We've went over the 00:00:26.280 --> 00:00:33.560 titles of the Bible. You know, all of these names are so important and it's 00:00:33.560 --> 00:00:39.320 good for us as Christians to go over because it helps us with our 00:00:39.320 --> 00:00:44.960 understanding of God and understanding of His Word. And so just going over the 00:00:44.960 --> 00:00:50.680 the titles of the names of Scriptures that helps us just in our walk with the 00:00:50.679 --> 00:00:56.640 Lord. When we look at God's Word, we want to read, study, and just apply it to our 00:00:56.640 --> 00:01:03.759 lives. And I find what's so great about Scripture is where you're at in life, how 00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:08.799 God speaks to you through His Word. It may be different when you're a teenager 00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:13.560 than when you're, you know, 45 years old or whatever. Even if you're going through 00:01:13.560 --> 00:01:19.560 a, let's say it's a bad season or something, and then you're going through a 00:01:19.560 --> 00:01:24.519 good season. You read it again. So there's a lot of depth in there. Tonight, we're 00:01:24.519 --> 00:01:30.480 going to learn about the oracles of God and the holy Scriptures, which is also 00:01:30.480 --> 00:01:36.480 found in God's Word. So just so many different titles for Scripture. One of 00:01:36.480 --> 00:01:41.760 my favorites has been talking about the word of Christ having that dwell within 00:01:41.760 --> 00:01:48.520 us or the idea of the implanted word. When we talk about faith comes through 00:01:48.519 --> 00:01:54.519 hearing the word of God. It's like a seed that is planted within you and that seed 00:01:54.519 --> 00:02:00.359 will grow and you will have the grow in the knowledge of who God is to believe 00:02:00.359 --> 00:02:07.120 in the Lord. And then that same growing faith, if you will, that same seed will 00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:14.280 help you in your growth of with the Lord and knowing His Scripture as well. So 00:02:14.280 --> 00:02:18.479 what I want us to do, I want us to pray real quick and then we'll go ahead and 00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:25.199 get started with learning about the holy Scriptures and the oracles of God. You give 00:02:38.800 --> 00:02:46.920 us the ability to read, to study, and to apply your word to our lives. We know and 00:02:46.920 --> 00:02:52.439 or we should know that your word is truth and that your word is life and we'd 00:02:52.439 --> 00:02:57.880 rather be challenged with truth than to find something that's easy that's not 00:02:57.880 --> 00:03:04.720 truth. There's so much that we can learn from your word. So much that we can learn 00:03:04.719 --> 00:03:10.000 about who you are, learn about your son Jesus Christ and the wonderful biblical 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:16.719 insights that can just help us grow in you. It is in 00:03:35.159 --> 00:03:42.000 Jesus' name that we pray. Amen. So tonight we are in your notes. You'll see 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:46.479 that we are finishing up the just the titles and the names of Scripture. So 00:03:46.479 --> 00:03:54.039 it's finally, we finally gone through a big portion of them. There's some other 00:03:54.039 --> 00:03:59.239 ones in there but that's the main emphasis of this was going over the titles 00:03:59.239 --> 00:04:05.759 and the names of Scripture. And our first verse that we're going to go 00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:13.479 over is going to be on page 1116 in your ESVP Bibles. It's going to be 00:04:13.479 --> 00:04:25.159 Romans chapter 1 verses 1 through 2. So like we've done before we are going to 00:04:25.159 --> 00:04:31.680 go over the context. It's very important to know what is contextually going on in 00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:38.439 the Word of God but then also the connections that we find in Scripture. 00:04:38.439 --> 00:04:47.279 Okay so book of Romans. We'll just read chapter 1 verses 1 through 2 so just 00:04:47.279 --> 00:04:56.439 right at the beginning of Romans. So it says here Paul a servant of Christ Jesus 00:04:56.439 --> 00:05:03.399 called to be an apostle set apart for the gospel of God which he promised 00:05:03.399 --> 00:05:10.120 beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures. Alright so we're just 00:05:10.120 --> 00:05:13.079 going to stop right there. I know there's a lot more depth into that and 00:05:13.079 --> 00:05:20.639 Romans is one of the very very deep books that we can spend years on. There's 00:05:20.639 --> 00:05:27.000 one church I've known that has gone over over a hundred sermons going over 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:33.360 Romans so I realized there's a lot more into this but we're just going over 00:05:33.360 --> 00:05:41.199 those first two verses and when we're looking at these these two verses the 00:05:41.199 --> 00:05:46.959 first question that comes up is what do you think it means that Paul was set 00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:54.600 apart for the gospel of God? How might you also be set apart to share the good 00:05:54.600 --> 00:06:00.520 news of Jesus? Now granted I understand that Paul is addressing himself as the 00:06:00.520 --> 00:06:07.040 apostle but the idea of being set apart is something that we can look into. So 00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:12.800 take time to go ahead and write some thoughts or at least think about it or 00:06:12.800 --> 00:06:19.520 feel free to respond. I want to give you a couple moments as we go. We'll go 00:06:19.520 --> 00:06:24.080 into that. Yep it's a very good question. I wanted to ask it before we go 00:06:24.079 --> 00:06:28.800 further into it. It's just to kind of challenge you a little bit but it's 00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:36.439 definitely a good question. Are we called to be like Paul? Are we called? Because in 00:06:36.439 --> 00:06:42.120 the verse you're seeing here called to be an apostle, someone who's 00:06:42.120 --> 00:06:48.639 set apart for the gospel of God. So would that mean being set apart as being 00:06:48.639 --> 00:06:55.519 an apostle or perhaps for the gospel of God? Well we start off these first 00:06:55.519 --> 00:07:01.000 two verses right. We have Paul who's addressing himself as the servant of 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:06.120 Jesus Christ. Some translations would say bond servant or slave but he's saying 00:07:06.120 --> 00:07:13.079 he is establishing his apostleship. One who is used to serve the Lord right. He 00:07:13.079 --> 00:07:19.879 is serving his giving his life and his dedication for the cause of Christ and it 00:07:19.879 --> 00:07:26.199 goes on making mention that he is called specifically to be an apostle. So the word 00:07:26.199 --> 00:07:31.639 apostle is defined in the Greek as an ambassador of the gospel. I found that 00:07:31.639 --> 00:07:36.879 definition to be really good right being an ambassador for the good news. One who 00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:43.000 has been commissioned to be a delicate. Yeah so there's the it's being 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:50.560 specifically called forth by God right. So when you're looking up the Greek 00:07:50.560 --> 00:07:54.199 definition there's certain definitions that are very easy. Okay well we should 00:07:54.199 --> 00:08:00.040 all be ambassadors of God or we should all we should be delegates but the 00:08:00.040 --> 00:08:04.439 specific thing that's different with apostleship is being appointed by the 00:08:04.439 --> 00:08:12.160 Lord if you will. So then there's this idea of being set apart. Now being set 00:08:12.160 --> 00:08:18.600 apart is being defined as someone who is appointed by the Lord right. So there's 00:08:18.600 --> 00:08:25.319 that nice little connection with apostleship and being set apart. So Paul 00:08:25.319 --> 00:08:30.480 is going off with the establishment of his God given authority that God had 00:08:30.480 --> 00:08:36.600 appointed him to be an apostle. Paul has been chosen to serve the Lord and to be 00:08:36.600 --> 00:08:40.720 that ambassador for Christ. I know that there's some Christians that I know who 00:08:40.720 --> 00:08:45.800 love using that same similar kind of language of being an ambassador for 00:08:45.800 --> 00:08:49.920 Christ being a representation if you will when you're living and I think 00:08:49.920 --> 00:08:54.600 that's fine but that certainly would be a little a little bit more a little 00:08:54.600 --> 00:08:59.879 different than what we're talking here specifically with Paul's apostleship. So 00:08:59.879 --> 00:09:07.679 then you see the language of the gospel of God. Now this language the gospel of 00:09:07.679 --> 00:09:12.919 God is saying that it's the when we think of the gospel we're thinking of the 00:09:12.919 --> 00:09:18.279 good news that comes from God. Well what is the good news right? The good news of 00:09:18.279 --> 00:09:25.039 God is the revelation it is the redemption the telling of Jesus Christ. 00:09:25.039 --> 00:09:31.279 Okay because when you're looking contextually in these first two verses 00:09:31.279 --> 00:09:38.919 you see later on the prophets in the holy scriptures promising beforehand 00:09:38.919 --> 00:09:43.439 then you have the gospel God. So there's like this separation between the Old 00:09:43.439 --> 00:09:48.159 Testament and the New Testament if you will and I found that to be very 00:09:48.159 --> 00:09:53.719 interesting that we see that there is that separation there and as we have 00:09:53.720 --> 00:09:58.480 previously gone over in our study we talked about the mystery of Christ and 00:09:58.480 --> 00:10:04.120 the mystery of the gospel where the Lord was hiding the coming of Jesus Christ. 00:10:04.120 --> 00:10:09.160 God had to hide the coming forth of his son so that the prophecy could be 00:10:09.160 --> 00:10:14.960 fulfilled and I always think that's very interesting that why didn't God just 00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:19.040 reveal it just immediately well there had to have been the divine appointment 00:10:19.039 --> 00:10:23.879 the time frame in which how everything would play out. When we think of God 00:10:23.879 --> 00:10:29.279 being outside of time and space I know that's very hard for us to wrap our 00:10:29.279 --> 00:10:34.399 minds around because we like timelines we think of being in one place at once 00:10:34.399 --> 00:10:40.360 but God existing outside of that when he's putting his hand into time if you 00:10:40.360 --> 00:10:46.679 will it's all setting how Christ would come into motion so there's things that 00:10:46.679 --> 00:10:53.519 were hidden to the to the Jewish people they didn't know about what was being 00:10:53.519 --> 00:10:59.679 foretold they might have known about specific prophecies but it was hidden 00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:05.039 until the appropriate time right the specific time where Christ would be 00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:10.399 born to fulfill prophecy so that's something it's definitely a harder one 00:11:10.399 --> 00:11:18.199 but we know biblically that yes Jesus Christ had to be hidden if you will but 00:11:18.199 --> 00:11:24.559 eventually revealed and we are blessed to know about the good news of the gospel 00:11:24.559 --> 00:11:32.240 or the in this sense the gospel of God and since Christ came Paul's mission 00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:38.519 right is to tell the world about Jesus Christ right he's being appointed by God 00:11:38.519 --> 00:11:46.240 to spread to tell the world about Jesus Christ that salvation is free to all who 00:11:46.240 --> 00:11:53.639 believe so this good news is life-changing to all who hear it to be 00:11:53.639 --> 00:12:01.740 appointed by God to go out into the world and to tell the good news or to be 00:12:01.740 --> 00:12:06.600 given specific spiritual gifts when you think of those who are called to be 00:12:06.600 --> 00:12:10.480 pastors or those who are called to be evangelists or those who are called to 00:12:10.480 --> 00:12:16.000 be teachers I always have found it very interesting that if you neglect that 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:21.560 that's not a good thing that God will eventually lead you to certain things I 00:12:21.560 --> 00:12:28.680 know in my own story there were times where I was I don't know if God really 00:12:28.680 --> 00:12:32.759 wants to call me into just ministry at all there were times where I was 00:12:32.759 --> 00:12:41.120 discouraged or times where let's just say leaders failed me but the lesson I 00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:49.840 had to learn is that leaders can and sometimes they will fail you but God 00:12:49.840 --> 00:12:54.600 doesn't fail you and it took me a very long time to realize that but I'm glad 00:12:54.600 --> 00:13:03.320 that over time I did because we shouldn't put our trust in a specific person 00:13:03.320 --> 00:13:08.480 like a human a normal everyday human but rather our trust should be on Jesus 00:13:08.480 --> 00:13:16.200 Christ and I think you know I think a great deal of Pontius Pilate when he 00:13:16.200 --> 00:13:21.879 asks the question what is truth and he doesn't stay long enough to find the 00:13:21.879 --> 00:13:26.799 answer out you know because Christ could have answered but he does go out and say 00:13:26.799 --> 00:13:31.799 I see no wrong that this man did and tries to have him released so a light 00:13:31.799 --> 00:13:36.159 bulb did go off but I whenever I've read that I've kind of wanted Christ to be 00:13:36.159 --> 00:13:47.360 like hello you know I am the truth you know but it's just even even when even 00:13:47.360 --> 00:13:53.399 if you neglect God's call for your life God will work on your heart God will work 00:13:53.399 --> 00:14:00.000 on you and I have found that when you follow God's call there's a lot of peace 00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:05.120 that comes through it there's a lot of there's a lot of know going back to our verse and with the 00:14:13.940 --> 00:14:21.400 Apostle Paul God had called him right God calls us to different capacities he 00:14:21.400 --> 00:14:27.280 calls us with obviously the Lord calls us all to know him to have that 00:14:27.280 --> 00:14:33.360 relationship to believe in the Lord Jesus what specifically God calls us to 00:14:33.360 --> 00:14:39.760 do upon is the revelation 00:15:09.839 --> 00:15:14.519 of Jesus Christ coming into the world and that verse is saying he promised 00:15:14.519 --> 00:15:22.359 beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures and something that we 00:15:22.359 --> 00:15:26.439 can take away in all of this kind of piggybacking off of what we've been 00:15:26.439 --> 00:15:32.199 talking about is that our God is consistent and our God is constant he 00:15:32.200 --> 00:15:39.520 doesn't change we do our culture changes right if we think of you know 00:15:39.520 --> 00:15:44.920 scientific discoveries or we think of what was acceptable in culture at one 00:15:44.920 --> 00:15:50.040 time period is not acceptable to another is something that is pretty crazy 00:15:50.040 --> 00:15:55.680 right you see 00:16:23.519 --> 00:16:29.519 counts of Jesus Christ and there is a similarity that we find with the holy 00:16:29.519 --> 00:16:35.120 scriptures and just the word scripture when you're seeing holy scriptures it's 00:16:35.120 --> 00:16:41.360 the emphasis on the divine inspiration that comes from the Lord right when we 00:16:41.360 --> 00:16:47.199 think of just scripture it's talking about the Old Testament I want us to turn 00:16:47.199 --> 00:16:53.039 there's gonna be two verses we're gonna turn to the first one is gonna be Matthew 00:16:53.039 --> 00:17:00.319 21 42 it's gonna be page 983 00:17:09.680 --> 00:17:21.639 Matthew 21 42 Jesus said to them have you not read in the scriptures the stone 00:17:21.640 --> 00:17:26.960 that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone this was the Lord's doing 00:17:26.960 --> 00:17:35.840 and it is marvelous in our eyes so here we have it's right after the you have the 00:17:35.840 --> 00:17:40.080 parable of the two sons and the parable of the tenants right so Jesus is 00:17:40.080 --> 00:17:47.280 mentioning the scriptures right the Old Testament if you will the Pentateuch even 00:17:47.279 --> 00:18:01.160 then we go on into John chapter 5 John chapter 5 39 I'll put that on the screen 00:18:01.160 --> 00:18:16.639 so John 5 39 this is when Jesus is speaking to the speaking to the 00:18:16.640 --> 00:18:23.759 Pharisees you search the scriptures because you think that in in them you 00:18:23.759 --> 00:18:30.120 have eternal life and it is they that bear witness about me yet you refuse to 00:18:30.120 --> 00:18:36.080 come to me that you may have life so it's this talking about there's the 00:18:36.080 --> 00:18:44.120 mentioning of scriptures right searching the scriptures they point to Jesus or what stands out to you about the way 00:19:19.079 --> 00:19:26.319 Jesus quoted and referred to scripture in Matthew 21 42 and John chapter 5 verse 00:19:26.319 --> 00:19:32.700 39 what can we learn from his example here so I want us to think about these 00:19:32.700 --> 00:19:44.279 two verses take a moment to reflect right or say what comes to mind when you 00:19:44.279 --> 00:19:56.360 get so caught up in rituals or rules right you can get think of the energy 00:19:56.360 --> 00:20:01.840 that you put into something right when you're putting so much energy into 00:20:01.839 --> 00:20:07.299 woodworking or energy into quilting or energy into working out you eventually 00:20:07.299 --> 00:20:10.539 get to a point where this is the way things have to be done and there's no looking at 00:20:22.500 --> 00:20:32.180 it but the Pharisees had had been stuck in their way so much that even when Jesus 00:20:32.180 --> 00:20:37.380 is pointing it out to them they still rejected and and how interesting is that 00:20:37.380 --> 00:20:44.380 it's no different than even the disciples of Christ when you think about 00:20:44.380 --> 00:20:50.140 Peter out in the sea right when Jesus is walking on water and I think of the old 00:20:50.140 --> 00:20:55.060 the cartoons or the old videos where he's sinking out in sea right and then 00:20:55.060 --> 00:21:00.300 Jesus is pulling him up and Jesus is asking well why did you doubt well I 00:21:00.300 --> 00:21:05.700 mean that's you that's your own disciple what yet there's still that doubt or when 00:21:05.700 --> 00:21:14.740 Peter is denying Jesus or when Thomas is doubting you have all of these I think 00:21:14.740 --> 00:21:22.940 that's just people you know we all have I think we get set in our ways at times 00:21:22.940 --> 00:21:33.420 what is it it's in John where he heals the Jesus heals the blind man and the 00:21:33.420 --> 00:21:40.099 Pharisees are asking the parents what is it that has happened and the parents 00:21:40.099 --> 00:21:48.139 say ask him he can speak for himself he's an adult and the reason why they 00:21:48.139 --> 00:21:54.459 did that is because if they had spoken on their kids accord they would have been 00:21:54.459 --> 00:21:59.740 kicked out of the synagogue which is very interesting there's a similarity 00:21:59.740 --> 00:22:05.219 that we can see and unfortunately even in churches you don't dress a certain 00:22:05.219 --> 00:22:09.740 way you're not welcome in this church you don't behave a certain way how is that 00:22:09.740 --> 00:22:15.740 any different than the Pharisees saying if you believe this certain thing or if 00:22:15.740 --> 00:22:21.099 you whatever it is you're not allowed to come in so I would say they're more 00:22:21.099 --> 00:22:30.579 focused on their religion their tradition their structured belief system if 00:22:30.579 --> 00:22:37.980 you will that they when truth is being revealed to them they don't want it you 00:22:37.980 --> 00:22:45.420 know what I like the law right when when you search the scriptures because you 00:22:45.420 --> 00:22:48.740 think in them you have eternal life which is a very hard verse in of itself 00:22:48.740 --> 00:22:56.579 right well we find we can have eternal life in belief about Jesus but to search 00:22:56.579 --> 00:23:02.980 the scriptures thinking that they have context of these verses it's talking about the Old Testament right the prophets 00:23:25.820 --> 00:23:31.980 the Pentateuch but we can also read when scripture is mentioned or holy 00:23:31.980 --> 00:23:38.860 scriptures it can also mean the entirety of our Bible in any case though 00:23:38.860 --> 00:23:44.460 these verses should help us with our faith in understanding and I think this 00:23:44.460 --> 00:23:49.259 is a very critical point that the Old Testament should not be a book that is 00:23:49.259 --> 00:23:55.660 neglected or overlooked it is something that should be studied it is something 00:23:55.660 --> 00:24:02.700 that helps us understand how things were done compared to how things are a big 00:24:02.700 --> 00:24:09.460 example is and what actually I'll bring this up a little bit later is Levitical 00:24:09.460 --> 00:24:15.460 priests where you had to offer sacrifice right to atone for your sins if you will 00:24:15.460 --> 00:24:22.180 well in Hebrews it mentions that Christ was the high priest so to speak and 00:24:22.180 --> 00:24:28.220 there was the once for all sacrifice so there's no longer a need for Levitical 00:24:28.220 --> 00:24:33.180 priests and we find that in scripture and so in order to understand that though 00:24:33.180 --> 00:24:39.500 we have to know what do you mean the high priest if like if you completely cut 00:24:39.500 --> 00:24:44.100 out the Old Testament and you read that that Jesus is okay he's becoming the 00:24:44.100 --> 00:24:48.019 high priest and that he died for our sins okay well I don't understand what 00:24:48.019 --> 00:24:52.579 high priest means you have to have that context that connection that's found with 00:24:52.579 --> 00:24:59.980 the Old Testament so the entirety of the Bible it all of the books it's helpful 00:24:59.980 --> 00:25:04.539 for us in understanding who God is and the growing of our faith we need to 00:25:04.539 --> 00:25:10.180 establish what matters first and foremost is having faith in Jesus Christ by 00:25:10.180 --> 00:25:16.339 believing in him and receiving the gift of salvation this gift is free for all 00:25:16.339 --> 00:25:21.419 who believe and just like how Paul is sold out for Christ he wishes to tell 00:25:21.419 --> 00:25:27.539 the world of the gospel of God we too should be encouraged to share in the 00:25:27.539 --> makes the Bible elevated and we should always look at scripture as unlike any 00:26:26.579 --> 00:26:31.099 other book that we have we think of Shakespeare we think of science books 00:26:31.099 --> 00:26:35.779 textbooks I mean I have a big accounting book that I'm not studying right now but 00:26:35.779 --> 00:26:39.859 I needed something hard to write on we have all of these different books with 00:26:39.859 --> 00:26:44.339 information but it's very different than the knowledge that we receive from God 00:26:44.339 --> 00:26:50.819 the wisdom that we receive from God the divine insights the learning about Jesus 00:26:50.819 --> 00:26:56.819 Christ and his life his death his burial his resurrection all of that so we 00:26:56.819 --> 00:26:59.699 went over that verse in the very scriptures because the writer was using 00:28:18.299 --> 00:28:23.379 the KJV and there is a discrepancy well maybe that's the wrong word there's a 00:28:23.380 --> 00:28:29.420 difference in translation for that wording for childhood being acquainted 00:28:29.420 --> 00:28:35.780 with sacred writings now when you see in verse 16 how all scripture is breathed 00:28:35.780 --> 00:28:43.060 slightly different but at the end of the 00:29:27.940 --> 00:29:35.059 day it's I would say it's really the same thing it's referencing the Old 00:29:35.059 --> 00:29:39.619 Testament at that point so how he's because when he's writing to Timothy how 00:29:39.619 --> 00:29:43.740 from childhood you've been acquainted with we would call it the holy 00:29:43.740 --> 00:29:47.380 scriptures I think that's very accurate so another way to call it would be you've 00:29:47.380 --> 00:29:51.099 been trained with the sacred writings so it's just kind of another way of saying 00:29:51.099 --> 00:29:59.460 it's just a kind of an odd word that's being used here let me go to the so the 00:29:59.460 --> 00:30:04.220 question I had on here is in what ways is scripture able to make us wise but 00:30:04.220 --> 00:30:13.339 hold on to that question before we go into that yeah the ESV is saying sacred 00:30:13.339 --> 00:30:22.019 writings but regardless it's still referencing the Old Testament so how you 00:30:22.019 --> 00:30:29.419 translate that it's still mentioning the Old Testament it's just not the same 00:30:29.419 --> 00:30:34.099 exact word so I'm thinking the reason why they're doing that is because it's 00:30:34.099 --> 00:30:40.099 not the same consistent scripture word that's been used as the other ones yeah 00:30:40.099 --> 00:30:44.859 because there is a it's a separation between the entirety of scripture and 00:30:44.859 --> 00:30:50.859 and the way that's written if it lets assume it's holy scripture well that 00:30:50.859 --> 00:30:54.379 would be the same as saying the Old Testament right as we've been talking 00:30:54.379 --> 00:30:58.619 about if it's sacred writings well he would just be saying these are the 00:30:58.619 --> 00:31:03.099 sacred writings of the prophets it's just another way of saying that when 00:31:03.099 --> 00:31:06.299 you're going into verse 16 when it's talking about all of scripture that 00:31:06.299 --> 00:31:10.259 00:31:24.059 --> 00:31:29.700 Hebrew language so I did want to point that out I think that's a big reason why 00:31:29.700 --> 00:31:34.700 I make mention that we shouldn't neglect we should not neglect the Old 00:31:34.700 --> 00:31:38.900 Testament because when even though we're living in the New Testament time 00:31:38.900 --> 00:31:46.180 where let's say post Christ's death and resurrection I don't like using post so 00:31:46.180 --> 00:31:53.660 much but after the fulfillment of prophecy that doesn't invalidate I know 00:31:53.660 --> 00:31:58.700 there's the verse that says when Christ said I did not come to abolish the law 00:31:58.700 --> 00:32:06.100 but to fulfill it right well we're not looking at the Old Testament as something 00:32:06.100 --> 00:32:10.100 we 00:35:02.659 part but before I go any further are any of us pressed on time so oracles of God 00:35:02.659 --> 00:35:10.300 it only shows up three times in the Bible now the word oracles shows up four 00:35:10.300 --> 00:35:17.380 times in the Bible but I'm going to specifically focus on oracles of God three 00:35:17.380 --> 00:35:22.619 times in the Bible and they should all be in your notes Romans chapter 3 verse 00:35:22.619 --> 00:35:35.500 2 Hebrews chapter 5 verse 12 and 1 Peter chapter 4 verse 11 so I want us to go 00:35:35.500 --> 00:35:46.779 ahead and turn to Romans chapter 3 verse 2 it's going to be page 1118 and we'll 00:35:46.780 --> 00:35:55.420 just begin with verse 1 all right here we go Romans chapter 3 then what 00:35:55.420 --> 00:36:02.019 advantage has the Jew or what is the value of circumcision oh that's a tough 00:36:02.019 --> 00:36:09.460 question to ask right much in every way to begin with the Jews were entrusted 00:36:09.460 --> 00:36:17.900 with the oracles of God okay so that's where we see oracles so what 00:36:17.900 --> 00:36:25.099 significance does the word oracles have in referring to the word of God why is 00:36:25.099 --> 00:36:28.539 this an important descriptor before we go any further I want to ask that question 00:36:28.539 --> 00:36:35.059 take a moment and think about this question it's defined as an utterance 00:36:35.059 --> 00:36:42.940 a utterance yeah it's something that is spoken so that's your hint but we'll go 00:36:42.940 --> 00:36:46.779 further into it I just wanted to see if initially there's anything that comes to 00:36:46.779 --> 00:36:51.619 mind when we're talking about oracles I know there's a company out there named 00:36:51.619 --> 00:37:02.820 oracle and then oracles you might hear it more in 00:37:02.820 --> 00:37:10.660 antiquity like Greek mythology or Roman mythology so it's unusual to find it in 00:37:10.660 --> 00:37:14.580 scripture though but there's a reason for it and it's very interesting so yeah 00:37:14.580 --> 00:37:20.900 take a moment and just so when we're looking at this verse Paul is asking 00:37:20.900 --> 00:37:27.620 the question right in verse 1 about what the advantage the Jews had and he 00:37:27.619 --> 00:37:33.539 answers this question by saying that the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of 00:37:33.539 --> 00:37:43.539 God so the oracles so think about that God giving something entrusting the 00:37:43.539 --> 00:37:48.739 oracles what are what are the oracles it's defined as the utterances of God or 00:37:48.739 --> 00:37:54.539 the words that are spoken by God what you'll find very interesting is that 00:37:54.539 --> 00:38:02.539 oracles are talking specifically about divine messages revelations or word to 00:38:02.539 --> 00:38:10.019 God's people doesn't this sound very very similar to something else to perhaps 00:38:10.019 --> 00:38:16.019 the word in the beginning was the word does that sound sounds very similar 00:38:16.019 --> 00:38:25.059 right so what it is is the difference between logos and logea 00:38:25.059 --> 00:38:34.219 logei a as opposed to logos or logos logea or logea and depending on who you 00:38:34.219 --> 00:38:44.340 ask very similar words so logos we've gone over previously has to do with the 00:38:44.340 --> 00:38:48.579 word right in the beginning was the word and the word was with God right we 00:38:48.579 --> 00:38:54.059 learned about the word became flesh right we learned about the word of Christ 00:38:54.059 --> 00:39:01.460 Christ being the word well this is slightly different the logea right this 00:39:01.460 --> 00:39:08.780 the I'll just say the oracles the oracles is more of a broad term that 00:39:08.780 --> 00:39:15.300 speaks of the things that have been said the more of the messages that have come 00:39:15.300 --> 00:39:22.660 from God the words they're spoken from God so it's similar but they're not the 00:39:22.660 --> 00:39:29.260 same so when we're thinking of oracles versus the word the word is more 00:39:29.260 --> 00:39:34.620 specific to Christ the oracles would be more of like the sayings of old the 00:39:34.619 --> 00:39:40.019 sayings of God the divine inspiration if you will so it's a more of a broad 00:39:40.019 --> 00:39:49.579 overview so historically oracle has been like I was mentioning antiquity right 00:39:49.579 --> 00:39:55.900 the oracles of what did Zeus say right or what did another God say so it's more 00:39:55.900 --> 00:40:01.259 of that kind of language that was used so I find it to be very interesting that 00:40:01.260 --> 00:40:10.980 that word is being used especially I mean when we're looking at the fact that 00:40:10.980 --> 00:40:19.020 this is written the book of Romans being written to Rome right so you have to 00:40:19.020 --> 00:40:24.500 think part of the audience would be the Romans who worshiped other gods so using 00:40:24.500 --> 00:40:31.140 the word oracles would make a lot of sense so these are words that are spoken 00:40:31.139 --> 00:40:37.339 and words that are divine that come from God the sayings of God so the oracles 00:40:37.339 --> 00:40:42.219 of God in this sense right like I said they are divine words that come from God 00:40:42.219 --> 00:40:48.619 and they were entrusted to the Jewish people and what a privilege it must be 00:40:48.619 --> 00:40:54.900 to have the words that are spoken that were written down into the holy 00:40:54.900 --> 00:41:01.180 scriptures if you will what a blessing that must be to have that and at that 00:41:01.180 --> 00:41:07.420 time in the Old Testament the Jews had access to that but then that goes into 00:41:07.420 --> 00:41:12.539 the mystery of Christ Christ being revealed the mystery of the gospel that 00:41:12.539 --> 00:41:18.780 it is no longer hidden but it is now open and available for all who believe so 00:41:18.780 --> 00:41:25.580 it's just a wonderful connection with the Old Testament to the New Testament and 00:41:25.580 --> 00:41:28.540 as we go so there's a couple more verses because I want to show you the 00:41:28.540 --> 00:41:33.660 oracles of God as there's only three verses total I want us to keep in mind 00:41:33.660 --> 00:41:41.860 that these are they're speaking of God's words right but it's different than the 00:41:41.860 --> 00:41:47.540 word of God this is more of the sayings right this is more of the words of God 00:41:47.539 --> 00:41:53.579 messages divine revelation so I want us to turn to our next verse it's going to 00:41:53.579 --> 00:42:16.139 --> 00:42:24.339 chapter 5 verse 12 for by this time you ought to be teachers you need someone to 00:42:24.339 --> 00:42:32.259 teach you again the basic principles of what of the oracles of God is that 00:42:32.259 --> 00:42:37.739 consistent is that what all of our translations say the oracles of God you 00:42:37.739 --> 00:42:45.019 need milk not solid food now you've heard me mention in sermons about how going 00:42:45.019 --> 00:42:50.139 from milk to solid food from being a baby Christian to becoming learning the 00:42:50.139 --> 00:42:56.500 deeper things of God and his word and I'm gonna put a question up here but I 00:42:56.500 --> 00:43:01.820 just want to say this much it's very interesting how in the context of this 00:43:01.820 --> 00:43:08.860 Hebrews passage of why you're going from milk to solid food right typically it's 00:43:08.860 --> 00:43:13.900 oh you're a new Christian you need milk of the word then you're gonna grow but 00:43:13.900 --> 00:43:22.059 for this one it's more like a rebuke you need someone to teach you again the 00:43:22.059 --> 00:43:27.180 basic principles right we need to go over it with you again so the question 00:43:27.180 --> 00:43:32.660 that comes up is why do you think the writer of Hebrews emphasizes going back 00:43:32.660 --> 00:43:36.539 to the oracles of God I kind of gave you a little bit of an answer but want to 00:43:36.539 --> 00:43:42.780 ask you around for those who are struggling spiritually what should this 00:43:42.780 --> 00:43:49.940 teach us so take a moment and write in your when I talk about other churches I'm not 00:44:02.460 --> 00:44:10.019 criticizing them okay you have some churches that are focusing on the basics 00:44:10.019 --> 00:44:15.219 right come to the Lord Jesus make a decision for Christ that is the most 00:44:15.219 --> 00:44:20.619 important thing about us as churches what about growing in Christ what about 00:44:20.619 --> 00:44:26.300 learning about what it means to be a Christian I really like the I think it's 00:44:26.300 --> 00:44:31.539 Rick Warren that has the book that says I'm a Christian now what right it's at 00:44:31.539 --> 00:44:43.500 --> 00:44:47.819 number of churches out there that they focus on everyone making a decision for 00:44:47.819 --> 00:44:54.940 Christ rightfully so but they stop there and they focus on well let's let's just 00:44:54.940 --> 00:44:59.019 bring in as many people as possible or let's mobilize people to go serve the 00:44:59.019 --> 00:45:04.500 community these things are fine but there has to be depth in what you do 00:45:04.500 --> 00:45:10.980 there has to be what you don't want is you know when you hear people talk about 00:45:10.980 --> 00:45:15.219 I know a lot of people like to talk about false teachers and false theology 00:45:15.219 --> 00:45:21.179 and whatnot but if you teach your congregation the word of God do you 00:45:21.179 --> 00:45:25.460 really think you'd been to a church that has preached on 00:46:24.940 --> 00:46:35.099 song of Solomon think about that okay all right all right so okay we got one 00:46:35.099 --> 00:46:44.659 which is a great praise God but Ecclesiastes Job like why are these not 00:46:44.659 --> 00:46:48.500 taught now I know song of Solomon is a very very difficult book I understand 00:46:48.500 --> 00:46:55.980 that I'm not denying that I'd like to go over it one day but the thing is most 00:46:55.980 --> 00:46:59.300 churches are teaching the Gospels which is fine and I like I said I'm not 00:46:59.300 --> 00:47:04.539 criticizing them for doing that it's what is the consequence of not going more 00:47:04.539 --> 00:47:10.579 in-depth in the Word of God I encourage every church I go to whether I 00:47:10.579 --> 00:47:17.019 whether I'm a pastor or whether I'm just a congregant is have a church that is 00:47:17.019 --> 00:47:21.420 what you're about learning the Word of God learning a truth of scripture how to 00:47:21.420 --> 00:47:26.940 defend the Word of God how to share in your faith those kind of things it's 00:47:26.940 --> 00:47:32.820 not just about oh let's have the latest and greatest rock show let's have the 00:47:32.820 --> 00:47:41.579 fog machines and and lasers and it's not all about that you know it's knowing 00:47:41.579 --> 00:47:48.860 the you got to know the book you got to and he began an 00:48:44.099 --> 00:48:48.779 organization called the discipleship journeys with Jesus specifically because 00:48:48.779 --> 00:48:54.139 it is such a problem for churches to have discipleship programs that he created 00:48:54.139 --> 00:48:59.779 an entire ministry translating in different languages you know Zulu or 00:48:59.780 --> 00:49:04.260 Spanish or Korean and all these different languages so that churches can use it as 00:49:04.260 --> 00:49:11.100 a resource for discipleship well I love what he's doing but at the same time I'm 00:49:11.100 --> 00:49:17.780 like do you realize why he made that it's because there's not depth in teaching 00:49:17.780 --> 00:49:23.980 which is a very unfortunate thing and then I just the whole idea is for us to 00:49:23.980 --> 00:49:27.860 be mature we can minister to others we can discern what is right and wrong there's 00:49:27.860 --> 00:49:31.300 a lot of benefits in knowing the word of God that's a big reason why you want to 00:49:31.300 --> 00:49:37.660 have scripture speak for itself it's why you focus on the I keep saying this the 00:49:37.660 --> 00:49:41.980 context and the connections you need to have those things in place you don't 00:49:41.980 --> 00:49:48.539 want to just pull things out of a hat a great example is when scripture says all 00:49:48.539 --> 00:49:54.660 things are permissible well up and says all things are permissible because it is in scripture 00:50:09.619 --> 00:50:16.859 if you cherry pick that you could be leading someone down a very very wrong 00:50:16.859 --> 00:50:22.819 path what is that first Corinthians chapter 10 verse 20 thing 23 all things 00:50:22.820 --> 00:50:27.260 are lawful but not all things are helpful all things are lawful but not all
