save us on the basis of what Jesus has done. 00:01:16.599 --> 00:01:24.539 The first and most obvious way of preparing for our retirement is putting our faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:26.879 --> 00:01:29.060 But that's not what I'm going to talk about this morning. 00:01:29.560 --> 00:01:30.579 Excuse me, this afternoon. 00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:40.519 We're not going to talk about how to get to heaven, but how to prepare for ourselves a future in heaven. 00:01:40.519 --> 00:01:45.840 You know, there's something that this parable teaches that is absolutely amazing. 00:01:46.679 --> 00:01:52.399 There's something that we can do right now which will affect our time in eternity. 00:01:52.679 --> 00:01:54.819 It will affect our reward in eternity. 00:01:55.319 --> 00:02:00.420 And it has to do with how we use our money right now. 00:02:00.420 --> 00:02:19.560 The amazing truth that Jesus teaches in this parable is that you and I can use our money here and now in a way that will ensure a wonderful welcome for us at the gates of heaven. 00:02:19.560 --> 00:02:23.620 You know, this is a parable that is rarely preached from. 00:02:24.259 --> 00:02:29.500 Maybe in all my years as a Christian, I've only heard maybe two or three sermons on this parable. 00:02:30.439 --> 00:02:34.960 And I think one of the reasons is because it does present some problems in interpretation. 00:02:35.560 --> 00:02:36.620 It's a puzzling parable. 00:02:37.379 --> 00:02:45.300 And what puzzles people is, is this dishonest man, is he commended for his dishonesty? 00:02:45.539 --> 00:02:47.500 How are we to interpret this parable? 00:02:47.500 --> 00:02:51.840 Of course, parables are a common way that Jesus teaches. 00:02:52.479 --> 00:02:54.960 They've been called earthly stories with heavenly meanings. 00:02:55.379 --> 00:03:00.080 They're a story from everyday life that illustrates a spiritual truth. 00:03:00.919 --> 00:03:09.719 But people get into trouble when they're interpreting parables when they try and press every detail of the parable to have a spiritual meaning. 00:03:10.139 --> 00:03:16.840 Usually in parables, Jesus has one point, one spiritual meaning, one spiritual truth he's trying to get across. 00:03:16.840 --> 00:03:21.460 And we don't need to press every detail to have a meaning or an interpretation. 00:03:21.939 --> 00:03:24.879 And we need to remember that as we look at this parable. 00:03:24.879 --> 00:03:34.519 How can you and I prepare for eternity? 00:03:35.519 --> 00:03:48.479 Not how we'll get to heaven, but how can we affect, influence, the reward, the reception that we will get when we get to heaven? 00:03:48.479 --> 00:03:50.639 We're going to divide this into four sections. 00:03:51.159 --> 00:03:53.939 The first is the plight of the dishonest manager. 00:03:54.539 --> 00:03:58.060 The second one is the scheme of the dishonest manager. 00:03:58.659 --> 00:04:04.819 The third one is the commendation of the dishonest manager by his master. 00:04:05.639 --> 00:04:10.419 And then the last point, the fourth point, is Jesus' application of the parable. 00:04:10.419 --> 00:04:11.959 So the first point is this. 00:04:12.319 --> 00:04:19.680 The plight of the dishonest manager, this is in verses 1 through 3, we're introduced to someone here who is called a manager. 00:04:20.519 --> 00:04:23.740 Older translations, they are called a steward. 00:04:24.579 --> 00:04:25.979 What is a steward? 00:04:26.519 --> 00:04:29.379 A steward in the ancient world was a business manager. 00:04:29.919 --> 00:04:31.060 You had a rich man. 00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:34.459 He had great estates, great agricultural holdings. 00:04:34.459 --> 00:04:42.000 This businessman, his estate produced olive oil and it produced wheat and these agricultural products were sold. 00:04:42.719 --> 00:04:46.740 But seemingly, this rich man lived at some distance from his estates. 00:04:47.240 --> 00:04:48.039 So what did he do? 00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:52.560 He had a steward, he had a business manager who would oversee his affairs. 00:04:53.859 --> 00:04:58.179 In other words, his estate was entrusted into the hands of his business manager. 00:04:58.179 --> 00:05:04.159 And his business manager would sell his agricultural commodities and collect the money. 00:05:04.459 --> 00:05:08.839 He was his representative in business transactions. 00:05:10.599 --> 00:05:14.539 The steward was entrusted with what belonged to the master. 00:05:14.899 --> 00:05:21.879 His estate, his wealth, but not for his own personal gain, but for the gain of the master. 00:05:23.199 --> 00:05:26.919 You know, there's an application here to you and me as Christians. 00:05:28.219 --> 00:05:32.560 We sustain exactly the same relationship to God. 00:05:32.560 --> 00:05:40.480 If you are a Christian, if you know the Lord Jesus Christ, you are a steward. 00:05:40.939 --> 00:05:42.639 God has entrusted things to you. he was simply a poor manager. 00:06:15.720 --> 00:06:19.079 Down in verse 8 he's called the dishonest manager. 00:06:19.459 --> 00:06:20.720 This man was a crook. 00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:28.300 We're not told exactly what he did, but in some way he used his position to defraud his master. 00:06:28.840 --> 00:06:30.940 To steal from his master. 00:06:32.980 --> 00:06:36.920 But, he's discovered by
