But are we all in agreement that targets, when it comes to health and things 00:03:15.399 --> 00:03:22.419 like that, are good? You know, we're given these guidelines for better health. And I think the word 00:03:22.419 --> 00:03:29.759 that we put next to it sometimes is, these are things we should be doing. And sometimes it's that 00:03:29.759 --> 00:03:38.199 sense of should, that sense of obligation, which can make us feel a bit defeated at times. 00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:45.019 And for those who are particularly intent on reaching those targets, it's almost like we can 00:03:45.019 --> 00:03:52.759 kind of get slightly addicted to them, slightly enslaved to watching that circle meet at the end. 00:03:52.759 --> 00:03:59.219 And it's often accompanied, isn't it, by this fear that if we don't reach that target, our well-being 00:03:59.219 --> 00:04:05.899 will in some way suffer. Or, as it has been said in my household, if you don't brush your teeth, 00:04:06.120 --> 00:04:13.120 your teeth will fall out. Or, slightly more subtle but still just as fear-mongering, it's okay, 00:04:13.560 --> 00:04:15.659 you only need to brush the teeth you want to keep. 00:04:15.659 --> 00:04:21.779 How many of you have been parented like that? How many of us still parent like that? 00:04:21.779 --> 00:04:29.360 Ooh, I don't want to go there. That's just an example, right? Folks, that feeling of being 00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:37.500 fear-driven, guilt and anxiety induced, when you've got those targets you know you should 00:04:37.500 --> 00:04:44.759 meet. For many people, when it comes to their moral or spiritual life, 00:04:44.759 --> 00:04:54.259 that's often the effect the church has on them. Okay? So for someone who is struggling to hit the 00:04:54.259 --> 00:05:01.300 spiritual and moral optimal targets, church can feel like the last place you want to go. 00:05:01.860 --> 00:05:06.759 You know, if you feel bad, come to church and you'll feel worse. I wonder if that's been your 00:05:06.759 --> 00:05:13.860 experience or perhaps that's perception a family member or a friend of yours has about church. 00:05:14.759 --> 00:05:22.420 It's all about meeting targets that make us sometimes feel worse when we don't hit them. 00:05:23.860 --> 00:05:28.240 And today we're going to be exploring a little bit why is it that some people feel like that? 00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:36.259 And I have to say, very often, it's the people who make out they are living the optimal spiritual and 00:05:36.259 --> 00:05:42.420 moral life that cause those around them to feel worse rather than better. There's something about 00:05:42.420 --> 00:05:53.600 religious pride which is really off-putting. And even worse, hypocrisy. Because they just cover 00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:59.160 things up that they can't admit to themselves perhaps, or particularly to others, where they're 00:05:59.160 --> 00:06:07.280 missing the mark. And it leads to people, particularly I had to say, people who are employed to talk about 00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:14.079 Christian things, often walking around like sort of empty shells, speaking the right stuff, but inside 00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:20.959 they're empty. And in fact, Jesus called such characters whitewashed tombs. Look good on the 00:06:20.959 --> 00:06:29.319 outside, but inside they're full of death. It's empty. Why am I telling you all this? Why have we started off 00:06:29.319 --> 00:06:36.699 this quiz? Because actually, this parallels quite closely what is happening in the book of Romans 00:06:36.699 --> 00:06:43.300 that we are exploring together. This letter to the Christians in Rome, as we've already heard, is a 00:06:43.300 --> 00:06:50.199 it's quite a long, continuous, logical argument. And she's trying to make several points, but they're all 00:06:50.199 --> 00:06:56.339 very cohesive into one. And if you remember, if you've been with us, don't worry if you haven't, 00:06:56.339 --> 00:07:02.819 I'll try and catch us up. Paul wants us to consider, particularly today, how there are two powers 00:07:02.819 --> 00:07:08.599 at work within us. Okay? Those of you who are with us, or you might know the book of Romans, 00:07:08.659 --> 00:07:14.979 will remember a few weeks ago, we looked at how Paul speaks of one of these powers being that of 00:07:14.979 --> 00:07:21.839 godlessness and wickedness, which is taking us away from God. It distorts our minds and our morals. 00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:28.419 And it's this, it's a universal human condition. That's what he's keen to tell us. And it's almost 00:07:28.419 --> 00:07:38.379 like a virus that we carry that eventually leads to spiritual and physical death. And Paul calls this 00:07:38.379 --> 00:07:46.479 power the power of the flesh. Or sometimes that is translated in our English Bibles as the sinful nature. 00:07:46.480 --> 00:07:54.360 Now, it's really important we don't understand that Paul is saying that our flesh, our bodies, 00:07:54.720 --> 00:08:00.160 are kind of bad. That is the thoughts of some sort of religious philosophies. It's not that he's trying 00:08:00.160 --> 00:08:07.740 to say that. But there is a power, he's saying, that is in work in us that opposes the life that God 00:08:07.740 --> 00:08:17.980 wants for us. And he's very serious about that. And he, as we saw, describes the sort of downward spiral 00:08:17.980 --> 00:08:25.680 that comes as we live that out unchecked, and we become both complicit in it and victims of it. 00:08:26.019 --> 00:08:32.879 And it's all a big mess. But as Paul writes on, as we go through the chapters, he introduces another 00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:39.559 power, if you like, a power that God has introduced to his people to try and help them understand 00:08:39.559 --> 00:08:46.759 how they must live in order to be a people who are fit to have the holy presence of God 00:08:46.759 --> 00:08:56.860 live among them. And that power is the law. The law. And when we say the law, it was introduced to the 00:08:56.860 --> 00:09:01.679 people of Israel on Mount Sinai, if you remember, it's the Ten Commandments and all that. In fact, 00:09:01.679 --> 00:09:08.979 there's 600-odd guidelines that make up the Hebraic law, that outline for God's people their optimal 00:09:08.979 --> 00:09:16.120 targets. Yeah? Particularly in the realm of spiritual, moral, and social matters. 00:09:18.379 --> 00:09:28.479 And by the time we get to Romans chapter 7, Paul is saying, look, this law is good, and it is holy. 00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:36.820 But when it is introduced to those who are under the power of the flesh, who live in their minds and 00:09:36.820 --> 00:09:43.700 their hearts by the sinful nature, all that the introduction of that law does is make them 00:09:43.700 --> 00:09:49.440 realize that they're missing the mark. For example, says Paul, if you say to someone, 00:09:49.440 --> 00:09:56.980 do not covet, i.e., don't desire other people's stuff, and you start thinking about it, you'll 00:09:56.980 --> 00:10:02.620 suddenly realize just how much coveting you do. Or if you say, do not give false testimony, that means 00:10:02.620 --> 00:10:08.140 don't lie or exaggerate to put yourself in a better light. Ooh, just how often do I do that? 00:10:08.139 --> 00:10:17.299 So that good law, it's good, and it's holy, that is intended to bring life, it produces some kind of 00:10:17.299 --> 00:10:27.600 death in us. Guilt, fear, anxiety. Because, Paul says, the power of the flesh, the sinful nature, 00:10:27.600 --> 00:10:30.540 is like in opposition to that good law. 00:10:33.580 --> 00:10:36.759 And so those, says Paul, who know God's good law, 00:10:37.940 --> 00:10:43.139 yet are weighed down by the power of the flesh, they live in this agonizing tension. He puts it 00:10:43.139 --> 00:10:50.019 like this, for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. I do not do the 00:10:50.019 --> 00:10:56.500 good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do, this I keep on doing. Now, if I do what I do not 00:10:56.500 --> 00:11:01.259 want to do, it's no longer I who do it, but it's sin living in me that does it. So there's this 00:11:01.259 --> 00:11:07.899 agonizing tension that even if we agree in our minds that God is, and his laws are good, 00:11:08.659 --> 00:11:14.659 that isn't enough power to help us meet that target. Because that other power that is working 00:11:14.659 --> 00:11:21.139 in us is pulling us downwards, it's waging war, if you like, against that good desire. And so willpower 00:11:21.139 --> 00:11:29.720 is not enough for us to reach God's optimal targets. And so by the end of chapter 7, verse 22, 00:11:29.860 --> 00:11:35.759 Paul writes, for in my inner being I delight in God's law, but I see another law or power at work 00:11:35.759 --> 00:11:40.679 in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work 00:11:40.679 --> 00:11:48.379 within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 00:11:48.379 --> 00:11:54.200 Wretched. It's a horrible situation to be in. Perhaps you can feel some of that tension. 00:11:55.759 --> 00:12:01.799 I myself, in my mind, am a slave to God's law, but in my sinful nature, a slave to the law of sin. 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:13.019 Do you see this enslavement that's at work, these powers or laws that are at work in the human heart? 00:12:13.019 --> 00:12:42.659 Do you see this? Do you feel the tension? Do you just get a sense of that? 00:12:42.659 --> 00:12:50.500 Maybe that's even from your own experience, or you can imagine what it is for those who are in that mindset. 00:12:52.899 --> 00:12:57.299 Well, let's allow God to release that tension for us. 00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:05.279 I'm going to read. What I'm going to do this morning is simply take us through those verses that Cheryl read for us 00:13:05.279 --> 00:13:09.600 and just try and help you unpack the logic of it, because it's all in there. 00:13:09.679 --> 00:13:11.339 It's such rich, amazing stuff. 00:13:11.720 --> 00:13:17.919 I'm going to read just a couple of verses each and then just spend a little bit of time making sure we understand it 00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:20.139 and can get it into our heads and into our hearts. 00:13:21.439 --> 00:13:25.659 So Paul says, after telling us that about this entrapment that we're in, 00:13:25.659 --> 00:13:30.679 this enslavement to sin and enslavement to the law, he says, 00:13:31.779 --> 00:13:38.319 therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:13:39.159 --> 00:13:47.860 Because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 00:13:47.860 --> 00:13:55.820 So what Paul calls here the law of the Spirit who gives life, so the word of the Spirit, 00:13:56.379 --> 00:14:01.500 it sets us free from feeling condemned, from guilt before God, 00:14:01.560 --> 00:14:07.279 because it frees us, first of all, from the power of sin and death that we've been trapped in. 00:14:07.779 --> 00:14:08.480 And he goes on, 00:14:08.480 --> 00:14:14.620 for what the law, that good law given to
