around the clock to melt down and to process these heavy metals, brass and copper, 00:00:53.460 --> 00:00:59.600 and to all kinds of things, whether it's copper wires or bullets or all kinds of things Tom, on this one particular machine on a task that is not worth recounting. 00:01:12.260 --> 00:01:15.280 But the two of us worked together all summer on this machine. 00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:22.540 We would go out every couple of hours so that Tom and the other guys could take their cigarette break just outside of where we worked. 00:01:23.239 --> 00:01:31.240 And we would go out there, and these guys would smoke, and they would talk about mostly women and cars. 00:01:32.140 --> 00:01:39.260 And, you know, to be honest, it was a place where someone like me did not feel totally in my element. tunnel syndrome due to the nature of the job, 00:02:05.219 --> 00:02:11.219 which is the same surgery that the three last guys who had this job before him had had before they stopped that job. 00:03:03.060 And I was arguing that prayer, in fact, accomplishes things. 00:03:03.300 --> 00:03:09.460 And he was arguing that, well, it's a nice thing to do, but it's actually not really, it doesn't a great Presbyterian pastor from about a hundred years ago, 00:07:42.939 --> 00:07:44.100 who wrote a book on prayer. 00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:46.240 And he referred to as this, 00:07:46.340 --> 00:07:47.520 this man was named, 00:07:47.620 --> 00:07:48.699 his name was David McIntyre. 00:07:48.759 --> 00:07:49.000 He said, 00:07:49.080 --> 00:07:52.139 Prayer is the lifeblood of the Christian. 00:07:52.319 --> 00:07:53.860 Prayer is the lifeblood of the Christian. 00:07:53.920 --> 00:07:57.280 What flows through the Christian life for us, 00:07:57.319 --> 00:08:00.199 what brings life to every part of our bodies, 00:08:00.199 --> 00:08:02.139 is prayer. 00:08:03.180 --> 00:08:03.819 And just like, 00:08:03.879 --> 00:08:05.379 just like the blood in our bodies, 00:08:05.500 --> 00:08:19.899 and to renewal in God. 00:08:20.980 --> 00:08:21.860 If that's the case, 00:08:21.860 --> 00:08:26.560 why do so many of us feel like giving up on prayer? 00:08:26.660 --> 00:08:29.879 Why do so many of us get tired of prayer? 00:08:30.840 --> 00:08:32.460 I hope that this parable, 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:34.399 this parable that Jesus told, 00:08:34.899 --> 00:08:36.279 can be an encouragement and a help here. 00:08:37.419 --> 00:08:39.480 Here's again how the parable went. 00:08:39.480 --> 00:08:41.899 Jesus said, 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:43.539 In a certain city there was a judge. 00:08:44.259 --> 00:08:45.920 So he's comparing this to a judge, 00:08:46.860 --> 00:08:49.560 who neither feared God nor respected man. 00:08:49.600 --> 00:08:51.100 And there was a widow in that city, 00:08:51.300 --> 00:08:53.180 who kept coming to him and saying, 00:08:53.340 --> 00:08:55.840 Give me justice against my adversary. 00:08:56.060 --> 00:08:57.360 And for a while he refused. 00:08:57.500 --> 00:08:58.840 But afterward he said to himself, 00:08:59.740 --> 00:09:02.399 Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 00:09:02.800 --> 00:09:05.259 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, 00:09:05.259 --> 00:09:06.860 I will give her justice, 00:09:06.860 --> 00:09:08.840 so that she will not beat me down 00:09:08.840 --> 00:09:10.259 with her continual 00:09:48.360 --> 00:09:49.500 that is a little bit different 00:09:49.500 --> 00:09:50.679 from what our culture uses. 00:09:50.819 --> 00:09:52.580 We use certain assumptions 00:09:52.580 --> 00:09:55.620 to get through persuasion quickly. 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:57.240 And in their culture, 00:09:57.659 --> 00:09:58.860 one way that they did that 00:09:58.860 --> 00:10:01.879 was this process by which they said, 00:10:01.879 --> 00:10:04.319 How much more so with God? 00:10:04.320 --> 00:10:06.400 So they would describe something like God, 00:10:06.879 --> 00:10:08.480 a judge who has power, 00:10:08.879 --> 00:10:11.360 and then eventually he does something good. 00:10:11.460 --> 00:10:13.360 How much more so with God, 00:10:13.400 --> 00:10:14.480 who is all-powerful, 00:10:14.500 --> 00:10:16.700 will he not do something good? 00:10:17.260 --> 00:10:18.840 We do some similar things 00:10:18.840 --> 00:10:20.140 when we speak logically. 00:10:20.300 --> to encourage us 00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:07.220 as a church 00:13:07.220 --> 00:13:08.059 and as a community 00:13:08.059 --> 00:13:08.799 in prayer. 00:13:09.299 --> 00:13:10.279 And I think that, with people 00:13:25.980 --> 00:13:26.500 out prayer, 00:13:27.000 --> 00:13:28.279 with connecting with people 00:13:28.279 --> 00:13:28.799 in prayer. 00:13:29.279 --> 00:13:30.559 If we can do this
