WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.040 Here's a man who, maybe without entirely knowing it, is lost. 00:00:06.660 --> 00:00:08.519 And Jesus seeks him out and saves him. 00:00:09.140 --> 00:00:12.939 But before we get too much into this, I want to zoom out just a little bit 00:00:12.939 --> 00:00:14.800 because the context is also important. 00:00:15.839 --> 00:00:18.679 This story comes directly after chapter 18. 00:00:19.240 --> 00:00:25.179 At the end of chapter 18, you'll see there's a story there about Jesus coming into Jerusalem. 00:00:25.179 --> 00:00:31.079 And while he's still on the outside of the town, a blind beggar calls out to him and says, 00:00:31.679 --> 00:00:33.880 Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. 00:00:34.359 --> 00:00:36.039 That's in 18, verse 38. 00:00:36.939 --> 00:00:39.899 And Jesus calls him over and he has mercy on him. 00:00:40.100 --> 00:00:40.840 He heals him. 00:00:42.260 --> 00:00:46.320 And Luke shows us with that story that Jesus really is the Son of David, 00:00:46.500 --> 00:00:51.980 the promised Messiah, the Savior who would come to bring the mercy of God to his people. 00:00:51.979 --> 00:01:01.699 And that includes blind beggars, but also blind sinners who desperately need a Savior. 00:01:01.839 --> 00:01:09.159 And that second part is what we get a clearer picture of in this account of Jesus and Zacchaeus. 00:01:09.859 --> 00:01:14.120 Zacchaeus was an outwardly very successful man, 00:01:14.219 --> 00:01:17.560 very different from the blind beggar outside of the walls. 00:01:17.560 --> 00:01:22.840 And yet both of these men were blind in their own ways. 00:01:23.719 --> 00:01:29.540 Zacchaeus was totally blind to God, blind to the ways that his sin was destroying him and others. 00:01:30.780 --> 00:01:32.740 So this man outside the city was blind. 00:01:32.840 --> 00:01:35.599 The man inside the city was blind too in a different way. 00:01:35.740 --> 00:01:38.020 Both of them are unable to save themselves. 00:01:38.500 --> 00:01:42.460 Both of them are completely transformed when they meet Jesus. 00:01:42.800 --> 00:01:44.460 Because verse 10 really is true. 00:01:44.459 --> 00:01:47.759 The Son of Man came to seek and save the lost. 00:01:49.119 --> 00:01:56.479 Maybe I think we're just maybe too familiar with the story of Zacchaeus to really see and feel the shock of it. 00:01:56.539 --> 00:02:00.299 But this conversation plays out in some really unexpected ways. 00:02:01.139 --> 00:02:04.699 Ways that would have been very surprising to the people at the time. 00:02:05.199 --> 00:02:08.439 And I think it's a good reminder to us if we pay attention. 00:02:08.439 --> 00:02:15.479 Because I think it's easy for us to say that Jesus came to bring God's salvation to everyone. 00:02:16.120 --> 00:02:17.840 We believe that. We acknowledge that. 00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:23.460 But when we say salvation is available to everyone and anyone who comes, 00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:28.240 I wonder do we always really think about the implications of what that means. 00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:33.080 Because in this story, although most people would have, you know, 00:02:33.140 --> 00:02:36.120 they wouldn't have argued with the idea that Zacchaeus was lost. 00:02:37.159 --> 00:02:38.700 Everyone would have known that. 00:02:39.560 --> 00:02:44.879 But it's also very clear that they weren't actually happy about Jesus seeking this man. 00:02:46.640 --> 00:02:48.480 But Jesus does seek him anyway. 00:02:49.439 --> 00:02:50.660 So let's think about this. 00:02:50.719 --> 00:02:53.219 First we'll look at this man Zacchaeus. 00:02:53.260 --> 00:02:53.820 Who is he? 00:02:53.819 --> 00:02:57.759 And then how does Jesus interact with him? 00:02:57.840 --> 00:02:59.780 What the result of that interaction is? 00:03:00.239 --> 00:03:01.819 And what it all means for us today. 00:03:02.139 --> 00:03:02.979 So that's where we're headed. 00:03:03.599 --> 00:03:04.560 Who is this man? 00:03:05.079 --> 00:03:06.219 Who is Zacchaeus? 00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:10.400 These verses tell us that Zacchaeus is a very different kind of man 00:03:10.400 --> 00:03:15.219 from the blind beggar who was outside of the walls of Jericho. 00:03:17.979 --> 00:03:20.740 This is a wealthy, powerful citizen. 00:03:21.400 --> 00:03:22.599 He's a tax collector. 00:03:22.599 --> 00:03:24.139 Well, he's not just a tax collector. 00:03:24.259 --> 00:03:26.000 He's the chief tax collector. 00:03:26.859 --> 00:03:31.439 And it's clear that he'd used this high position to gain a fortune for himself. 00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:32.319 He's quite wealthy. 00:03:33.139 --> 00:03:34.859 And also very unpopular. 00:03:36.039 --> 00:03:38.120 He has a reputation as a sinner. 00:03:38.259 --> 00:03:39.340 We see that in verse 7. 00:03:39.599 --> 00:03:40.579 And why is that? 00:03:41.400 --> 00:03:44.579 Well, we see a glimpse of why people might feel this way 00:03:44.579 --> 00:03:47.219 later in the text in verse 8 00:03:47.219 --> 00:03:48.219 when he says, 00:03:48.560 --> 00:03:50.419 If I have cheated anybody out of anything. 00:03:50.620 --> 00:03:52.620 Well, he had. 00:03:53.580 --> 00:03:55.020 He had cheated people. 00:03:55.139 --> 00:03:56.379 Probably a lot of people. 00:03:57.659 --> 00:03:59.960 In fact, it's possible almost everyone in town 00:03:59.960 --> 00:04:02.219 had been cheated by this man in some way. 00:04:02.219 --> 00:04:08.379 He had the power to pay himself out of the taxes that he collected from the residents. 00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:10.319 He had the authority to do that. 00:04:10.639 --> 00:04:15.560 And the way that he had that authority was from the government of Rome, 00:04:15.699 --> 00:04:17.540 which was the conquering government, 00:04:17.939 --> 00:04:19.759 the oppressive government, 00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:23.000 who had been so bad to the Jewish people. 00:04:23.100 --> 00:04:24.560 One of the ways that they were oppressive 00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:26.540 was through their high taxes. 00:04:28.939 --> 00:04:30.579 Taxes that he was enforcing. 00:04:31.100 --> 00:04:33.040 And so this man was working for the Romans 00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:34.620 to collect these taxes. 00:04:35.220 --> 00:04:35.899 And more than that, 00:04:35.980 --> 00:04:39.019 he was making himself wealthy with the extra that he took 00:04:39.019 --> 00:04:40.519 from them, 00:04:40.819 --> 00:04:42.699 using the authority of their oppressors. 00:04:43.819 --> 00:04:45.259 And he's a Jewish man, 00:04:46.259 --> 00:04:47.800 supposed to be one of them, 00:04:47.840 --> 00:04:49.220 and yet he does this for the enemy. 00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:52.620 I mean, it had to feel like a betrayal. 00:04:52.620 --> 00:04:54.600 It's no wonder they call him a sinner. 00:04:55.819 --> 00:04:57.840 It's no wonder they mutter and they grumble 00:04:57.840 --> 00:05:00.100 when Jesus is kind to this man. 00:05:01.340 --> 00:05:05.120 This is the guy in town who not only works for the enemy, 00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:07.139 but abuses his power, 00:05:07.259 --> 00:05:12.139 makes himself rich off the backs of his own neighbors, 00:05:12.579 --> 00:05:13.459 his own community, 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:15.480 his own flesh and blood. 00:05:17.220 --> 00:05:18.939 I mean, of course people don't like him. 00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:19.639 Who would? 00:05:22.620 --> 00:05:24.540 But look how the story goes. 00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:27.920 We see who Zacchaeus is. 00:05:27.959 --> 00:05:28.980 It's not a nice portrait. 00:05:30.439 --> 00:05:31.939 But let's consider what happens, 00:05:32.019 --> 00:05:33.620 how Jesus interacts with this man. 00:05:34.060 --> 00:05:36.019 Luke tells us Zacchaeus is a short man. 00:05:36.439 --> 00:05:38.300 And he tells us that because he wants us to know 00:05:38.300 --> 00:05:39.860 why he's climbing in a tree 00:05:39.860 --> 00:05:41.199 to get a look at Jesus. 00:05:41.680 --> 00:05:44.000 Well, it's not normal to see the rich guy in town 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:44.879 climbing up a tree. 00:05:44.879 --> 00:05:48.420 I think that detail gives us a hint 00:05:48.420 --> 00:05:50.240 that this man is drawn to Jesus. 00:05:50.500 --> 00:05:53.159 He's open, he's interested on some level. 00:05:54.379 --> 00:05:56.139 And he doesn't just get a look at Jesus 00:05:56.139 --> 00:05:58.139 like that's what he's after. 00:05:59.319 --> 00:06:00.980 But he gets a lot more than that 00:06:00.980 --> 00:06:02.579 because Jesus actually stops 00:06:02.579 --> 00:06:05.620 and he does something completely says this right there 00:06:13.319 --> 00:06:14.319 in front of the whole crowd, 00:06:14.439 --> 00:06:15.099 in front of everybody. 00:06:15.319 --> 00:06:16.360 What just happened? 00:06:17.560 --> 00:06:19.360 I mean, Jesus, don't you understand 00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:20.779 who this man is? 00:06:21.599 --> 00:06:22.759 He's not on our side. 00:06:22.860 --> 00:06:24.139 He's working for the enemy. 00:06:25.719 --> 00:06:27.519 He's working against God's people. 00:06:27.639 --> 00:06:29.300 He's working against the public good. 00:06:29.579 --> 00:06:32.039 He's only thinking of himself 00:06:37.659 --> 00:06:39.079 by eating with him, 00:06:39.159 --> 00:06:40.319 spending the day with him, 00:06:40.319 --> 00:06:42.980 when there's so many other homes in Jericho 00:06:42.980 --> 00:06:45.599 that I'm sure would have gladly hosted Jesus. 00:06:46.659 --> 00:06:48.879 And they probably would have been much more worthy. 00:06:49.959 --> 00:06:52.779 I'm sure there were great citizens in Jericho at the time 00:06:52.779 --> 00:06:54.319 who really did work hard 00:06:54.319 --> 00:06:55.579 to look after the poor, 00:06:55.659 --> 00:06:56.659 to build up their community, 00:06:56.819 --> 00:06:57.779 to do good things. 00:06:57.959 --> 00:06:59.579 And why on earth doesn't Jesus 00:06:59.579 --> 00:07:01.199 honor one of them 00:07:01.199 --> 00:07:02.779 with his limited time 00:07:02.779 --> 00:07:04.019 going through this town? 00:07:06.199 --> 00:07:07.579 I mean, Zacchaeus is very happy. 00:07:07.579 --> 00:07:09.500 He welcomes him gladly. 00:07:11.399 --> 00:07:13.699 But the rest of the town is not happy. 00:07:15.300 --> 00:07:17.339 All the people saw this in verse 7. 00:07:17.800 --> 00:07:18.659 They began to mutter, 00:07:18.779 --> 00:07:21.279 He has gone to be the guest of a sinner. 00:07:22.339 --> 00:07:24.339 I mean, hey, we came out to see this great prophet, 00:07:24.539 --> 00:07:25.419 this miracle worker, 00:07:25.740 --> 00:07:27.319 this teacher passing through town, 00:07:27.399 --> 00:07:28.959 this good man that everyone admires, 00:07:29.039 --> 00:07:31.159 and now he's consorting with the enemy. 00:07:31.160 --> 00:07:34.320 This betrayer of his people. 00:07:35.439 --> 00:07:38.420 This is not a good move, Jesus. 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:40.620 People do not approve. 00:07:41.740 --> 00:07:42.920 This guy is an outcast, 00:07:43.020 --> 00:07:44.180 and he put himself there 00:07:44.180 --> 00:07:45.880 by his own choices. 00:07:46.820 --> 00:07:48.100 This is not what the crowd 00:07:48.100 --> 00:07:50.200 thought Jesus should be doing. 00:07:51.840 --> 00:07:53.320 But what I want you to see today 00:07:53.320 --> 00:07:56.740 is that this is what Jesus came to earth to do. 00:07:56.740 --> 00:07:58.740 He came to bring God's mercy 00:07:58.740 --> 00:08:02.379 to people who do not deserve it. 00:08:05.480 --> 00:08:07.040 Jesus says in verse 10, 00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:09.540 He came to seek and save the lost. 00:08:10.100 --> 00:08:11.199 Was Zacchaeus lost? 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:12.540 Yes. 00:08:13.220 --> 00:08:15.280 No one would deny that. 00:08:16.280 --> 00:08:18.600 They all knew that this man was far from God. 00:08:19.280 --> 00:08:21.660 His way of life displayed it very clearly 00:08:21.660 --> 00:08:22.900 for everyone to see. 00:08:22.899 --> 00:08:26.219 And Jesus seeks this man out 00:08:26.219 --> 00:08:27.579 of the crowd that day. 00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:29.560 He eats dinner at this man's house 00:08:29.560 --> 00:08:30.899 because the Son of Man, 00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:31.799 the Messiah, 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:32.779 the Deliverer, 00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:34.039 the Eternal King, 00:08:34.179 --> 00:08:35.459 He did not come to earth 00:08:35.459 --> 00:08:36.139 to hang out 00:08:36.139 --> 00:08:37.720 with the upper crust of people 00:08:37.720 --> 00:08:39.100 who were able to prove 00:08:39.100 --> 00:08:40.199 their high quality 00:08:40.199 --> 00:08:41.639 and prove their goodness. 00:08:42.419 --> 00:08:43.559 He came with a mission 00:08:43.559 --> 00:08:45.860 to seek and save 00:08:45.860 --> 00:08:47.199 those who were lost. 00:08:47.819 --> 00:08:49.039 And He does both. 00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:51.139 He seeks 00:08:51.139 --> 00:08:53.240 and He saves. 00:08:53.500 --> 00:08:54.579 He tax collector. 00:09:08.599 --> 00:09:09.579 And later on, 00:09:09.860 --> 00:09:10.419 he will 00:09:10.419 --> 00:09:12.019 give away a lot of money. 00:09:12.159 --> 00:09:12.899 He will restore 00:09:12.899 --> 00:09:14.599 what he's taken from people wrongfully. 00:09:14.959 --> 00:09:16.439 He'll do good things. 00:09:16.740 --> 00:09:18.339 But when Jesus calls him, 00:09:18.340 --> 00:09:19.920 when Jesus says 00:09:19.920 --> 00:09:20.820 He's coming to him, 00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:22.420 Zacchaeus has not done 00:09:22.420 --> 00:09:23.940 any of those good things yet.
