that we've been going through over the past number of weeks. 00:00:25.879 --> 00:00:34.619 So verse 17 mentions the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. 00:00:35.060 --> 00:00:40.399 We're just going to confine our thoughts tonight to the first of these, this helmet of salvation. 00:00:41.039 --> 00:00:44.820 We've been looking at the various parts of the armour as we've gone through them. 00:00:44.920 --> 00:00:50.539 We've noticed at times that there's a specific connection between some of them. 00:00:50.539 --> 00:01:01.379 And that's the case spiritually, of course, as well, even more so than it was in the case of the Roman soldier, who's used here as a picture or analogy of a spiritual armour. 00:01:01.780 --> 00:01:06.060 And we'll see that that's the same tonight as we come to the helmet of salvation. 00:01:06.719 --> 00:01:12.519 It has a specific connection with the word of God, with the gospel. 00:01:12.519 --> 00:01:22.319 Verse 15, shoes for your feet, having on the readiness given by the gospel of peace, but also what is mentioned, the belt of truth in verse 14. 00:01:23.099 --> 00:01:31.319 Because the belt of truth in many ways, as we saw it going round the waist of the Roman soldier and keeping things in place, 00:01:31.780 --> 00:01:40.879 it's always the case that spiritually we come back to the belt of truth because it's foundational to our progress and to our security. 00:01:40.879 --> 00:01:52.719 So as we look at verse 17 tonight, obviously, it has to do with the helmet of the Roman soldier, which protected the head, one of the most important parts of the body. 00:01:53.679 --> 00:02:03.019 Obviously, if the head was damaged, then the whole person was really out of action and would not be able to carry out their duties as required. 00:02:03.019 --> 00:02:07.359 So let's look at this helmet in the spiritual sense of it. 00:02:07.979 --> 00:02:10.840 And first of all, try and work out what exactly it means. 00:02:11.019 --> 00:02:14.319 It's called the helmet of salvation. 00:02:14.780 --> 00:02:17.180 Is it salvation in its entirety? 00:02:17.800 --> 00:02:20.340 What does the word salvation actually indicate there? 00:02:20.780 --> 00:02:26.400 And I think there's a clue to this in the passage we read in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:29.199 and especially the words of verse 8 there. 00:02:29.199 --> 00:02:41.359 You recall as we read through that, since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. 00:02:41.799 --> 00:02:45.259 So it's narrowing it down there to the hope of salvation. 00:02:45.959 --> 00:02:49.079 In other words, it's not salvation in the broadest sense. 00:02:49.539 --> 00:02:52.939 It's salvation in a more narrow, specific sense. 00:02:52.939 --> 00:03:03.759 And I think we can take that into chapter 6 of Ephesians as well, because the Thessalonian passage gives us an insight into the working of Paul's mind in regard to this. 00:03:04.460 --> 00:03:11.340 Now, the context, as you recall, in Thessalonians is one of Paul encouraging them to encourage one another. 00:03:11.979 --> 00:03:14.259 They were looking forward to the coming of Christ. 00:03:14.259 --> 00:03:23.699 Some actually were a bit concerned or even confused about how that would be in terms of in relation to those who had passed on from this life. 00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:31.060 And you recall in chapter 4 that he deals with that specific problem, that the Lord will come with the sound of the trumpet of God. 00:03:31.180 --> 00:03:32.799 The dead in Christ will rise first. 00:03:32.959 --> 00:03:38.799 We then who are alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the air to meet the Lord in the air. 00:03:38.799 --> 00:03:40.699 We will always be with the Lord. 00:03:40.819 --> 00:03:43.299 Therefore, encourage one another with these words. 00:03:43.300 --> 00:03:50.540 And then in chapter 5, as we read, verse 11, therefore, encourage one another and build one another up just as you are doing. 00:03:50.939 --> 00:03:56.660 So it's very much to do with the context or the purpose of Paul of encouraging these Thessalonians, 00:03:57.240 --> 00:04:01.540 encouraging this young church as they wrestled with theological problems, 00:04:01.540 --> 00:04:07.780 but also like the Ephesians as they wrestled against spiritual darkness and against decline, 00:04:07.780 --> 00:04:11.400 even amongst some of the people who had come to follow the Lord. 00:04:11.400 --> 00:04:19.639 And the context of encouraging one another there in 1 Thessalonians is set in the context of Christ's return, 00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:27.699 set in the context of looking forward in hope to the arrival of the Lord Jesus Christ as promised by himself 00:04:27.699 --> 00:04:33.680 and by the teachings of God's word when he left this world to return to glory. 00:04:33.680 --> 00:04:38.980 So salvation in this context really has that narrower focus. 00:04:39.740 --> 00:04:41.959 And indeed, you'll find that in other contexts as well. 00:04:41.959 --> 00:04:52.199 1 Peter, for example, begins his epistle by reflecting on how the resurrection of Jesus Christ brought them all to a living hope. 00:04:52.859 --> 00:04:57.079 God had done this by the resurrection of Christ to a living hope. 00:04:57.519 --> 00:05:03.399 To you who are called, he said, you who are kept by the power of God through faith 00:05:03.399 --> 00:05:08.579 unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 00:05:09.019 --> 00:05:13.179 Now he's talking there of, Peter is talking there of salvation ready to be revealed. 00:05:13.879 --> 00:05:17.219 And he knows very well that salvation has already been revealed. 00:05:17.219 --> 00:05:24.939 So he's talking again more narrowly, more focused on salvation in the sense of what is going to appear at the coming of Christ. 00:05:24.939 --> 00:05:32.620 What is going to be made known then, that is not necessarily as clear now, but certainly hasn't yet been realized, 00:05:32.759 --> 00:05:35.899 hasn't been 00:06:13.180 The Christian looking forward in hope is itself an antidote to discouragement, 00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:17.540 an antidote, as we saw there in 1 Thessalonians 5, 00:06:17.540 --> 00:06:24.700 to the discouragement that is so easily comes and drifts into our lives. 00:06:25.860 --> 00:06:32.300 So if you think about the helmet in the ordinary sense, in the natural sense of protecting the head, 00:06:32.760 --> 00:06:38.520 I think we can say that spiritually the helmet is there to protect the mind. 00:06:38.519 --> 00:06:44.519 The mind, as it works through the issues that God has revealed, comes to certain conclusions. 00:06:45.240 --> 00:06:48.339 God has given us the spirit of a sound mind. 00:06:48.680 --> 00:06:49.740 He's opened our mind. 00:06:49.839 --> 00:06:55.180 He's given us the kind of mind that wants to learn more and more of the truth of God, 00:06:55.740 --> 00:06:57.560 learn more from the word of God. 00:06:57.939 --> 00:07:04.019 And as that is the case, so it is something which nourishes your hope as you look towards the future, 00:07:04.019 --> 00:07:04.979 among other things. 00:07:05.279 --> 00:07:09.659 Of course, it does more than that, but we're focusing on the hope of salvation 00:07:09.659 --> 00:07:15.060 as it's represented by this helmet, this helmet of the Roman soldier. 00:07:15.659 --> 00:07:20.939 And the Christian mind, as it thinks ahead, is a mind that is able to think clearly 00:07:20.939 --> 00:07:25.759 because you have the benefit of God's word clearly stating 00:07:25.759 --> 00:07:29.339 that the things that are hoped for are already secure. 00:07:29.339 --> 00:07:35.199 They're not things that are waiting to be worked through and brought to realization or accomplishment. 00:07:35.699 --> 00:07:40.659 The fact that Jesus has gone to glory and is at the right hand of God the Father, 00:07:40.899 --> 00:07:43.679 the fact that he has accomplished redemption on earth, 00:07:43.859 --> 00:07:46.459 the fact that the spirit of God has come as promised, 00:07:47.019 --> 00:07:52.779 and that Christ the Son and the Father are present through that spirit in the hearts of God's people, 00:07:53.219 --> 00:07:56.959 that itself is something that is already the case. 00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:03.539 And the word of God brings it to us so often that that has already been accomplished. 00:08:04.019 --> 00:08:08.639 So hope in this sense, as you put on the helmet of hope, 00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:12.560 as you exercise hope every day in Christ, 00:08:12.740 --> 00:08:16.120 you're not dealing with something that's uncertain, 00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:19.879 something that is still somehow unclear. 00:08:19.879 --> 00:08:25.259 Sometimes we use the word hope, of course, and we mentioned this more than once. 00:08:25.579 --> 00:08:29.000 We use the word hope in the ordinary, everyday sense of hope, 00:08:29.319 --> 00:08:33.700 like hoping for the best or hoping something certainties on which your hope is based, 00:09:00.220 --> 00:09:01.379 on which your hope rests. 00:09:02.379 --> 00:09:04.259 Because you're not here tonight as Christians, 00:09:05.059 --> 00:09:07.399 exercising the mind that God has given you, 00:09:07.399 --> 00:09:11.559 and somehow doubtful about things that are foundational for your hope. 00:09:12.340 --> 00:09:13.799 Christ has died. 00:09:14.019 --> 00:09:15.959 Christ has risen from the dead. 00:09:16.360 --> 00:09:17.879 Christ is at the right hand of glory. 00:09:18.579 --> 00:09:21.600 And all the way through the scripture, especially Paul's epistles, 00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:24.459 you'll find him referring to these great facts, 00:09:24.759 --> 00:09:29.000 facts accomplished already as the very ground of our hopes, 00:09:29.860 --> 00:09:31.919 the very ground of the Christian hope, 00:09:32.579 --> 00:09:34.860 that salvation that's certain, 00:09:34.860 --> 00:09:38.320 that God has said is already accomplished, 00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:40.379 that will remain to be, 00:09:40.600 --> 00:09:43.940 that remains to be finally crowned at the appearance of Christ. 00:09:44.360 --> 00:09:45.320 Well, what he's saying is, 00:09:45.560 --> 00:09:47.800 in order to face the issues of the day, 00:09:47.840 --> 00:09:50.039 and especially to face the enemy, 00:09:50.200 --> 00:09:53.500 to face the spiritual darkness that we all wrestle against, 00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:55.759 as we saw at the beginning of this passage, 00:09:56.240 --> 00:09:59.300 take the helmet of salvation, 00:09:59.460 --> 00:10:01.440 take the hope of salvation, 00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:07.180 take that hope that penetrates forward into the future, 00:10:07.740 --> 00:10:09.200 not as an unknown future, 00:10:09.860 --> 00:10:12.220 though there are many events in the course of life 00:10:12.220 --> 00:10:13.700 that will remain unknown. 00:10:14.700 --> 00:10:16.220 But these are not unknowns. 00:10:16.540 --> 00:10:18.260 These are the actual verities, 00:10:18.500 --> 00:10:19.120 the truths, 00:10:19.500 --> 00:10:22.520 the certainties of what God has already done, 00:10:23.080 --> 00:10:25.400 and of what God in his word has promised, 00:10:25.400 --> 00:10:26.800 will yet be fulfilled. 00:10:26.799 --> 00:10:31.199 So that's something about the spiritual helmet. 00:10:31.620 --> 00:10:32.639 We're focusing it down, 00:10:32.759 --> 00:10:34.679 following 1 Thessalonians 5, 00:10:34.779 --> 00:10:36.500 to the hope of salvation, 00:10:36.839 --> 00:10:39.839 to the final stage of salvation, 00:10:39.839 --> 00:10:41.659 with the coming of Christ. 00:10:42.419 --> 00:10:44.099 And Paul is there, 00:10:44.179 --> 00:10:45.500 and also here in Ephesians, 00:10:46.059 --> 00:10:48.679 drawing the minds of the Ephesians 00:10:48.679 --> 00:10:50.639 to that particular issue. 00:10:50.639 --> 00:11:00.039 So that it's looking forward to projecting into the future. 00:11:01.299 --> 00:11:04.419 So which temptation especially is addressed 00:11:04.419 --> 00:11:09.480 by this particular emphasis on the hope of salvation 00:11:09.480 --> 00:11:11.340 or the helmet of salvation? 00:11:11.840 --> 00:11:12.740 Well, the second point, 00:11:13.019 --> 00:11:14.740 and we looked at the spiritual helmet briefly, 00:11:14.740 --> 00:11:17.980 is to look at how we need to keep up the fight, 00:11:17.980 --> 00:11:20.420 to keep up our resistance, 00:11:20.800 --> 00:11:23.820 and indeed our attack of the enemy as well, 00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:28.340 whatever forms we find the enemy actually coming to assault us. 00:11:29.080 --> 00:11:31.399 And the particular temptation, 00:11:31.580 --> 00:11:33.940 I think, that's in mind here 00:11:33.940 --> 00:11:37.220 for the use of the helmet of salvation 00:11:37.220 --> 00:11:38.340 or the hope of salvation, 00:11:38.580 --> 00:11:41.519 is the temptation to lose heart. 00:11:42.600 --> 00:11:44.639 The temptation to recede, 00:11:44.740 --> 00:11:45.960 the temptation to go back, 00:11:45.960 --> 00:11:49.000 the temptation just to, if not almost give up, 00:11:49.060 --> 00:11:51.540 then certainly progress 00:12:47.860 they've made of faith in Christ. 00:12:48.500 --> 00:12:49.240 And then he says, 00:12:49.459 --> 00:12:51.019 it was through 11, 00:12:51.099 --> 00:12:52.059 as you know, chapter 11, 00:12:52.139 --> 00:12:53.659 that great cloud of witnesses, 00:12:53.839 --> 00:12:54.500 as he calls it, 00:12:54.899 --> 00:12:56.360 in verse 1 of chapter 12, 00:12:56.360 --> 00:12:58.120 let us when that takes place 00:14:55.160 --> 00:14:56.920 and that aspect of salvation 00:14:56.919 --> 00:14:59.519 is then actually realized 00:14:59.519 --> 00:15:00.659 and fulfilled, 00:15:01.139 --> --> 00:15:17.039 to actually not give up. 00:15:17.139 --> 00:15:17.439 Remember, 00:15:17.819 --> 00:15:19.719 all the way through Hebrews, 00:15:20.279 --> 00:15:21.919 you've got references to Israel, 00:15:22.559 --> 00:15:23.959 references to the Old Testament 00:15:23.960 --> 00:15:25.780 and Israel in the progress 00:15:25.780 --> 00:15:26.519 that they made through 00:15:26.519 --> 00:15:27.259 the Old Testament 00:15:27.259 --> 00:15:27.980 in the desert. 00:15:28.540 --> 00:15:29.780 And so often in Hebrews, 00:15:29.940 --> 00:15:30.860 they are an example 00:15:30.860 -->
