straight for the temple. 00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:25.439 Chapter 20, verse 1. 00:05:25.819 --> 00:05:30.199 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts 00:05:30.199 --> 00:05:32.379 and proclaiming the good news. 00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:39.000 The temple was the centre and focus of all religious and social life. 00:05:40.779 --> 00:05:44.659 It was also the home to what was called the Sanhedrin, 00:05:45.339 --> 00:05:48.359 which was a powerful ruling council 00:05:48.359 --> 00:05:51.839 made up of about 70 people. 00:05:51.839 --> 00:05:55.959 Although Sanhedrin isn't mentioned, 00:05:56.139 --> 00:05:59.899 the makeup of that ruling council is at the end of verse 1, 00:06:00.519 --> 00:06:02.899 where we read about the chief priests, 00:06:03.419 --> 00:06:04.659 the teachers of the law, 00:06:05.439 --> 00:06:07.239 together with the elders. 00:06:07.240 --> 00:06:13.120 They were responsible for overseeing all religious and social affairs. 00:06:13.120 --> 00:06:14.660 They were the rulers, 00:06:15.720 --> 00:06:18.079 the ones who held authority. 00:06:19.639 --> 00:06:21.600 They were like the church, 00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:23.259 the police, 00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:24.379 the law courts, 00:06:24.460 --> 00:06:26.040 all rolled into one. 00:06:26.319 --> 00:06:28.860 Get on the wrong side of the Sanhedrin 00:06:28.860 --> 00:06:31.840 and you could lose your life. 00:06:31.840 --> 00:06:34.759 Their word was final. 00:06:36.920 --> 00:06:39.819 But then if you remember from last week, 00:06:40.480 --> 00:06:43.319 Jesus has just arrived in Jerusalem 00:06:43.319 --> 00:06:47.120 and here he is claiming to be king. 00:06:47.960 --> 00:06:50.639 That he is the one who has supreme authority 00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:54.360 and that all people are answerable to him. 00:06:55.139 --> 00:06:58.319 That his word is final. 00:06:59.659 --> 00:07:02.939 And Jesus goes straight to the temple, 00:07:03.339 --> 00:07:05.039 the most public place, 00:07:05.779 --> 00:07:07.599 and confronts the Sanhedrin, 00:07:07.719 --> 00:07:09.459 this ruling council, 00:07:10.180 --> 00:07:11.579 on their home turf. 00:07:11.579 --> 00:07:15.639 This was a clash of authority. 00:07:17.199 --> 00:07:20.899 Now as we follow Jesus into the temple courts, 00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:25.079 we want to also see that Jesus is there 00:07:25.079 --> 00:07:27.919 confronting us. 00:07:28.839 --> 00:07:31.699 Two big things we're going to look at this morning. 00:07:31.959 --> 00:07:36.519 First, Jesus confronts us with his 00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:18.579 What were they so concerned about? 00:08:19.079 --> 00:08:21.759 Well, back up to chapter 19, verse 45. 00:08:23.319 --> 00:08:25.899 When Jesus entered the temple Passover time. 00:08:36.759 --> 00:08:37.279 Thousands, 00:08:38.039 --> 00:08:40.039 tens of thousands of people 00:08:40.039 --> 00:08:42.899 are making their way to Jerusalem, 00:08:43.179 --> 00:08:44.360 to the temple. 00:08:45.179 --> 00:08:46.580 And as they arrived, 00:08:46.740 --> 00:08:47.399 they would go, 00:08:47.500 --> 00:08:49.399 if they didn't have a sacrifice with them, 00:08:49.439 --> 00:08:51.100 they would have to buy an animal 00:08:51.100 --> 00:08:52.620 for sacrifice. 00:08:53.039 --> 00:08:54.220 But to buy, 00:08:54.759 --> 00:08:56.480 you had to have the right currency, 00:08:56.639 --> 00:08:57.820 the right kind of money. 00:08:57.820 --> 00:09:01.560 So those who had come from outside Jerusalem, 00:09:02.040 --> 00:09:04.580 first had to go and exchange their money. 00:09:05.680 --> 00:09:07.280 Get the right kind of currency, 00:09:07.460 --> 00:09:08.360 and then they could buy 00:09:08.360 --> 00:09:10.520 an animal for sacrifice. 00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:11.580 The problem was, 00:09:11.660 --> 00:09:12.720 the temple officials, 00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:15.400 which was overseen by the Sanhedrin, 00:09:15.500 --> 00:09:16.520 this ruling council, 00:09:17.160 --> 00:09:19.360 had it all fixed in their favour. 00:09:20.360 --> 00:09:21.900 It was a way of making 00:09:21.900 --> 00:09:23.900 lots and lots of money. 00:09:23.899 --> 00:09:27.519 So Jesus confronts them head on 00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:30.860 with the authority of his word. 00:09:31.600 --> 00:09:32.500 Verse 46. 00:09:33.319 --> 00:09:34.279 It is written, 00:09:35.159 --> 00:09:36.120 he said to them, 00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:39.980 my house will be a house of prayer, 00:09:41.059 --> 00:09:44.240 but you have made it a den of robbers. 00:09:45.419 --> 00:09:48.039 Look at what Jesus says at the beginning there. 00:09:48.360 --> 00:09:48.819 He says, 00:09:48.980 --> 00:09:52.360 my house will be a house of prayer. 00:09:52.360 --> 00:09:54.379 Jesus is quoting here 00:09:54.379 --> 00:09:55.740 from Isaiah the prophet, 00:09:56.180 --> 00:09:57.800 who was looking forward to a day 00:09:57.800 --> 00:09:59.379 when all people, 00:09:59.620 --> 00:10:02.000 regardless of their race and religion, 00:10:02.460 --> 00:10:05.580 would be welcomed to come to God. 00:10:05.840 --> 00:10:07.620 That has been the ministry of Jesus 00:10:07.620 --> 00:10:09.300 all the way through Luke, isn't it? 00:10:09.539 --> 00:10:12.259 He's been welcoming outsiders. 00:10:14.940 --> 00:10:18.259 Here's more of what Isaiah said 00:10:18.259 --> 00:10:19.659 in Isaiah 56, 00:10:19.759 --> 00:10:21.100 where this quote comes from. 00:10:21.100 --> 00:10:23.240 And foreigners, 00:10:23.960 --> 00:10:24.720 outsiders, 00:10:25.139 --> 00:10:27.620 who bind themselves to the Lord, 00:10:27.720 --> 00:10:29.080 who trust in the Lord, 00:10:29.840 --> 00:10:31.019 these are the people 00:10:31.019 --> 00:10:33.259 I will bring to my
