David writes this psalm about the time, as it says in the superscription at the very 00:00:27.559 --> 00:00:30.519 beginning, when he had fled from Saul into the cave. 00:00:31.559 --> 00:00:33.920 How many of you have ever been into a cave? 00:00:35.879 --> 00:00:37.460 Okay, we've got a few people. 00:00:38.159 --> 00:00:43.280 When I was down in Montana on a family vacation a number of years back when I was younger, 00:00:43.280 --> 00:00:47.299 we went to a family camp there and part of the activities were going on hikes in kind 00:00:47.299 --> 00:00:53.820 of this mountainous area in southern Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park there. 00:00:53.820 --> 00:00:57.380 And on several of those hikes, we came across some caves. 00:00:57.980 --> 00:01:00.600 One of them was an awesome cave. 00:01:00.700 --> 00:01:04.579 It was just this huge opening and kind of angled up at the sun. 00:01:05.079 --> 00:01:07.920 And so the whole thing was just lit up and bright inside. 00:01:08.099 --> 00:01:09.500 It was kind of a neat place to be. 00:01:10.340 --> 00:01:13.240 But on another hike, we came across a very different cave. 00:01:13.560 --> 00:01:19.819 And it kind of had a small opening and it was kind of shaped like a tunnel that just kind 00:01:19.819 --> 00:01:23.319 of went back into the mountain and kind of curved a little bit. 00:01:23.319 --> 00:01:30.539 And I remember as some of us went into that cave, just that feeling, the further we got 00:01:30.539 --> 00:01:36.339 into the cave, I was surprised at just how dark it got. 00:01:36.979 --> 00:01:42.539 The light from the entrance didn't seem to be penetrating into the darkness in the cave. 00:01:42.540 --> 00:01:48.500 And before long, when we went around that little bend, it was pitch black. 00:01:49.219 --> 00:01:51.880 I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. 00:01:52.719 --> 00:01:55.440 And you could just almost feel the darkness. 00:01:55.719 --> 00:01:56.440 It was cool. 00:02:55.259 --> 00:03:01.800 But that's exactly the situation that we find David in as in the time that he writes about 00:03:01.800 --> 00:03:02.599 in this psalm. 00:03:02.879 --> 00:03:03.780 He's in a cave. 00:03:03.780 --> 00:03:06.259 Of course, David has been on the run. 00:03:07.099 --> 00:03:09.060 He's been fleeing from King Saul. 00:03:09.300 --> 00:03:15.920 King Saul is, he sees David as a threat, as someone who is trying to take the throne from 00:03:15.920 --> 00:03:16.159 him. 00:03:16.199 --> 00:03:20.379 And so he is hunting David and chasing him all over the land of Israel. 00:03:21.240 --> 00:03:26.259 And we're kind of, as we read the story in Samuel, wondering how long is this going to 00:03:26.259 --> 00:03:29.639 go on before Saul finally catches up with him? 00:03:29.639 --> 00:03:32.459 And gets his hands on him. 00:03:33.719 --> 00:03:37.340 And Saul has got the whole army with him. 00:03:37.399 --> 00:03:39.139 Not the whole army, but a good chunk of it. 00:03:39.179 --> 00:03:41.340 He's got 3,000 armed men with him. 00:03:41.399 --> 00:03:44.379 And they're combing the countryside looking for David. 00:03:44.379 --> 00:03:50.639 And in the psalm that we're looking at this morning, it's about the time when, at a place 00:03:50.639 --> 00:03:55.639 called En Gedi, Saul and his men kind of close in on David. 00:03:55.840 --> 00:03:59.139 And they corner him and the 400 men that are with David. 00:03:59.139 --> 00:04:06.799 En Gedi is kind of right, it's in the hill country, and it's right against the Dead Sea. 00:04:06.939 --> 00:04:10.319 And so there's nowhere for David and his men to run. 00:04:11.179 --> 00:04:15.319 And so with their backs up against the wall, they kind of do the best that they can. 00:04:15.719 --> 00:04:17.500 And they find a large cave. 00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:21.399 They go in there, and they lay low, and they hide. 00:04:22.819 --> 00:04:27.539 Can you imagine what this would have been like sense of guilt, but there's no indication that David 00:07:35.720 --> 00:07:39.780 is asking for forgiveness here or that he's feeling guilty. 00:07:39.779 --> 00:07:46.759 Probably some of the other If Saul and these 3,000 men find out that David and his men are in the cave, 00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:25.759 this will be a day of destruction. 00:08:26.759 --> 00:08:28.699 A day of disaster. those who hotly pursue me. 00:09:03.500 --> 00:09:07.780 In verse 4, he says, I'm in the midst of lions. 00:09:08.920 --> 00:09:12.740 Creatures that are known for surrounding their prey. 00:09:12.740 --> 00:09:13.740 He's in the midst of the enemy. 00:09:13.740 --> 00:09:14.039 He's in the midst of the enemy. 00:09:14.039 --> 00:09:20.759 He says, I'm forced to dwell among ravenous beasts. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:24.279 You notice that word forced. 00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:29.620 Literally, I must lie among ravenous beasts. 00:09:29.620 --> 00:09:33.980 Who are these people? 00:09:35.980 --> 00:09:39.000 They're men whose teeth are spears and arrows. 00:09:39.379 --> 00:09:42.759 David's thinking about the 3,000 men outside the cave. 00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:43.740 They're armed. 00:09:43.740 --> 00:09:46.360 They're soldiers. 00:09:47.659 --> 00:09:50.539 But not just the spears and the arrows. 00:09:50.759 --> 00:09:53.060 He says, their tongues are sharp as swords. 00:09:53.799 --> 00:09:56.440 Most of them are just loyal servants of King Saul. 00:09:56.740 --> 00:10:00.519 But there are some of them who have been spreading lies about David. 00:10:00.860 --> 00:10:02.000 They've been slandering him. 00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:06.740 They've been painting this picture of him as a treacherous enemy. 00:10:07.519 --> 00:10:08.100 A traitor. 00:10:08.560 --> 00:10:11.980 Someone who's going to put the whole nation in danger. 00:10:11.980 --> 00:10:14.460 We must get him. 00:10:14.800 --> 00:10:17.000 We must eliminate him at all costs. 00:10:18.560 --> 00:10:20.680 Their tongues are sharp as swords. 00:10:20.820 --> 00:10:23.139 Their words are deadly to David. 00:10:24.820 --> 00:10:29.700 And so David finds himself with his back up against the wall, 00:10:29.860 --> 00:10:33.379 literally in this cave with his men. 00:10:34.080 --> 00:10:36.180 He's in a perilous situation. 00:10:37.340 --> 00:10:40.340 He cries out to the Lord in desperation. 00:10:40.340 --> 00:10:48.660 But what amazes me in this psalm is that it's not just desperation that we see and hear from David. 00:10:48.659 --> 00:11:00.759 We also hear David's heart, which is full of faith and expectation of what the Lord will do in this situation. 00:11:00.759 --> 00:11:04.120 And it starts right from the beginning. 00:11:04.120 --> 00:11:06.879 In verse 1, have mercy on me. 00:11:07.659 --> 00:11:08.919 Have mercy on me. 00:11:09.679 --> 00:11:12.799 For in you I take refuge. 00:11:13.799 --> 00:11:20.559 I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. 00:11:20.559 --> 00:11:22.559 Do you hear David's faith? 00:11:22.559 --> 00:11:23.539 Do you hear David's faith? 00:11:24.379 --> 00:11:30.019 Do you hear the expectation that God will care for him in this situation? 00:11:31.019 --> 00:11:34.099 There's another way that he could have phrased this. 00:11:34.179 --> 00:11:35.079 He could have said, 00:11:35.459 --> 00:11:41.500 Have mercy on me, my God, for in this cave I take refuge. 00:11:42.239 --> 00:11:47.579 I take refuge in this cave until the disaster has passed. 00:11:47.580 --> 00:11:48.759 But he doesn't say that. 00:11:50.020 --> 00:11:51.940 David's not trusting in the cave. 00:11:53.100 --> 00:12:00.500 He's not trusting in luck or chance that Saul and his men won't find them in the back. 00:12:55.500 I cry out to God, most high, to God who vindicates me. 00:12:57.379 --> 00:13:01.639 There's a little bit of difficulty with the Hebrew in this phrase. 00:13:02.259 --> 00:13:03.500 Other translations say, 00:13:03.700 --> 00:13:06.980 To God who fulfills his purpose for me. 00:13:06.980 --> 00:13:11.379 But either way, the sense is there that this is not the end. 00:13:12.580 --> wondering, 00:14:50.259 --> 00:14:51.780 what just happened here? 00:14:52.580 --> 00:14:53.879 In verse 6, he goes on, 00:14:53.960 --> 00:14:55.720 They spread a net for my feet. 00:14:56.220 --> then went 00:16:29.180 --> 00:16:30.419 and ran back 00:16:30.419 --> 00:16:31.820 into the darkness. 00:16:32.259 --> 00:16:33.960 And Saul left the cave 00:16:33.960 --> 00:16:35.300 not even
