at verse 16 it will also be up on our screen 00:00:16.559 --> 00:00:25.000 so we're reading the section in john 6 immediately after the feeding of the 5 000 00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:34.280 and actually i'll read verse 14 and 15 our screen begins at 16 but let me read there after the people 00:00:34.280 --> 00:00:41.039 saw the sign jesus performed they began to say surely this is the prophet who is to come into 00:00:41.039 --> 00:00:48.200 the world jesus knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force withdrew again to a 00:00:48.200 --> 00:00:54.980 mountain by himself when evening came his disciples went down to the lake where they got into a 00:00:54.979 --> 00:01:02.219 boat and set off across the lake for capernaum by now it was dark and jesus had not yet joined them 00:01:02.219 --> 00:01:08.439 a strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough when they had rowed about three or four miles 00:01:08.439 --> 00:01:14.620 they saw jesus approaching the boat have eternal life and i will raise them up at the last day amen this is god's 00:03:51.500 --> 00:04:01.699 word so i want us to begin for the next couple of months to think about the heart of jesus christ 00:04:01.699 --> 00:04:10.399 to see his heart in his public ministry as he faces the cross and after his resurrection to see his 00:04:10.399 --> 00:04:19.899 love in action to see the motivation of love um that leads him to serve and leads him to the cross 00:04:19.899 --> 00:04:25.959 and that's why we're in john chapter 6 and what i want us to notice from the beginning 00:04:25.959 --> 00:04:34.939 is that what we see in the crowds here is a reminder that as people we don't change and that 00:04:34.939 --> 00:04:43.000 as people we're still needing to find hope and we're looking for satisfaction so we have here 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:53.639 around jesus a crowd who have lived under roman rule for a number of years they have the hope that a 00:04:53.639 --> 00:05:00.039 messiah would come they have the promises of the old testament to give them support in that 00:05:00.039 --> 00:05:07.680 they had hope that a greater prophet than moses would come a greater king than david would come and for 00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:17.699 them that prospect of salvation it would be a political freedom life in the land free again 00:05:17.699 --> 00:05:27.719 our setting here is that jesus has just performed this miraculous sign of feeding the 5 000 and in 00:05:27.719 --> 00:05:34.259 verse 14 we heard their response to this surely this is the prophet who's to come into the world 00:05:34.259 --> 00:05:41.279 and so they read the sign and they have this expectation here is this one like moses who god 00:05:41.279 --> 00:05:49.219 has promised and their desire that follows from that verse 15 is that they want to make jesus king by force 00:05:49.219 --> 00:05:58.159 they want this political kingdom to come and then in verse 26 jesus also identifies another desire 00:05:58.159 --> 00:06:07.199 he says you're not looking for my signs you're coming because you ate the loaves and had your fill 00:06:07.199 --> 00:06:14.740 their wanting to be well fed their hopes are on the political and the physical level 00:06:14.740 --> 00:06:20.719 and i think it's fair to say that that's something that we can recognize today that's something that we see 00:06:20.719 --> 00:06:27.539 today lots of us are probably more engaged and interested in what's going on in the world of politics 00:06:27.539 --> 00:06:34.159 than perhaps we ever have been and there is this increasing hope and expectation being placed on our 00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:42.240 political leaders that that someone will be able to guide us through this pandemic and of course our 00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:49.640 current situation has us at the same time crying out for physical well-being as people we don't change 00:06:49.640 --> 00:06:56.500 we want to know that we can have a job and a job that's secure we want to have money to pay the bills 00:06:56.500 --> 00:07:02.560 and have food on the table we want to be sure that we can have social connections with friends and family 00:07:02.560 --> 00:07:08.259 and those won't be taken from us we want help for here and for now 00:07:08.259 --> 00:07:12.280 and so they're not so different from us 00:07:12.280 --> 00:07:17.720 and this is where the good news comes that the heart of jesus remains the same 00:07:17.720 --> 00:07:25.060 jesus the same yesterday today and forever what does he say to this crowd who are confused about his identity 00:07:25.060 --> 00:07:33.459 who have a variety of hopes in their hearts jesus says time and again in verse 35 to 40 00:07:33.459 --> 00:07:39.959 come to me come to me as the one who can address your deepest longings 00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:48.180 come to me as the one who can promise true salvation and security come to me as the one who invites you 00:07:48.180 --> 00:07:55.840 into eternal life and what jesus wants to show to this crowd and what jesus by extension wants to show to 00:07:55.840 --> 00:08:04.500 us is that sometimes our hopes are too small we find ourselves too easily satisfied 00:08:04.500 --> 00:08:13.220 when the loving heart of jesus wants to give us himself as the greatest gift he has to offer 00:08:13.220 --> 00:08:21.280 so we're going to be in verses 35 to 40 this morning the first thing i want to say is 00:08:21.280 --> 00:08:32.080 that here we find jesus saying come to me for lasting satisfaction in verses 35 and 36 jesus declared 00:08:32.080 --> 00:08:38.600 i am the bread of life whoever comes to me will never grow hungry and whoever believes in me 00:08:38.600 --> 00:08:45.700 will never be thirsty so he's in the middle of a conversation with this crowd that has gathered 00:08:45.700 --> 00:08:54.639 and he's has in verse 27 already been talking to them about food that endures to eternal life that the 00:08:54.639 --> 00:09:02.920 son of man will give you in verse 32 he talks about the true bread from heaven which comes as a gift 00:09:02.919 --> 00:09:10.799 from the father in verse 33 it's bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world from 00:09:10.799 --> 00:09:17.419 the father a gift that gives life he's talking about himself but there's misunderstanding at every point 00:09:17.419 --> 00:09:26.219 they see jesus but they don't see and understand his identity clearly and so they find themselves saying to 00:09:26.220 --> 00:09:31.580 jesus well moses we know moses he was the great prophet and he gave us manna in the wilderness 00:09:31.580 --> 00:09:40.180 to our ancestors what great miracle are you going to do to prove yourself they interpret his offer approval is on me i am the gift from god to sustain life but they don't see it 00:09:58.259 --> 00:10:09.359 so jesus in verse 35 begins to speak still more plainly with this great statement i am the people in jesus day bread was staple it was necessary an essential part 00:10:26.979 --> 00:10:33.639 of the diet jesus saying you cannot know god you cannot enjoy life with god without me without looking for a meal jesus is giving the promise of himself 00:10:50.019 --> 00:11:00.459 giving the reality of god to those who will receive what is he saying jesus is saying that to come to him candid autobiography and he said at one point he said 00:11:39.660 --> 00:11:46.740 this he said i marvel at how unexciting it is to be famous how mundane famous people are they're confused 00:11:46.740 --> 00:11:54.300 uncertain insecure and often hate what they do it's something we always hear like that old adage that 00:11:54.300 --> 00:12:02.460 money can't buy happiness but we never believe it until we see it ourselves super successful wealthy 00:12:02.460 --> 00:12:13.440 and unhappy is this all there is that's one way that that our longings find themselves in our hearts 00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:20.280 sometimes differently it's to do with a guilty conscience and a longing to find inner peace 00:12:20.280 --> 00:12:26.600 i was watching a little bit of the the netflix documentary the american gospel yesterday which a very 00:12:26.600 --> 00:12:33.940 helpful explanation of the true gospel over against the prosperity gospel and and on that section i was 00:12:33.940 --> 00:12:39.340 watching there was a former atheist who was very honest he was saying you know i had the american dream 00:12:39.340 --> 00:12:47.680 i had like beautiful house wife and the kids and the car and the holidays but i was crushed by a sense of guilt 00:12:47.680 --> 00:12:53.300 and i had nowhere to go with that until a crisis in their family 00:12:53.299 --> 00:12:58.620 turned him to the church and to the hope of the bible and to jesus 00:12:58.620 --> 00:13:04.179 so it might be a guilty conscience of wanting freedom and peace 00:13:04.179 --> 00:13:10.959 a deeper longing wondering why why do i yearn for something more have you ever had that even at that 00:13:10.959 --> 00:13:18.719 point where everything seems to be so good still that restlessness longing for something more 00:13:18.720 --> 00:13:26.399 to all of these and in that quest for satisfaction that we all experience in different ways jesus is 00:13:26.399 --> 00:13:34.920 saying come to me he is presenting himself as the end of the search as the goal of all our hearts desires 00:13:34.920 --> 00:13:41.680 jesus would say of the growing spiritual interest that we've seen in our country during lockdown 00:13:41.679 --> 00:13:49.239 i am the answer to that longing find me and find life and find satisfaction because in jesus as we 00:13:49.239 --> 00:13:55.419 discovered in the bible that's where we find forgiveness and freedom from guilt it's in jesus that 00:13:55.419 --> 00:14:01.039 we find reconciliation with the god we were made for made by and made for 00:14:01.039 --> 00:14:08.000 it's in and through jesus that we enjoy this living relationship with a god of love 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:15.659 that we have a relationship and a love that can never be broken it's through jesus we have the hope 00:14:15.659 --> 00:14:22.500 of eternity it's through jesus we have the hope that everyday life has meaning and purpose because 00:14:22.500 --> 00:14:30.379 everything we do we can do to the glory of god to love him to serve him and so there's this wonderful 00:14:30.379 --> 00:14:38.980 invitation from jesus to satisfaction and notice in verse 5 it's an open 00:15:20.879 worker this isn't just another great teacher this is none other than jesus the son of god who's become 00:15:20.879 --> 00:15:31.740 flesh to be our savior we need to recognize our needs of him to recognize our sin and our guilt and our 00:15:31.740 --> 00:15:39.460 inability to do anything of ourselves to fix that great problem and to respond to jesus in faith 00:15:39.460 --> 00:15:46.399 and that's where we find that satisfaction that our hearts are looking for 00:15:46.399 --> 00:15:56.299 now jesus goes on from there the second thing to notice is jesus says come to me for a secure 00:15:56.299 --> 00:16:09.279 salvation so here in bucclue we have a system of security with a couple of different safes through the back 00:16:09.279 --> 00:16:17.159 we have a big heavy thick metal one for the valuables and then we have the electronic key safe 00:16:17.159 --> 00:16:24.519 that gives you access so you need to have two combination codes to have access it's a wonderfully 00:16:24.519 --> 00:16:30.199 secure system until it all starts to go wrong which it has been doing for the last week or so but the 00:16:30.199 --> 00:16:36.519 principle is good that double security gives you peace of mind 00:16:36.519 --> 00:16:45.679 and here in the teaching of jesus he is presenting us with the security of salvation because he is 00:16:45.679 --> 00:16:51.819 saying to us look at the heart of god the father look at the heart of jesus the son and recognize that 00:16:51.819 --> 00:17:01.079 they are united in their determination to save sinners that commitment is where our sense of security 00:17:01.080 --> 00:17:10.120 and assurance comes from for lots of us this our prolonged lockdown and restrictions has probably 00:17:10.120 --> 00:17:16.660 probably been a time when spiritually it's been a struggle for us it's hard without that routine 00:17:16.660 --> 00:17:23.160 of church church we understand now is so important for keeping us and setting us back on track but it's 00:17:23.160 --> 00:17:30.460 been hard to read our bibles probably hard to pray missing a sense of fellowship and so maybe we feel 00:17:30.460 --> 00:17:40.200 our faith is weak at this point jesus would say to us in our weak faith remember it's the father's 00:17:40.200 --> 00:17:48.120 grip on you it's jesus grip on you that gives you security that's your hope for salvation so look with 00:17:48.120 --> 00:17:58.220 me at verses 37 to 39 first of all see jesus confidence in verse 37 when he says all those the father gives me 00:17:58.220 --> 00:18:06.700 will come to me his confidence there is that the father's saving purpose is unstoppable 00:18:06.700 --> 00:18:17.900 he says all all who the father gives me will come to me when god sets his love on an unbeliever 00:18:17.900 --> 00:18:26.539 rescue and salvation is certain as john calvin put it long ago grace is irresistible 00:18:26.539 --> 00:18:36.279 and jesus is pointing us to that for our assurance what's jesus confidence that god's saving plan will 00:18:36.279 --> 00:18:43.259 come to fruition his confidence isn't on human response his confidence rests in the father's 00:18:43.259 --> 00:18:50.779 redeeming love and power his hope rests in god's electing love we also see jesus heart 00:18:50.779 --> 00:19:03.180 verse 37 whoever comes to me i will never drive away notice jesus isn't inviting us to an institution 00:19:03.180 --> 00:19:10.279 he's not inviting us to a set of doctrines he's inviting us to himself he's inviting us to relationship 00:19:10.279 --> 00:19:18.460 with god the savior and what he promises that all those who have been gifted to him by his father 00:19:18.460 --> 00:19:28.960 will be kept safe jesus will lose none of his own he won't drive them not lose any of his own that jesus will certainly save his own the puritan 00:20:06.839 --> 00:20:13.039 thomas goodwin who wrote a book called the heart of christ which is an excellent read he says of this 00:20:13.039 --> 00:20:20.680 god has given jesus a perpetual command to save sinners therefore his heart continues the same 00:20:20.680 --> 00:20:27.500 forever and we see it as jesus talks about the father's will he also talks about his own will 00:20:27.500 --> 00:20:31.539 and jesus says my will is to do the will of him who sent me 00:20:31.539 --> 00:20:39.680 so here we have this wonderful situation where we have the loving heart of the lord jesus 00:20:39.680 --> 00:20:46.880 in his determination to do his father's will that takes him from the glory of heaven to become one of 00:20:46.880 --> 00:20:57.360 us and ultimately to go to the cross to die to save his people so when we think about christian assurance 00:20:57.360 --> 00:21:05.039 this is where we find it it's in the reality that god saves sinners by grace 00:21:05.039 --> 00:21:14.920 through faith alone here is this double security that we find in the gospel it's the double security 00:21:14.920 --> 00:21:23.759 of god the father and god the son being united together in one will committed to love and to save their own 00:21:23.759 --> 00:21:37.519 last thing to see from this little section jesus says come to me to enjoy eternal life 00:21:37.519 --> 00:21:47.240 in verse 40 for my father's will is that everyone who looks to the son and believes in him 00:21:47.240 --> 00:21:56.700 shall have eternal life and i will raise them up at the last day now you've maybe noticed as jesus has 00:21:56.700 --> 00:22:05.620 been speaking to the crowd that he's brought two themes of salvation together so he has spoken of our human 00:22:05.620 --> 00:22:14.620 responsibility in a variety of ways come to me believe in me verse 40 look to me but he's also at the 00:22:14.619 --> 00:22:23.299 same time spoken of god's sovereignty in salvation he's spoken of the father's will the reality that 00:22:23.299 --> 00:22:32.119 it's the father who plans initiates carries out and guarantees salvation jesus has no problem with 00:22:32.119 --> 00:22:39.419 holding these intention because they both hold true god is sovereign in saving sinners and we have a 00:22:39.420 --> 00:22:49.840 responsibility to respond to the offer of the gospel that we find in jesus so god's sovereign role here in 00:22:49.840 --> 00:22:57.300 verse 40 the father's will here in verse 40 is that everyone who looks to the son and believes in him shall 00:22:57.300 --> 00:23:06.960 have eternal life and it shall be raised up at the last day so that's the father's will that's the father's 00:23:06.960 --> 00:23:16.620 plan and we need to recognize that this requires the obedience of jesus the son that the father's will and the father's plan 00:23:16.620 --> 00:23:25.779 hinges on jesus being when jesus is speaking to nicodemus and just before we get to the most famous verse in the bible 00:24:06.400 --> 00:24:13.620 in john chapter 3 verse 14 jesus says this just as moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness 00:24:13.620 --> 00:24:23.860 so the son of man must be lifted up that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him so jesus uses 00:24:23.860 --> 00:24:29.460 that picture from the old testament so there's a time where israel was in the the wilderness and they 00:24:29.460 --> 00:24:35.900 were grumbling against god and as a response judgment came poisonous snakes came into the camp but then 00:24:35.900 --> 00:24:42.640 god by his grace made provision he told moses to make a bronze serpent and to put it on a pole 00:24:42.640 --> 00:24:52.860 and everyone who looked to the snake found healing and they lived and now here is jesus in john chapter 3 00:24:52.859 --> 00:24:58.339 saying that that bronze serpent raised in the pole that's a pointer to what i've come to do 00:24:58.339 --> 00:25:05.379 and i think we could argue that it's the same in john chapter 6 jesus saying look to me and live look to 00:25:05.379 --> 00:25:11.619 me as the cure to the the poison of sin leading to death that you find in your hearts and lives 00:25:11.619 --> 00:25:20.899 so here is jesus inviting us to life because he and he alone can deal with the poison of of sin 00:25:20.899 --> 00:25:32.339 that will destroy us if left unchecked how does sin work in our lives romans 1 is very helpful for 00:25:32.339 --> 00:25:41.439 laying it laying out for us sin works on our minds causing us to reject or suppress the truth about god 00:25:41.439 --> 00:25:48.179 it works in our hearts it works in our worship so that instead of worshiping god alone we choose 00:25:48.179 --> 00:25:56.639 to worship and live for created things rather than the creator sin affects our actions so that we can find 00:25:56.640 --> 00:26:04.580 ourselves in spirals of sinful rebellion against god and his law we reject his love to go our own way 00:26:04.580 --> 00:26:14.420 and the result of that sin left unchecked is death and not life is eternal condemnation and not the 00:26:14.420 --> 00:26:22.680 freedom that jesus offers so jesus here is offering hope he's offering the answer to the great problem that 00:26:22.680 --> 00:26:32.600 we all face he's extending an invitation to eternal life so here in john 6 to the crowd who are confused 00:26:32.600 --> 00:26:39.500 who have longings but they're physical and not spiritual jesus says i and i alone can give you the 00:26:39.500 --> 00:26:46.779 gift of eternal life and later on jesus would explain eternal life is something that begins now it's about 00:26:46.779 --> 00:26:54.720 life enjoying god knowing god knowing god the father and jesus the son but it's not just for now it also 00:26:54.720 --> 00:27:01.680 points us to the future to the great hope that we find in the bible of a perfect life in a perfect world 00:27:01.680 --> 00:27:09.660 filled with perfect relationships and as christians we need to use our imagination and we need to be 00:27:09.660 --> 00:27:16.840 future-orientated to recognize that yes there is suffering and struggle now but we are promised 00:27:16.840 --> 00:27:28.740 great hope imagine a world free of sickness and pandemic imagine a world without sadness 00:27:28.740 --> 00:27:36.620 and separation caused by death imagine a world of perfect peace and not division 00:27:36.619 --> 00:27:47.459 of absolute love and not hate of a life and a love that goes on forever where everything sad comes 00:27:47.459 --> 00:27:59.139 untrue and at the heart of that the joy of seeing jesus of having been made like jesus of enjoying his 00:27:59.139
