WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.980 We're looking at Psalm 138 and David is given credit for 73 of the 150 Psalms. 00:00:05.980 --> 00:00:11.339 And one thing that we learn about David through the Psalms is that he was a man of praise. 00:00:11.580 --> 00:00:16.960 No matter how the Psalms start out, by the end he always reverts to the praise of God. 00:00:17.280 --> 00:00:27.420 In fact, the whole of the Psalter are ultimately praises to God and Psalm 38 may represent the absolute high point of David's praise. 00:00:28.300 --> 00:00:36.300 And even as he shows us how to live in praise of God, Psalm 138 also shows us that David finds himself in trouble once again. 00:00:36.800 --> 00:00:43.280 I was thinking this last week that we should thank the Lord from time to time for the trouble that he ordained in David's life. 00:00:43.380 --> 00:00:51.140 Because without it, we wouldn't have these such vivid, real examples of God's providential care if David had never had the issues that he did. 00:00:51.140 --> 00:00:54.420 Now Psalm 138 is in three parts. 00:00:54.420 --> 00:00:58.960 And at the start, David is singing about his deliverance from trouble. 00:00:59.980 --> 00:01:03.840 In verses 1 and 3, he's expressing exuberant praise to God. 00:01:04.519 --> 00:01:06.700 And notice how this is praise in the first person. 00:01:06.780 --> 00:01:09.579 All the times he says, I, me, or my. 00:01:10.659 --> 00:01:15.480 In the second part, verses 4 to 6, David turns to the nations and says, 00:01:15.480 --> 00:01:19.760 The kings of the nations will praise God because there's no one like him. 00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:24.719 In part 3, verses 7 and 8, David returns to the present. 00:01:24.840 --> 00:01:27.260 He returns to praise in the first person. 00:01:28.200 --> 00:01:30.320 And as we noted, David is in trouble again. 00:01:30.359 --> 00:01:32.620 And we see him calling on his experience. 00:01:32.620 --> 00:01:39.939 And his experience tells him that he can count on God and his continuous care for him all the way to the end. 00:01:40.760 --> 00:01:44.820 And there in verse 8, David expresses confidence that the Lord will not forsake him. 00:01:44.920 --> 00:01:53.080 That he is certain that the Lord will fulfill his promises to him because the steadfast love of the Lord endures forever. 00:01:53.079 --> 00:02:02.859 Now, many scholars believe that David wrote this psalm in response to the promise that he received from God in 2 Samuel 7. 00:02:03.500 --> 00:02:07.620 I'm sure many of you know the story, but God comes to David at the end of his life and he says, 00:02:07.719 --> 00:02:10.120 David, you have been a supreme failure. 00:02:10.759 --> 00:02:15.639 And you would be absolutely right to think that nothing good was ever going to come out of your life. 00:02:16.620 --> 00:02:20.120 But, I am going to fulfill the promise that I made to Adam. 00:02:20.120 --> 00:02:25.960 And I'm going to do it by bringing the Messiah into the world through your line of ancestry. 00:02:26.680 --> 00:02:30.020 I'm going to bring nations throughout history to myself. 00:02:30.460 --> 00:02:32.439 And I'm going to do it all through you. 00:02:33.460 --> 00:02:38.140 Now, this is the reference to Jesus, the Messiah, called the Son of David in Matthew 21. 00:02:39.060 --> 00:02:45.939 And David's response to God's promise, this news of the Messiah and his line, is here in Psalm 138. 00:02:45.939 --> 00:02:53.879 In C.S. Lewis' book, Reflections on the Psalms, there is a chapter entitled A Word About Praising. 00:02:54.759 --> 00:03:01.520 And in this chapter, Lewis explains that as he began to draw near to salvation, even for a period of time afterwards, 00:03:02.219 --> 00:03:05.520 he found the Psalms to actually be a stumbling block for him. 00:03:06.199 --> 00:03:09.419 He said he found in the Psalms that God appeared to be a narcissist. 00:03:09.419 --> 00:03:14.739 For the entire book, it was God who commanded people to worship him. 00:03:15.619 --> 00:03:19.060 It appears as if God was consumed by the idea of himself. 00:03:20.060 --> 00:03:20.439 He writes, 00:03:20.579 --> 00:03:24.799 And we all despise the man who demands continued assurance of his own virtue. 00:03:25.479 --> 00:03:31.819 And we despise even more the crowd of people around every millionaire or celebrity who gratifies that demand. 00:03:31.819 --> 00:03:39.639 And Lewis thought that the Psalms, from one end to the other, were simply a picture of God demanding that people praise him. 00:03:39.979 --> 00:03:42.859 He says he even gave him the vocabulary to do it with. 00:03:43.979 --> 00:03:51.659 But it wasn't until he began to understand praise from God's point of view that he was able to overcome these thoughts. 00:03:52.479 --> 00:03:58.979 It wasn't until he realized that true enjoyment spontaneously flows into flowers, wines, food, rare stamps, etc. 00:04:15.599 --> 00:04:16.240 It doesn't matter. 00:04:16.879 --> 00:04:20.920 The world loves to praise what it loves and values. 00:04:21.639 --> 00:04:28.219 And Lewis realized that true praise occurs when there is an overflowing of joy. 00:04:28.980 --> 00:04:32.460 And that is what the vocabulary of the Psalter shows us. 00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:37.080 say to another, isn't that just beautiful? 00:05:12.060 --> 00:05:21.019 You see, the Psalms tell us that when you derive your joy from God, you will praise him too. 00:05:22.259 --> 00:05:29.899 And even more so, it will complete your joy to share that with someone else, as the psalmist do with their readers and their fellow singers, 00:05:30.019 --> 00:05:33.480 as they delight and they enjoy the glory of God. 00:05:33.480 --> 00:05:39.200 I mean, true praise is the spontaneous expression of love and value. 00:05:40.480 --> 00:05:43.920 And this is one of the many reasons that we come so vital for those who truly value and love the Lord. 00:06:29.500 --> 00:06:33.680 We come to corporate worship for the completion of our joy. 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:40.360 And as David praises and rejoices, we should also note that we can learn from him 00:06:40.360 --> 00:06:42.500 how we are to live in praise of the Lord. 00:06:43.620 --> 00:06:48.160 Verses 1 to 3, he said we are to praise with all of our hearts. 00:07:14.220 --> 00:07:16.780 It's not something shallow or frivolous. 00:07:16.779 --> 00:07:23.279 Because you see, praise is the deepest expression of a soul in love with about us, if there is one time when few of us actually turn to praise of God, 00:07:46.799 --> 00:07:48.680 it's in the midst of our troubles. 00:07:49.599 --> 00:07:54.659 Those are the times when we might pray a lot more or make some promises about our future behavior. 00:07:55.719 --> 00:07:59.479 But are we really likely to do more than make a plea for help 00:07:59.480 --> 00:08:04.540 and actually turn to the Lord in praise of those moments of impending doom? 00:08:05.939 --> 00:08:07.800 But you see, David knows God. 00:08:08.319 --> 00:08:11.660 And he leaves us in no doubt as to --> 00:08:48.279 It's also interesting, there's a hint in verse 3 that 00:08:48.279 --> 00:08:52.379 God didn't actually answer his prayer in the way that David had prayed it. 00:08:53.460 --> Sort of reminds me of Paul when he talks about his thorn and his flesh. 00:09:14.259 --> 00:09:17.639 He prayed three times to have it removed and each time God says no. 00:09:18.539 --> 00:09:24.460 Instead, the answer to Paul was, my grace is sufficient for you and my strength is made perfect in weakness. 00:09:25.740 --> 00:09:29.240 So the Lord gave Paul the strength to deal with his thorn. 00:09:29.419 --> 00:09:36.460 And here, David recognizes that his strength of soul came from the Lord because there was nothing left of him. 00:09:36.460 --> 00:09:39.000 There was nothing he could do see, it was that recognition that leads David to praise God with his whole heart. 00:09:52.340 --> 00:09:57.160 You know, surely, too, when you think about the promise of the Messiah he received, 00:14:08.379 In Genesis, you'll know the word is used for God and it applies power and authority. 00:14:09.360 --> 00:14:15.120 But it's also used elsewhere to mean people of authority like judges, kings, princes, earthly rulers. 00:14:15.120 --> 00:14:19.419 So what David is actually saying here in verses 4 and 5 is, 00:14:19.980 --> 00:14:24.860 When I sing your praises in front of all the kings, the queens, the princes, the judges of the earth, 00:14:25.679 --> 00:14:28.580 they too will learn to praise God. 00:14:29.679 --> 00:14:34.519 See, David looks forward to the day when all the rulers of the earth will recognize Jesus. 00:14:35.480 --> 00:14:39.759 And they too will bow down before the king of kings and the lord of lords. 00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:45.759 Paul explains that for us in Philippians 2 when he says that God has highly exalted Jesus 00:14:45.759 --> 00:14:52.200 and bestowed on him the name that is above every other name so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow. 00:14:53.659 --> 00:14:58.980 I think we should also note from David that we are to praise the lord in front of others, 00:14:59.100 --> 00:15:02.759 even in front of those who might have the power to stop us. 00:15:03.559 --> 00:15:04.240 Verse 4, 00:15:04.240 --> 00:15:09.539 For all the kings of the earth shall give you praise when they hear the words of your mouth. 00:15:11.039 --> 00:15:15.120 You see, David wants to praise God in front of the powerful people of the world 00:15:15.120 --> 00:15:17.840 so that they might learn to praise God too. 00:15:19.500 --> 00:15:20.279 In Lord, you have set your glory above the heavens. 00:17:33.799 --> 00:17:38.980 When I look at the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, 00:17:39.900 --> 00:17:43.160 what is it that you are mindful of man? 00:17:44.759 --> 00:17:47.220 The psalmist is asking, Lord, you are so great. 00:17:47.960 --> 00:17:51.079 How in the world could you pause for even a split second 00:17:51.079 --> 00:17:54.819 to think about us, much less about me? 00:17:54.819 --> 00:17:59.039 And David says here in Psalm 138, 00:17:59.039 --> 00:18:01.659 Well, I have the answer. 00:18:01.779 --> 00:18:03.480 And here it is in verse 6. 00:18:04.519 --> 00:18:06.119 Although the Lord is high and exalted, 00:18:06.240 --> 00:18:09.980 he gives careful thought and attention to the low and to the humble. 00:18:10.639 --> 00:18:14.159 In fact, he holds them in high esteem. 00:18:15.779 --> 00:18:17.859 And David says to the kings of the nations, 00:18:17.859 --> 00:18:21.039 He cares about the humble and the lowly, 00:18:21.159 --> 00:18:22.939 the haughty and the prideful, 00:18:23.319 --> 00:18:26.099 the people who think they are a big deal and of great stature. 00:18:27.159 --> 00:18:28.859 Oh yeah, he keeps an eye on them too. 00:18:29.899 --> 00:18:34.119 But he does not allow them to enjoy the intimate relationship 00:18:34.119 --> 00:18:36.639 of his nearer presence. 00:18:37.759 --> 00:18:41.240 Now you see, it is the humble and the lowly of heart he draws near. 00:18:41.240 --> 00:18:44.140 When you think about it, 00:18:44.140 --> 00:18:46.259 that is a theme throughout the Old Testament, isn't it? 00:18:46.740 --> 00:18:49.140 And if you apply that theme to the New Testament, 00:18:49.839 --> 00:18:52.380 you can't help but think of God's plan of salvation 00:18:52.380 --> 00:18:57.099 for his people as the Lord Jesus drew near to rescue us. 00:18:58.200 --> 00:19:00.599 Once again, Paul explains in Philippians 2 00:19:00.599 --> 00:19:03.180 that Jesus was in the form of God, 00:19:03.259 --> 00:19:04.140 but he emptied himself. 00:19:04.500 --> 00:19:09.799 And he humbled himself by becoming obedient to
