just don't know the answer. 00:06:27.959 --> 00:06:33.959 And I was quite surprised that the minister didn't know the answer for the question. 00:06:33.959 --> 00:06:44.959 But there's times where we just don't know what the answer is. 00:06:44.959 --> 00:06:48.959 But that is also a really good thing to do in our lives. 00:06:48.959 --> 00:06:52.959 When we don't know to say we don't know. 00:06:52.959 --> 00:06:54.959 Quite often, we like to pretend that we know everything, 00:06:54.959 --> 00:06:57.959 and we've got all the answers to all the questions. 00:06:57.959 --> 00:07:01.959 But it's a really good thing to ask questions. 00:07:01.959 --> 00:07:06.959 It's a really good thing to say, well, we just don't know at times. 00:07:06.959 --> 00:07:12.959 And in your lesson today, you're going to see that you're going to have an old man 00:07:12.959 --> 00:07:14.959 and a young boy. 00:07:14.959 --> 00:07:16.959 A young boy is called Samuel. 00:07:16.959 --> 00:07:18.959 The old man is called Eli. 00:07:18.959 --> 00:07:24.959 And Eli asks Samuel a really important question. 00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:28.959 And it's almost the wrong way around, because Eli was a priest, 00:07:28.959 --> 00:07:31.959 and he knew and he studied about God. 00:07:31.959 --> 00:07:33.959 He should have known lots of things about God. 00:07:33.959 --> 00:07:39.959 But he came to Samuel and asked him, what did God say? 00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:44.959 Because God spoke to Samuel. 00:07:44.959 --> 00:07:50.959 And God can speak to us no matter what age we are. 00:07:50.959 --> 00:07:52.959 That we hear God's voice. 00:07:52.959 --> 00:07:55.959 And as we go next door to our classes, 00:07:55.959 --> 00:08:01.959 we all pray that we would hear God speaking to us. 00:08:01.959 --> 00:08:03.959 God speaks to the old. 00:08:03.959 --> 00:08:05.959 God speaks to the young. 00:08:05.959 --> 00:08:09.959 But this is one of the best questions we can ask in our lives. 00:08:09.959 --> 00:29:49.779 And it's a psalm that is suitable for the entirety of life. 00:29:49.779 --> 00:29:52.779 It's very suitable this morning to take this passage 00:29:52.779 --> 00:29:55.779 because it is a psalmist. 00:29:55.779 --> 00:29:58.779 It's a psalm where the psalmist looks back over life, 00:29:58.779 --> 00:30:05.779 and he is commending God as a suitable God for whatever age, 00:30:05.779 --> 00:30:11.779 whatever stage you are at, whatever stage I am at in our lives. 00:30:11.779 --> 00:30:15.779 That he can come to God and trust in God and lift his heart 00:30:15.779 --> 00:30:20.779 and praise to God for all that he has done for him. 00:30:20.779 --> 00:30:24.779 It's a very encouraging psalm. 00:30:24.779 --> 00:30:31.779 The words through it are encouraging for us to come constantly before our Lord. 00:30:31.779 --> 00:30:38.779 And it is honest reflections when he's going through the most difficult things of life. 00:30:38.779 --> 00:30:44.779 And in many ways, it's a jewel of a psalm, Psalm 71. 00:30:44.779 --> 00:30:48.779 Because of these words that are written so encouraging, so true, 00:30:48.779 --> 00:30:52.779 but when you consider the context in which it is written, 00:30:52.779 --> 00:30:56.779 where the psalmist feels like all his strength is spent, 00:30:56.779 --> 00:30:59.779 he is feeling particularly weak, particularly vulnerable, 00:30:59.779 --> 00:31:02.779 he is feeling absolutely empty, 00:31:03.779 --> 00:31:06.779 it kind of makes this psalm more precious. 00:31:06.779 --> 00:31:11.779 It is like a jewel, like a diamond in a hard place. 00:31:11.779 --> 00:31:16.779 The diamond that is formed in the darkest of circumstances. 00:31:16.779 --> 00:31:24.779 We have this jewel of a psalm that comes out of the experiences of his life. 00:31:24.779 --> 00:31:29.779 And for many of the psalms, that's what makes a psalm so special. 00:31:30.779 --> 00:31:33.779 Because it portrays truthful feelings, 00:31:33.779 --> 00:31:36.779 whether it's the good, the bad, or the ugly. 00:31:36.779 --> 00:31:42.779 And so when we are in these places, when we feel like that, 00:31:43.779 --> 00:31:46.779 when we feel like we're empty, 00:31:46.779 --> 00:31:49.779 when we feel like we have nothing left in the tank, 00:31:51.779 --> 00:31:54.779 we see that the psalmist who was so close to God, 00:31:55.779 --> 00:31:57.779 and who wrote such wonderful words about God, 00:31:58.779 --> 00:32:01.779 has the same experience in his life. 00:32:01.779 --> 00:32:06.779 So when we come to read it, it's a comforting reassurance for us, 00:32:07.779 --> 00:32:12.779 that our feelings are not just of ourselves. 00:32:13.779 --> 00:32:18.779 The psalmist echoes the same thing in what he writes. 00:32:19.779 --> 00:32:21.779 It makes them so precious to us, 00:32:22.779 --> 00:32:24.779 and so beautiful in our eyes, 00:32:24.779 --> 00:32:28.779 and these psalms are so suitable for our lives, 00:32:29.779 --> 00:32:30.779 whatever stage we are at. 00:32:31.779 --> 00:32:34.779 At one point we did emphasize, as we looked at this psalm, 00:32:35.779 --> 00:32:36.779 was the main point of it, 00:32:36.779 --> 00:32:38.779 which is usually found in the center of the psalm. 00:32:39.779 --> 00:32:41.779 And we see that in verse 14. 00:32:42.779 --> 00:32:45.779 The psalmist has his hope continually in his Lord, 00:32:46.779 --> 00:32:50.779 with a praise that is increasing more and more. 00:32:50.779 --> 00:32:52.779 He trusts in this Lord. 00:32:53.779 --> 00:32:55.779 Regardless of the situation he is in, 00:32:56.779 --> 00:32:59.779 he feels it so bleak, he feels himself so empty. 00:33:00.779 --> 00:33:02.779 But that's exactly what faith is. 00:33:03.779 --> 00:33:05.779 Regardless of what the circumstances are, 00:33:06.779 --> 00:33:11.779 he holds on to this hope that he has in his Lord and his God. 00:33:12.779 --> 00:33:15.779 His faith is a diamond. 00:33:15.779 --> 00:33:20.779 His faith is the jewel in the darkness. 00:33:21.779 --> 00:33:24.779 He is faithful in the darkness. 00:33:25.779 --> 00:33:30.779 And it is faith that God values at the end of the day. 00:33:31.779 --> 00:33:37.779 A faithful life pleasing to God will receive honor at death 00:33:38.779 --> 00:33:40.779 by entering into glory. 00:33:40.779 --> 00:33:44.779 Faith is of utmost value. 00:33:45.779 --> 00:33:46.779 So the psalmist here, 00:33:47.779 --> 00:33:49.779 he looks back in his life of faith. 00:33:50.779 --> 00:33:51.779 With old age approaching, 00:33:52.779 --> 00:33:54.779 feels so vulnerable, feels so weak. 00:33:55.779 --> 00:33:58.779 And he gives us his thoughts on life. 00:33:59.779 --> 00:34:02.779 And there's three things that come across to us 00:34:03.779 --> 00:34:04.779 in this passage from 17 down. 00:34:05.779 --> 00:34:07.779 He says that his God is a God for all ages. 00:34:07.779 --> 00:34:10.779 In verse 17 and 18. 00:34:10.779 --> 00:34:13.779 He says that his God is a God for all times. 00:34:14.779 --> 00:34:16.779 In verses 19 to 21. 00:34:17.779 --> 00:34:20.779 And he says thoroughly that his God is a God for all eternity. 00:34:21.779 --> 00:34:23.779 From verse 22 to 24. 00:34:24.779 --> 00:34:26.779 A God for all ages. 00:34:27.779 --> 00:34:28.779 A God for all time. 00:34:29.779 --> 00:34:31.779 A God for all eternity. 00:34:31.780 --> 00:34:37.780 And
