to think about this morning is the determination of a devout servant 00:01:31.839 --> 00:01:34.059 from this passage in Isaiah. 00:01:34.939 --> 00:01:38.179 So in Isaiah this morning, we're looking at the third servant song. 00:01:38.180 --> 00:01:42.880 And we see how this servant, this promised Messiah from the Old Testament, 00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:45.780 was so determined to accomplish God's will. 00:01:46.480 --> 00:01:48.660 And so devoted to God. 00:01:49.880 --> 00:01:53.120 And spoiler alert, this servant is Jesus Christ. 00:01:53.940 --> 00:01:59.780 Who would walk the face of this earth just hundreds of years after God spoke this message 00:01:59.780 --> 00:02:03.100 to the people of Israel through his spokesman, Isaiah. 00:02:03.099 --> 00:02:09.000 And the cry of God in Isaiah chapter 1 through to chapter 38 is, 00:02:09.139 --> 00:02:10.799 Israel, turn to me. 00:02:11.259 --> 00:02:12.599 Do not turn to idols. 00:02:12.740 --> 00:02:14.319 Come back to me and repent. 00:02:14.900 --> 00:02:16.039 The God who made you. 00:02:16.539 --> 00:02:17.699 The God who loves you. 00:02:19.019 --> 00:02:21.319 But Israel are absolute in their disobedience. 00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:27.659 Isaiah is warning Israel of the future events that are coming their way. 00:02:28.259 --> 00:02:31.159 They will be carried off into captivity in Babylon 00:02:31.159 --> 00:02:35.680 because of their rebellion and disobedience against God. 00:02:36.359 --> 00:02:40.300 So they are being warned that they will be slaves in a foreign land. 00:02:40.919 --> 00:02:42.579 They will not be treated with kindness. 00:02:42.719 --> 00:02:44.180 They will not be rejoicing. 00:02:44.859 --> 00:02:49.960 But they will be crying out with the words from Isaiah 49 verse 14. 00:02:50.060 --> 00:02:51.699 If you look over the page, it says, 00:02:53.000 --> 00:02:54.740 The Lord has forsaken me. 00:02:55.359 --> 00:02:57.479 The Lord has forgotten me. 00:02:57.479 --> 00:03:02.739 So when they look at the disaster in their lives, 00:03:02.899 --> 00:03:07.659 they will say again in chapter 49 verse 21, 00:03:08.339 --> 00:03:10.239 I was exiled and rejected. 00:03:11.079 --> 00:03:12.679 Who has brought these up? 00:03:13.519 --> 00:03:14.839 I was left alone. 00:03:16.199 --> 00:03:17.759 Do you feel the pain in those words? 00:03:17.819 --> 00:03:19.239 I was left alone. 00:03:19.240 --> 00:03:23.879 And it is into that mess that God speaks and his message is, 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:25.040 Israel, wake up. 00:03:25.760 --> 00:03:26.640 Listen to me. 00:03:27.620 --> 00:03:30.920 Ten times in this section from chapter 50 to 54, 00:03:31.100 --> 00:03:32.420 God says, listen to me. 00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:34.920 And listen to my servant. 00:03:36.420 --> 00:03:38.320 So God is calling them to listen. 00:03:38.939 --> 00:03:40.500 But why should they listen to this servant? 00:03:41.360 --> 00:03:43.600 What's so different about this guy 00:03:43.600 --> 00:03:46.500 that they should listen to him? 00:03:46.500 --> 00:03:49.680 Well, the difference, as we will see this morning, 00:03:49.800 --> 00:03:53.740 is that this servant is determined in his devotion to God. 00:03:55.240 --> 00:03:59.379 God tells us this by giving us three examples of who this servant is. 00:03:59.840 --> 00:04:01.139 God points out the character, 00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:02.960 the confidence, 00:04:03.639 --> 00:04:06.360 and the call of his servant. 00:04:06.840 --> 00:04:09.420 And all of these things point to the fact 00:04:09.420 --> 00:04:13.759 that he is determined in his devotion to God. 00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:17.779 So this morning, we're going to be presented with who Jesus is, 00:04:18.719 --> 00:04:19.779 what he has done, 00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:23.120 and we will be challenged by his determination to follow God's will, 00:04:23.180 --> 00:04:25.360 and we will be challenged to ask ourselves the question, 00:04:26.399 --> 00:04:28.899 do we even have a shadow of the character, 00:04:29.139 --> 00:04:30.779 confidence, and call that Jesus had? 00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:34.839 My prayer is that as we look at Jesus 00:04:34.839 --> 00:04:37.939 and the determination of this devout servant, 00:04:38.639 --> 00:04:39.860 that we would be challenged, 00:04:40.500 --> 00:04:43.420 that we would be transformed to become better servants, 00:04:43.420 --> 00:04:46.840 with more determination to follow God 00:04:46.840 --> 00:04:48.819 and live for Jesus. 00:04:49.860 --> 00:04:53.640 So the first thing that we see in these few verses in Isaiah 00:04:53.640 --> 00:04:55.240 is character, 00:04:55.500 --> 00:04:58.200 the character of God's servant in verses 4 to 6. 00:04:59.280 --> 00:05:02.500 So two character traits that we see in these verses 00:05:02.500 --> 00:05:05.040 are submission and obedience, 00:05:06.040 --> 00:05:08.819 that stem from Jesus' determination 00:05:08.819 --> 00:05:11.699 to act according to God's will. 00:05:12.319 --> 00:05:13.819 Look with me at verse 4. 00:05:15.120 --> 00:05:17.120 The servant speaks the word of God 00:05:17.120 --> 00:05:19.779 as a well-instructed tongue. 00:05:20.659 --> 00:05:23.540 He is in such a close relationship with God 00:05:23.540 --> 00:05:24.939 that he knows his words, 00:05:25.500 --> 00:05:28.639 and his words sustain the weary. 00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:31.599 So those who are weak, 00:05:32.139 --> 00:05:33.899 those who are downcast, 00:05:34.019 --> 00:05:35.099 those who are mourning, 00:05:35.240 --> 00:05:36.939 will listen to the words of this servant 00:05:36.939 --> 00:05:38.759 and will be restored, 00:05:39.579 --> 00:05:40.839 will be built up, 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:42.379 and will be encouraged. 00:05:44.560 --> 00:05:45.979 Is this not an encouragement 00:05:45.979 --> 00:05:48.139 as we think about the person of Jesus Christ? 00:05:48.139 --> 00:05:51.519 When we are at our weakest, 00:05:52.139 --> 00:05:54.180 when we are at our wits' end, 00:05:54.300 --> 00:05:56.459 when we are a helpless case, 00:05:57.459 --> 00:05:59.079 we can turn to him 00:05:59.079 --> 00:06:01.399 and know that his words will not condemn us, 00:06:01.579 --> 00:06:03.219 but they will sustain us. 00:06:03.659 --> 00:06:04.919 They will not judge us, 00:06:04.979 --> 00:06:06.300 but they will build us up. 00:06:08.319 --> 00:06:09.939 But these are not the empty words 00:06:09.939 --> 00:06:11.120 of a self-help author 00:06:11.120 --> 00:06:13.959 or a well-known motivational speaker, 00:06:13.959 --> 00:06:16.819 but these are the words of a servant 00:06:16.819 --> 00:06:19.180 who is wholeheartedly dedicated 00:06:19.180 --> 00:06:22.039 to God, to God's people, 00:06:22.500 --> 00:06:24.759 and who is lovingly encouraging them 00:06:24.759 --> 00:06:26.939 and us with his words. 00:06:29.560 --> 00:06:30.419 And in verse 5, 00:06:30.500 --> 00:06:32.579 we see the extent of Jesus' submission 00:06:32.579 --> 00:06:33.899 and obedience to God 00:06:33.899 --> 00:06:36.019 because unlike the nation of Israel, 00:06:36.159 --> 00:06:37.240 he hasn't rebelled. 00:06:39.079 --> 00:06:40.939 Verse 5, the servant says, 00:06:41.099 --> 00:06:42.740 I have not been rebellious. 00:06:42.740 --> 00:06:44.639 I have not turned away. 00:06:46.139 --> 00:06:47.759 So do you see what this would mean 00:06:47.759 --> 00:06:48.759 to the nation of Israel? 00:06:49.800 --> 00:06:52.340 They will be sitting in captivity in Babylon, 00:06:53.139 --> 00:06:54.579 distant from their land, 00:06:55.280 --> 00:06:56.360 cut off from the temple, 00:06:56.560 --> 00:06:59.040 surrounded by an army of pagan gods 00:06:59.040 --> 00:07:00.199 and false deities 00:07:00.199 --> 00:07:02.120 because of their rebellion 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:04.660 and because of their rejection of God. 00:07:06.060 --> 00:07:08.100 And God provides them with a savior 00:07:08.100 --> 00:07:10.019 who is perfectly innocent, 00:07:10.300 --> 00:07:12.120 perfectly obedient to God's will 00:07:12.120 --> 00:07:15.100 and perfectly submissive to him. 00:07:17.519 --> 00:07:20.699 This servant is a fulfillment of Israel. 00:07:21.740 --> 00:07:23.420 He did what they could not. 00:07:23.540 --> 00:07:25.259 Israel sought after other gods. 00:07:25.360 --> 00:07:27.500 They searched for truth outside of God. 00:07:28.500 --> 00:07:29.759 They rejected him. 00:07:31.860 --> 00:07:33.379 But God's servant, 00:07:33.500 --> 00:07:34.680 the promised Messiah, 00:07:35.100 --> 00:07:35.840 would come, 00:07:36.540 --> 00:07:37.180 save the world, 00:07:37.340 --> 00:07:39.160 speaking God's word, 00:07:39.160 --> 00:07:41.780 and he will fulfill what Israel could not do. 00:07:42.260 --> 00:07:42.920 He is perfect. 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.680 But how far does his submission and obedience go? 00:07:48.860 --> 00:07:50.600 To what extent is this servant 00:07:50.600 --> 00:07:53.380 really determined in his devotion to God? 00:07:55.379 --> 00:07:57.500 Well, the answer is right there in verse 6. 00:07:57.500 --> 00:08:10.480 Let that sink in. 00:08:13.480 --> 00:08:15.279 God's servant is so determined, 00:08:15.540 --> 00:08:16.800 so devoted to God 00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:17.819 that he
