looked at the martyrs under the altar, fifth seal, singing, how long, O Lord? 00:04:58.560 --> 00:05:02.819 We looked at the sixth seal, the preview of that great day of God's wrath. 00:05:02.819 --> 00:05:10.800 And then we skipped chapter 7 in order to get to chapter 8 in the opening of the seventh seal, which was this calm before the storm. 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:16.420 Literally, a kind of silence of the lamb in a whole different sense. 00:05:16.420 --> 00:05:29.580 What you need to understand is that chapter 7 is response to a question asked at the end of chapter 6. 00:05:29.780 --> 00:05:36.139 If you look in Revelation 6.17, those on the earth on the day of God's wrath, they say, 00:05:36.400 --> 00:05:39.240 for the great day of their wrath has come. 00:05:39.639 --> 00:05:41.920 And then they ask, and who can stand? 00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:59.939 And the way that chapter 7 answers the question of who can stand is by giving us two different pictures. 00:06:01.080 --> 00:06:04.960 And I'm going to argue this morning that they're complementary pictures. 00:06:05.960 --> 00:06:09.520 They're two different pictures of the same group of people. 00:06:09.519 --> 00:07:45.220 --> 00:07:52.960 What's important to notice is that that word seal shows up in these eight verses six times. 00:07:54.100 --> 00:07:56.840 And when it comes to our Bibles, that's a paying attention to that. 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:12.680 What we see happening in verse 1 is that there are these seven or four angels sent to the four corners of the earth holding back the four winds. 00:08:12.680 --> 00:08:18.060 Likely, those are the four winds that's a parallel with the four horsemen. 00:08:18.420 --> 00:08:22.100 It's a holding back of tribulation, of judgment. 00:08:24.019 --> 00:08:28.000 And in verse 2, there's another angel that comes out of the east. 00:08:28.139 --> 00:08:33.899 And that angel is holding in his hand the seal of the living God. 00:08:33.899 --> 00:08:42.639 And in verse 3, that angel with the seal tells those four angels holding back the judgments to say, 00:08:43.319 --> 00:08:48.620 hold on until we have sealed the 144,000. 00:08:49.159 --> 00:08:52.000 We've sealed them on their foreheads. 00:08:53.340 --> 00:08:55.019 So what is a seal? 00:08:55.840 --> 00:08:58.199 We're not talking about a marine animal, of course. 00:08:58.200 --> 00:09:04.100 What we're talking about is the marking of a signet ring of a king. 00:09:05.280 --> 00:09:10.259 Where this signet ring would be pressed into hot wax on a document. 00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:16.200 Authenticating that document is legit and belongs to the one who sealed it. 00:09:17.080 --> 00:09:27.200 In fact, in the first century, slaves were oftentimes had a seal literally placed on their forehead to indicate who owned them. 00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:36.080 These seals are connected to authentic ownership, belonging to someone. 00:09:37.300 --> 00:09:43.940 So if you came in with a crisis of identity, oh, there's good news here. 00:09:45.980 --> 00:09:52.879 Whoever these 144,000 are, they are being sealed with the seal of the living God. 00:09:53.400 --> 00:09:55.400 We see that in verse 4. 00:09:55.399 --> 00:09:58.840 And I heard the number of the sealed 144,000. 00:09:59.179 --> 00:10:02.360 Sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel. 00:10:03.319 --> 00:10:07.459 These 144,000 belong to God. 00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:11.419 They are the legitimate servants of the living God. 00:10:11.419 --> 00:10:23.939 So the question begins, is this a literal 144,000 people? 00:10:25.019 --> 00:10:28.679 There are different people in this room who would hold different positions on it. 00:10:29.500 --> 00:10:35.599 Some people think that this 144,000 is a literal number of ethnic Jews. 00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:39.560 I personally do not believe that. 00:10:39.980 --> 00:10:47.519 I don't think the 144,000 is to be taken literally, nor do I think it is a reference to ethnic Jews. 00:10:47.519 --> 00:10:53.419 And the reason being is the way that numbers get used in the book of Revelation. 00:10:55.480 --> 00:10:57.600 They are more representative and symbolic. 00:10:57.840 --> 00:11:00.639 They are designed to get you thinking about something. 00:11:01.059 --> 00:11:03.679 So let's just think about that number 144,000. 00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:06.799 Right away, you know that it's a factor of 12, right? 00:11:08.059 --> 00:11:10.599 What do you associate the number of 12 with? 00:11:11.419 --> 00:11:18.779 For me, growing up, 70s and 80s, I associated the number 12 with two quarterbacks. 00:11:18.779 --> 00:11:28.639 There was the number 12 on the black evil jersey of Terry Bradshaw and the Pittsburgh Steelers. 00:11:29.339 --> 00:11:36.679 And then there was the number 12 on the white good jersey of Roger Staubach in the Dallas Cowboys. 00:11:37.459 --> 00:11:41.559 So when I hear the number 12, I think of quarterbacks in football. 00:11:41.839 --> 00:11:43.139 That's how I associate it. 00:11:43.139 --> 00:11:51.699 But if you have a Jewish background or you're familiar with a Jewish background, 00:11:52.600 --> 00:12:04.059 the number 12 is associated with God's covenant people, the 12 tribes of Israel. 00:12:04.059 --> 00:12:15.699 And when you have 12 times 12, it is a symbol of fullness and completion. 00:12:16.339 --> 00:12:18.459 We've seen 12 and 12 stacked before. 00:12:18.919 --> 00:12:23.979 The 24 elders around the throne representing all of the saved humanity. 00:12:24.639 --> 00:12:29.839 And when we get to the end of the book of Revelation, you're going to see another stacking of 12 and 12. 00:12:29.840 --> 00:12:38.300 It is the 12 gates around the new Jerusalem and the name of the 12 tribes of Israel on each gate. 00:12:38.720 --> 00:12:44.100 And then you have the 12 foundations of the new Jerusalem named with the apostles. 00:12:45.840 --> 00:12:49.440 God's Old Testament and New Testament people, the church. 00:12:49.860 --> 00:12:56.259 And of course, the new Jerusalem's gates are open to the nation's coming who bear the mark of the Lamb. 00:12:56.259 --> 00:13:02.600 That 144,000 is packed with meaning. 00:13:04.139 --> 00:13:06.439 And what I want to help you remember is this. 00:13:08.179 --> 00:13:15.340 The 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 tribes of Jacob, they come from Isaac. 00:13:16.200 --> 00:13:17.720 Isaac comes from Abraham. 00:13:17.720 --> 00:13:27.040 And it was to Abraham God promised in Genesis 12 and Genesis 22 that he would bless all the nations of the world. 00:13:28.379 --> 00:13:36.820 All the nations would come to worship the one true living God through the seed of Abraham, Jesus Christ. 00:13:36.820 --> 00:13:51.460 So when I come across this 144,000, based on my understanding of the scriptures, this is more symbolic of God's new covenant people. 00:13:52.180 --> 00:13:52.860 The church. 00:13:58.560 --> 00:14:00.260 Maybe another about 70 times seven? 00:14:15.660 --> 00:14:19.600 If you take that literally, you got 490 shots. 00:14:20.440 --> 00:14:26.139 So if someone sins against you for the 489th time, you got to say of the tribes in order to try to convince you even more. 00:15:33.619 --> 00:15:41.439 If you look at the listing of the tribes starting in verse 5 through 8, you'll notice that there's 12 tribes. the tribes is Genesis chapter 35. 00:15:54.480 --> 00:15:59.879 That's where the tribes of Israel were listed out for the first time in full. 00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:02.319 It's the gold standard. 00:16:04.159 --> 00:16:09.579 But what happens here, John seems to do some editing. 00:16:09.580 --> 00:16:15.379 He's moving some things around from that original list in Genesis 35. 00:16:16.740 --> 00:16:19.060 So that should make you wonder why. 00:16:20.280 --> 00:16:28.340 Because when you have someone who makes an adjustment like that, does an alteration like that, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, it's purposed. 00:16:29.800 --> 00:16:31.340 He's trying to communicate something. 00:16:31.340 --> 00:16:38.780 And what you have in this list is that there are two tribes missing another reference to foreheads, and there is a writing on the foreheads of these 144,000. 00:19:14.799 --> 00:19:15.559 Do you know what it is? 00:19:15.559 --> 00:19:30.940 With Him 144,000 who had His name, the name of the Lamb, and His Father written on their foreheads. 00:19:30.940 --> 00:19:44.880 This sealing happening in Revelation chapter 7 is the sealing, the placing, the writing of the
