Jericho that Mark never forgot. 00:06:39.120 --> 00:06:41.620 Jesus and his disciples, they were just leaving the city. 00:06:42.300 --> 00:06:45.400 And there was a large crowd together with them. 00:06:45.399 --> 00:06:53.459 And there by the roadside, sitting on the ground, begging, was a blind man. 00:06:54.239 --> 00:06:55.899 A guy named Bartimaeus. 00:06:57.279 --> 00:07:01.120 Now we don't know, but somehow, Bartimaeus had heard about Jesus. 00:07:02.379 --> 00:07:08.659 He'd heard how Jesus had been curing people of all kinds of sicknesses and illnesses, even disabilities. 00:07:08.660 --> 00:07:16.040 And there he sat, Mark tells us, on the roadside, begging. 00:07:17.780 --> 00:07:25.460 I want to invite you right now just to close your eyes and imagine for a moment what it would be like to be blind. 00:07:27.600 --> 00:07:29.460 Unable to see the light of the sun. 00:07:31.460 --> 00:07:34.600 Unable to see the colors of things all around you. 00:07:34.600 --> 00:07:40.080 Unable to see the expressions on people's faces. 00:07:43.160 --> 00:07:47.000 Unable to judge just how far things are away from you. 00:07:49.160 --> 00:07:50.100 Everything's dark. 00:07:51.740 --> 00:07:56.100 You're totally dependent on sound and touch. 00:07:56.100 --> 00:08:01.960 Can you imagine having to go through your entire life like this? 00:08:04.700 --> 00:08:06.060 You can open your eyes now. 00:08:07.140 --> 00:08:10.260 We don't know the details of Bartimaeus' life. 00:08:11.600 --> 00:08:13.760 What put him to the streets to beg. 00:08:14.439 --> 00:08:19.340 But we do know that it was common for people in these days who had disabilities 00:08:19.339 --> 00:08:25.500 to be in poverty and to end up on the side of the road as beggars. 00:08:27.259 --> 00:08:31.479 Can you imagine that this is the way that you've found to put food in your stomach? 00:08:34.360 --> 00:08:38.600 Every day to get up and go to the gate of the city 00:08:38.600 --> 00:08:43.360 and call out to people for their spare change. 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:51.500 Imagine that you are Bart, sitting there in the darkness of your condition 00:08:51.500 --> 00:08:55.340 and all of a sudden you hear this commotion. 00:08:55.899 --> 00:08:57.019 You hear the sounds. 00:08:57.159 --> 00:08:57.940 You hear the voices. 00:08:58.899 --> 00:08:59.919 You hear the footsteps. 00:09:00.700 --> 00:09:03.440 The murmur of a huge crowd approaching 00:09:03.440 --> 00:09:05.779 and it's getting louder and louder. 00:09:06.800 --> 00:09:08.220 And you wonder, what is this? 00:09:08.279 --> 00:09:08.840 What's happening? 00:09:08.840 --> 00:09:15.700 Well, somebody made it known to Bart that it was Jesus of Nazareth going by. 00:09:17.160 --> 00:09:20.480 And immediately a spark is lit in Bartimaeus 00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:24.080 that probably caught everybody around him off guard. 00:09:25.060 --> 00:09:27.160 Bartimaeus begins to shout. 00:09:28.060 --> 00:09:30.080 He begins to cry out with a loud voice. 00:09:33.720 --> 00:09:37.420 Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. 00:09:38.840 --> 00:09:45.440 This is a good time to notice Mark's precise language. 00:09:46.200 --> 00:09:47.759 He began to shout. 00:09:49.780 --> 00:09:51.420 Not just that he shouted once, 00:09:51.540 --> 00:09:52.840 but he started to shout it 00:09:52.840 --> 00:09:56.620 and he continued to shout it repeatedly in this moment. 00:09:59.300 --> 00:10:01.920 And Bartimaeus must have been shouting it loudly 00:10:01.920 --> 00:10:03.379 and causing quite a commotion 00:10:03.379 --> 00:10:05.740 because as Mark tells us in verse 48, 00:10:05.740 --> 00:10:10.080 many rebuked him and told him to be quiet. 00:10:11.899 --> 00:10:14.840 Apparently, Bartimaeus was getting on people's nerves. 00:10:16.840 --> 00:10:18.460 He was dominating the moment. 00:10:18.639 --> 00:10:22.120 He was distracting people from what they wanted to be focused on. 00:10:22.180 --> 00:10:25.360 They wanted to be focused on Jesus now moving through the streets, 00:10:25.779 --> 00:10:27.080 walking through their city gates. 00:10:27.080 --> 00:10:31.740 But then this guy here, he's making too much noise. 00:10:32.879 --> 00:10:36.020 And notice who is rebuking Bartimaeus. 00:10:36.540 --> 00:10:39.180 It says many were rebuking him 00:10:39.180 --> 00:10:41.180 and telling him to be quiet. 00:10:41.300 --> 00:10:44.000 So just imagine for a moment that you are Bartimaeus. 00:10:44.200 00:15:46.399 --> 00:15:47.739 served as signs. 00:15:49.039 --> 00:15:49.879 They were confirmation 00:15:49.879 --> 00:15:50.799 from God 00:15:50.799 --> 00:15:52.159 that he really was 00:15:52.159 --> 00:15:53.939 who he said he was, 00:15:53.940 --> 00:15:55.600 that he really was 00:15:55.600 --> 00:15:57.180 the one God had chosen. 00:15:57.660 --> 00:15:58.800 And so the miracles
