preached with you, 00:30:33.559 --> 00:30:43.559 We have looked at the importance and the impact of the resurrection appearances of the Lord Jesus in the Gospel of John. 00:30:43.559 --> 00:30:46.559 We have looked at the account of Mary. 00:30:46.559 --> 00:30:48.559 We have looked at the disciples in the locked room. 00:30:48.559 --> 00:30:55.559 We have looked at the account where he appeared to Dante and Thomas. 00:30:55.559 --> 00:31:00.559 And now this is the fourth appearance that John records. 00:31:00.559 --> 00:31:04.559 This is the appearance on the Shoah. 00:31:04.559 --> 00:31:09.559 And chapter 21 in John's Gospel is the conclusion. 00:31:09.559 --> 00:31:12.559 This is his final sign of. 00:31:12.559 --> 00:31:16.559 This is the last thing he has to say to the reader. 00:31:16.559 --> 00:31:20.559 We have this closing purpose at the end of chapter 20, 00:31:20.559 --> 00:31:26.559 Where he says he has written all these things so that you may believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:31:26.559 --> 00:31:28.559 And have life in His name. 00:31:28.559 --> 00:31:32.559 But he has got one last thing to say. 00:31:32.559 --> 00:31:35.559 He has got one last thing Peter falls through in this chapter and forms an important part of this chapter. 00:31:55.559 --> 00:32:03.559 But John clearly segregates this resurrection appearance in the way he writes. 00:32:03.559 --> 00:32:06.559 John wants you to notice this appearance of Jesus. 00:32:06.559 --> 00:32:08.559 You look at verse 21. 00:32:08.559 --> 00:32:10.559 He starts off by saying, 00:32:10.559 --> 00:32:16.559 After this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. 00:32:16.559 --> 00:32:18.559 He revealed himself in this way. 00:32:18.559 --> 00:32:20.559 He's emphasizing this revelation. 00:32:20.559 --> 00:32:25.559 And then at verse 14, he breaks it and says, 00:32:25.559 --> 00:32:32.559 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. 00:32:32.559 --> 00:32:36.559 The third time he revealed himself to the whole of the disciples. 00:32:36.559 --> 00:32:39.559 The gathered disciples. 00:32:39.559 --> 00:32:43.559 So what's the significance of this passage? 00:32:43.559 --> 00:32:45.559 What does John want us to notice? 00:32:45.559 --> 00:32:50.559 Because John is the only writer that records this passage. 00:32:50.559 --> 00:32:55.559 And if he wants us to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, why is he recording this? 00:32:55.559 --> 00:33:00.559 Well, Jesus is distancing himself from the people. 00:33:00.559 --> 00:33:03.559 Jesus cannot stay in the world any longer. 00:33:03.559 --> 00:33:06.559 His appearances seem to become less frequent. 00:33:06.559 --> 00:33:08.559 Jesus cannot stay in the world. 00:33:08.559 --> 00:33:09.559 Jesus cannot stay in the world. 00:33:09.559 --> 00:33:13.559 He's instructing them how to live their lives without him. 00:33:13.559 --> 00:33:17.559 So the disciples are here. 00:33:17.559 --> 00:33:21.559 Thankfully, they're not in the locked room anymore. 00:33:21.559 --> 00:33:23.559 They've opened the door. 00:33:23.559 --> 00:33:25.559 They've faced the world. 00:33:25.559 --> 00:33:28.559 They've faced whatever doubts they had in their hearts. 00:33:28.559 --> 00:33:32.559 They've placed their trust in the Lord's words. 00:33:32.559 --> 00:33:39.559 And I am sending you, as we have seen previously. 00:33:39.559 --> 00:33:41.559 But we see them here. 00:33:41.559 --> 00:33:42.559 They've gone out. 00:33:42.559 --> 00:33:45.559 But they seem to be a bit lost. 00:33:45.559 --> 00:33:50.559 They seem to be struggling to figure out what the next steps are in their lives. 00:33:50.559 --> 00:33:58.559 And as we look at this passage here, there are three expressions that really shape this appearance. 00:33:58.559 --> 00:34:05.559 And the first of these expressions that are said by the character Peter is, 00:34:05.559 --> 00:34:08.559 I am going fishing. 00:34:08.559 --> 00:34:10.559 The first thing to consider. 00:34:10.559 --> 00:34:14.559 What Peter says, I am going fishing. 00:34:14.559 --> 00:34:19.559 I'm sure there are many men in here that have exclaimed that. 00:34:19.559 --> 00:34:21.559 I am going fishing. 00:34:21.559 --> 00:34:25.559 Whether it's out of frustrations or maybe just to get a break. 00:34:25.559 --> 00:34:29.559 But how does Peter say it? 00:34:29.559 --> 00:34:35.559 He's speaking to the disciples there, those that are with him. 00:34:35.559 --> 00:34:37.559 And there's seven of them there. 00:34:37.559 --> 00:34:41.559 The passage lists them at the beginning. 00:34:41.559 --> 00:34:45.559 They're at the Sea of Tiberias. 00:34:45.559 --> 00:34:50.559 This is also the Sea of Gennesaret, that we read of in Luke 5. 00:34:50.559 --> 00:34:53.559 It is also the Sea of Galilee. 00:34:53.559 --> 00:34:56.559 It's the same place with three different names. 00:34:56.559 --> 00:35:02.559 Peter is here saying, I am going fishing to the seven disciples that are with him. 00:35:02.559 --> 00:35:07.559 And you might ask, well, why are they here at the Sea of Galilee? 00:35:07.559 --> 00:35:09.559 What has left them here? 00:35:09.559 --> 00:35:16.559 Well, if you look at the other Gospels, Jesus tells them to go to Galilee. 00:35:16.559 --> 00:35:21.559 You'll find that in Matthew 26 and Mark 16. 00:35:21.559 --> 00:35:27.559 He instructs the disciples, I'll see you again at Galilee. 00:35:27.559 --> 00:35:29.559 So the disciples here, they're on the right path. 00:35:29.559 --> 00:35:33.559 They're doing the right thing at this moment in time. 00:35:33.559 --> 00:35:38.559 And for these fishermen to return to Galilee, it would have been natural for them to return 00:35:38.559 --> 00:35:40.559 to their place in where they had worked. 00:35:40.559 --> 00:35:44.559 They would have probably delighted to come back to that place that they had left, 00:35:44.559 --> 00:35:47.559 to come back to the shore of the Sea of Galilee, 00:35:47.559 --> 00:35:51.559 to come back and see the people whom they were familiar with, 00:35:51.559 --> 00:35:54.559 to come back and tell them all that they had seen. 00:35:54.559 --> 00:35:57.559 But as they come back, they start going off course. 00:35:57.559 --> 00:36:04.559 They start to wander back into their old way of life. 00:36:04.559 --> 00:36:08.559 You can just imagine, you can almost see them there, these seven men, 00:36:08.559 --> 00:36:12.559 sitting at the banks of the shore, wondering, what are we going to do next? 00:36:12.559 --> 00:36:16.559 Jesus has told us to come here. 00:36:16.559 --> 00:36:17.559 What's next? 00:36:17.559 --> 00:36:21.559 They have no real plan set before them. 00:36:21.559 --> 00:36:25.559 They don't really know how to carry out the work of Jesus 00:36:25.559 --> 00:36:28.559 and how to continue it. 00:36:28.559 --> 00:36:33.559 They fall back into their old work. 00:36:33.559 --> 00:36:37.559 You can see them just sitting on the shore, 00:36:37.559 --> 00:36:41.559 watching all the other fishermen heading out to a night of work. 00:36:41.559 --> 00:36:44.559 That was the most opportune time for catching fish. 00:36:44.559 --> 00:36:52.559 Peter's just sitting there, and you can just see impulsive Peter just exclaiming, 00:36:52.559 --> 00:36:54.559 I'm going fishing. 00:36:54.559 --> 00:37:04.559 Whether it was for food, whether it was just for something for him to do, we don't know. 00:37:04.559 --> 00:37:06.559 But he's off. 00:37:06.559 --> 00:37:11.559 And others say, we will go with you. 00:37:11.559 --> 00:37:17.559 And the end of verse 3 sums up that endeavour that they went on. 00:37:17.559 --> 00:37:23.559 They went out, they got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 00:37:23.559 --> 00:37:30.559 They all followed Peter back into their old way of life, back to fishing. 00:37:30.559 --> 00:37:37.559 And surely deep down within themselves they knew fine that Jesus had not sent them to Galilee 00:37:37.559 --> 00:37:40.559 to go back to being fishermen. 00:37:40.559 --> 00:37:45.559 From day dot when Jesus had called them, as we saw in Luke 5, 00:37:45.559 --> 00:37:51.559 he called them to be fishers of men, to leave the fishing boat. 00:37:51.559 --> 00:37:58.559 They're at exactly the same place in which he first called them. 00:37:58.559 --> 00:38:04.559 But Peter here leads them astray. 00:38:04.559 --> 00:38:07.559 He leads them back into their old lives. 00:38:07.559 --> 00:38:11.559 They maybe think this is the best thing to do. 00:38:11.559 --> 00:38:14.559 And the disciples all follow the wrong voice. 00:38:14.559 --> 00:38:21.559 And this is a point that we must all come back to again and again in our lives. 00:38:21.559 --> 00:38:24.559 Personally asking ourselves, who am I following? 00:38:24.559 --> 00:38:27.559 Am I following my own voice? 00:38:27.559 --> 00:38:29.559 Am I following what I think is best? 00:38:29.559 --> 00:38:31.559 Am I following someone else? 00:38:31.559 --> 00:38:37.559 People in this world chase after having followers online. 00:38:37.559 --> 00:38:40.559 They want to have as many people following them. 00:38:40.559 --> 00:38:43.559 But what are they saying? 00:38:43.559 --> 00:38:46.559 What are these people doing? 00:38:46.559 --> 00:38:50.559 Who are we following in our lives? 00:38:50.559 --> 00:39:03.559 And truth be told, it can look far more attractive than following what Jesus has set aside for us. 00:39:03.559 --> 00:39:05.559 Because the devil will tempt you. 00:39:05.559 --> 00:39:07.559 Certainly tempt you. 00:39:07.559 --> 00:39:11.559 To divert you from following Jesus at all. 00:39:11.559 --> 00:39:16.559 You read Pilgrim's Progress and you see Christian there and the battles he had. 00:39:16.559 --> 00:39:21.559 Trying to follow the path that was set out for him and follow the light. 00:39:21.559 --> 00:39:26.559 And they're diverting and they're getting themselves into all different trouble. 00:39:26.559 --> 00:39:32.559 The devil will tempt us away with things that look attractive and things that look easy in this life. 00:39:32.559 --> 00:39:34.559 But who are you following? 00:39:34.559 --> 00:39:39.559 And where is that person taking you? 00:39:39.559 --> 00:39:40.559 Tomorrow? 00:39:40.559 --> 00:39:43.559 In the week ahead? 00:39:43.559 --> 00:39:45.559 In the year ahead? 00:39:45.559 --> 00:39:47.559 Into eternity? 00:39:47.559 --> 00:39:51.559 Who are you following? 00:39:51.559 --> 00:39:57.559 This is a lesson here to keep following the right voice. 00:39:57.559 --> 00:40:01.559 To keep reminding the disciples here. 00:40:01.559 --> 00:40:05.559 Listen to my words and remember my words that I taught you. 00:40:05.559 --> 00:40:06.559 Follow me. 00:40:06.559 --> says to the disciples when they're questioning and asking one another what will happen to them. 00:40:35.559 --> 00:40:38.559 Jesus says, what is that to you? 00:40:38.559 --> 00:40:40.559 You follow me. 00:40:40.559 --> 00:40:45.559 Who are we following? 00:40:45.559 --> 00:40:55.559 These seven disciples went out into the sea of Galilee with great efforts, with great diligence. 00:40:55.559 --> 00:41:01.559 We learn from this passage that they fished all night long and now day is breaking. 00:41:01.559 --> 00:41:11.559 Peter was stripped naked, making every attempt to succeed in the work that he wants to do. 00:41:11.559 --> 00:41:13.559 But he's getting nowhere. 00:41:13.559 --> 00:41:15.559 They've got nothing. 00:41:15.559 --> 00:41:16.559 They're exhausted. 00:41:16.559 --> 00:41:17.559 They're tired. 00:41:17.559 --> 00:41:19.559 They're empty handed. 00:41:19.559 --> 00:41:24.559 But Jesus stands at a distance on the shore. 00:41:24.559 --> 00:41:27.559 The disciples could not make out who he was. 00:41:27.559 --> 00:41:32.559 And we have this conversation recorded between them. 00:41:32.559 --> 00:41:36.559 And he addresses them as children in verse 5. 00:41:36.559 --> 00:41:38.559 Do you have any fish? 00:41:38.559 --> 00:41:47.559 And they say that this address as children is more like an informal address to shout lads or guys. 00:41:47.559 --> 00:41:50.559 Guys, do you have any fish? 00:41:50.559 --> 00:41:51.559 Fish. 00:41:51.559 --> 00:41:58.559 But if you go to the Greek, it puts a different slant on that phrase. 00:41:58.559 --> 00:42:03.559 It translates really, do you not have any fish? 00:42:03.559 --> 00:42:05.559 There's a negative in it. 00:42:05.559 --> 00:42:09.559 That makes a bit of a difference when you're asking someone that. 00:42:09.559 --> 00:42:12.559 If I ask you, do you have sweets in your pocket? 00:42:12.559 --> 00:42:14.559 Yeah, I've got sweets. 00:42:14.559 --> 00:42:17.559 It's like, do you not have any sweets in your pocket? 00:42:17.559 --> 00:42:21.559 You know, the second one with a negative in it, it's like, you're not expecting it. 00:42:21.559 --> 00:42:23.559 Do you not have any sweets in your pocket? 00:42:23.559 --> 00:42:26.559 It's implying you've got nothing in your pocket. 00:42:26.559 --> 00:42:34.559 Jesus is speaking to them, asking them, guys, do you not have any fish? 00:42:34.559 --> 00:42:38.559 And when he says fish, it's not even a full fish. 00:42:38.559 --> 00:42:41.559 It is the smallest bit of fish that you could imagine. 00:42:41.559 --> 00:42:44.559 Do you not have anything at all? 00:42:44.559 --> 00:42:47.559 He's asking them. 00:42:47.559 --> 00:42:49.559 And they say, nothing. 00:42:52.559 --> 00:42:57.559 As a fisherman returning to port with absolutely nothing is embarrassing. 00:42:57.559 --> 00:43:02.559 And Jesus is asking them to admit their complete failure. 00:43:02.559 --> 00:43:09.559 We don't have a bean to show for all the work that we have done. 00:43:09.559 --> 00:43:14.559 You see, what following the wrong man left them with? 00:43:14.559 --> 00:43:15.559 Nothing. 00:43:15.559 --> 00:43:18.559 Absolutely nothing. 00:43:18.559 --> 00:43:25.559 So it's a lesson for us to consider who we are following, 00:43:25.559 --> 00:43:35.559 and what we will be left with when we follow. 00:43:35.559 --> 00:43:38.559 We must follow Jesus. 00:43:38.559 --> 00:43:41.559 We must follow Jesus. 00:43:41.559 --> 00:43:46.559 So that at the end of our day, we'll not be left empty. 00:43:46.559 --> 00:43:52.559 You can exhaust yourself chasing after the things of this world, 00:43:52.559 --> 00:43:55.559 trying to gather as much as you can. 00:43:55.559 --> 00:44:00.559 But at the end of the day, what's it going to give you? 00:44:00.559 --> 00:44:01.559 Nothing. 00:44:03.559 --> 00:44:05.559 Follow Jesus. 00:44:05.559 --> 00:44:12.559 The second phrase that I want us to consider is, 00:44:12.559 --> 00:44:16.559 it is the Lord, in verse 7. 00:44:17.559 --> 00:44:22.559 This is a phrase that John exclaims to Peter when he recognizes, 00:44:22.559 --> 00:44:24.559 it must be the Lord. 00:44:25.559 --> 00:44:29.559 He says, it is the Lord to Peter. 00:44:29.559 --> 00:44:38.559 Have you ever thought how you would react if someone said that to you? 00:44:38.559 --> 00:44:42.559 And someone said, if you were about your day-to-day work, 00:44:42.559 --> 00:44:46.559 and someone said to you, it's the Lord. 00:44:46.559 --> 00:44:48.559 The Lord is here. 00:44:48.559 --> 00:44:50.559 The Lord has come. 00:44:50.559 --> 00:44:55.559 On the day when the Lord will come, people will exclaim that. 00:44:55.559 --> 00:44:58.559 When it is, we do not know. 00:44:58.559 --> 00:45:05.559 But we must consider how we will react when the Lord does come. 00:45:08.559 --> 00:45:11.559 And it is interesting that when you come back to this passage, 00:45:11.559 --> 00:45:15.559 and you see how the Lord Jesus is revealed to them, 00:45:15.559 --> 00:45:20.559 it is not made by his voice, as it was to Mary. 00:45:20.559 --> 00:45:27.559 It is not made by his sight, as it was to the disciples. 00:45:27.559 --> 00:45:33.559 But it is made by his work, and what Jesus does for them. 00:45:33.559 --> 00:45:37.559 And in our lives, we desire to see Jesus in the flesh. 00:45:37.559 --> 00:45:40.559 We wish we could hear his voice speaking to us so clearly. 00:45:40.559 --> 00:45:49.559 But it is often his hands at work that enables us to say, it is the Lord. 00:45:49.559 --> 00:45:55.559 Because Jesus is unnoticed in this passage. 00:45:55.559 --> 00:45:59.559 Which is interesting, because the disciples have already met him twice already. 00:45:59.559 --> 00:46:04.559 And when you go to verse 12, they are sitting with Jesus on the shore. 00:46:04.559 --> 00:46:09.559 The disciples dare not ask him, who are you? 00:46:09.559 --> 00:46:17.559 Jesus doesn't seem immediately obvious to them. 00:46:17.559 --> 00:46:19.559 They have a question in their mind. 00:46:19.559 --> 00:46:21.559 Who is this man? 00:46:21.559 --> 00:46:23.559 But they know fine. 00:46:23.559 --> 00:46:27.559 Deep down, it is really Jesus. 00:46:27.559 --> 00:46:32.559 There seems to be something different about his appearance. 00:46:32.559 --> 00:46:40.559 And if anything from this, it is Jesus instructing them to not rely on the visual. 00:46:40.559 --> 00:46:43.559 Thomas was there in this group. 00:46:43.559 --> 00:46:51.559 Thomas was the doctor that said, I will not believe unless I see him and touch him. 00:46:51.559 --> 00:46:53.559 But Jesus is... 00:46:53.559 --> 00:46:57.559 Jesus' identity isn't so clear here. 00:46:57.559 --> 00:47:01.559 We can't say know you didn't call us to be fishermen. 00:51:00.559 --> 00:51:07.559 Jesus used this lesson to feed them, to instruct them, to guide them. 00:51:07.559 --> 00:51:11.559 They themselves were nourished by the results of their own mistakes. 00:51:11.559 --> 00:51:18.559 It was used for their own building up. 00:51:18.559 --> 00:51:23.559 Jesus cannot stay with them. 00:51:23.559 --> 00:51:30.559 But they find a lesson in the works of Jesus in their lives. 00:51:30.559 --> 00:51:40.559 And I'm sure there are many of us here who have seen Jesus work in our lives and have learned great lessons from it. 00:51:41.559 --> 00:51:45.559 You can look back in your life, and it's often when you do look back, 00:51:45.559 --> 00:51:50.559 and you say to yourself, well, it was the Lord. 00:51:50.559 --> 00:51:53.559 The Lord was there. 00:51:53.559 --> 00:51:56.559 But you learn from it. 00:51:56.559 --> 00:52:01.559 And maybe it was that you had made a mistake in doing so. 00:52:01.559 --> 00:52:08.559 You look back and the Lord has restored you and taken you and guided you. 00:52:08.559 --> 00:52:10.559 It's a lesson for the future. 00:52:10.559 --> 00:52:14.559 Now, we can't see him physically. 00:52:14.559 --> 00:52:16.559 We can't hear him audibly. 00:52:17.559 --> 00:52:19.559 But he is at work in your life. 00:52:20.559 --> 00:52:23.559 The Lord Jesus is at Everyone's, people have tried in all sorts of mathematical things in order to reach the significance for the 153. 00:53:42.559 --> 00:53:48.559 But I think it just simply means that the Lord provided for them abundantly. 00:53:49.559 --> 00:53:55.559 And the Lord will provide for you abundantly too. 00:53:56.559 --> 00:54:01.559 Whether it be in this life, or certainly will in the next life. 00:54:02.559 --> 00:54:04.559 The Lord will provide for you. 00:54:04.559 --> 00:54:08.559 And he will welcome you with warmth. 00:54:08.559 --> 00:54:12.559 When you come to him today. 00:54:13.559
