WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.259 Take your Bibles this morning toward the book of 1 Thessalonians, 1 Thessalonians this morning. 00:00:05.020 --> 00:00:05.339 ! 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:32.359 Looking at a thankful ministry. 00:00:32.619 --> 00:00:37.119 Paul was thankful for many things that took place there at Thessalonica. 00:00:37.119 --> 00:00:43.280 Even though he was there just a short time, just a few days really, not even a full month he was there. 00:00:43.380 --> 00:00:45.980 But the impact was great. 00:00:46.140 --> 00:00:51.140 And it had such a change in people's lives and what took place. 00:00:51.140 --> 00:00:59.000 And we saw though that the believers there at Thessalonica had faced opposition as soon as they trusted Christ. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:08.299 You know, we know from Acts chapter 17 that persecution arrived on the doorstep of a man by the name of Jason, his house. 00:01:08.480 --> 00:01:13.500 And he was assaulted by both Jews and his fellow citizens of the city. 00:01:13.960 --> 00:01:23.539 And we understand that even though that had happened, it didn't stop them from continuing to serve the Lord. 00:01:24.019 --> 00:01:28.240 It didn't hold them back from what God had called them to do. 00:01:28.239 --> 00:01:32.959 They didn't stop in their tracks and turn around. 00:01:33.119 --> 00:01:38.119 Instead, the Bible tells us that they turned to the Lord and they turned away from idols. 00:01:38.699 --> 00:01:43.640 They turned away from that which was before to what they have now in Christ. 00:01:43.819 --> 00:01:48.699 And Paul tells us and reminds us that he's thankful for that. 00:01:48.700 --> 00:01:55.600 And the example that was witnessed through those things of enduring the provocation. 00:01:55.760 --> 00:01:57.680 You know, I want you to understand, we're going to look at it a little bit today. 00:01:58.159 --> 00:02:01.900 But I want you to know that if you stand with the Lord, there's going to be opposition. 00:02:03.700 --> 00:02:08.860 Because this world, there's only two sides that take place in this world. 00:02:09.659 --> 00:02:12.280 You're either with the Lord or against the Lord. 00:02:12.280 --> 00:02:16.020 There's not an option of saying, I'm in the middle. 00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:17.699 You know, we like to have that idea today. 00:02:17.759 --> 00:02:17.979 Why? 00:02:18.340 --> 00:02:19.120 I'm in the middle. 00:02:19.199 --> 00:02:21.740 You hear a lot about, you know, even people politically. 00:02:21.920 --> 00:02:23.060 You know, why I'm in the middle? 00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:25.920 It's like, well, there's certain things you can't be in the middle on. 00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:30.460 You know, that you have to take a stand on one side or the other. 00:02:30.460 --> 00:02:36.200 And when it comes to eternity, the reality is you must be on the Lord's side or you're not. 00:02:37.860 --> 00:02:43.360 When we understand that division that takes place, it's going to cause conflict. 00:02:43.560 --> 00:02:45.360 Division always causes conflict. 00:02:46.420 --> 00:02:50.520 And we're going to see as Paul does that, talks about that here today. 00:02:50.780 --> 00:02:56.020 I want you to see though that he's thankful because when conflict, when persecution, when 00:02:56.020 --> 00:03:02.219 challenges come, how we respond to that, what we look to, what we put our faith in is important. 00:03:02.960 --> 00:03:04.939 To say, what am I going to trust? 00:03:05.840 --> 00:03:08.439 You know, what am I going to put my faith in? 00:03:08.620 --> 00:03:13.760 And so we're going to look here this morning and see something that caused Paul and Silas 00:03:13.760 --> 00:03:18.620 to be thankful and express their gratitude for what took place. 00:03:18.700 --> 00:03:23.200 So if you found 1 Thessalonians chapter 2 this morning, let's stand together in honor of 00:03:23.199 --> 00:03:26.759 the reading of the word of God here today as we read through here. 00:03:26.959 --> 00:03:31.199 And in verse 13, the Bible says this, it says, 00:03:31.299 --> 00:03:38.599 For this cause also we thank God without ceasing, because when ye received the word of God which 00:03:38.599 --> 00:03:44.439 ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word 00:03:44.439 --> 00:03:48.039 of God which effectually worketh also in you that believe. 00:03:48.039 --> 00:03:54.479 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which are in Judea, are in Christ Jesus. 00:03:54.659 --> 00:03:59.780 For ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews, 00:04:00.219 --> 00:04:04.680 who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and have persecuted us. 00:04:04.939 --> 00:04:11.259 And they please not God and are contrary to all men, forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles 00:04:11.259 --> 00:04:16.300 that they might be saved, to fill up their sins always, for the wrath has come upon them 00:04:16.300 --> 00:04:18.680 to the uttermost. 00:04:18.759 --> 00:04:19.240 Let's pray. 00:04:19.319 --> 00:04:23.219 Heavenly Father, as we come before you this morning, Lord, we're thankful for your word. 00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:29.240 Lord, as we just take a few moments here today to look at the realities of your word. 00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:36.019 Lord, the salvation that it provides, the sanctification, the steadfastness that we can rely upon. 00:04:36.019 --> 00:04:44.259 Lord, as we look today, help us to see the necessity of holding on to the truth of your word. 00:04:44.599 --> 00:04:47.379 Lord, even in the face of opposition. 00:04:47.979 --> 00:04:49.879 Lord, things we can be thankful for. 00:04:49.959 --> 00:04:52.359 And Lord, we just give you all the praise in Jesus' name. 00:04:53.019 --> 00:04:53.459 Amen. 00:04:53.639 --> 00:04:54.219 You may be seated. 00:04:54.919 --> 00:05:00.139 You know, as we see here this morning, Paul, we know, encouraged the believers there at Thessalonica 00:05:00.139 --> 00:05:08.339 to walk worthy, you know, of the one that saved them, placing them into his kingdom and his glory. 00:05:08.339 --> 00:05:10.479 We found that at the end of chapter one there. 00:05:10.919 --> 00:05:16.939 And when they received the Lord Jesus through the power of his word and the joy of the Holy Ghost, 00:05:17.180 --> 00:05:20.319 they had been delivered from the wrath to come. 00:05:20.860 --> 00:05:25.399 You know, we see that God delivered them from the wrath to come. 00:05:25.399 --> 00:05:30.699 And we see there was a change that took place, not only presently, but also in eternity. 00:05:31.379 --> 00:05:34.560 There's a dynamic that took place. 00:05:34.579 --> 00:05:41.479 And this happens when one's life, when the gospel is received and is something which we are thankful. 00:05:41.620 --> 00:05:45.219 And Jesus declares, you know, when somebody gets saved, we got to rejoice. 00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:50.599 When somebody comes to know the Lord, you know, Luke chapter 15, Jesus tells us this. 00:05:50.679 --> 00:05:50.939 He says, 00:05:50.939 --> 00:05:57.060 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. 00:05:57.680 --> 00:06:01.180 You know, I want you to understand when somebody, that word repent means to turn. 00:06:02.480 --> 00:06:06.560 You know, when we understand you must turn from our sin and turn to the Savior. 00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:09.939 To know the necessity of that. 00:06:10.040 --> 00:06:13.399 The gospel is something that is important. 00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:15.459 Notice what Paul tells us here. 00:06:15.519 --> 00:06:16.220 Look at our text. 00:06:16.300 --> 00:06:17.399 Look how he starts out here. 00:06:17.399 --> 00:06:20.979 And you'll see this first word many times here. 00:06:21.060 --> 00:06:23.579 If you read the first Thessalonians, for. 00:06:24.179 --> 00:06:25.539 In other words, because of. 00:06:25.579 --> 00:06:28.899 In other words, he's saying, here's all the things attached to this. 00:06:29.599 --> 00:06:32.979 And we see, he says, for this cause, I'm what? 00:06:33.019 --> 00:06:34.139 He says, I'm thankful. 00:06:34.279 --> 00:06:35.060 What's the cause? 00:06:35.419 --> 00:06:37.679 Because you received the word of God. 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:40.479 You received it as it was truth. 00:06:40.599 --> 00:06:45.159 For this cause, the word of God that was preached was received. 00:06:45.160 --> 00:06:47.500 Now that word received means to take it to yourself. 00:06:47.880 --> 00:06:49.520 The dynamic here is very simple. 00:06:51.180 --> 00:06:52.380 It's to make it personal. 00:06:52.740 --> 00:06:55.880 The personal connection to the gospel is essential. 00:06:57.380 --> 00:07:02.100 You know, many people today have this knowledge, but it's not personal. 00:07:02.260 --> 00:07:05.400 Now you can have all the right information and miss out. 00:07:05.399 --> 00:07:09.339 You know, we see that dynamic all the time. 00:07:09.419 --> 00:07:15.359 You can know what you ought to do, but if you choose not to do it, it's not going to be beneficial. 00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:18.919 And we see that Paul says they did something. 00:07:19.039 --> 00:07:20.659 They didn't just hear it. 00:07:21.039 --> 00:07:22.739 They received it. 00:07:23.399 --> 00:07:26.779 And they received it not just as information either. 00:07:26.859 --> 00:07:28.299 They received it as personal. 00:07:28.659 --> 00:07:31.000 And that it was the word of God. 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:37.899 And so we're going to see here this morning, the gospel has to be taken personally to be effective. 00:07:38.579 --> 00:07:41.379 You know, it's not effective if it's just information. 00:07:42.379 --> 00:07:48.819 You know, we see here, notice that Paul says he's thankful for salvation, thankful for their salvation, 00:07:48.819 --> 00:07:56.959 because the gospel is God's provision to rescue a sinful person that stands responsible for their sins. 00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:02.839 You know, Paul was thankful for the work of the gospel, a work that transforms lives. 00:08:02.979 --> 00:08:10.019 It was the preaching of the gospel through which they received what was effective to reconcile them to God. 00:08:10.500 --> 00:08:13.199 You know, it was by hearing the word of God. 00:08:13.599 --> 00:08:17.419 You know, we can see here that the ministry is gospel-centered. 00:08:17.579 --> 00:08:21.579 You know, the gospel is not the end of things, it's the beginning. 00:08:21.579 --> 00:08:25.079 Because it's where lives are changed and transformed. 00:08:25.219 --> 00:08:28.000 The road in which we're on is changed. 00:08:28.259 --> 00:08:31.019 Jesus said there's a wide path and a narrow path. 00:08:31.319 --> 00:08:34.159 You know, when you're on two different paths, they take you different directions. 00:08:35.819 --> 00:08:42.360 You can't be on different paths going opposite directions and expect to end up at the same destination. 00:08:44.199 --> 00:08:48.120 You know, it's illogical to understand, but sometimes people think that. 00:08:48.120 --> 00:08:54.679 You know, and we can see here that the gospel here is, the ministry is gospel-centered. 00:08:54.840 --> 00:08:59.519 It's centered also because the gospel is centered on the word of God. 00:09:00.639 --> 00:09:05.480 You know, notice how Paul here has gratitude as a result of what they received. 00:09:05.580 --> 00:09:06.759 Look here at verse 13. 00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:07.840 He says this, 00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:12.480 When you received the word of God which ye heard of us. 00:09:13.100 --> 00:09:14.759 Received after it was heard. 00:09:14.759 --> 00:09:24.799 Paul clearly connects the proclamation of the gospel, the words that are there as an essential product to produce salvation. 00:09:25.399 --> 00:09:29.279 I want you to understand that people need to know before they can respond. 00:09:30.460 --> 00:09:33.519 You know, you can't respond to something you have no clue about. 00:09:33.840 --> 00:09:35.600 You know, I mean, those are simple realities. 00:09:36.580 --> 00:09:39.379 But oftentimes we forget that that's essential. 00:09:40.439 --> 00:09:41.860 That essential dynamic. 00:09:41.860 --> 00:09:46.039 Because notice here, he says this word that was heard of us. 00:09:46.100 --> 00:09:50.740 You know, a little later, Paul wrote in the book of Romans, in Romans chapter 10 and verse 17. 00:09:51.240 --> 00:09:52.139 He says this, 00:09:52.180 --> 00:09:54.759 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by what? 00:09:55.240 --> 00:09:56.419 The word of God. 00:09:58.120 --> 00:10:02.860 Paul in Romans wasn't just writing abstract or theological discussion stuff. 00:10:03.620 --> 00:10:04.860 He was writing practicality. 00:10:06.480 --> 00:10:07.019 He says, 00:10:07.019 --> 00:10:08.279 This is what took place. 00:10:08.340 --> 00:10:11.079 This is what took place at Thessalonica when I was there. 00:10:11.259 --> 00:10:15.240 When I preached the word of God, it changed lives. 00:10:15.639 --> 00:10:17.500 It wasn't just Paul's words. 00:10:18.379 --> 00:10:21.220 You know, I want you to understand, sometimes people think it's the words of the preacher. 00:10:22.819 --> 00:10:26.139 I want you to understand, the preacher just needs to proclaim the book. 00:10:26.139 --> 00:10:28.539 Because my words won't change your life. 00:10:28.779 --> 00:10:30.240 But God's word will change your life. 00:10:31.659 --> 00:10:33.819 God's word will change everything about you. 00:10:34.620 --> 00:10:40.960 If you take it, if you receive it as it is, and we see here that when the apostle, if you remember, 00:10:41.399 --> 00:10:46.039 when Paul and Silas and Timothy arrived in Thessalonica, 00:10:46.039 --> 00:10:49.459 I want you to know here, because at the beginning of this chapter, 00:10:49.899 --> 00:10:54.379 in chapter 1, chapter 2, you'll find that Paul is combating some things, 00:10:54.439 --> 00:10:56.599 saying Paul just came to promote himself. 00:10:56.919 --> 00:10:59.439 Paul just came to build himself up. 00:10:59.740 --> 00:11:01.539 Paul just came to pad his pockets. 00:11:01.719 --> 00:11:06.199 You know, there are people who use the gospel to try to pad their pockets and build themselves up. 00:11:07.779 --> 00:11:08.779 But Paul's saying, 00:11:08.899 --> 00:11:10.519 That wasn't the reason I was there. 00:11:11.399 --> 00:11:13.679 His whole focus was on the word of God. 00:11:13.679 --> 00:11:15.980 Look back into Acts chapter 17 for a moment. 00:11:16.579 --> 00:11:20.779 Acts chapter 17, when Paul came to the people there at Thessalonica, 00:11:21.740 --> 00:11:22.980 he didn't come and say, 00:11:23.099 --> 00:11:24.000 Hey, listen to Paul. 00:11:24.199 --> 00:11:26.279 I'm a chosen prophet of God. 00:11:26.559 --> 00:11:29.120 You know, what's interesting is, is the Bible makes it pretty clear. 00:11:29.219 --> 00:11:30.159 Paul was an apostle. 00:11:30.299 --> 00:11:32.819 He was one called by the Lord. 00:11:32.860 --> 00:11:33.659 He had some authority. 00:11:34.039 --> 00:11:39.360 But the one thing you find is Paul never came in as a promotion of himself. 00:11:39.699 --> 00:11:41.360 Look here in Acts chapter 17. 00:11:41.360 --> 00:11:42.299 Look at verse 2. 00:11:42.899 --> 00:11:44.439 The word of God tells us this. 00:11:44.579 --> 00:11:44.839 It says, 00:11:46.039 --> 00:11:51.059 And as his manner was, he went into them three Sabbath days, reasoning with them what? 00:11:51.279 --> 00:11:52.079 Out of where? 00:11:53.099 --> 00:11:54.179 The Scripture. 00:11:54.699 --> 00:11:56.860 Now notice, what was he doing with the Scripture? 00:11:57.500 --> 00:11:59.719 He wasn't building himself up. 00:11:59.759 --> 00:12:01.240 He was building Christ up. 00:12:02.219 --> 00:12:03.939 Notice what it says that he did. 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:04.259 He says, 00:12:04.379 --> 00:12:05.839 Opening and alleging. 00:12:05.840 --> 00:12:11.480 In other words, he's introducing them to the fact of who Jesus Christ is. 00:12:11.480 --> 00:12:13.019 He says, 00:12:13.019 --> 00:12:13.100 He says, 00:12:13.159 --> 00:12:21.580 I want you to understand that God in the Old Testament had had a plan and a purpose and a direction that he had set. 00:12:21.820 --> 00:12:24.740 And he brought forth those things to us. 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:27.080 And he said that he wants us to know. 00:12:27.300 --> 00:12:29.659 Because notice, what was he opening and alleging? 00:12:29.860 --> 00:12:33.500 That Christ must needs have suffered and risen again from the dead. 00:12:33.500 --> 00:12:36.840 And that this Jesus whom I preach unto you is Christ. 00:12:37.039 --> 00:12:42.559 I want you to understand that it's interesting because as you read through this and you read the rest of Thessalonians, 00:12:42.679 --> 00:12:45.740 I think one of Paul's key passages was Isaiah 53. 00:12:45.740 --> 00:12:51.820 Because you'll see a lot of references back to Isaiah 53 in this passage. 00:12:52.680 --> 00:12:55.299 That he makes a reference back. 00:12:55.879 --> 00:12:57.180 You know, one of them is heard. 00:12:57.879 --> 00:12:58.039 You know, 00:12:58.200 --> 00:12:59.799 Who hath believed our report? 00:13:01.080 --> 00:13:03.019 That's Isaiah 53 verse 1. 00:13:03.060 --> 00:13:04.360 Who hath believed our report? 00:13:04.620 --> 00:13:06.799 To whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? 00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:08.419 You know, what's Paul saying? 00:13:08.500 --> 00:13:10.779 I came to you to proclaim Christ. 00:13:11.159 --> 00:13:13.659 I came to you to tell you who Christ is. 00:13:13.659 --> 00:13:16.939 The message that was presented was not something new. 00:13:17.139 --> 00:13:20.819 But the fulfillment of God's plan revealed in his word. 00:13:21.360 --> 00:13:21.539 You know, 00:13:21.639 --> 00:13:24.799 It had been set in place from the foundation of the world. 00:13:24.919 --> 00:13:25.059 You know, 00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:28.240 1 Peter chapter 1 tells us this in verse 20. 00:13:28.339 --> 00:13:31.639 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, 00:13:31.699 --> 00:13:35.899 But was manifest in these last times for you. 00:13:36.600 --> 00:13:36.860 You know, 00:13:36.899 --> 00:13:39.679 Jesus came for you. 00:13:41.159 --> 00:13:42.419 Jesus came for me. 00:13:42.419 --> 00:13:44.620 He made it clear of what was taking place. 00:13:44.740 --> 00:13:47.360 It was the word of God that was proclaimed. 00:13:47.500 --> 00:13:54.000 The fact that it was proclaimed and bearing witness to the word of God is God's way to reach the world for Christ. 00:13:54.519 --> 00:13:57.419 Because when they hear the word of God, they have a choice to make. 00:13:59.159 --> 00:13:59.699 You know, 00:13:59.740 --> 00:14:03.779 Oftentimes we forget the reality that when you're confronted with something that says, 00:14:03.959 --> 00:14:05.939 You're at an intersection in life. 00:14:05.940 --> 00:14:10.380 The gospel puts you at an intersection in life. 00:14:12.020 --> 00:14:14.740 You have to make a choice which direction you're going to go. 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:18.620 You're either going to obey the gospel or you're going to disobey the gospel. 00:14:18.880 --> 00:14:19.620 There's no in between. 00:14:19.980 --> 00:14:20.920 There's no way of saying, 00:14:21.060 --> 00:14:21.160 Well, 00:14:21.220 --> 00:14:22.200 What about tomorrow?
