WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:18.120 So we are in Psalm 51, and one of the things that makes this psalm a little different than others that we have looked at is that the back story for this psalm is something that is clearly known. 00:00:19.039 --> 00:00:23.519 And so I'll provide that back story for us before we read it this morning. 00:00:23.519 --> 00:00:34.859 So the psalm speaks to incidences in David's life that are recorded in 2 Samuel chapters 11 and 12. 00:00:34.859 --> 00:00:52.879 And what has taken place here in these chapters is that David, who has been firmly established on the throne and is reigning as a very powerful king in Jerusalem, is at his palace. 00:00:53.560 --> 00:00:59.760 And he looks out and sees a very attractive woman named Bathsheba. 00:00:59.759 --> 00:01:09.060 And David sees the woman and calls her into his palace. 00:01:09.739 --> 00:01:23.620 And despite the fact that Bathsheba is married, has sex with her, and David engages in an adulterous act with Bathsheba. 00:01:24.920 --> 00:01:28.959 Bathsheba comes back to David and says, I'm pregnant by you. 00:01:28.959 --> 00:01:37.639 And upon hearing this, David comes up with a plan to protect his honor as he might see it. 00:01:38.099 --> 00:01:47.019 And so he has Bathsheba's husband, Uriah, who is serving in the military. 00:01:47.579 --> 00:01:56.379 So David summons him back and summons him to the palace and speaks with him there and says, Uriah, go home to your wife. 00:01:56.379 --> 00:01:59.959 And Uriah's like, no, I can't go home to my wife. 00:02:00.359 --> 00:02:03.159 Look, we're in the midst of a battle and war. 00:02:03.259 --> 00:02:12.039 How am I going to go home and enjoy the pleasures of my home and enjoy the pleasures of my wife while everyone else is out in the midst of this battle? 00:02:12.039 --> 00:02:21.319 And so when that doesn't work, David then tries to lure Uriah into heading home through the use of alcohol. 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:28.620 And despite being very drunk and inebriated, Uriah still refuses to go home and to spend time with his wife. 00:02:28.620 --> 00:02:36.099 So finally David realizes the course of action for him will be to have Uriah killed in battle. 00:02:36.759 --> 00:02:44.900 And so he sends Uriah back with secret plans for Uriah's demise in a forthcoming battle. 00:02:45.680 --> 00:02:53.840 And so the army, the group attacks a city wall and a very dangerous spot. 00:02:53.840 --> 00:02:57.439 And then withdraws from Uriah causing his death. 00:02:58.740 --> 00:03:03.580 Upon Uriah's death, Bathsheba goes through a time of mourning. 00:03:04.099 --> 00:03:09.159 And then David brings her into his house so that she can be his wife. 00:03:11.300 --> 00:03:15.360 Following these actions, the prophet Nathan comes to David. 00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:28.240 What would have to be one of the most difficult tasks is to not only call out someone for their sinful actions, as difficult as that might be. 00:03:28.740 --> 00:03:33.160 But to call out the most powerful man that is known to them. 00:03:33.520 --> 00:03:37.560 To call out this great king and to call out his sinful actions. 00:03:37.560 --> 00:03:45.580 To call out the sinful actions of someone who could simply have Nathan taken away and killed as easily as Uriah was taken away and killed. 00:03:46.159 --> 00:03:50.520 And on top of that, David is a man known for his commitment to God. 00:03:51.979 --> 00:03:58.400 And so Nathan, despite this, still comes and calls David out on his actions. 00:03:59.159 --> 00:04:01.120 Nathan comes to him with a story. 00:04:02.039 --> 00:04:04.099 And says, David, let me tell you a story. 00:04:04.099 --> 00:04:04.139 Okay. 00:04:05.060 --> 00:04:12.359 So there was this very rich man who had much. 00:04:13.699 --> 00:04:27.819 And when a guest came to visit him, instead of using one of the lambs from his own flock to feed his guest, to entertain his guest, he instead goes to this man who had but one lamb. 00:04:28.759 --> 00:04:31.699 And this one man loved his lamb so much. 00:04:31.699 --> 00:04:33.300 It was like a member of the family. 00:04:33.300 --> 00:04:35.540 He just loved that lamb. 00:04:36.900 --> 00:04:44.879 And this rich man takes that man to one lamb and provides it for the guest who has visited him. 00:04:45.780 --> 00:04:57.900 And then David rightly responds with great indignation that a man of great power and means and wealth would take advantage of someone so innocent as this single person. 00:04:57.899 --> 00:05:01.139 And then Nathan looks to him. 00:05:01.139 --> 00:05:03.939 And then Nathan looks to him and says, David, you are that man. 00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:20.060 And with those convicting words, David is confronted with the egregious actions that he has taken, with the sinful actions that he has taken. 00:05:20.060 --> 00:05:30.300 And so we have this psalm that is coming from David as he recognizes his own sin and his own failures. 00:05:30.300 --> 00:05:47.080 And as we come and look to the psalm, I would say there's an aspect of which we might look and say, wow, let's have great respect for David who offers this psalm of confession for his actions. 00:05:47.079 --> 00:06:01.180 And while David was right to come and confess and acknowledge this before God, I would say let us not come away with any positives towards David regarding this incident. 00:06:01.180 --> 00:06:15.460 David has engaged in simply horrifying sin, an abuse of power that has betrayed his position of trust and committed the most egregious of acts. 00:06:17.259 --> 00:06:24.639 And we see here that sin carves a grave path of destruction. 00:06:25.160 --> 00:06:30.040 And that is what we have with David here is that sin has caused a grave path of destruction. 00:06:30.040 --> 00:06:34.960 That will take place directly from this incident and also in David's life that follows. 00:06:36.620 --> 00:06:44.000 nature of sin. 00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:22.600 That being that sin is not simply something that we do wrong. 00:09:23.500 --> 00:09:27.659 But sin is our separation from God. 00:09:28.699 --> 00:09:31.259 And David here in verse 4 says, 00:09:31.259 --> 00:09:38.600 Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. 00:09:38.600 --> 00:09:45.740 And the reality is that David has done evil to many people in his actions. 00:09:45.740 --> 00:09:51.500 But what David is understanding and what David is speaking to is the very fundamental nature of sin. 00:09:51.960 --> 00:09:54.139 That sin is not the wrongs that we do. 00:09:54.680 --> 00:09:57.860 But sin is that which separates us from God. 00:09:58.340 --> 00:10:01.320 It is that which entered in the Garden of Eden. 00:10:02.060 --> 00:10:06.600 It is then when the relationship between God and his creation was broken. 00:10:06.600 --> 00:10:10.200 And thus sin entered into that relationship. 00:10:11.680
