00:07:25.839 And God caused a famine in that land. 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:34.859 And with that background, we met Elimelech and his wife Naomi, their two sons, Malon and Chilion. 00:07:35.639 --> 00:07:45.099 And Elimelech decides to take his family out of Bethlehem, their hometown, to a foreign land, a neighboring land called Moab, to try to find food. 00:07:45.100 --> 00:07:50.460 But Moab was a place of paganism. 00:07:51.020 --> 00:07:53.540 And Moab was an enemy of Israel. 00:07:53.700 --> 00:07:55.439 It was a hostile place. 00:07:55.439 --> 00:08:00.040 And there in Moab, tragedy strikes. 00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:03.980 We don't know why or how, but suddenly Elimelech dies. 00:08:05.399 --> 00:08:10.579 And then Naomi's two sons, they marry a foreign Moabite woman, two locals. 00:08:11.379 --> 00:08:15.240 But after 10 years, Naomi's sons both die as well. 00:08:15.240 --> 00:08:18.379 So Naomi loses everything. 00:08:19.600 --> 00:08:22.019 But God provided a glimmer of time. 00:09:15.139 --> 00:09:20.299 And so today, as we dive into this chapter, chapter 2, we will see how God displayed, 00:09:21.439 --> 00:09:25.679 we'll see how Ruth's great faith led her into to stick with me. 00:09:57.139 --> 00:10:00.139 So chapter 2 starts off with an introduction to Boaz. 00:10:00.359 --> 00:10:05.899 We learn that he is a worthy man, a relative of Naomi's deceased husband, Elimelech. 00:10:07.379 --> 00:10:12.039 Naomi, meanwhile, she's returned to Bethlehem with Ruth by her side. 00:10:12.039 --> 00:10:20.120 And one day, Ruth decides to go glean in the fields because, well, she and Naomi had no food. 00:10:20.459 --> 00:10:21.139 They were hungry. 00:10:21.259 --> 00:10:22.099 They needed to eat. 00:10:23.139 --> 00:10:29.639 Now, in God's law, God instructed farmers not to farm to the edge of the field. 00:10:29.959 --> 00:10:30.699 Leave that aside. 00:10:30.700 --> 00:10:37.100 And also, if grain fell to the ground during harvesting, not to pick up those grains. 00:10:37.500 --> 00:10:38.580 Leave them there. 00:10:39.080 --> 00:10:45.000 Those were for people that could not care for themselves, that did not own land. 00:10:46.200 --> towards people because God's heart is always to show kindness to people through his people. 00:11:06.379 --> 00:11:11.220 But this was a time in Israel where everyone did what was right in his own eyes. 00:11:12.679 --> 00:11:14.840 Crime was rampant in Israel. 00:11:14.840 --> 00:11:23.180 And as a Moabite foreigner and as a woman and a widow, Ruth was a prime target for abuse in those fields. 00:11:23.840 --> 00:11:27.759 And so, it was dangerous for her to go into the fields. 00:11:28.100 --> 00:11:32.120 And in her own words, she needed to find favor from a landowner. 00:11:32.399 --> Amazingly, we read that she, Ruth, happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech. 00:11:49.899 --> 00:11:52.479 And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem. 00:11:53.379 --> 00:12:00.399 I love this phrase that she happened to come to Boaz's field as if it was just totally random chance. 00:12:00.479 --> 00:12:10.379 That of all the fields she could have stumbled upon in Bethlehem or outside Bethlehem, she happened to stumble upon Boaz's fields. 00:12:11.179 --> 00:12:15.519 And exactly at the time when Boaz returned from the city. 00:12:16.639 --> 00:12:17.500 What are the odds? 00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:32.659 As we walk through Ruth chapter 2 and throughout this book, we'll see that there isn't even one instance of God speaking or causing things to happen in a very tangible or obvious way. 00:12:32.659 --> 00:12:41.480 God didn't speak audibly to Naomi, to Ruth, or to Boaz like he did in other parts of the Old Testament, to Abraham or to Moses. 00:12:42.120 --> 00:12:45.600 There weren't any obvious miracles or a burning bush. 00:12:46.360 --> 00:12:52.899 And yet, God was very much still at work, guiding the steps of Ruth. 00:12:52.899 --> 00:13:01.159 Of all the bodily fields outside Bethlehem, God led Ruth right to Boaz's field at the exact time that he showed up. 00:13:02.379 --> 00:13:05.500 Now, of course, Ruth wasn't passive. 00:13:06.199 --> 00:13:10.279 As we discussed last week, Ruth is someone with incredible faith. 00:13:10.639 --> 00:13:21.319 And her faith led her to action, to go into the fields in spite of the risks and danger, to honor the promise that she made to her mother-in-law, Naomi. 00:13:21.320 --> 00:13:23.879 But Ruth was never alone. 00:13:24.680 --> 00:13:30.680 God was there, directing her steps, guiding her way, and leading her right to Boaz. 00:13:33.020 --> 00:13:34.860 Proverbs 16, 9. 00:13:35.440 --> 00:13:36.640 I love this verse. 00:13:37.720 --> 00:13:39.200 In many ways, it's a verse that I live by. 00:13:39.760 --> 00:13:44.400 The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. 00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:54.340 It is wonderful when God does speak to us in a clear, audible voice, through a word of knowledge or through a dream or a vision. 00:13:54.480 --> 00:13:55.620 And he does do that. 00:13:56.079 --> 00:13:59.379 But oftentimes, God doesn't speak to us that clearly. 00:13:59.379 --> 00:14:13.480 And yet, his spirit is at work in the ordinary day-to-day parts of life, directing our steps, guiding our words, opening doors, and closing doors. 00:14:13.480 --> 00:14:22.200 Our challenge, perhaps, is that maybe we don't really believe that God cares about the small day-to-day things. 00:14:22.779 --> 00:14:24.120 Big things, yes. 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:30.560 When a family member is very sick or we lose our job, we'll ask for prayer. 00:14:31.139 --> 00:14:37.360 But in the small things, in the day-to-day, we don't think God really has time for that. 00:14:37.420 --> 00:14:39.820 He's too busy doing other things. 00:14:40.220 --> 00:14:42.240 That is not true at all. 00:14:42.240 --> 00:14:48.539 In Ruth, we see that God in his kindness cares about even the mundane small things of life. 00:14:49.639 --> 00:15:03.039 And like Ruth, our role is to press on, to be faithful, to trust God, to love like Ruth loved Naomi, which oftentimes means taking action. 00:15:03.340 --> 00:15:06.600 Because real faith always leads to action. 00:15:06.600 --> 00:15:15.220 But the beautiful part is that even when we step out in faith and honor God and love people, we're never alone. 00:15:16.220 --> 00:15:21.899 Our God is always there, behind the scenes, intervening on our behalf. 00:15:22.580 --> 00:15:28.139 If we stop and reflect, we will see his providential kindness to us. 00:15:28.139 --> 00:15:33.960 And sometimes God brings people into our lives to show us his kindness. 00:15:34.600 --> 00:15:37.100 For Naomi, that was Ruth. 00:15:37.860 --> 00:15:41.699 And for Ruth, that person was Boaz. 00:15:41.700 --> 00:15:45.860 Going back to verse 1 of this chapter. 00:15:46.920 --> 00:15:52.740 Now, Naomi had a relative of her husband's, a worthy man of the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz. 00:15:53.620 --> 00:15:57.680 So he's a relative of Naomi's deceased husband from the same clan. 00:15:57.679 --> 00:16:04.079 In Israel, there were 12 tribes of Israel, the sons of Jacob. 00:16:05.019 --> 00:16:07.139 And then below that, there were the clans. 00:16:07.239 --> 00:16:08.559 And below that were the families. 00:16:08.899 --> 00:16:12.539 So Elimelech and Boaz were from the same clan. 00:16:14.239 --> 00:16:19.319 And verse 1 tells us that he is a worthy man or a man of standing. 00:16:20.139 --> 00:16:23.059 He was a landowner, so Boaz was a wealthy man. 00:16:23.059 --> 00:16:28.959 But if you look at the Hebrew translation of a worthy man, it's not just that he was wealthy. 00:16:29.419 --> 00:16:34.039 He also was a man who had character and integrity. 00:16:34.779 --> 00:16:37.899 He was a man that loved and feared God. 00:16:38.979 --> 00:16:43.119 And it was through Boaz that God showed remarkable kindness to Ruth. 00:16:43.739 --> 00:16:48.199 In verse 5, Boaz notices her in the barley fields. 00:16:48.200 --> 00:16:56.440 And when he realizes who she is, this Moabite widow and the daughter-in-law of Naomi, he showers her with kindness. 00:16:57.420 --> 00:16:59.640 And we see that in three main ways. 00:17:01.180 --> 00:17:06.240 First, as we discussed, Ruth needed protection. 00:17:06.500 --> 00:17:07.440 He protects Ruth. 00:17:08.340 --> 00:17:13.600 As we discussed, Ruth needed someone to protect her as she gathered food for herself and Naomi. 00:17:13.599 --> 00:17:20.359 And Boaz offered that protection, not just for one day, but for the entire harvest season. 00:17:22.419 --> 00:17:26.599 And second, Boaz accepted Ruth. 00:17:27.659 --> 00:17:31.519 Boaz didn't just tell Ruth, hey, come and glean in my fields. 00:17:31.719 --> 00:17:33.259 My people will take care of you. 00:17:33.480 --> 00:17:35.699 And I'm going to take a hike and go play midday meal. 00:17:43.599 --> 00:17:46.319 Maybe you invite people into your home. 00:17:46.500 --> 00:17:55.279 When you invite someone to dine with you at your table, you project a sense of belonging and acceptance and inclusion. 00:17:56.459 --> 00:18:02.799 I would imagine Boaz would often dine with other landowners, people perhaps of the same class as him. 00:18:02.980 --> 00:18:06.779 Or maybe with customers he would want to sell his grain to. 00:18:06.779 --> 00:18:14.539 But he invites Ruth, a Moabite foreign widow, into his home, into his table to dine with him. 00:18:15.819 --> 00:18:22.559 And third, abundant sustenance, which is just a fancy way of saying he gave her a lot more food. 00:18:22.559 --> 00:18:28.500 As we just saw at the midday meal, Ruth ate at the boss's table. 00:18:29.619 --> 00:18:34.279 Verse 14 tells us that she ate all she wanted and had some left over. 00:18:34.279 --> 00:18:48.559 But then, on top of that, after the meal in verses 15 and 16, Boaz tells his men to pull some stalks of barley from the bundles and leave them on the ground for Ruth to pick up. 00:18:49.240 --> 00:18:55.599 It doesn't just allow Ruth to glean in the sort of traditional sense according to the letter of the law. 00:18:56.440 --> 00:19:01.299 Boaz works behind the scenes to give her abundantly more than she expected. 00:19:01.299 --> 00:19:16.819 And at the end of that first day, in verse 17, we read that Ruth gleaned about an epa of barley, which is roughly 10 to 15 times more than one person's portion for one day. 00:19:18.079 --> 00:19:20.740 And God didn't just bless Ruth for one day. 00:19:21.539 --> 00:19:27.799 Through Boaz's favor and protection, she was able to safely glean for an entire season. 00:19:27.799 -->
