many other prophetic books because Jonah will focus on seven words of the prophet Jonah in Jonah 3. 00:01:15.159 --> 00:01:17.859 But really the book of Jonah is about the life of Jonah. 00:01:18.799 letters. 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:36.359 Underneath that is the Hebrew name Yahweh. 00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:38.879 The personal name of God. 00:05:39.519 --> 00:05:43.879 This is the name God revealed himself to Moses in Exodus 3. 00:05:44.039 --> 00:05:48.919 When Moses revealed that he was going to deliver his people from Egypt. 00:05:48.920 --> 00:05:57.199 And so what from the beginning we're introduced to is God, Yahweh, is the deliverer. 00:05:57.560 --> 00:06:02.400 And he has a message for Jonah to proclaim to a particular people. 00:06:03.740 --> 00:06:05.720 Which brings us to this guy named Jonah. 00:06:05.840 --> 00:06:07.120 Jonah son of Amittai. 00:06:08.060 --> 00:06:10.580 There's not much spoken of him here. 00:06:10.700 --> 00:06:12.340 It was just like Jonah son of Amittai. 00:06:12.420 --> 00:06:13.020 This is the guy. 00:06:13.019 --> 00:06:21.139 But in 2 Kings 14.25, Jonah, the son of Amittai, is referenced. 00:06:21.879 --> 00:06:22.859 It's the same guy. 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:27.699 And so that allows us to place him at a certain place in time. 00:06:28.279 --> 00:06:31.579 And so Jonah was a prophet during Jeroboam 2. 00:06:32.019 --> 00:06:38.079 He was a prophet in the northern kingdom of Israel in the 8th century B.C. 00:06:38.079 --> 00:06:39.919 And here's why that's interesting. 00:06:41.060 --> 00:06:51.000 Jonah was a prophet in Samaria in the northern kingdom of Israel right before Samaria was sacked. 00:06:52.339 --> 00:06:54.539 Do you remember who sacked Samaria? 00:06:57.039 --> 00:06:57.879 Assyria. 00:06:59.459 --> 00:07:00.740 The Ninevites. 00:07:00.740 --> 00:07:10.600 And so this prophet is going to go preach the message to the people who will eventually be used by God to sack Samaria. 00:07:12.920 --> 00:07:14.639 Speaking of Nineveh. 00:07:15.379 --> 00:07:15.939 Nineveh. 00:07:17.160 --> 00:07:23.759 Its remains lie on the Tigris River on the outskirts of modern day Mosul, Iraq. 00:07:23.759 --> 00:07:30.019 It was the capital, the nerve center of Assyria. 00:07:30.740 --> 00:07:38.259 And though all Assyrians were image bearers of God, they were notoriously aggressive and brutal. 00:07:39.220 --> 00:07:45.379 They were a major player for imperial dominance in the ancient Near East. 00:07:46.379 --> 00:07:49.420 They were very proficient at psychological warfare. 00:07:49.600 --> 00:07:53.600 As one of my seminary profs would say, they were one of the early terrorists. 00:07:53.600 --> 00:08:04.980 For example, after defeating a city, it wouldn't be unusual for the Assyrians to impale people from that city. 00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:10.620 Impale them anally with a huge, huge pole. 00:08:11.560 --> 00:08:15.700 And then they would dig a hole and put the butt end of that pole in the hole. 00:08:15.699 --> 00:08:20.959 And they would lift this person up as a flag of sorts. 00:08:21.959 --> 00:08:27.060 A spectacle that showed the Assyrian dominance. 00:08:27.180 --> 00:08:28.039 It would have been graphic. 00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:29.079 It would have been terrifying. 00:08:29.779 --> 00:08:31.839 But it wasn't just one person they would do this to. 00:08:32.179 --> 00:08:37.340 They would surround the city with these kinds of flags after they would defeat it. 00:08:37.340 --> 00:08:39.700 They were brutal people. 00:08:40.720 --> 00:08:42.660 These are not innocent Ninevites. 00:08:43.800 --> 00:08:47.460 They were conducting a campaign of terror in the ancient Near East. 00:08:49.060 --> 00:08:52.120 This is the Assyria Jonah knew. 00:08:54.720 --> 00:08:56.440 Jonah is called to do something. 00:08:56.560 --> 00:09:00.540 He's called to call out against the city of Nineveh. 00:09:00.660 --> 00:09:02.120 He's called to call out against it. 00:09:02.180 --> 00:09:03.440 To preach against it. 00:09:03.440 --> 00:09:05.740 To say, stop doing what you're doing. 00:09:06.940 --> 00:09:08.840 It was a message of repentance. was aware, thoroughly aware, 00:09:27.780 --> 00:09:31.320 of the sinfulness of these Ninevites. 00:09:31.320 --> 00:09:36.980 And so God has called Jonah to go and preach against them. 00:09:37.860 what's really interesting here is this. 00:09:49.340 --> 00:09:53.660 The Assyrians worshipped a different God than Yahweh. 00:09:53.659 --> 00:09:56.059 But notice. 00:09:57.860 --> 00:10:02.399 Even though these Assyrians did not acknowledge Yahweh to be their God. 00:10:04.019 --> 00:10:07.959 God holds them accountable for their sinfulness. 00:10:09.120 --> 00:10:11.379 For their evil that has risen to Him. 00:10:12.059 --> 00:10:15.959 The God of the Bible is the God of all nations. 00:10:15.960 --> 00:10:20.600 All people everywhere are accountable to Him. 00:10:21.320 --> 00:10:23.639 Whether they acknowledge Him as their God. 00:10:23.740 --> 00:10:26.519 Or even if they acknowledge His existence. 00:10:28.379 --> 00:10:31.080 God never sweeps evil under the rug. 00:10:34.759 --> 00:10:36.440 So what this means for us is this. 00:10:36.560 --> 00:10:38.680 Everyone in the city of Kenosha is accountable to God. 00:10:39.320 --> 00:10:39.740 Everyone. 00:10:39.740 --> 00:10:45.320 Everybody in the city of Kenosha is accountable to God. 00:10:45.399 --> 00:10:49.799 And just as God sent Jonah to make known a message to a people, 00:10:49.960 --> 00:10:54.399 God is sending us to make a message known to the city of Kenosha. 00:10:54.740 --> 00:10:58.039 To call people to repentance and faith in Christ. 00:11:03.279 --> 00:11:05.740 Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved. 00:11:05.740 --> 00:11:18.180 God sends Jonah to Nineveh. 00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:23.440 And so it should be no surprise to us that our Savior King Jesus 00:11:23.440 --> 00:11:27.320 tells us to go to the nations to make disciples. 00:11:28.460 --> 00:11:32.620 What we see here is God's great missionary heart. 00:11:32.620 --> 00:11:38.779 He has always had a heart for all people to worship Him with everything they've got. 00:11:43.639 --> 00:11:48.019 This sense of arise, go, call. 00:11:49.080 --> 00:11:52.139 In Jonah 1-2, there's urgency to that. 00:11:52.980 --> 00:11:54.139 There's priority to that. 00:11:57.159 --> 00:12:00.220 In verse 3, we see Jonah's response. 00:12:00.220 --> 00:12:04.120 And it kind of takes us by surprise, doesn't Jonah rose to flee. 00:12:16.360 --> 00:12:18.019 He's getting out of town. 00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:22.040 He jumps on the first ship to Tarshish. 00:12:22.860 --> 00:12:25.600 Now, that might sound shows up three times in verse 3. 00:12:47.539 --> 00:12:52.799 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. 00:12:52.879 --> 00:12:55.899 He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. 00:12:56.079 --> 00:13:02.519 So he paid the fare and went on board to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. 00:13:03.500 --> 00:13:04.179 There's some emphasis. 00:13:05.039 --> 00:13:05.559 Do you know why? 00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:15.139 Tarshish was most likely the most westerly city in the known world of the time. 00:13:15.139 --> 00:13:22.460 So where Jonah was, he was in northern Israel and he used to go east to Nineveh. 00:13:23.039 --> 00:13:26.139 And so what Jonah does, he's like, I am out of here. 00:13:26.580 --> 00:13:30.799 He jumps on the first ship he can get onto. 00:13:31.379 --> 00:13:32.039 Pays a fare. 00:13:32.159 --> 00:13:39.519 He'll probably be on the ship for a year to get to the most westerly, remotest place on the as far away from God as he could. 00:14:22.919 --> 00:14:28.979 And the very fact that he jumps a ship just shows how desperate he is. 00:14:29.659 --> 00:14:30.860 Jews were landlubbers. 00:14:31.559 didn't run the other way? 00:15:37.940 --> 00:15:45.640 Aren't you glad that Jesus came, the ultimate missionary for us? 00:15:48.240 --> 00:15:54.000 Well, scene one ends with Jonah on deck of a Phoenician ship sailing to Tarshish. 00:15:54.120 --> 00:15:54.980 I love saying it. 00:15:56.640 --> 00:15:58.520 And we're left with tension. 00:15:59.460 --> 00:16:02.940 Because seriously, who How's this kind of thing turn out? 00:16:14.919 --> 00:16:18.579 You know how a ship has its name written on the stern, on the back? 00:16:18.759 --> 00:16:19.599 You know what I'm talking about? 00:16:19.639 --> 00:16:26.359 If you walk down by the marina, you'll see things like the Mary Jean or Wind Walker or Bobby 2. 00:16:29.839 --> 00:16:35.019 Jonah gets on this Phoenician ship and in his mind, that ship's name is the Escape. 00:16:36.679 --> 00:16:42.259 But what we're going to see happen is God has already got this ship named, baby. 00:16:43.539 --> 00:16:46.959 This ship is called the Prophet Catcher. 00:16:46.960 --> 00:16:51.860 And little does Jonah know that he's on board. 00:16:53.200 --> 00:16:56.840 And Jonah may run, but God is going to catch him in order to change him. 00:16:56.900 --> 00:17:03.980 And not only is he going to change Jonah, he's going to catch and change a crew of polytheistic sailors. 00:17:04.600 --> 00:17:05.980 And he's going to
