through this passage. 00:01:44.200 --> 00:01:46.980 We're going to see Jesus in the temple. 00:01:47.340 --> 00:01:49.840 And then we're going to see Jesus drive out some insiders. 00:01:50.120 --> 00:01:52.440 And then Jesus is going to welcome in some outsiders. 00:01:52.780 --> 00:01:57.060 And then Jesus is going to be recognized and be praised by a bunch of kids. 00:01:57.219 --> 00:02:02.420 And then Jesus is going to be criticized by a bunch of blind religious leaders. 00:02:02.420 --> 00:02:07.280 And then Jesus is going to wrap it up by saying their praise vindicates me. 00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:11.840 So let's look at Jesus entering the temple. 00:02:12.680 --> 00:02:16.099 The first five words of verse 12. 00:02:16.219 --> 00:02:17.620 And Jesus entered the temple. to Jesus throwing some tables around. 00:02:24.460 --> 00:02:31.159 Well if we did that we would miss something of incredible significance. 00:02:32.300 --> 00:02:34.680 Jesus entered the temple. 00:02:36.500 --> 00:02:40.780 The temple is going to be an important backdrop in the remaining chapters of Matthew. 00:02:42.100 --> 00:02:49.520 But what I want to remind you of is that the Bible is a story of God dwelling with his people. 00:02:50.640 --> 00:02:52.120 Remember back in the Garden of Eden. 00:02:52.120 --> 00:02:55.700 God was present with his first people Adam and Eve. 00:02:57.140 --> 00:02:59.120 They hung out in the cool of the day together. 00:03:00.319 --> 00:03:02.140 Fast forward to the tabernacle. 00:03:03.159 --> 00:03:07.620 God's people Israel have been released sent out of Egypt. 00:03:07.900 --> 00:03:10.500 And God dwells in the midst of his people. 00:03:12.040 --> 00:03:16.759 And he has them construct for him a really elaborate tent called a tabernacle. 00:03:16.759 --> 00:03:21.639 And as God's people Israel were moving into the promised land. 00:03:21.780 --> 00:03:23.519 God would be with them in their midst. 00:03:23.939 --> 00:03:28.219 And he would come and descend in a cloud in this temple. 00:03:28.399 --> 00:03:29.519 And Moses would meet with him. 00:03:29.699 --> 00:03:31.039 God present with his people. 00:03:32.439 --> 00:03:34.239 Fast forward to Solomon. 00:03:34.560 --> 00:03:39.159 And the building of the first temple in Jerusalem in the promised land. 00:03:39.159 --> 00:03:42.979 Solomon builds this glorious temple. 00:03:42.979 --> 00:03:46.300 And we read how after the temple is dedicated. 00:03:46.539 --> 00:03:52.719 God in a cloud of his presence descends and occupies the temple. 00:03:53.019 --> 00:03:54.500 God present with his people. 00:03:55.780 --> 00:03:58.120 And what we read in Ezra. 00:03:58.500 --> 00:04:00.979 There's this awful thing that happens in 586. 00:04:01.639 --> 00:04:02.859 The Babylonians come in. 00:04:02.919 --> 00:04:05.460 They totally destroy the temple. 00:04:05.460 --> 00:04:09.740 But in Ezra, God rebuilds the temple. 00:04:10.120 --> 00:04:11.480 And it's the second temple. 00:04:11.620 --> 00:04:13.280 The temple of Zerubbabel. 00:04:14.980 --> 00:04:21.800 And it's this temple that Herod the Great decides to do a serious overhaul on. 00:04:21.860 --> 00:04:24.360 And expand and make amazing. 00:04:24.579 --> 00:04:28.180 And it's that temple that Jesus walks into that we're reading about right now. 00:04:32.759 --> 00:04:57.939 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet. 00:04:59.120 --> 00:05:01.599 Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son. 00:05:01.599 --> 00:05:04.779 And they should call his name Emmanuel. 00:05:05.459 --> 00:05:08.899 Which means God with us. 00:05:09.479 --> 00:05:10.339 Whose name is that? 00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:12.079 Jesus. 00:05:13.719 --> 00:07:04.379 Why is he so worked up? 00:07:04.379 --> 00:07:04.480 Why is he so quiet? 00:07:06.100 --> 00:07:07.819 Well it has to do with the people. 00:07:08.339 --> 00:07:09.579 That are in the temple. 00:07:10.379 --> 00:07:12.399 So let's look at who these people are. 00:07:13.100 --> 00:07:15.060 These are people who are selling and buying. 00:07:15.439 --> 00:07:17.300 These are people who are exchanging money. 00:07:17.620 --> 00:07:19.740 These are people who are selling pigeons or doves. 00:07:20.040 --> 00:07:21.180 Who are these people? 00:07:21.540 --> 00:07:22.719 And what are they doing there? 00:07:24.300 --> 00:07:27.379 Well I want to remind you that Jesus has entered into Jerusalem. 00:07:27.579 --> 00:07:29.480 The week leading up to Passover. 00:07:29.659 --> 00:07:31.439 Which is a great feast in Jerusalem. 00:07:31.439 --> 00:07:33.199 So Jerusalem the city. 00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:35.879 Is filling up with people. 00:07:35.879 --> 00:07:38.420 In order to celebrate Passover. 00:07:38.599 --> 00:07:39.180 To observe it. 00:07:39.300 --> 00:07:41.180 It's a big holy festival. 00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:46.000 And so you have all these people coming into this city. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:47.480 From all over the place. 00:07:47.860 --> 00:07:49.360 To quote unquote worship. 00:07:52.639 --> 00:07:56.379 And part of their worship is going to be going to make this multi-mile trip down to Jerusalem to observe Passover. 00:08:09.500 --> 00:08:11.659 And we're like thinking what do we bring with us? 00:08:11.839 --> 00:08:15.339 And we're like should we bring our Passover lamb? 00:08:15.740 --> 00:08:17.040 And I'm going to tell you you know what? 00:08:17.480 --> 00:08:19.100 We've got multiple days ahead of us. 00:08:19.199 --> If we were to go to Jerusalem and give a money offering in the temple. 00:08:39.519 --> 00:08:45.759 We would need to convert our Roman money into the currency of the temple. 00:08:45.939 --> 00:08:48.639 Which was Tyrian money from Tyre. 00:08:48.740 --> 00:08:52.399 Because it was such a solid currency of the day. 00:08:52.899 --> 00:08:54.639 And so we would need to exchange our money.
