00:01:11.700 --> 00:01:17.320 And yet many of the themes of what we see here are still very relevant today. 00:01:17.319 --> 00:01:31.959 And this passage, these two chapters that look full of names and genealogies, I think still have quite a lot to teach us and to help us to understand how God wants us to live in our day. 00:01:31.959 --> 00:01:41.259 Some theologians call the period that goes broadly from Adam to Noah as the dispensation of conscience. 00:01:41.899 --> 00:01:46.899 Now whether you agree with that theology or not, I think it's actually a helpful description. 00:01:46.900 --> 00:01:54.859 Because what's happening in this period is that by and large, human beings have very little knowledge of God. 00:01:55.420 --> 00:01:56.880 The law hasn't been given. 00:01:57.600 --> 00:02:02.380 The covenant promises through Noah and Abraham are still in the future. 00:02:02.379 --> 00:02:10.219 And largely, men and women are living by conscience of what we'd call today their I think we could describe it as a very dysfunctional family in many ways, and yet a family of high achievers. 00:03:25.060 --> 00:03:28.660 And again, that's something that maybe is quite current in our day. 00:03:29.120 --> 00:03:34.400 That often the families where the people are the greatest achievers in the terms of this world they do the most, 00:03:34.820 --> 00:03:37.500 actually behind the scenes there are all sorts of problems. 00:03:38.040 --> 00:03:41.320 Sometimes they come out, sometimes they don't. 00:03:41.319 --> 00:03:48.939 But Lamech and his family, I think, really and raise livestock. 00:04:22.819 --> 00:04:28.199 Now in his own way, living in tents was probably almost as significant as building cities. 00:04:28.199 --> 00:04:33.699 Building cities meant you could group together and people could live together and help each other. 00:04:34.539 --> 00:04:39.819 But building, having tents meant they could move around and they could go to the best places, 00:04:39.879 --> 00:04:43.639 in this case the best places for pasture for their flocks. 00:04:44.680 --> 00:04:48.599 Lamech also was the one who started farming, systematic farming, 00:04:48.659 --> 00:04:53.379 rather than just having lots of beasts breeding and so on, seemed to go back to him. 00:04:53.379 --> 00:04:57.779 Then the second son, Jubal, who was the musician. 00:04:58.519 --> 00:05:01.540 I don't think it was violins and trumpets, but to get the idea. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:08.560 He was the one who first started making music and seeing that as part of human life 00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:11.699 and something that people could enjoy and benefit from. 00:05:12.639 --> 00:05:17.300 And then the third son was Jubal Cain, and he was the one who made tools. 00:05:17.300 --> 00:05:22.860 He got bronze and he got iron, and he made things that would make life easier. 00:05:23.379 --> 00:05:29.959 And all of these things are presented to us as mankind, humankind, really progressing. 00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:36.339 Civilization is growing and developing, and that's a good thing. 00:05:37.600 --> 00:05:43.480 But at the same time, we're told a number of things about Lamech that would make us pause 00:05:43.480 --> 00:05:46.379 and think, well, perhaps it's not all good. 00:05:47.079 --> 00:05:49.899 The first thing we see is that he had two wives. 00:05:49.899 --> 00:05:53.219 Now, it's not uncommon in the Old Testament to have more than one wife. 00:05:53.339 --> 00:05:57.979 Many of the leading characters in the Old Testament, like David, indeed did. 00:05:58.759 --> 00:06:03.519 But this is beginning to get away from God's plan for marriage. 00:06:04.259 --> 00:06:05.639 Remember God's plan for marriage? 00:06:05.739 --> 00:06:09.599 One husband, one wife, they become one flesh. 00:06:10.179 --> 00:06:13.839 And as soon as you introduce the third person into that, it's kind of going. 00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:19.279 You don't have the same value being placed on marriage and on the intimacy of relationship, 00:06:19.699 --> 00:06:22.199 which is a one-to-one thing. 00:06:23.560 --> 00:06:25.919 And then in Lamech, you have violence. 00:06:26.359 --> 00:06:31.079 Violence like you had with Cain, and perhaps in some ways even worse. 00:06:31.959 --> 00:06:36.559 Now, the poem that Lamech gives us in the passage is quite interesting. 00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:41.420 I've killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me. 00:06:41.879 --> 00:06:47.120 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech 77 times. 00:06:47.360 --> 00:06:48.240 What's he saying? 00:06:49.079 --> 00:06:51.560 On the surface, I think maybe he's saying, 00:06:52.040 --> 00:06:54.980 my crime is not as bad as Cain's crime. 00:06:55.939 --> 00:06:58.620 Cain killed Abel in cold blood, if you like. 00:06:58.680 --> 00:06:59.819 It was murder. 00:07:00.779 --> 00:07:03.060 Lamech is saying, well, it wasn't murder in my case. 00:07:03.240 --> 00:07:04.459 Someone came and attacked me. 00:07:04.459 --> 00:07:07.180 I defended myself, and I killed them. 00:07:07.799 --> 00:07:10.939 And if Cain has God's protection seven times, 00:07:11.159 --> 00:07:12.979 then I deserve even more. 00:07:13.359 --> 00:07:16.259 I deserve 77 times. 00:07:17.099 --> 00:07:24.079 But of course, in it all, he is really just 00:08:06.339 And this thing of seven times and 77 times is interesting as well. 00:08:06.420 --> 00:08:10.139 So Lamech is saying, I deserve extra protection compared with Cain. 00:08:10.779 --> 00:08:13.860 Now, actually, Cain received God's grace, 00:08:14.099 --> 00:08:17.039 which he didn't deserve as a murderer. 00:08:17.040 --> 00:08:20.740 However, Lamech is assuming that he can have as seven times? 00:08:44.759 --> 00:08:46.340 Peter's thinking, this is really good. 00:08:46.620 --> 00:08:48.340 I'm showing him a really good follower of Jesus. 00:08:48.700 --> 00:08:52.240 I'm willing to forgive even up to seven times. 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:57.620 And Jesus says, no, not seven times, but 77 times, 00:08:57.700 --> 00:08:59.700 or perhaps it's 70 times seven times 00:08:59.700 --> 00:09:01.019 that people disagree on that. 00:09:01.060 --> 00:09:03.460 But I'm sure he was echoing what Lamech said. 00:09:03.460 --> 00:09:08.420 But instead of talking about vengeance and about getting revenge, 00:09:08.879 --> 00:09:11.280 Jesus is talking about the love that we should show 00:09:11.280 --> 00:09:14.940 and the forgiveness that we should offer. is doing fine, 00:09:26.560 --> 00:09:29.560 in the human heart, things are getting worse 00:09:29.560 --> 00:09:33.440 and the pride of life and the desire to have more for ourselves 00:09:33.460 -->
