00:06:42.839 You could title the prayer clinic if he was going to have it over at, like, the hotel over here. 00:06:43.060 --> 00:06:45.639 He was like, purposeful, God-centered praying. 00:06:46.099 --> 00:06:47.419 Motivations and practices. 00:06:47.420 --> 00:06:58.560 Now, if you have room to grow in your prayer life, your private prayer life, and we all do, then give ear. 00:07:00.140 --> 00:07:01.160 Listen carefully. 00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:14.460 What Jesus says in these ten verses will help you pray with greater humility and greater confidence and greater God-glorifying effectiveness. 00:07:14.459 --> 00:07:21.899 So you can split these ten verses, this prayer clinic, into two sections. 00:07:22.919 --> 00:07:25.259 Motivations and practice. 00:07:27.599 --> 00:07:37.599 Verses 5-8, Jesus help us to see that what pleases God when it comes to our praying is a humble and confident heart. 00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:49.180 And then when he turns to the practice in verses 9-15, it's that very familiar Lord's Prayer, which is actually a Lord's Model Prayer. 00:07:51.660 --> 00:07:53.260 The bottom line is this. 00:07:54.280 --> 00:07:58.260 Your Heavenly Father wants you to pray to Him. 00:07:59.100 --> 00:08:05.420 He wants you to come to Him with the right motives and addressing the right stuff when you pray. 00:08:05.420 --> 00:08:09.000 And Jesus puts on a clinic for us here. 00:08:09.800 --> 00:08:21.700 So let's look at this first area of the clinic, this first issue of motivation to God-centered praying in verses 5-8. 00:08:21.819 --> 00:08:22.840 Do you know what a motive is? 00:08:23.939 --> 00:08:31.360 A motivation is this internal impulse that compels us to do something. 00:08:31.360 --> 00:08:47.039 For example, my internal love for chocolate compels me to go great lengths to satisfy my desire for it. 00:08:47.060 --> 00:08:47.639 Do I have an amen? 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:53.399 But what motivates us to pray? 00:08:54.519 --> 00:08:57.879 What compels us to pray? 00:08:57.879 --> 00:09:02.759 What drives you into your prayer closet? 00:09:03.899 --> 00:09:06.460 Well, that's what Jesus puts His finger on in verses 5-8. 00:09:07.320 --> 00:09:08.919 It all starts in your heart. 00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:11.500 It all starts inside you. 00:09:11.659 --> 00:09:13.480 It all starts from within. 00:09:13.740 --> 00:09:20.080 And Jesus uses two contrasts to instruct us on right motives for praying. 00:09:20.919 --> 00:09:22.379 And they start with negatives. 00:09:22.580 --> 00:09:23.539 The first one is this. 00:09:23.779 --> 00:09:25.899 We see that in verse 5. 00:09:25.899 --> 00:09:29.620 And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. 00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:33.579 The issue here is one of pride. 00:09:36.399 --> 00:09:46.840 In their pride, there were religious people in Jesus' day who were twisting prayer into a public, self-serving spectacle. 00:09:46.840 --> 00:09:50.180 It was all about self-promotion for them. 00:09:51.500 --> 00:10:01.240 Now, originally that word hypocrite was used of stage actors who would put on different masks to portray different characters in a play. 00:10:01.240 --> 00:10:09.279 And so, the hypocrisy that Jesus is addressing here is using prayer for the wrong reason. 00:10:09.980 --> 00:10:16.740 Where prayer is meant ultimately to be about God, these hypocrites were making prayer about them. 00:10:17.799 --> 00:10:18.580 Look at me. 00:10:19.960 --> 00:10:21.159 Look how good I can pray. 00:10:21.159 --> 00:10:28.579 But what we know is that prayer is not meant to be done for man. 00:10:28.779 --> 00:10:32.500 Prayer is an act, a humble act of devotion to God. 00:10:33.659 --> 00:10:36.980 Prayer is a means by which we live for God, not ourselves. 00:10:36.980 --> 00:10:46.759 And so, what we see in verses 5 and 6 is a contrast between the prideful and the humble. 00:10:46.759 --> 00:10:59.460 Between public, self-promoting prayers that have a short-lived promise and private, humble, Father-rewarding prayers. 00:11:00.860 --> 00:11:03.779 So, let me just point you to some things in verses 5 and 6. 00:11:03.779 --> 00:11:06.779 The contrast of venue. 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:12.279 There is the public versus the private contrast. 00:11:12.459 --> 00:11:12.939 Did you notice? 00:11:13.079 --> 00:11:15.079 Pray in the synagogues and on the street corners. 00:11:15.199 --> 00:11:16.000 What do they have in common? 00:11:16.959 --> 00:11:20.199 Those are places where your praying would be seen by men. 00:11:21.519 --> 00:11:27.779 By the way, a good Jew at the time, it was very common for Jews to be praying at least three times a day. 00:11:28.279 --> 00:11:29.620 Called to prayer each time. 00:11:29.720 --> 00:11:31.159 So, no matter where you were, you would pray. 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:33.759 Whether in a synagogue or a street corner. 00:11:33.779 --> 00:11:38.299 That's contrasted with verse 6. 00:11:38.419 --> 00:11:44.779 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, literally unseen. 00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:48.819 And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 00:11:50.039 --> 00:11:56.220 What's interesting is about in the original language, the Greek language, when you get to verse 6, verse 5 is all about this y'all. decline any opportunity to pray publicly 00:18:17.380 --> 00:18:24.559 until you're consistently praying in the unseen place to your unseen Father. 00:18:25.059 --> 00:18:27.480 That will be a
