sustainer of the universe, has chosen to speak in a way that we can understand who he is. 00:03:54.179 --> 00:03:58.859 Most of you probably know that at one point, Scotland was known as the land of the book. 00:03:58.860 --> 00:04:03.620 Now, I wasn't able to find exactly when that started or who coined that phrase. 00:04:03.760 --> 00:04:14.020 But by the 19th century, it was pretty much well known that Scotland was known as the land of the book because of her love for the Bible. 00:04:14.680 --> 00:04:16.780 The Reformation was a turning point in that. 00:04:16.939 --> 00:04:23.240 And John Knox and others wanted ordinary people to be able to study the scriptures for themselves. 00:04:23.720 --> 00:04:27.500 And so they created one of the most literate nations on the face of the nothing from us 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:37.240 has decided to reveal himself to us. 00:06:37.240 --> 00:06:42.300 Now, some of you may be thinking, great, yeah, another sermon making me feel guilty we start out in chapter 19 verses 1 through 6, 00:07:03.620 --> 00:07:06.860 where what we refer to as general revelation, 00:07:06.860 --> 00:07:11.300 that God has revealed himself in a general way through creation. 00:07:11.400 --> 00:07:14.400 It says the heavens are telling of the glory of God 00:07:14.400 --> 00:07:17.640 and the sky proclaims his handiwork. 00:07:18.420 --> 00:07:23.379 Day to day pours out speech and night to night reveals knowledge. 00:07:23.720 --> 00:07:25.560 Creation is revealing God. 00:07:25.560 --> 00:07:29.439 God has communicated to us through his world. there is a God and he is doing something. 00:08:20.060 --> 00:08:25.479 And if we just admit that, we will see that life is just more than our little worlds 00:08:25.479 --> 00:08:28.299 that we tend to live in, our little bubbles. 00:08:28.799 --> 00:08:34.199 But what exactly is God communicating through his creation? 00:08:34.799 --> 00:08:38.659 Paul actually addresses this in Romans chapter 1 verses 19 and 20 00:08:38.659 --> 00:08:39.639 when he says, 00:08:39.819 --> 00:08:44.839 For what can be known about God is plain to them because God has shown it to them. 00:08:45.399 --> 00:08:50.480 For his invisible attributes, namely his eternal power and his divine nature, 00:08:50.879 --> 00:08:55.219 have been clearly perceived ever since the creation of the world 00:08:55.219 --> 00:08:58.980 in the things that have been made. 00:08:59.360 --> 00:09:00.379 For they are without excuse. 00:09:00.500 --> 00:09:04.379 In other words, God has given us a knowledge about him that this, 00:11:04.620 --> 00:11:21.259 In other words, we're able to understand who God is 00:11:21.259 --> 00:11:25.080 because he's communicated himself through his word. 00:11:25.159 --> 00:11:28.460 Now, the next five verses are incredibly profound. 00:11:28.879 --> 00:11:33.080 There's like six nouns, six descriptors, six verbs. 00:11:33.080 --> 00:11:37.240 And someone has said it's kind of switches to the Hebrew Yahweh, 00:12:43.399 --> 00:12:46.360 the specific covenant name of God, 00:12:46.799 --> 00:12:48.959 translated in our Bibles as Lord, 00:12:49.519 --> 00:12:50.639 usually with all caps. 00:12:51.480 --> 00:12:52.419 Verse 1 through 6, 00:12:52.419 --> 00:12:55.759 creation has given us a general sense of who God is 00:12:55.759 --> 00:12:57.979 that everyone can see. 00:12:58.479 --> 00:12:59.819 But verses 7 through 11, 00:13:00.319 --> 00:13:02.639 God specifically reveals himself, 00:13:02.799 --> 00:13:04.620 revealing his covenant love. 00:13:04.839 --> 00:13:06.439 It's like one pastor said, 00:13:06.819 --> 00:13:08.519 he said, when you look at creation, 00:13:08.679 --> 00:13:10.500 you don't think God is a God of love. 00:13:10.539 --> 00:13:11.860 If you're just looking at creation, 00:13:12.099 --> 00:13:15.579 you might see the power and terror of a natural disaster, 00:13:15.579 --> 00:13:17.339 or you might see the violence 00:13:17.339 --> 00:13:19.019 in the predator-prey relationship, 00:13:19.019 --> 00:13:21.939 or you might see the majesty in the mountains 00:13:21.939 --> 00:13:24.600 and the stars and sunsets. 00:13:24.759 --> 00:13:26.179 But how do we know God's love? 00:13:26.240 --> 00:13:28.439 I mean, you don't get attacked by midges 00:13:28.439 --> 00:13:31.100 and be like, oh, God loves me deeply, his scriptures. 00:13:41.579 --> 00:13:44.960 He speaks to us through the scriptures. 00:13:44.960 --> 00:13:48.879 Peter addresses this briefly in 2 Peter 1, 00:13:49.540 --> 00:13:50.080 where he says, 00:13:50.480 --> 00:13:52.860 no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, 00:13:53.259 --> 00:13:55.060 but men spoke from God 00:13:55.060 --> 00:13:57.820 as they were carried along by
