chapter 16 left, which we'll break up into two parts, the first of which we'll tackle this morning. 00:01:19.659 --> 00:01:25.219 And we're going to see that Samson's behavior finally catches up with him. 00:01:26.840 --> 00:01:28.179 So our question is simple. 00:01:28.259 --> 00:01:33.620 Where is God's grace when our sin finally comes home to roost? 00:01:35.599 --> 00:01:37.819 With that, that honeycomb. 00:01:59.359 --> 00:02:03.460 And so that's why we read now Judges chapter 16, starting at verse 1. 00:02:03.459 --> 00:02:09.379 Samson went to Gaza, and there he saw a prostitute, and he went into her. 00:02:10.280 --> 00:02:12.780 The Gazites were told, Samson has come here. 00:02:13.780 --> 00:02:18.699 And they surrounded the place and set an ambush for him all night at the gate of the city. 00:02:19.459 --> 00:02:23.400 They kept quiet all night, saying, Let us wait till the light of the morning. 00:02:24.159 --> 00:02:25.500 Then we will kill him. 00:02:25.500 --> 00:02:33.379 But Samson lay till midnight, and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts. 00:02:34.139 --> 00:02:40.860 And he pulled them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that is in front of Hebron. 00:02:41.580 --> 00:02:42.180 Verse 4. 00:02:42.180 --> 00:03:04.219 And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of Verse 7. 00:03:16.139 --> 00:03:23.759 Samson said to her, If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, then I shall become weak and be like any other man. 00:03:24.900 --> 00:03:31.400 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she bound him with them. 00:03:31.400 --> 00:03:39.219 Now she had men lying in ambush in an inner chamber, and she said to him, The Philistines are upon you, Samson. 00:03:39.939 --> 00:03:44.560 But he snapped the bowstrings as a thread of flax snaps when it touches the fire. maybe five or six years ago, it was a Saturday. 00:07:14.120 --> 00:07:20.319 And I was in my church office finishing things up for Sunday morning. 00:07:20.579 --> 00:07:25.420 And a soldier in distress dropped by our church and rang our doorbell. 00:07:26.199 --> 00:07:28.459 And so he came in and talked to me for a little bit. 00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:32.420 And he was in distress because he had gotten a DUI. 00:07:32.420 --> 00:07:36.900 And so his military career was on the line. 00:07:37.160 --> 00:07:42.400 And his hope and his dream after his military career was that he would become a police officer. 00:07:42.640 --> 00:07:46.200 And he shared with me that that would likely be in question too. 00:07:47.060 --> 00:07:48.480 And so we talked for a little bit. 00:07:48.520 --> 00:07:52.800 And I encouraged him to join us that next day in worship to come on Sunday morning. 00:07:53.500 --> 00:07:54.580 He said that he would. 00:07:55.500 --> 00:07:57.420 I didn't see him that Sunday. 00:07:58.240 --> 00:07:59.840 And I have never seen him since. 00:07:59.839 --> 00:08:07.839 But one of the things that he shared with me during our time together was that driving under the influence was actually his regular practice. 00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:11.739 This was something that he did over and over again. 00:08:11.819 --> 00:08:19.379 It's something that he had become numb to until one day there were lights flashing behind him. 00:08:19.379 --> 00:08:30.100 Of course, that's consistent with what we know in general, that on average, someone drives drunk a total of 80 times before the first time that they're caught. 00:08:30.899 --> 00:08:37.580 I tell you this because it highlights a principle that's important for us as we come to Judges 16, which is this. 00:08:38.220 --> 00:08:42.899 You can escape the consequences of foolishness for a time. 00:08:42.899 --> 00:08:47.519 You cannot escape them forever. 00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:52.539 The rent really does come true. 00:08:53.579 --> 00:08:59.319 We collect the dividends on the choices that we make in life at some point. 00:09:00.519 --> 00:09:04.100 Sometimes they're positive and sometimes they're negative. 00:09:04.100 --> 00:09:10.100 Consequences, in other words, are a lag indicator, not a lead indicator. 00:09:10.740 --> 00:09:15.720 If you were with us back in the summer of 2020, you'll remember we were in the book of Proverbs. 00:09:16.139 --> 00:09:21.320 And when we were in the book of Proverbs, we talked many times about what it means to be wise versus being foolish. 00:09:21.320 --> 00:09:31.080 And fundamentally, the foolish person, the simple person, just does not know how to connect present actions with future consequences. 00:09:31.520 --> 00:09:33.680 They just cannot connect the dots on that one. 00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:38.260 The wise person, on the other hand, they know how those things are related. 00:09:38.400 --> 00:09:42.960 They know that what they do in the present will come due in the future. 00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:51.379 And so there's this time delay when it comes to foolishness, that it takes a while for consequences to catch up with us. 00:09:52.840 --> 00:09:56.000 And they will catch up with us. 00:09:57.700 --> 00:10:02.600 Samson has been foolish now for a number of chapters. 00:10:02.600 --> 00:10:15.940 And here in chapter 16, his lust, his arrogance, his disregard for his Nazarite vow all finally comes home. 00:10:17.060 --> 00:10:22.960 In verse 1, the beginning of the chapter, he's able to escape one last time. 00:10:23.300 --> 00:10:27.000 We're told, verse 1, that he goes into a prostitute. 00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:34.679 And we're reminded, again, that as a Nazarite, Samson should have this special dedication and focus to God. 00:10:34.779 --> 00:10:40.879 He should call to this level of holiness that is even higher than the average Israelite. 00:10:41.340 --> 00:10:48.440 And once again, when he should be taking senior level classes, he fails 101. 00:10:49.879 --> 00:10:56.240 Samson, again, entertains his lust, once again gives in to his urges. 00:10:56.240 --> 00:10:58.919 We find out, verse 2, he is infamous. 00:10:59.139 --> 00:11:00.519 He's been building a reputation. 00:11:01.019 --> 00:11:03.860 The people in Gaza know about Samson somehow. 00:11:04.580 --> 00:11:08.279 And so they immediately surround the place and set an ambush for him. 00:11:09.080 --> 00:11:11.600 It's a little unclear what's happening here. 00:11:11.700 --> 00:11:13.460 It's unclear what is being surrounded. 00:11:14.060 --> 00:11:20.460 It's unclear how it is that Samson is able to make it past these men who have set an ambush for him. 00:11:20.659 --> 00:11:24.960 How it is that he's able to just walk away carrying the gates of the city on his shoulders. 00:11:24.960 --> 00:11:32.780 What is clear here, though, is that we see in this passage the first record in world history of a CrossFit workout. 00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:38.240 Samson performs some sort of clean or deadlift. 00:11:38.920 --> 00:11:42.920 And then he does some sort of overhead carry or high carry. 00:11:43.139 --> 00:11:44.879 He has this great feat of strength. 00:11:45.160 --> 00:11:47.340 And he doesn't just do this for a short amount of time. 00:11:47.720 --> 00:11:52.680 Verse 3 tells us he carries it all the way to the top of the hill that is in front of Hebron. 00:11:52.679 --> 00:11:59.019 The top of the hill that is in front of Hebron happens to be 40 miles away from Gaza. 00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:04.959 In other words, Samson puts David Goggins to shame. 00:12:06.299 --> 00:12:10.459 He has great power, but once again it is wasted. 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:16.859 Samson uses his strength not to free Israel from the Philistines. 00:12:16.919 --> 00:12:17.620 That's his calling. 00:12:17.620 --> 00:12:22.560 He uses it to escape an ambush because of a prostitute. 00:12:24.060 --> 00:12:28.399 And this is the last time that Samson will escape. 00:12:30.080 --> 00:12:33.600 Verse 4, we meet Delilah who is very different than a prostitute. 00:12:33.659 --> 00:12:35.019 And she's different in this way. 00:12:35.139 --> 00:12:38.399 We are told what we've never been told before about Samson. 00:12:38.919 --> 00:12:39.740 He loved her. 00:12:39.740 --> 00:12:47.860 Samson has a relationship with Delilah beyond perhaps what he's had with anyone ever before. 00:12:47.960 --> 00:12:54.840 A problem though is we find out that while he loves Delilah, Delilah does not love him. 00:12:56.600 --> 00:13:00.799 Samson has become such a threat to the Philistines that these leaders come to her. 00:13:00.899 --> 00:13:02.759 Again, this is verses 5 and 6. 00:13:02.759 --> 00:13:06.860 And they say, look, all we need you to do is deliver the secret. 00:13:07.679 --> 00:13:11.519 If you can do that, you will have enormous wealth. 00:13:12.340 --> 00:13:14.639 You'll be set up for the rest of your life. 00:13:15.179 --> 00:13:18.360 All you need to do is deliver Samson. 00:13:18.879 --> 00:13:19.679 So what does she do? 00:13:20.200 --> 00:13:26.259 She realizes a once-in-a-lifetime offer when she sees it, and she immediately gets to work. 00:13:27.879 --> 00:13:31.019 If you've been with us, you should recognize the pattern here. 00:13:31.019 --> 00:13:37.179 This is not the first time that a woman has worked at Samson to find the truth. 00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:40.240 Remember chapter 14. 00:13:41.659 --> 00:13:43.699 Samson goes down to the Timnite woman. 00:13:44.220 --> 00:13:44.980 He marries her. 00:13:45.100 --> 00:13:46.120 She becomes his wife. 00:13:46.220 --> 00:13:50.199 Then he sets out that riddle, the riddle about the honey coming out of the lion. 00:13:50.860 --> 00:13:53.539 The Philistines are upset about it, and so what do they do? 00:13:53.860 --> 00:13:55.399 They threaten his wife. 00:13:56.079 --> 00:13:57.259 She persists. 00:13:57.879 --> 00:13:58.720 She gets the secret. 00:13:58.720 --> 00:14:04.259 Samson should have learned his lesson last time. 00:14:05.440 --> 00:14:13.600 Samson should know exactly how this story ends, and we see again how vulnerable Samson is. 00:14:15.600 --> 00:14:18.480 He's vulnerable to women. 00:14:18.480 --> 00:14:21.920 He lacks self-discipline. 00:14:22.960 --> 00:14:26.740 And so Delilah in 16 does what his wife did in 14. 00:14:27.060 --> 00:14:29.800 She needles the truth out of him. 00:14:30.940 --> 00:14:33.840 Now, she has to do it in four different cycles. 00:14:33.980 --> 00:14:37.080 In verses 7 through 9, we see the seven fresh bow strings. 00:14:37.720 --> 00:14:40.440 Verses 10 through 12, the new ropes show up. 00:14:40.440 --> 00:14:47.740 And then, perhaps the silliest, the most ridiculous of all, in verses 13 and 14, she actually weaves his hair into a loom. 00:14:49.180 --> 00:14:53.440 And the question in all of this is, what in the world is Samson thinking? 00:14:53.440 --> 00:15:02.440 I mean, in the very first episode, right, the fresh bow strings, there are these Philistines waiting to come out and grab him. 00:15:03.440 --> 00:15:05.780 This wasn't the case in chapter 14. 00:15:05.940 --> 00:15:11.380 He didn't have this reoccurring pattern where he could catch on to what the intention of the woman was. 00:15:11.600 --> 00:15:17.620 He should know after the bow strings that this is not the game for him to be playing. 00:15:17.620 --> 00:15:19.659 And yet he continues. 00:15:20.100 --> 00:15:23.259 He goes on for cycle after cycle. 00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:26.399 Does Samson realize what is happening? 00:15:28.259 --> 00:15:32.600 Of course, there's multiple theories here about what exactly is going through his mind. 00:15:33.019 --> 00:15:36.539 Maybe some people think Samson thinks this is a game that they're playing. 00:15:37.279 --> 00:15:39.659 This is just, you know, ha-ha, funny-funny, right? 00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:43.379 Maybe Samson does know that this is for real. 00:15:43.680 --> 00:15:44.600 Maybe he doesn't care. 00:15:44.600 --> 00:15:51.060 Maybe he knows it's for real, and he assumes that it's going to be okay regardless of what happens. 00:15:52.240 --> 00:15:59.960 No matter what is in Samson's mind, we find the key to this passage in verse 20. 00:16:01.680 --> doesn't matter because Samson is convinced that he is invincible. 00:16:21.799 --> 00:16:24.899 Samson may have the body of a man. 00:16:26.340 --> 00:16:30.519 Samson has the mind of a child or an adolescent. 00:16:32.460 --> 00:16:34.600 Samson may be a strong man. 00:16:35.759 --> 00:16:38.159 He is not a smart man. 00:16:38.620 --> 00:16:45.060 Samson loves the gift that God has given him, 00:16:45.600 --> 00:16:49.779 and he ignores all the instructions that come with it. 00:16:51.860 --> 00:16:53.419 Samson loves the gift. 00:16:54.799 --> 00:16:55.840 He forgets the giver. 00:16:57.600 --> 00:17:02.560 Samson begins to believe that it's all in his own strength. 00:17:02.559 --> 00:17:03.559 Samson is a smart man. 00:17:03.559 --> 00:17:04.559 Samson is a smart man. 00:17:04.559 --> 00:17:05.559 He is Samson. 00:17:05.559 --> 00:17:10.899 Samson, of course, nothing bad will happen. 00:17:10.900 --> 00:17:20.840 That helps us understand the final cycle here, verses 15 through 17, where he reveals the secret of his hair. 00:17:21.660 --> 00:17:25.700 Delilah comes to him with what is actually quite a compelling argument. 00:17:26.220 --> 00:17:27.960 In verses 15 and 16, she says, 00:17:28.060 --> 00:17:32.380 How can you say I love you when your heart is not with me? 00:17:32.380 --> 00:17:37.580 And what she's appealing to here is the same principle that's actually set in law. 00:17:37.940 --> 00:17:43.800 There's a reason why legally a husband and a wife cannot testify against each other in court. 00:17:44.140 --> 00:17:50.820 Because there's supposed to be this intimacy and trust and connection, right, that nothing can get at. 00:17:50.819 --> 00:17:54.500 That there's not just a union physically. 00:17:54.679 --> 00:17:58.319 There's this union mentally, spiritually, emotionally. 00:17:58.599 --> 00:18:02.779 That we don't want anything interfering with free exchange. 00:18:02.919 --> 00:18:06.759 That's why we wouldn't want someone to testify against their spouse. 00:18:07.500 --> 00:18:08.939 And so Delilah here is saying this. 00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:11.819 Hey, I don't want just our bodies to be one. 00:18:12.539 --> 00:18:17.539 I want our minds and our hearts to be one as well. 00:18:17.539 --> 00:18:21.240 And so that's why she tells him, verse 15, 00:18:21.379 --> 00:18:23.759 Your heart is not with me. 00:18:24.839 --> 00:18:26.700 He gives in, verse 17, 00:18:26.940 --> 00:18:29.859 He told her all his heart. 00:18:31.559 --> 00:18:34.839 Now there's a lot more than this going on in chapter 16, 00:18:34.839 --> 00:18:39.099 but I don't want us to miss the warning that's here, which is this. 00:18:40.519 --> 00:18:46.619 Our sexual relationships cause us to lower our guard 00:18:46.619 --> 00:18:48.939 and to trust the person we're with. 00:18:50.119 --> 00:18:51.479 That's part of God's design. 00:18:52.359 --> 00:18:54.419 It's meant to do that, right? 00:18:54.479 --> 00:19:00.719 It's meant to build this trust and intimacy and community between a husband and a wife. 00:19:02.299 --> 00:19:05.319 And it can be used against us. 00:19:06.699 --> 00:19:12.199 There's a reason why spy agencies know that the honeypot is an effective strategy. 00:19:12.200 --> 00:19:19.580 Even more than that, this is the reason the Bible warns us over and over again 00:19:19.580 --> 00:19:21.960 about marrying someone who's not a Christian. 00:19:23.100 --> 00:19:29.400 Because if anyone has power to draw us away from the Lord, it is them. 00:19:30.539 --> 00:19:35.640 If anyone has power to 00:20:01.880 We could focus this morning as we look at Samson on his sexual sin, and that's here. 00:20:01.880 --> 00:20:05.480 But then we would miss Samson's great arrogance, right? 00:20:06.500 --> 00:20:08.660 Of course, we could focus on his arrogance, 00:20:08.980 --> 00:20:10.940 but there's even more in this passage than that. 00:20:10.980 --> 00:20:16.000 If we focused on just sex and arrogance, we would miss Samson's foolishness. 00:20:17.140 --> 00:20:19.820 And if we focus just on his foolishness, 00:20:19.860 --> 00:20:23.660 we would miss what's at the heart of Samson's
