The first sermon of the Apostle Paul during his ministry in the first of his three great missionary journeys that are recorded in the Book of Acts. 00:00:21.899 --> 00:00:30.199 I mentioned this morning that he was in the company of Barnabas who came from the island of Crete. 00:00:30.539 --> 00:00:37.519 And when they visited that island together at the beginning of this missionary journey sent out from Antioch in Syria, 00:00:38.179 --> 00:00:42.340 I suppose the leading apostle was Barnabas. 00:00:43.099 --> 00:00:50.840 But after leaving the island and going to the mainland of Asia Minor and going to Pisidian Antioch, 00:00:50.840 --> 00:00:57.880 they came to see Paul becoming the main spokesman of the mission. 00:00:58.560 --> 00:01:10.640 He became the more gifted of the two and the more used by the Lord to spread the message that would one day win the whole world. 00:01:12.060 --> 00:01:16.939 The first missionary journey covers Acts chapter 13 and 14. 00:01:16.939 --> 00:01:20.739 The narrative begins in Antioch in Syria. 00:01:21.159 --> 00:01:26.140 It ends in Antioch in Syria with a report back to the sending church. 00:01:26.259 --> 00:01:37.120 And all of that took around about a year and a half, under two years of traveling around 18 to 24 months. 00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:43.000 And they visited the islands of the Mediterranean and they visited cities like Perga, 00:01:43.480 --> 00:01:50.480 this city where this sermon was in Antioch, in Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe. 00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:53.439 The message was one of hope. 00:01:53.600 --> 00:01:55.560 It was full of the resurrection. 00:01:55.560 --> 00:02:03.700 Just to stand back from this particular chapter, this particular passage that we're going to look at tonight, 00:02:04.420 --> 00:02:08.560 just to remind you of what Acts is in the Word of God. 00:02:09.219 --> 00:02:16.140 John Piper has helpfully commented that Acts is fairly unique in the Scriptures. 00:02:16.139 --> 00:02:25.459 It's a book that's in the canon of Scripture to help prevent the church from coasting to a standstill. 00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:30.159 It's really easy for that to happen to the Christian church, 00:02:30.259 --> 00:02:39.139 especially if things are going quite well or if there are decent numbers or there's plenty money around or something like that. 00:02:39.139 --> 00:02:44.119 We can simply think maintenance is all that we need. 00:02:44.199 --> 00:02:49.799 We'll just keep going, keep the wheels turning, but to complete Piper's quote, 00:02:49.899 --> 00:02:54.779 to prevent the church from coasting to a standstill and entering a maintenance mode 00:02:54.779 --> 00:02:59.979 with all the inner wheels turning, working, but going nowhere. 00:03:01.079 --> 00:03:05.119 There have been many moments in the history of the global church 00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:16.700 where a particular local expression of the Christian faith starts to coast, to plateau and to decline 00:03:16.700 --> 00:03:20.259 or comes under the judgment of the Lord. 00:03:21.099 --> 00:03:27.580 And I'm pretty convinced that the book of Acts contains the answer to avoid that danger. 00:03:28.400 --> 00:03:33.300 This book is saturated in prayer and in the fear of the Lord 00:03:33.300 --> 00:03:38.600 and it is driven by the heartbeat of a missionary concern. 00:03:39.300 --> 00:03:43.400 Wanting to see outsiders becoming insiders, 00:03:43.800 --> 00:03:48.080 wanting to see people who are far away being brought near. 00:03:48.760 --> 00:03:53.160 If we lose that prayerful concern and that missionary concern, 00:03:53.160 --> 00:03:56.800 we're not really walking in the footsteps of the apostles. 00:03:57.240 --> 00:04:02.060 We're not really living like a book of Acts kind of church. 00:04:02.060 --> 00:04:06.199 And yet the book of Acts is there in the New Testament to say, 00:04:06.400 --> 00:04:12.180 this is what life looks like between the first and second comings of Jesus. 00:04:12.819 --> 00:04:23.340 We want to see witness from Jerusalem in ever expanding circles of effect, 00:04:23.699 --> 00:04:25.220 like ripples in a pond. 00:04:25.860 --> 00:04:31.579 You throw a stone in a pond and the ripples travel to the other side of the pond. 00:04:31.579 --> 00:04:34.579 If you stand by a loch or something like that, 00:04:34.659 --> 00:04:35.899 you've probably all done this. 00:04:35.959 --> 00:04:39.759 You've thrown a stone and you see the little wave that it creates. 00:04:40.639 --> 00:04:44.099 Well, the death and the resurrection of Jesus 00:04:44.099 --> 00:04:49.479 are a moment at the center of the history of the universe, 00:04:50.319 --> 00:04:51.699 sending out ripples. 00:04:51.699 --> 00:04:56.439 And depending on how we hear that story and respond to it, 00:04:56.439 --> 00:05:08.279 we will either be drawing nearer or drawing further away from life and hope and peace with God. 00:05:09.419 --> 00:05:18.039 The church was born in Pisidian Antioch over the course of eight days of ministry. 00:05:18.040 --> 00:05:23.040 Two Sabbaths, two Jewish Sabbaths. 00:05:23.620 --> 00:05:27.580 Paul and Barnabas witnessing to a little group there. 00:05:28.360 --> 00:05:33.340 And on the eighth day, they were thrown out and they had to flee. 00:05:33.339 --> 00:05:41.799 But eight days was long enough to establish a living church that continued in that place 00:05:41.799 --> 00:05:48.079 and that continued to glorify God for years and years and years to come. 00:05:48.799 --> 00:05:55.500 This book of Acts is full of fuel for our prayers and wisdom. 00:05:55.500 --> 00:06:02.100 If we want strategies, if we want an idea of who we should be and what we should be doing, 00:06:02.420 --> 00:06:06.399 we don't need to look any further. 00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:12.620 Title for my message tonight is the gospel goes viral. 00:06:12.860 --> 00:06:15.959 It spreads like a contagion. 00:06:17.040 --> 00:06:22.100 You see these things sometimes in the news or on social media or something like that, 00:06:22.100 --> 00:06:27.840 that a story will be ignored for a long time and then suddenly everyone's talking about it. 00:06:28.780 --> 00:06:37.140 It's mentioned, it's discussed, it's gossiped, it spreads all around the world. 00:06:37.140 --> 00:06:46.240 And Jesus and his death and resurrection becomes the talking point in Pisidian Antioch. 00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:50.340 The church is born and the church grows. 00:06:50.500 --> 00:06:58.360 Two things about how this message came and about how it was reacted to tonight. 00:06:58.480 --> 00:07:04.259 The first thing is that there is good news for those who break God's law. 00:07:05.259 --> 00:07:09.519 The gospel, by definition, is good news. 00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:17.259 And the gospel is to be shared with those who are in the wrong before Almighty God. 00:07:18.139 --> 00:07:20.839 The gospel is for sinners. 00:07:21.799 --> 00:07:29.639 The gospel exposes the fact that we are sinners in need of Christ, in need of grace. 00:07:29.639 --> 00:07:36.959 The reason I broke the reading this morning at verse 37 and took it up again tonight at verse 38 00:07:36.959 --> 00:07:42.759 is that Paul seems here to be moving to application mode. 00:07:43.379 --> 00:07:49.199 He gives us his teaching, his doctrine, in his sermon, lots of Old Testament quotation 00:07:49.199 --> 00:07:54.399 in the verses recorded between 13 and 37. 00:07:54.399 --> 00:08:03.699 But from verse 38 onwards, he's really bringing the plane down to land with his listeners in that synagogue. 00:08:04.439 --> 00:08:06.299 He's giving them the application. 00:08:06.539 --> 00:08:07.299 So what? 00:08:07.339 --> 00:08:12.279 What should you do with this message of Jesus who's been raised? 00:08:12.839 --> 00:08:14.539 And so he says in verse 38, 00:08:15.019 --> 00:08:17.179 Let it be known to you therefore. 00:08:17.699 --> 00:08:19.319 I want you to take this on board. 00:08:19.459 --> 00:08:22.799 I want you to know this, understand it and act upon it, brothers. 00:08:22.800 --> 00:08:28.400 That through this man, through Jesus, what do you get through Jesus? 00:08:28.819 --> 00:08:30.759 What is the good news of Jesus? 00:08:31.699 --> 00:08:37.779 It is that forgiveness is preached, is offered. 00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:43.879 Forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you and by him. 00:08:44.060 --> 00:08:51.399 Everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of They went to the synagogue. 00:09:01.939 --> 00:09:07.039 They did the things that Jewish people were supposed to do according to the law of Moses. 00:09:07.339 --> 00:09:10.359 They would be circumcising their little boys. 00:09:10.859 --> 00:09:17.240 They would be thinking about how they paid into the costs of the temple back in Jerusalem. 00:09:17.240 --> 00:09:26.080 They would be thinking about the year and how at different stages in the year they obeyed the requirements of the law. 00:09:26.820 --> 00:09:31.759 Their home life, even their kitchen, would be governed by the law of Moses. 00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:37.960 And Paul says that's fine as far as it goes. 00:09:37.960 --> 00:09:41.460 But it does not free you from sin. 00:09:42.620 --> 00:09:50.259 The law of Moses binding on me, binding on my heart, binding on you. 00:10:16.360 --> 00:10:26.660 And no amount of temple visiting or synagogue visiting or attempts at keeping the law can fix you. 00:10:27.340 --> that if you have religion without a living faith in Jesus, 00:11:07.919 --> 00:11:16.559 you are trying to solve a guilt and shame and sin problem with something that will let you down. 00:11:17.639 to a lad not so many days ago who grew up as a Jehovah's Witness. 00:11:36.960 --> 00:11:46.400 And in his early 20s he has turned his back on all of that and he has embraced Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. 00:11:47.360 --> 00:11:52.480 And as far as I can see, a true and growing Christian disciple. 00:11:52.480 --> 00:11:59.300 And he talked about what it was like to be a boy in that particular sect. 00:12:00.139 --> 00:12:05.840 That they would do the mission things that they were told they had to do. 00:12:06.659 --> 00:12:09.840 To be on side with God. 00:12:10.019 --> 00:12:12.300 To be on side with the Kingdom Hall. 00:12:13.259 --> 00:12:18.200 They would have to visit people or give out literature or approach doors. 00:12:18.200 --> 00:12:21.780 But they would 00:13:34.480 He talks about freedom from these burdens. 00:13:34.480 --> 00:13:41.460 Freedom from the law of Moses that they couldn't keep by themselves through Christ and his resurrection. 00:13:41.920 --> 00:13:42.860 But in verse 40. 00:13:43.000 --> 00:13:46.279 Beware therefore lest what is said and the prophet should come about. 00:13:46.440 --> 00:13:47.860 Look you scoffers. 00:13:48.639 --> 00:13:52.240 Be astounded and perish for I am doing a work in your days. 00:13:52.659 --> 00:13:56.240 A work that you will not believe even if one tells it to you. 00:13:56.240 --> 00:14:01.620 Now the background to that was that Habakkuk had a message of invasion. 00:14:01.879 --> 00:14:05.519 Of the Babylonians coming to judge the nation. 00:14:06.039 --> 00:14:08.700 Because they were just going through the motions. 00:14:09.639 --> 00:14:10.680 They were just religious. 00:14:11.980 --> 00:14:16.120 There was violence and there was destruction and strife and conflict. 00:14:16.519 --> 00:14:19.560 They weren't really repenting of these real sins. 00:14:20.279 --> 00:14:24.500 They weren't addressing the root problem of the human heart. 00:14:24.500 --> 00:14:28.240 And so Habakkuk says in Habakkuk 1.4 00:14:28.240 --> 00:14:33.759 Therefore the law is paralyzed and justice never prevails. 00:14:34.399 --> 00:14:35.879 That's why you scoff. 00:14:36.000 --> and Luke 9 and Luke 10. 00:15:52.160 --> 00:15:56.320 Jesus said if they won't receive my peace and my word. 00:15:57.040 --> 00:15:59.720 Shake the dust off your feet and go to the next town. 00:16:00.139 --> 00:16:01.340 And go to the next town. 00:16:01.740 --> 00:16:02.980 And go to the next town. 00:16:03.139 --> 00:16:07.220 So that folk have the opportunity to hear the good news. 00:16:48.620 --> 00:16:49.819 Am I doing this? 00:16:49.879 --> 00:16:50.899 Are you doing this? 00:16:51.159 --> 00:16:51.819 That we think, 00:16:52.559 --> 00:16:59.139 My problem with sin and my problem with the things that I don't get quite right, 00:16:59.139 --> 00:17:00.500 It's quite a small problem. 00:17:01.580 --> 00:17:04.500 It's one I'm going to somehow muddle through and fix. 00:17:05.759 --> 00:17:11.859 I don't really need God to come down and dramatically save me. 00:17:12.619 --> 00:17:15.900 I don't need the Son of God to take my load. 00:17:17.339 --> 00:17:19.279 I'm better than a lot of other people. 00:17:19.279 --> 00:17:24.339 If there's a piece of your heart that thinks like that, 00:17:25.139 --> 00:17:32.440 Talk to God about it and admit that that is a the Gentiles. 00:18:01.860 --> 00:18:04.380 He's going to turn to the non-Jews. 00:18:04.799 --> 00:18:11.420 Because so many of the Jews are hardening their hearts against the message of the it to you. 00:19:21.799 --> 00:19:23.180 But the second thing tonight, 00:19:23.600 --> 00:19:26.100 As well as the good news for those who break God's law, 00:19:26.100 --> 00:19:30.900 Is the right response to God's gospel. 00:19:31.380 --> 00:19:37.000 Verse 42 to the end of the chapter shows us those who responded correctly, 00:19:37.000 --> 00:19:40.420 And those who did not respond correctly. 00:19:41.119 --> 00:19:41.900 Verse 42, 00:19:42.019 --> 00:19:42.759 As they went out, 00:19:42.819 --> 00:19:45.900 Went out of the synagogue on the first of the two Sabbaths, 00:19:46.119 --> 00:19:49.920 The people begged them that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. 00:19:51.079 --> 00:19:53.180 But they didn't wait till the next Sabbath. 00:19:54.299 --> 00:19:55.220 Verse 43, 00:19:56.079 --> 00:20:01.640 They haven't really left the vicinity of the gathering in the events in verse 43. 00:20:01.640 --> 00:20:04.440 After the meeting of the synagogue broke up, 00:20:04.440 --> 00:20:10.100 Many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas. 00:20:11.400 --> 00:20:12.299 Isn't that interesting? 00:20:13.680 --> 00:20:15.180 They Antioch? 00:21:06.400 --> 00:21:11.000 The whole city wasn't in the Jewish synagogue on the first Sabbath. 00:21:12.680 --> 00:21:16.020 Something has happened in that city 00:21:16.020 --> 00:21:20.640 Between one Friday and the next Friday. 00:21:20.640 --> 00:21:24.360 The Sabbath was Friday night, Saturday morning. 00:21:26.300 --> 00:21:30.500 What happened between the synagogue
