We've probably gone to a number of Christmas parties. 00:00:18.559 --> 00:00:24.839 I woke up this morning to text from three different guys of just explaining some hard things that 00:00:24.839 --> 00:00:32.200 happened at Christmas gatherings. And so whether we're coming this morning with joy, with excitement 00:00:32.200 --> 00:00:40.539 of what this season is, what it means, or whether we're coming with just feelings of difficulty and 00:00:40.539 --> 00:00:46.700 tough things going on, I just hope in this time and I pray in this time that we're able to give 00:00:46.700 --> 00:00:52.340 some good focus to God's Word and to the Spirit working in our hearts this morning. So if y'all 00:00:52.340 --> 00:00:57.480 will, go ahead and turn with me to John chapter 15. John chapter 15. 00:01:05.100 --> 00:01:08.740 We're going to look at a number of texts this morning, but this one will be the main one we 00:01:08.740 --> 00:01:15.000 start with and the main one we end with. We're just going to look at a couple of verses here 00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:25.040 to begin with, and those are verses 12 and 13. Verses 12 and 13 of John chapter 15. Let's go ahead 00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:31.879 and read it. This is my commandment that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has 00:01:31.879 --> 00:01:38.460 no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. So that's our text this morning, a very 00:01:38.459 --> 00:01:45.439 short one, but an incredibly weighty one. Now let me give you a little bit of the context here, and 00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:51.659 then we'll read that text one more time with that context in mind. So here Jesus has been speaking a 00:01:51.659 --> 00:01:57.439 lot of rather intense words to his disciples. This section of scripture, looking back a couple 00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:03.679 chapters up till here, is often called the farewell disclosure. Jesus is speaking important words to his 00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:10.260 disciples. Now that he's been fully rejected by the Jews, his crucifixion is coming soon. And so he 00:02:10.260 --> 00:02:15.080 seems to be wanting to give full attention to them right now and build them up for what is coming soon. 00:02:15.560 --> 00:02:22.659 His death, his resurrection, his ascension. Back in chapter 13, we have Jesus washing his disciples' feet 00:02:22.659 --> 00:02:28.860 and then stating that one of them there would eventually betray him. And then we have one of those very 00:02:28.860 --> 00:02:35.560 strong claims that he makes that he is the way, the truth, and the life, that no one can truly come to 00:02:35.560 --> 00:02:42.860 the Father except through him. And then midway through chapter 14, Jesus begins making it so, so clear 00:02:42.860 --> 00:02:49.520 that he is soon to be going to the Father. Look at John 14 just for a moment. Let's look at verses 15 00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:54.260 through 21. It says there, 00:02:54.340 --> 00:02:59.280 If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper 00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:04.460 to be with you forever. Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither 00:03:04.460 --> 00:03:11.360 sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as 00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:16.680 orphans. I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. 00:03:16.680 --> 00:03:24.379 Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 00:03:25.200 --> 00:03:31.200 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, 00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:34.439 and I will love him and manifest myself to him. 00:03:35.500 --> 00:03:42.100 I read all that this morning to show that this is a very changing time for the disciples. The Lord is explaining 00:03:42.099 --> 00:03:46.099 so much to them that he will soon no longer be with them 00:03:46.099 --> 00:03:49.560 physically, but the Spirit will come and dwell in them. 00:03:50.639 --> 00:03:55.219 And so then moving into chapter 15, where our verses that we just read a minute ago are, 00:03:55.859 --> 00:03:59.659 we see the comparison of Christ being the vine and we the branches. 00:03:59.659 --> 00:04:04.219 The branches either bear fruit, those are the true believers, or they don't bear fruit, 00:04:04.319 --> 00:04:07.479 they're cast aside, they're not real believers at all. 00:04:07.479 --> 00:04:13.399 And then the Lord hones in on what the best representation of truly bearing fruit is. 00:04:14.659 --> 00:04:16.800 That's our text this morning, verse 12 and 13 again. 00:04:16.939 --> 00:04:21.019 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 00:04:21.680 --> 00:04:26.639 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 00:04:27.420 --> 00:04:31.000 So the Lord's commandment to his disciples here is that they would love one another, 00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:37.439 but not just love one another, but love as he has loved them and as he has loved us. 00:04:38.540 --> 00:04:41.579 And then the Lord explains that love, that greater love has no one than this, 00:04:41.660 --> 00:04:43.500 that someone lay down his life for his friends. 00:04:44.259 --> 00:04:46.220 This is the love that we are called to give. 00:04:46.680 --> 00:04:52.180 And I'm hoping all of us at this point are beginning to realize how intense that is. 00:04:53.579 --> 00:04:55.660 But we see that command throughout all of Scripture. 00:04:55.839 --> 00:04:59.160 You might be thinking of all kinds of texts that sound super similar to that one. 00:04:59.160 --> 00:05:05.300 Even a couple chapters earlier in the same section, in chapter 13, verses 34 and 35, 00:05:06.180 --> 00:05:06.700 Jesus says, 00:05:06.820 --> 00:05:09.460 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. 00:05:09.660 --> 00:05:12.540 Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 00:05:12.860 --> 00:05:18.100 By this, all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:25.140 Notice that emphasis there as well, that we will be known by our love for one another. 00:05:25.139 --> 00:05:32.939 And so with all that in mind, I want us to note now that the Lord simply is just calling us to show love 00:05:32.939 --> 00:05:38.680 in a really intense form of love, the same that he has shown to us. 00:05:39.800 --> 00:05:44.979 So this morning I want to talk about that love, and then I want to talk about how we can express that love. 00:06:15.079 --> 00:06:21.939 Now, I don't intend this sermon at all to be exhaustive on any of these points. 00:06:22.159 --> 00:06:27.399 As I wrote it, I ended up thinking of more and more and more and more scriptures that we could pull from. 00:06:27.479 --> 00:06:31.240 And I think we'll all feel a little bit by the end that we've been all over the New Testament. 00:06:33.139 --> 00:06:39.299 I think it's impossible to unpack all of those and see all of the Lord's love for us. 00:06:39.300 --> 00:06:44.180 It's the hymn that I grew up singing this hymn a lot called The Love of God, where it says, 00:06:44.259 --> 00:06:47.960 The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell. 00:06:48.900 --> 00:06:49.780 And another verse that says, 00:06:49.879 --> 00:06:53.520 Could we with ink the ocean fill and were the skies of parchment made? 00:06:53.939 --> 00:06:57.879 Were every stock on earth a quill and every man a scribe by trade? 00:06:58.319 --> 00:07:01.160 To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry, 00:07:01.620 --> 00:07:05.400 nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky. 00:07:05.399 --> 00:07:07.139 I think that rings so true. 00:07:07.379 --> 00:07:12.259 We cannot fully comprehend, we cannot fully explain the love of God, 00:07:12.419 --> 00:07:14.579 but let's savor it a little bit this morning. 00:07:14.779 --> 00:07:20.159 Let's jump in a little bit and let's go ahead and start with the Advent love expressed in Christ's birth. 00:07:21.139 --> 00:07:23.939 I think initially, and I think rightfully so, 00:07:24.359 --> 00:07:28.599 we tend to think of God's love most as expressed in the cross. 00:07:29.219 --> 00:07:32.019 I think that's a good thing, that that's what we think of first. 00:07:32.019 --> 00:07:36.759 Even by our text this morning, we know that that is the greatest love that can be shown, 00:07:36.859 --> 00:07:39.500 that someone give up their life for their friends. 00:07:40.039 --> 00:07:46.740 But I think it's going to be helpful this morning for us to think about all of those aspects of the Lord's incarnation 00:07:46.740 --> 00:07:50.159 and how they show his love, especially since at Christmas time, 00:07:50.500 --> 00:07:54.799 what we particularly tend to focus on is the coming of Christ as a baby. 00:07:55.819 --> 00:07:57.139 Now let's think about the birth for a moment. 00:07:57.139 --> 00:08:00.779 I think we immediately are drawn to think of animals, 00:08:01.180 --> 00:08:04.259 to think of shepherds, to think of wise men, 00:08:04.519 --> 00:08:06.680 think of people coming to visit, bringing gifts. 00:08:07.399 --> 00:08:10.919 Even as Jesus being laid in a manger because there was not room for them, 00:08:11.719 --> 00:08:15.620 in the end that Jesus' parents were truly staying in an area that was meant for animals 00:08:15.620 --> 00:08:18.979 because there was no other space because everyone had come to be taxed. 00:08:19.019 --> 00:08:21.959 And I think that all is good, that our minds are drawn there. 00:08:21.959 --> 00:08:26.639 We do truly see the love of God in Jesus' humble birth. 00:08:26.839 00:08:43.860 Let me read those lyrics to you. 00:08:43.860 --> 00:08:48.419 Joy has dawned upon the world, promised from creation. 00:08:49.080 --> 00:08:52.659 God's salvation now unfurled, hope for first 11 verses here. 00:10:54.240 --> 00:10:54.440 It says, 00:10:54.440 --> 00:11:02.139 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 00:11:02.680 --> 00:11:08.139 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 00:11:08.540 --> 00:11:14.480 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 00:11:15.220 --> 00:11:19.519 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the important for us to think about the love that he showed throughout his life. 00:13:58.879 --> 00:14:05.300 Firstly, let's think about what it really meant to be walking into this world becoming fully ago, I guess, 00:14:15.259 --> 00:14:19.159 this hit me pretty hard in Hebrews 4, verses 14 through 16, where it said, 00:14:19.680 --> 00:14:24.680 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God. 00:14:25.040 --> 00:14:26.680 Let us hold fast our confession. 00:14:27.259 --> 00:14:30.840 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, 00:14:31.200 --> 00:14:36.040 but one who is in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 00:14:36.039 --> 00:14:40.079 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, 00:14:40.179 --> 00:14:44.659 that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 00:14:45.740 --> 00:14:47.159 Our Lord understands. 00:14:48.179 -->
