is an absurd thought, isn't it? 00:03:46.400 --> 00:03:50.599 That the judge of all the universe, the creator of all things, 00:03:50.680 --> 00:03:57.060 would ever have to give a defense of himself before man, before his creation. 00:03:57.639 --> 00:04:02.519 But that is exactly the scenario that we find ourselves in here in John chapter 5. 00:04:02.659 --> 00:04:05.639 Jesus Christ is a man accused. 00:04:05.639 --> 00:04:08.119 He has just run in with the Pharisees. 00:04:08.219 --> 00:04:10.239 He's been accused of breaking the Sabbath. 00:04:10.479 --> 00:04:13.119 But now, an even bigger offense, a greater offense, 00:04:13.219 --> 00:04:18.060 he's being accused of blasphemy, of making himself equal with God. 00:04:18.139 --> 00:04:20.639 You might remember last week, his defense, he said, 00:04:20.740 --> 00:04:24.360 The Father is working until now, and I am working. 00:04:25.219 --> 00:04:31.360 He's claimed total equality with God the Father in all of his actions. 00:04:31.599 --> 00:04:33.779 So much so that he says in verse 30, 00:04:33.779 --> 00:04:35.799 I can do nothing on my own. 00:04:36.459 --> 00:04:39.179 As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, 00:04:39.579 --> 00:04:44.079 because I seek not my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 00:04:44.279 --> 00:04:47.759 Jesus is claiming that every one of his thoughts, 00:04:47.959 --> 00:04:51.639 every one of his actions, every one of his steps that he takes, 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.059 is in sync, is united. 00:04:54.259 --> 00:04:55.519 It comes from the Father. 00:04:55.659 --> 00:04:58.179 He can do nothing on his own. 00:04:58.180 --> 00:05:03.519 Now this, we have to understand, is an incredibly bold claim. 00:05:03.639 --> 00:05:04.500 But there's an issue here. 00:05:05.360 --> 00:05:06.819 Jesus himself acknowledges it. 00:05:06.860 --> 00:05:07.920 Verse 31, look there. 00:05:08.600 --> 00:05:09.000 He says, 00:05:09.139 --> 00:05:11.699 If I alone bear witness about myself, 00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:15.259 then my testimony is not true. 00:05:16.420 --> 00:05:18.939 In other words, if you make a claim like this, 00:05:19.180 --> 00:05:22.000 if you make a claim, something this big, this grand, 00:05:22.060 --> 00:05:24.879 you had better be ready to back it up. 00:05:24.879 --> 00:05:28.699 And that's exactly what we see Jesus do here in John chapter 5. 00:05:28.759 --> 00:05:31.980 He does just that by providing witnesses. 00:05:32.959 --> 00:05:35.839 And here's what I want us to see this morning from this passage. 00:05:36.740 --> 00:05:43.279 That God, in his abundant mercy towards blind sinners like us, 00:05:43.839 --> 00:05:51.420 has provided an overwhelming flood of evidence that Jesus is the Messiah. 00:05:51.420 --> 00:05:56.560 He's provided witness after witness after witness after witness, 00:05:56.699 --> 00:06:01.180 confirming the identity and the truth and the worth of Christ. 00:06:02.120 --> 00:06:05.379 And this is such a wonderful grace of God for sinners like us, 00:06:05.439 --> 00:06:09.060 because if you're like me, we so often, if we're honest, 00:06:09.220 --> 00:06:12.060 we so often waver in our belief. 00:06:12.800 --> 00:06:13.780 We so often waver. 00:06:13.879 --> 00:06:15.480 We ebb and flow in our confidence. 00:06:15.480 --> 00:06:18.840 But evidence strengthens confidence. 00:06:18.839 --> 00:06:23.279 And we ought to rejoice, because passages like this, Christians, 00:06:23.419 --> 00:06:26.619 show us that our faith is not blind. 00:06:27.500 --> 00:06:30.179 Our belief, what we profess to believe as Christians, 00:06:30.319 --> 00:06:31.779 it's not unsupported. 00:06:32.459 --> 00:06:34.199 John, we've seen over and over again, 00:06:34.299 --> 00:06:38.659 he's written these things that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, 00:06:39.239 --> 00:06:42.659 and that by believing, we might have life in his name. 00:06:42.739 --> 00:06:44.579 Our faith is strengthened. 00:06:44.579 --> 00:06:46.120 It's bolstered. 00:06:46.199 --> 00:06:49.859 It's supported by many witnesses to Christ. 00:06:50.339 --> 00:06:52.800 Our witness, as we go and share the gospel, 00:06:52.919 --> 00:06:53.620 is strengthened. 00:06:53.859 --> 00:06:54.439 It's encouraged. 00:06:54.579 --> 00:06:57.779 It's supported by many witnesses to Christ. 00:06:57.899 --> 00:07:03.819 So Jesus here, he calls up to the stand four witnesses to back up his claim. 00:07:04.659 --> 00:07:08.759 We see four witnesses here to the identity of Christ. 00:07:08.860 --> 00:07:24.259 --> 00:07:25.040 He says, 00:07:25.139 --> 00:07:28.480 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 00:07:29.060 --> 00:07:31.480 Not that the testimony that I received is from man, 00:07:31.579 --> 00:07:35.100 but I say these things so that you may be saved. 00:07:35.579 --> 00:07:37.519 He was a burning and shining lamp, 00:07:37.560 --> 00:07:41.459 and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 00:07:41.459 --> 00:07:44.519 See, John the Baptist, we saw from chapter one, 00:07:44.620 --> 00:07:45.680 he was a witness. 00:07:45.979 --> 00:07:47.339 He was a forerunner. 00:07:47.439 --> 00:07:50.120 He came preparing the way for the Messiah, 00:07:50.779 --> 00:07:52.719 proclaiming the glory of Christ. 00:07:53.060 --> 00:07:54.719 Do you remember how chapter one described him? 00:07:55.479 --> 00:07:57.479 You might even just flip back there just for a moment. 00:07:57.620 --> 00:08:00.240 Chapter one, verse six, it tells us, 00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:03.340 there was a man sent from God whose name was John. 00:08:03.900 --> 00:08:05.860 He came as a witness, 00:08:06.400 --> 00:08:08.379 bearing witness about the light 00:08:08.379 --> 00:08:11.079 that all might believe through him. 00:08:11.340 --> 00:08:12.280 He was not the light, 00:08:12.360 --> 00:08:14.740 but he came to bear witness about the light. 00:08:15.439 --> 00:08:17.720 This was the mission and purpose of John. 00:08:17.800 --> 00:08:21.240 He was sent by God to bear witness to Christ. 00:08:21.360 --> 00:08:22.620 Verse 15, chapter one. 00:08:22.980 --> 00:08:23.220 It says, 00:08:23.220 --> 00:08:25.700 John bore witness about him and cried out, 00:08:25.820 --> 00:08:27.100 this is he of whom I said, 00:08:27.180 --> 00:08:29.120 we know some grumbled, 00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:32.080 some questioned, 00:09:32.320 --> 00:09:34.980 many objected to his teaching, 00:09:35.240 --> 00:09:38.180 but many were coming to him to be baptized. 00:09:39.200 --> 00:09:41.900 Many were coming and hearing his message. 00:09:42.100 --> 00:09:45.840 But despite that temporary revival and attention 00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:47.420 that came with the ministry of John, 00:09:47.419 --> 00:09:51.839 these Pharisees were not able to see clearly 00:09:51.839 --> 00:09:54.559 the message of his ministry. 00:09:54.740 --> 00:09:55.879 Do you remember what his message was? 00:09:56.559 --> 00:09:57.399 Don't look at me. 00:09:58.419 --> 00:09:59.319 Don't look at me. 00:10:00.019 --> 00:10:01.039 Look at Christ. 00:10:01.579 --> 00:10:13.980 --> 00:10:18.139 we mentioned that part of John the Apostle's purpose 00:10:18.139 --> 00:10:19.759 in writing this gospel, 00:10:20.300 --> 00:10:23.080 part of his purpose in including these accounts 00:10:23.080 --> 00:10:25.820 of John the Baptist in this story of Jesus 00:10:25.820 --> 00:10:30.139 is to root these claims about Christ 00:10:30.139 --> 00:10:32.259 in human history. 00:10:33.240 --> 00:10:34.580 So he says there was a man. 00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:36.460 He's a real man. 00:10:36.519 --> 00:10:37.320 His name was John. 00:10:37.379 --> 00:10:38.360 He was sent for this purpose. 00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:39.180 Here's what he said. 00:10:39.259 --> 00:10:40.340 Here's how he was received. 00:10:40.340 --> 00:10:43.580 The things that we're reading about here in this gospel, 00:10:43.820 --> 00:10:46.519 they took place in human history. 00:10:47.379 --> 00:10:50.000 We need to remember these are not fairy tales. 00:10:50.660 --> 00:10:51.720 They're not legends. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:53.580 They are time stamped. 00:10:54.220 --> 00:10:56.720 Jesus lived and he breathed just like we do. 00:10:56.800 --> 00:10:58.360 He ate and he drank just like we do. 00:10:58.440 --> 00:11:02.100 He walked on the earth and lived in human history. 00:11:02.680 --> 00:11:05.940 And John the Baptist is just one of many 00:11:05.940 --> 00:11:09.960 human witnesses to the glory of Christ. 00:11:11.160 --> 00:11:13.380 You might think through the Old Testament. 00:11:14.340 --> 00:11:17.200 Every single one of the Old Testament prophets 00:11:17.200 --> 00:11:19.740 from Moses to Isaiah to Jeremiah, 00:11:20.320 --> 00:11:23.960 they all bore witness to the coming Messiah. 00:11:24.640 --> 00:11:26.440 They all looked ahead and bore witness 00:11:26.440 --> 00:11:29.040 to the Messiah who was to come. 00:11:29.120 --> 00:11:30.540 They bore witness to Christ. 00:11:30.680 --> 00:11:33.920 And now John, the last of the Old Testament prophets, 00:11:33.919 --> 00:11:36.459 he sort of serves as the hinge between the Old 00:11:36.459 --> 00:11:37.519 and the New Testaments. 00:11:37.759 --> 00:11:40.759 He lays eyes on Christ and says, this is him. 00:11:41.399 --> 00:11:43.439 This is the one that we've been waiting for. 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:46.659 But that human witness to the person of Christ, 00:11:46.759 --> 00:11:48.839 it didn't stop with John, did it? 00:11:49.599 --> 00:11:52.519 Continued on through the disciples of Jesus. 00:11:53.339 --> 00:11:55.860 As they laid eyes on him, they saw who he was. 00:11:55.919 --> 00:11:57.539 They bore witness to his glory. 00:11:57.679 --> 00:12:00.799 And that witness carried on to the witness of the church. 00:12:00.799 --> 00:12:05.219 From Jerusalem to should ever grow weary in your faith, 00:12:35.460 --> 00:12:37.220 one thing I'd encourage you to do 00:12:37.220 --> 00:12:42.779 is to consider the human historical witness to Christ. 00:12:43.939 the Baptist 00:13:45.019 --> 00:13:47.539 and with him the historical witness of the church, 00:13:47.539 --> 00:13:48.279 but he says, 00:13:49.039 --> 00:13:52.439 the testimony that I have is that strength. 00:14:27.339 --> 00:14:29.659 So consider what Jesus has done 00:14:29.659 --> 00:14:31.279 to this point in the Gospel of John. 00:14:31.360 --> 00:14:32.599 We're only five chapters in, 00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:35.620 but he's already turned the water into wine. 00:14:36.459 --> 00:14:38.399 He has cleared the temple. 00:14:38.579 --> 00:14:40.759 He's prophesied his death and his
