00:05:04.140 --> 00:05:05.920 It's a trampling Christ underfoot. 00:05:06.040 --> 00:05:08.640 It is a profaning of his blood. 00:05:09.100 --> 00:05:11.439 It is an outrage to the Holy Spirit. 00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:20.600 The interpreter who is with Christian points to that and says, 00:05:21.660 --> 00:05:27.920 let the meaning of this be an everlasting caution to the pilgrims. 00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:31.420 And what Christian responds is this. 00:05:32.060 --> 00:05:37.819 Upon seeing this, Christian says, well, this is fearful. 00:05:39.500 --> 00:05:43.080 And he cries out to help to God to be watchful and sober. 00:05:43.480 --> 00:05:49.480 And then he turns to the interpreter and says, sir, is it not time for me to go on my way? 00:05:49.480 --> 00:05:52.580 He heeds the warning. 00:05:52.580 --> 00:05:57.439 And then presses on to the celestial city. 00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:04.420 Brothers and sisters, this morning we have the third warning of the book of Hebrews. 00:06:04.420 --> 00:06:09.900 We must heed the warning to dullness. 00:06:11.100 --> 00:06:16.340 And earnestly hold fast to Christ all the way to the end. 00:06:16.860 --> 00:06:18.960 And this passage unfolds in four ways. 00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:21.080 There is a rebuking of the dull. 00:06:22.020 --> 00:06:23.800 There is an exhorting of the dull. 00:06:23.980 --> 00:06:26.220 There is a warning of the dull. 00:06:26.220 --> 00:06:29.820 And then finally, there is this encouraging of the dull. 00:06:29.940 --> 00:06:34.520 This passage is a warning to the spiritually dull among us. because you've become dull of hearing. 00:07:17.039 --> 00:07:17.599 Dull. 00:07:18.519 --> 00:07:19.219 Verse 11. 00:07:19.220 --> 00:07:24.600 And then if you look at chapter 6, verse 12, we read, so that you may not be sluggish. 00:07:26.440 --> 00:07:30.100 Sluggish and dull in 5.11, it's the same Greek word. 00:07:31.340 --> 00:07:34.480 This whole passage is framed in dullness. 00:07:36.980 mature, they're teachers of the oracles of God. 00:09:28.360 --> 00:09:29.620 They've got a handle on it. 00:09:29.779 --> 00:09:31.959 They know what God's word says about certain things. pains here to help you understand the context of which this warning falls. 00:22:02.059 --> 00:22:14.099 The writer of the book of Hebrews is writing verses 4 through 6 in the midst of addressing spiritual dullness in the church. 00:22:14.099 --> 00:22:24.119 It's a way of calling for people to go on to maturity. 00:22:27.659 --> 00:22:34.679 Spiritual dullness is those Christians who are professing to be Christians, but they're not evidently growing. 00:22:36.319 --> 00:22:41.279 And what the concern is, is that that could be symptomatic of early onset apostasy. 00:22:41.980 --> 00:22:43.859 If you're not growing, why not? 00:22:44.099 --> 00:22:48.759 Is it because you're not laying hold of the means of grace? 00:22:49.000 --> 00:22:51.500 Or is it because you've not been born of God? 00:22:53.740 --> 00:22:57.539 And so he is writing this particular warning, and it is stark. 00:23:00.159 --> 00:23:03.119 Because there's this kind of like spiritual gray zone. 00:23:07.219 --> 00:23:10.639 When someone, apostasy again, is like when someone professes Christ. 00:23:10.640 --> 00:23:15.960 And they may even have some pretty profound experiences. 00:23:17.600 warnings in the book of Hebrews. 00:24:24.299 --> 00:24:26.419 How do we make sense of these things? 00:24:26.420 --> 00:24:37.920 Well, think of these warnings as a means of God's grace for genuine So let's dive into this little passage. 00:25:08.539 --> 00:25:11.779 The first thing I want you to notice in verse 4 is the word case. 00:25:11.779 --> 00:25:16.560 For it is impossible in the case situation, a case scenario, to address something to his audience. 00:25:38.240 --> 00:25:40.440 Notice the people he's calling beloved. 00:25:40.440 --> 00:25:45.740 The people he's calling beloved, who is confident of better things, things regarding salvation. 00:25:46.140 --> 00:25:50.259 He's not saying that this church has fallen away. 00:25:50.259 --> 00:25:52.960 He believes that they're actually saved. 00:25:52.960 --> 00:25:57.819 But he's warning them with this case of those who've fallen away. 00:26:00.819 --> 00:26:04.660 Notice five descriptions of those who have fallen away. 00:26:14.319 Have shared in the Holy Spirit. 00:26:14.420 --> 00:26:16.319 Have tasted the goodness of the word of God. 00:26:16.420 --> 00:26:18.599 And the powers of the age to come. 00:26:18.659 --> 00:26:19.319 And then fall away. 00:26:19.440 --> 00:26:20.839 What is going on here? 00:26:20.879 --> 00:26:23.379 Because that sounds like a Christian. 00:26:25.539 --> 00:26:28.519 Once --> 00:26:53.379 They have tasted of the powers of the age to come. 00:26:53.720 --> 00:26:58.120 They've been affected by the promise of a heavenly. 00:26:58.920 --> 00:27:00.320 A new earth. 00:27:00.820 --> 00:27:01.920 A new heavens. 00:27:02.120 --> 00:27:02.860 A new Jerusalem. 00:27:04.260 --> 00:27:05.540 It sounds like they're Christians. 00:27:05.860 --> 00:27:06.340 But you know what? 00:27:06.480 --> 00:27:07.260 I don't think they are. 00:27:07.380 --> 00:27:07.840 Do you know why? 00:27:07.980 --> 00:27:08.840 I've got three reasons. 00:27:08.940 --> 00:27:09.380 Can I 00:27:21.640 It's the parable of the sower. 00:27:23.380 --> 00:27:27.620 The sower is sowing seed and he casts the seed wide. 00:27:28.220 --> 00:27:30.000 And some of that seed falls on a path. 00:27:30.280 --> 00:27:33.720 Some of that seed falls on rocky soil. 00:27:34.060 --> 00:27:36.640 Another of that seed falls among thorns. 00:27:36.900 --> 00:27:40.080 And then the final group of seed, it falls among good soil. 00:27:40.380 --> 00:27:42.580 So there's four different soils talked about. 00:27:42.900 --> 00:27:45.380 But there's only two different kinds of people there. 00:27:45.380 --> 00:27:53.640 And the people, you know it's two different kinds of people based upon their fruitfulness. 00:27:53.640 --> 00:28:01.700 The seed that falls on the hard ground, birds come and pluck up, bears no fruit. 00:28:02.200 --> 00:28:08.940 The seed that falls upon the rocky soil, it shoots up fast and then the heat of day dries it up and it withers. 00:28:09.220 --> 00:28:09.820 No fruit. 00:28:10.200 --> 00:28:17.040 And then the seed that falls among the thorns, it starts to grow up but gets choked out by the thorns. 00:28:17.039 --> 00:28:17.940 It bears no fruit. 00:28:19.339 --> 00:28:20.480 These are not Christians. 00:28:22.759 --> 00:28:23.399 No. 00:28:25.599 --> 00:28:35.859 The real Christian is the good soil in which the word of God falls and it people who have responses of like soil two and three. 00:28:52.339 --> 00:28:53.719 They'll hear the word of God. 00:28:53.959 --> 00:28:55.619 They'll shoot up but they won't last. 00:28:55.879 --> 00:29:01.059 They'll hear the word of God but then they'll get choked out because their real treasure gets exposed. 00:29:02.959 --> 00:29:04.079 So there's the parable. 00:29:04.079 --> 00:29:06.539 That's the first reason why. 00:29:07.679 --> 00:29:13.159 I don't think these people who are having these experiences in Hebrews chapter 6 are actually genuine Christians. 00:29:13.359 --> 00:29:15.919 The second reason why is precedent. 00:29:18.159 --> 00:29:24.619 In Hebrews chapter 3, the writer does this exposition of Psalm 95. 00:29:24.779 --> 00:29:25.199 Remember that? 00:29:27.359 --> 00:29:29.779 And he's pointing back to the wilderness generation. 00:29:29.779 --> 00:29:32.980 And he keeps on saying today if you harden your voice. 00:29:33.379 --> 00:29:34.920 If you harden your heart. 00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:36.279 If you hear his voice and harden your heart. 00:29:36.639 --> 00:29:37.920 You will not enter my rest. 00:29:37.920 --> 00:29:47.320 That generation is an example of a people who were experiencing the power and the presence of God. 00:29:48.380 --> 00:29:50.060 Yet they didn't enter God's rest. 00:29:50.059 --> 00:29:59.000 It's an example right from Hebrews of a people who've had experiences yet their unbelief caught up with them. 00:29:59.379 --> 00:30:00.440 And they were not allowed in. 00:30:01.519 --> 00:30:07.259 That tells me that these people who've had these experiences in 4 and 5, they're not genuine believers. 00:30:07.259 --> 00:30:10.339 But the third reason. 00:30:12.799 --> 00:30:13.240 Blasphemy. 00:30:16.180 --> 00:30:20.500 That little phrase, fall away, in verse 6, and then have fallen away. 00:30:20.559 --> 00:30:24.099 You can read that and you're like, well, man, that doesn't sound so bad. 00:30:25.119 --> 00:30:27.019 It sounds like something happened to those people. 00:30:27.279 --> 00:30:28.400 Not that they did something. 00:30:28.400 --> 00:30:32.000 But then you start reading the rest of Hebrews. 00:30:32.120 --> 00:30:36.780 And you start understanding what the rest of Hebrews has to say about these people who've fallen away. 00:30:37.680 --> 00:30:39.420 That they're the ones who've hardened their hearts. 00:30:41.259 --> 00:30:43.720 Turn in your Hebrews to chapter 10. 00:30:44.740 --> 00:30:45.960 It's another warning passage. 00:30:47.640 --> 00:30:52.400 Of these people who have fallen away, the writer says this in verse 26. 00:30:52.400 --> 00:30:58.720 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins. 00:30:58.800 --> 00:30:59.680 Look down at verse 29. 00:31:00.180 --> 00:31:06.360 How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God? 00:31:07.380 --> 00:31:09.500 And has profaned the blood of the covenant. 00:31:09.820 --> 00:31:10.340 His blood. 00:31:11.220 --> 00:31:12.660 By which he was 12, verse 25. 00:31:23.840 --> 00:31:26.279 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. 00:31:26.900 --> 00:31:35.460 For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. 00:31:35.500 --> 00:31:36.100 And who's that? 00:31:36.380 --> 00:31:36.980 That's Jesus. 00:31:37.980 --> 00:31:39.519 Exalted at the right hand of God. 00:31:40.840 --> 00:31:41.580 So check it out. 00:31:43.820 --> 00:31:46.660 These people who are having an experience of the Holy Spirit. 00:31:47.120 --> 00:31:48.360 They share 00:32:06.680 --> 00:32:10.720 And that's why it's impossible to restore them to repentance. 00:32:10.720 --> 00:32:21.539 They are so hardened that they have removed themselves from the reach of God's grace. 00:32:21.539 --> 00:32:24.099 That's how far this has gone. 00:32:25.159 --> 00:32:30.240 So these people who have fallen away, this isn't some kind of temporary questioning of your king. Jesus talks about the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. 00:32:45.400 --> 00:32:53.079 It's not attributing the truth to Jesus of what the Holy Spirit witnesses to. 00:32:53.079 --> 00:32:59.119 And so that's why they are crucifying him again. 00:32:59.119 --> 00:33:04.019 These people who reject Christ, who hold him to public shame. 00:33:04.099 --> 00:33:04.839 Do you know what this means? 00:33:05.639 --> 00:33:07.139 They have become, they're his enemies. 00:33:07.140 --> 00:33:14.180 They're saying, yeah, you know, the Romans and the Jews, when they, those people who crucified him because they rejected him. 00:33:14.300 --> 00:33:15.940 That's who you're lining up with. 00:33:16.000 --> 00:33:17.340 That's who they're lining up with. 00:33:19.020 --> 00:33:20.740 They're holding him in contempt. 00:33:20.940 --> 00:33:23.660 They're saying, you are not the son of God. 00:33:24.140 --> 00:33:27.500 You are not the high priest in the order of Melchizedek. 00:33:27.600 based upon these reasons and the solid food of the Bible, that a genuine Christian can never fall away from Christ. 00:33:54.180 --> 00:33:55.840 But this is a real warning. 00:33:58.000 --> Because today I'm hearing your voice. I'm not going to harden my heart. I'm going to press 00:37:48.620 --> 00:37:55.940 on. It's time to get on our way. Let this motivate you. It's a means of grace to that end. 00:37:55.940 --> 00:38:06.900 And now we move from warning to encouragement. In verses 9 through 12, this passage doesn't 00:38:06.900 --> 00:38:10.220 wrap up with a word of warning. It wraps up with a word of encouragement. 00:38:11.900 --> 00:38:17.980 In verse 9, though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things. 00:38:17.980 --> 00:38:25.039 He moves from this case situation of apostasy back to the church. And he says, in your case, 00:38:25.460 --> 00:38:29.559 hey, we're confident of better things, things of salvation. And now we have to ask, well, 00:38:29.639 --> 00:38:40.400 what is he basing that on? What is he seeing? Verse 10, for God is not unjust so as to overlook 00:38:40.400 --> 00:38:52.680 your work. He bases this on God's fairness. God is not unjust. He's fair. He's just. But what is God 00:38:52.680 --> 00:39:01.300 seeing? For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his 00:39:01.300 --> 00:39:08.820 name and serving the saints as you still do. Now there's the fruit. It's not experiences. 00:39:10.400 --> 00:39:21.619 It's love. It's love. Love for the saints and serving them. That's the cardinal virtue of a 00:39:21.619 --> 00:39:29.340 Christian. That is the first things where God shows up. He changes a person's life and he totally flips 00:39:29.340 --> 00:39:36.780 them. And instead of living for themselves, they start to live for God and others. This is fruit of 00:39:36.780 --> 00:39:44.820 repentance. This is fruit of conversion. And so the author, having warned them of apostasy, 00:39:45.000 --> 00:39:49.640 now encourages them with a vote of confidence and says, hey, God sees what you're doing, 00:39:50.480 --> 00:39:58.080 both past and future serving, past and present serving. So he encourages them 00:39:58.079 --> 00:40:08.880 to be Christ-like because Jesus in his love for his father came not to be served, but to serve and to 00:40:08.880 --> 00:40:21.039 give his life as a ransom for many. In verses 11 and 12, I'll wrap this up. He spurs them on with one 00:40:21.039 --> 00:40:27.719 more thing. See the word earnestness. And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness, 00:40:27.920 --> 00:40:32.900 to have the full assurance of hope until the end so that you may not be sluggish. Do you know what the 00:40:32.900 --> 00:40:39.400 opposite of being dull is? Being earnest. And throughout the New Testament, that's translated 00:40:39.400 --> 00:40:49.480 into a few different words. Words like eager, words like zealous. In 2 Peter 1.5, it's make every effort. 00:40:52.920 --> 00:41:03.160 And we are to hold fast earnestly our hope all the way to the end. And I'm going to preach on that 00:41:03.159 --> 00:41:11.759 hope next week. You can see it. Verse 19, we have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, 00:41:11.879 --> 00:41:17.019 a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our 00:41:17.019 --> 00:41:26.739 behalf. He is our hope. And so we saddle up next to people and imitate them, verse 12, who by faith and 00:41:26.739 --> 00:41:33.099 patience are themselves holding fast to Jesus all the way to the end. And we earnestly saddle 00:41:33.099 --> 00:41:40.559 up next to them and hold fast to our hope as well, all the way to the end. Heed the warning. 00:41:43.420 --> 00:41:49.860 Earnestly hold fast to your hope. This passage is about spiritual dullness, 00:41:51.159 --> 00:41:58.360 a chronic immaturity that can be symptomatic of early onset apostasy.
