00:00:26.359 --> 00:00:28.879 it might be worth just taking stock very quickly. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:36.420 John and Graham have explained very clearly to us that 1 John is a book that was written into a particular situation. 00:00:37.320 --> 00:00:41.539 There are people who had gotten to the church who said, we have superior knowledge, 00:00:42.120 --> 00:00:48.039 we are more spiritual than everybody else, we have no sin, we put all that behind us, 00:00:48.379 --> 00:00:51.079 and we are really just a bit better than everybody. 00:00:51.079 --> 00:00:53.879 And they cause a lot of trouble, eventually it appears they had left, 00:00:54.140 --> 00:00:57.359 but not without causing a great deal of disruption in the church, 00:00:57.359 --> 00:01:01.780 and perhaps unsettling church members that may be thinking, well, have we really got the truth? 00:01:02.019 --> 00:01:03.479 Are we really Christians? 00:01:03.560 --> 00:01:08.920 And John is writing to assure people that the test of Christianity, of Christian faith, 00:01:09.120 --> 00:01:13.159 is that we believe in the Lord Jesus and that we are obedient to him, 00:01:13.539 --> 00:01:19.340 and it's not all about having knowledge, it's much more about having love for one another. 00:01:19.340 --> 00:01:25.659 Now that continues to be a large part of the theme of the remaining chapters in the book, 00:01:25.900 --> 00:01:28.219 but as I said, I think there is a bit of a change. 00:01:28.840 --> 00:01:34.320 In the last two and a half chapters, John is not so much thinking about the people who have come into the church 00:01:34.320 --> 00:01:38.159 and the damage they've done, he's thinking about the people who are still there, 00:01:38.159 --> 00:01:43.920 and how they should deal with one another as brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus. 00:01:44.040 --> 00:01:46.600 When we read the passage in a few minutes, you may notice again and again, 00:01:46.599 --> 00:01:48.879 John talks about the brothers. 00:01:49.939 --> 00:01:52.459 I think particularly in the second half of the book as well, 00:01:52.719 --> 00:01:57.079 we can see the close link between John's first letter and John's gospel. 00:01:57.199 --> 00:02:00.819 Now see it throughout the book, right at the start of the book he talks about in the beginning, 00:02:01.219 --> 00:02:03.399 as he talks about in his gospel. 00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:05.899 But from the middle of chapter 3 onwards, 00:02:05.899 --> 00:02:10.919 there's a very close parallel between what John writes to his readers of his letter, 00:02:10.919 --> 00:02:17.459 and particularly the teaching of the Lord Jesus in the upper room to his disciples in John's gospel. 00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:23.560 Now when you read John's gospel, there is a very clear message in it. 00:02:24.279 --> 00:02:28.419 The message of John's gospel is believe and live, 00:02:28.799 --> 00:02:31.759 or maybe more accurately believe and have life. 00:02:32.479 --> 00:02:34.699 He explains at the end of his book in chapter 20, 00:02:34.699 --> 00:02:40.159 These things are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, 00:02:40.419 --> 00:02:44.619 and that by believing, you may have life in his name. 00:02:45.159 --> 00:02:49.000 If we take the most famous verse in John's gospel, chapter 3 and verse 16, 00:02:49.060 --> 00:02:49.359 it says, 00:02:49.459 --> 00:02:53.560 Whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 00:02:53.579 --> 00:02:57.319 We go through lots and lots of verses in John's gospel that bring us this theme, 00:02:57.319 --> 00:03:04.699 if you believe in Jesus, then you will have life, life not of yourself, but life given to you by God. 00:03:05.159 --> 00:03:10.479 And that's very much also in John's letter, and we'll see that as we read our passage this morning. 00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:14.500 But John's letter has a slightly different emphasis at points. 00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:19.599 So not just believe and live, he says know and love. 00:03:20.579 --> 00:03:26.120 In John's first epistle, the word know is used 42 times, mostly in chapters 2 and 3, 00:03:26.120 --> 00:03:31.960 and the word love is used 45 times, mostly in chapters 3 and 4. 00:03:32.620 --> 00:03:36.159 So he's saying once you've believed in the Lord Jesus and have life through him, 00:03:36.580 --> 00:03:40.960 you will love and you will then have assurance you will know that you belong to him. 00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:42.180 And that's the sequence, I think. 00:03:42.719 --> 00:03:47.000 You believe in Jesus, that is the only way to have salvation through him. 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:50.040 You believe that he lived, that he died for you, that he rose again, 00:03:50.319 --> 00:03:53.340 surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. 00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:18.540 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers. 00:05:19.540 --> 00:05:22.800 Anyone who does 00:06:59.319 --> 00:07:03.319 and he received an MBE in June for his services to medicine. 00:07:04.099 --> 00:07:07.500 He was involved with Alexander Fleming in the development of penicillin. 00:07:08.159 --> 00:07:10.719 He was one of the first people to promote the pollen count 00:07:10.719 --> 00:07:13.860 as being a good warning for hay fever sufferers 00:07:13.860 --> 00:07:15.659 that they needed to get their pills out. 00:07:16.259 --> 00:07:17.860 He also developed a theory 00:07:17.860 --> 00:07:21.519 that people are subject much more to allergies these days 00:07:21.519 --> 00:07:23.279 because we're too keen on hygiene, 00:07:23.279 --> 00:07:27.159 and we don't build up enough resistance to infection. 00:07:27.160 --> 00:07:29.680 He was a leading doctor. you as the memories of the war have got a little bit more distant? 00:08:53.559 --> 00:08:54.500 And he said, no. 00:08:54.860 --> 00:08:57.579 When I was a child, I said to my brother, I hate you. 00:08:57.860 --> 00:09:01.000 And my father pulled me up, and he taught me never to hate. 00:09:01.480 --> 00:09:04.779 You only harm yourself if you hate. 00:09:04.919 --> 00:09:08.179 I looked on the internet and came across a longer quote from him. 00:09:08.939 --> 00:09:11.240 He said, you must not go on hating people. 00:09:11.240 --> 00:09:15.860 It does you harm, but it does not do them any harm. 00:09:16.560 --> 00:09:21.399 Also, I am a Christian who was taught to love, not hate. 00:09:21.960 --> 00:09:24.419 That's how I live my life. 00:09:25.180 --> 00:09:30.620 And that's very much the message of the first part of the passage we're looking at this afternoon. 00:09:31.139 --> 00:09:35.379 That the responsibility of the Christian and the sign of life in the Christian 00:09:35.379 --> 00:09:39.679 is that we love others, that we don't hate them. 00:09:40.580 --> 00:09:43.139 And John uses two examples to illustrate that. 00:09:43.220 --> 00:09:47.820 The example of Cain, and then the example of the Lord Jesus. 00:09:49.100 --> 00:09:52.759 So first of all, we have the example of hate in action. 00:09:54.120 --> 00:09:56.980 Now, as he does quite a lot in his gospel and his epistle, 00:09:57.340 --> 00:09:59.399 John goes back to the beginning. 00:09:59.399 --> 00:10:04.860 Cain was right at the beginning the son of Adam and Eve. 00:10:05.720 --> 00:10:12.740 And John says, Cain gives us an example of just how bad it is to hate others. 00:10:13.319 --> 00:10:14.740 Now, remember the story of Cain and Abel. 00:10:14.959 --> 00:10:17.100 They both brought sacrifices to God. 00:10:17.720 --> 00:10:19.279 Cain brought sacrifice of fruit. 00:10:19.779 --> 00:10:21.899 Abel brought sacrifice of livestock. 00:10:22.139 --> 00:10:23.919 And God was pleased with Abel's sacrifice. 00:10:24.460 --> 00:10:26.319 He wasn't pleased with Cain's sacrifice. 00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:31.020 And Cain got really jealous and he killed his brother. 00:10:31.520 --> 00:10:33.080 That is the example of Cain. 00:10:33.920 --> 00:10:39.160 And John says, anyone who hates their brother or sister or hates others, 00:10:39.560 --> 00:10:41.060 they are like Cain. 00:10:41.660 --> 00:10:49.440 And in particular, Cain hated Abel because Cain had done something that wasn't so pleasing to God. 00:10:49.820 --> 00:10:51.600 Abel had done something that pleased God. 00:10:51.600 --> 00:10:58.680 And it was Abel's righteousness and Abel's superior spiritual sacrifice that really got to Cain 00:10:58.680 --> 00:11:03.340 and that made him hate and ultimately kill his brother. 00:11:04.820 --> 00:11:08.840 So in that case, good provoked evil. 00:11:08.980 --> 00:11:16.080 The good of Abel and Cain, looking at it, provoked Cain to hate him and to do what was wrong. 00:11:16.080 --> 00:11:21.200 And John says, it's like that in our world today. 00:11:21.960 --> 00:11:26.540 If we live lives of service for the Lord Jesus, 00:11:27.240 --> and to trust him. 00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:43.720 Many will reject us and perhaps will hate or despise us for what we do. 00:11:43.720 --> 00:11:47.500 And John says, don't be surprised when that happens. 00:11:47.960 --> 00:11:50.360 That's the work of the evil one in our world, 00:11:50.700 --> 00:11:56.700 getting into people's hearts and minds and turning them against what is good. 00:11:57.940 --> 00:12:02.940 And then John says, and he's echoing here the words of the Lord Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. 00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:07.160 He says, it's not just the action that counts. 00:12:07.279 --> 00:12:09.560 Cain went all the way and murdered his brother. 00:12:09.559 --> 00:12:13.039 But John says, it's not the actual action that's important. 00:12:13.619 --> 00:12:14.659 The thought counts. 00:12:14.779 --> 00:12:17.139 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer. 00:12:17.679 --> 00:12:22.639 And you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. 00:12:23.299 --> 00:12:25.059 That's terribly strong words, isn't it? 00:12:25.439 --> 00:12:30.399 That if we hate someone, it's almost as if we had physically murdered them. 00:12:30.459 --> 00:12:37.279 That is how serious it is when we hold these feelings of resentment and hate against others. 00:12:37.279 --> 00:12:43.779 And we might say, well, that's very true and very interesting, people say, no, I'm not going to get on with this person anymore. 00:13:07.179 --> 00:13:08.039 They avoid each other. 00:13:08.100 --> 00:13:09.759 There's as little as possible to do with each other. 00:13:10.159 --> 00:13:14.840 Sometimes it leads to churches being divided and being split. 00:13:15.939 --> 00:13:19.980 And John would say to us, have nothing to do with that. 00:13:20.539 --> 00:13:23.939 If you hate somebody, if you resent something about them, 00:13:24.299 --> 00:13:27.200 the person you harm most is yourself. 00:13:27.200 --> 00:13:31.400 You will do much more we were unlovely, 00:14:19.620 --> 00:14:20.660 when we were sinful, 00:14:20.960 --> 00:14:24.100 when we had nothing that would make him want to love us. 00:14:24.100 --> 00:14:28.580 Yet he did love us and he laid down his life for us. 00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:31.639 And that is the example that we are called to follow. 00:14:31.700 --> 00:14:32.899 As in so many things, 00:14:33.139 --> 00:14:34.820 our example as Christians, 00:14:34.940 --> 00:14:36.820 if we are believers in the Lord Jesus, 00:14:37.240 --> 00:14:40.800 is to look at what Jesus did and to imitate it 00:14:40.800 --> 00:14:53.500 The good of the Lord Jesus provokes good in us. 00:14:54.100 --> 00:14:56.259 As we see the outrageous love he had, 00:14:56.340 --> 00:14:58.740 which Paul presented so clearly to us last week, 00:14:58.740 --> 00:15:02.820 as we see the outrageous love of God and of the Lord Jesus for us, 00:15:03.360 --> 00:15:06.740 that should stir up in our hearts feelings of love for him, 00:15:07.100 --> 00:15:09.400 a desire to serve him and to live for him, 00:15:09.399 --> 00:15:13.179 and also to show the love that he had to others. 00:15:13.799 --> 00:15:15.159 As he has loved us, 00:15:15.480 --> 00:15:17.100 as he has set us an example, 00:15:17.659 --> 00:15:20.740 so we should imitate him and his good to us 00:15:20.740 --> 00:15:25.480 should be reflected in the good
