statement is about imputed righteousness. 00:07:55.520 --> 00:07:58.759 That is, it's possible this statement is about 00:07:58.759 --> 00:08:01.500 how the law's demand for righteousness 00:08:01.500 --> 00:08:03.500 is satisfied for us 00:08:03.500 --> 00:08:06.600 by the perfect righteousness of Christ 00:08:06.600 --> 00:08:08.860 being credited to our account. 00:08:09.520 --> 00:08:11.060 Now, that is wonderful. 00:08:11.060 --> 00:08:12.439 It's certainly true. 00:08:13.120 --> 00:08:15.319 And it's a cause of great assurance. 00:08:17.480 --> 00:08:21.920 But verse 4 is especially law 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:28.000 is fulfilled in us 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:33.639 is that the law's overall purpose of love 00:08:33.639 --> 00:08:37.200 comes to be expressed and fulfilled 00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:39.100 in the lives of Christians. 00:08:41.059 --> 00:08:43.399 How is it possible that people 00:08:43.399 --> 00:08:46.379 who have once been condemned by the law 00:08:46.379 --> 00:08:47.579 because of our sins 00:08:47.579 --> 00:08:52.039 might now fulfil the law through love? 00:08:52.879 --> 00:08:55.079 Isn't that claim hopelessly optimistic? Gentile 00:09:21.459 --> 00:09:23.119 for all alike are under sin, 00:09:23.419 --> 00:09:24.959 in the second half of verse 4, 00:09:26.159 --> 00:09:29.559 another great division in humanity is established. 00:09:29.559 --> 00:09:33.919 There are those who walk according to the flesh 00:09:33.919 --> 00:09:37.919 and there are those who walk according to the spirit. 00:09:39.559 --> 00:09:43.779 See, it turns out, in the Bible's view, 00:09:43.899 --> 00:09:45.799 there is a great division in humanity. 00:09:46.619 --> 00:09:49.299 But it's not the divide between Jew and Gentile. 00:09:49.379 --> 00:09:51.439 It's not the divide between slave and free. 00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:55.040 It's not between law and not law. 00:09:56.400 --> 00:10:00.300 The division is between flesh and spirit. 00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:04.700 And it's this division 00:10:04.700 --> 00:10:07.800 which explains how it is 00:10:07.800 --> 00:10:10.360 that the righteous requirement of the law 00:10:10.360 --> 00:10:13.540 might be fulfilled in believers. 00:10:14.400 --> 00:10:15.960 Verse 5 and 6. 00:10:15.960 --> 00:10:40.320 In these verses, flesh and spirit represent two opposing dominions, 00:10:40.320 --> 00:10:46.660 to realms, to powers, to spheres of influence, 00:10:47.360 --> 00:10:49.120 to opposing dominions, 00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:51.900 someone can walk according to the flesh 00:10:51.900 --> 00:10:54.340 and be according to the flesh 00:10:54.340 --> 00:10:58.000 or they can walk and be according to the spirit. 00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:03.100 Every one of us belongs to one or other of those dominions. 00:11:03.240 --> 00:11:05.560 We either belong to the flesh or we belong to the spirit. 00:11:06.940 --> 00:11:08.920 One or the other is the sphere --> 00:11:38.339 it's the greatest concentration of spirit language 00:11:38.340 --> 00:11:39.600 anywhere in the Bible. 00:11:41.180 --> 00:11:44.500 What we have here is a passage that is describing to us, 00:11:44.600 --> 00:11:47.460 teaching us about life in the spirit. 00:11:49.100 --> 00:11:51.200 And each dominion, flesh and spirit, 00:11:51.340 --> 00:11:52.540 has its own mindset. 00:11:53.240 --> 00:11:55.600 There is a mind set on the things of the flesh 00:11:55.600 --> 00:11:58.540 and there is the mind set on things of the spirit. 00:11:58.680 --> 00:12:01.080 And those
