a little bit and we're going to consider two things. 00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:25.060 So this morning's message and next Sunday's message will be a little out of the ordinary. 00:00:25.059 --> 00:00:37.979 We're going to kind of widen the focus to the rest of the scriptures to see what they have to say on this thing that we've come to in 2 Timothy 3, verse 16. 00:00:38.140 --> 00:00:42.899 This idea, this truth that God has inspired. 00:00:43.640 --> 00:00:45.099 He has breathed out the scriptures. 00:00:45.320 --> 00:00:50.259 So this is the passage that we came to last Sunday, 2 Timothy 3, verse 16. 00:00:50.259 --> 00:00:51.739 Paul writes, 00:00:51.739 --> 00:01:04.000 All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, 00:01:04.480 --> 00:01:11.400 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:17.719 This is a passage of scripture that is so foundational to our Christian faith. 00:01:17.719 --> 00:01:26.719 It explains why we here at the Bible Church take the Bible so seriously. 00:01:27.239 --> 00:01:30.560 It is not just the words of men who lived long ago. 00:01:31.359 --> 00:01:34.519 It is the very word of God. 00:01:36.159 --> 00:01:43.200 As men like Moses and Isaiah and Peter and Paul were putting pen to parchment, 00:01:43.200 --> 00:01:49.579 God was breathing out his own words, speaking through them, 00:01:49.640 --> 00:01:57.859 so that what ended up on the parchment was God's own words to us, not just their own. 00:01:58.680 --> 00:02:01.280 The Apostle Peter said it this way in his letter. 00:02:02.719 --> 00:02:03.760 He writes, 00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:10.759 We did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, 00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:15.060 but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 00:02:15.860 --> 00:02:22.860 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the majestic glory saying, 00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:26.140 This is my son whom I love. 00:02:27.099 --> 00:02:29.599 With him I am well pleased. 00:02:29.599 --> 00:02:36.579 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. 00:02:39.719 --> 00:02:44.919 We also have the prophetic message as morning star rises in your hearts. 00:02:55.780 --> 00:03:25.759 Peter says, 00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:34.179 Peter reminds the followers of Jesus that all of the teaching about Jesus that he's been proclaiming 00:03:34.179 --> 00:03:37.679 isn't just some cleverly devised bunch of stories. 00:03:39.519 --> 00:03:40.500 Peter says, 00:03:40.620 --> 00:03:45.699 I was there on the mountain when Jesus was transfigured before us. 00:03:46.099 --> 00:03:49.099 I heard God speak audibly from heaven. 00:03:50.039 --> 00:03:54.939 I heard him confirm that yes, this Jesus was and is his son. 00:03:55.759 --> 00:03:58.599 And so you can count on what I saw. 00:03:58.699 --> 00:04:00.560 You can count on what I heard, says Peter. 00:04:00.759 --> 00:04:01.599 It's reliable. 00:04:01.780 --> 00:04:02.319 It's trustworthy. 00:04:04.179 --> 00:04:07.439 And then he goes on to talk about how we can completely depend 00:04:07.439 --> 00:04:12.259 and rely on the word of the prophets that we have in the scriptures. 00:04:12.259 --> 00:04:15.819 They too are reliable. 00:04:15.819 --> 00:04:16.939 They too are trustworthy. 00:04:18.939 --> 00:04:24.240 He's basically saying God really has spoken through human beings. 00:04:25.159 --> 00:04:28.639 The words the prophets wrote down, the scriptures, 00:04:29.139 --> 00:04:30.699 you must understand, he says, 00:04:30.779 --> 00:04:33.980 these words didn't come about because men just decided, 00:04:33.980 --> 00:04:39.680 I'm going to sit down and write a book about what I think is going on in my day. 00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:44.420 No, the prophetic words, the words of scripture came from God. 00:04:45.540 --> 00:04:51.879 And the prophets spoke and wrote as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit of God. 00:04:51.879 --> 00:05:00.920 What Paul and Peter are saying here is that God acted supernaturally 00:05:00.920 --> 00:05:07.600 over, under, and within the biblical authors 00:05:07.600 --> 00:05:14.659 to ensure that his own words were written and communicated 00:05:14.659 --> 00:05:17.180 just as he wanted them to be. 00:05:17.180 --> 00:05:25.439 God's own spirit, God's own breath are in the words of --> 00:06:20.560 Written under the direction of the Holy Spirit. 00:06:21.560 --> 00:06:25.379 We believe it is without error in the original manuscripts 00:06:25.379 --> 00:06:30.160 and is true and trustworthy in all that it asserts. 00:06:30.400 --> 00:06:34.500 It has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. 00:06:36.379 --> 00:06:37.740 Notice the wording here. 00:06:38.519 --> 00:06:41.199 We believe that the Bible is the word of God 00:06:41.199 --> 00:06:45.019 and that it is fully inspired. 00:06:47.019 --> 00:06:52.019 In other words, we believe that all of the Bible is God-breathed, 00:06:52.219 --> 00:06:56.199 divinely inspired, coming from God himself as his own word. 00:06:56.199 --> 00:07:00.719 And a lot of why we believe that comes from 2 Timothy 3.16, 00:07:00.819 --> 00:07:03.519 which we just saw on the screen and which we looked at last Sunday. 00:07:03.759 --> 00:07:06.939 It says all scripture is God-breathed. 00:07:06.939 --> 00:07:11.459 And so from Genesis all the way to Revelation and everything in between, 00:07:11.699 --> 00:07:13.660 all of it is inspired by God. 00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:15.839 All of it comes from God. 00:07:15.959 --> 00:07:20.339 It was breathed out by him as the human authors wrote on the parchment. 00:07:20.339 --> 00:07:24.500 It's fully inspired, we believe. 00:07:25.019 --> 00:07:29.979 Not only that, but we believe that it is verbally inspired. 00:07:31.939 --> 00:07:33.120 Verbally inspired. 00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:41.120 That is, that every word of the Bible is God-breathed, 00:07:41.620 --> 00:07:46.219 comes from God under the direction of his Holy Spirit 00:07:46.219 --> 00:07:49.620 as the human author wrote it down. 00:07:49.620 --> 00:07:53.759 And I want to explore this a little bit more together this morning. 00:07:53.860 --> 00:07:59.319 Why do we believe that every word of this book comes from God? 00:07:59.600 --> 00:08:01.519 Let's look together at a few passages. 00:08:02.480 --> 00:08:06.000 The first one comes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. 00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:10.240 As he was teaching his disciples and later the crowd that gathered. 00:08:10.980 --> 00:08:11.860 This is what he said. 00:08:11.939 --> 00:08:12.199 He said, 00:08:12.199 --> 00:08:17.479 Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. 00:08:18.439 --> 00:08:22.839 I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. 00:08:24.180 --> 00:08:28.899 For truly, I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, 00:08:29.159 --> 00:08:33.500 not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, 00:08:33.500 --> 00:08:40.899 will by any means disappear from the law until everything is accomplished. 00:08:42.019 --> 00:08:45.120 Therefore, anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands 00:08:45.120 --> 00:08:49.960 and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. 00:08:49.960 --> 00:08:57.660 But whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 00:08:59.460 --> 00:09:03.860 So there was some suspicion in Jesus' day that he had come to cast doubt 00:09:03.860 --> 00:09:11.379 on the word of God, the trustworthy word of Moses and the prophets 00:09:11.379 --> 00:09:13.259 that had been handed down to Israel. 00:09:13.259 --> 00:09:16.419 But Jesus says, 00:09:16.620 --> 00:09:17.500 Don't even think. 00:09:18.139 --> 00:09:22.840 Don't even think that I have come to do away with the law or the prophets, 00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:23.720 to abolish them. 00:09:25.019 --> 00:09:26.879 If you look at the law, 00:09:27.340 --> 00:09:30.080 that's actually the short name for the law of Moses. 00:09:32.819 --> 00:09:37.179 Referring to the first five books of the Bible that Moses wrote down, 00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:38.559 Genesis to Deuteronomy. 00:09:39.299 --> 00:09:40.200 And the prophets, 00:09:40.200 --> 00:09:45.980 this is also kind of a shorthand way of referring to the rest of the Old Testament. 00:09:47.480 --> 00:09:53.120 We tend to think of the prophets as only referring to men like Elijah and Isaiah and Ezekiel. 00:09:53.400 --> 00:09:56.160 But the biblical notion of a prophet is much broader. 00:09:56.160 --> 00:09:59.080 It would have included men like King David, 00:09:59.220 --> 00:10:00.800 who wrote the Psalms, 00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:01.980 and Solomon, 00:10:02.680 --> 00:10:03.620 who wrote Proverbs. 00:10:04.640 --> 00:10:10.020 It would have included anyone who truly spoke or wrote on God's behalf. 00:10:10.200 --> 00:10:11.280 To the people. 00:10:12.300 --> 00:10:13.360 And so when Jesus says, 00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:14.640 The law and the prophets, 00:10:14.900 --> 00:10:18.360 it's actually a reference to all of the scriptures that they had. 00:10:18.680 --> 00:10:20.500 The scriptures of the Old Testament. 00:10:20.980 --> 00:10:21.300 He says, 00:10:21.480 --> 00:10:24.960 I've not come to abolish the law or the prophets, 00:10:25.160 --> 00:10:27.840 all the scriptures that you have now. 00:10:28.140 --> 00:10:29.860 I've come to fulfill them. 00:10:29.860 --> 00:10:37.860 He makes it clear that those writings are not something he came to do away with or replace. 00:10:39.700 --> 00:10:43.820 God doesn't intend to replace the Old Testament with Jesus. 00:10:44.460 --> 00:10:50.279 He intends to fulfill what was written in those scriptures through Jesus. 00:10:50.279 --> 00:10:58.240 But now let's look at the way Jesus speaks about the Old Testament scriptures here in verse 18. 00:10:59.199 --> 00:11:00.480 The law of Moses, 00:11:00.679 --> 00:11:01.839 the writings of the prophets. 00:11:01.840 --> 00:11:05.460 Truly I tell you, 00:11:05.660 --> 00:11:07.660 until heaven and earth disappear, 00:11:08.660 --> 00:11:10.340 not the smallest letter, 00:11:10.700 --> 00:11:15.399 not the least stroke of a pen will by any means disappear from the law 00:11:15.399 --> 00:11:18.600 until everything is accomplished. 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:19.660 In other words, 00:11:19.780 --> 00:11:20.759 according to Jesus, 00:11:21.580 --> 00:11:25.080 every letter of every word 00:11:25.080 --> 00:11:27.040 matters. 00:11:27.039 --> 00:11:30.120 God intends to fulfill 00:11:30.120 --> 00:11:32.439 all of what he has spoken. 00:11:32.779 --> 00:11:34.019 Not just kind of, 00:11:34.599 --> 00:11:35.819 not just essentially, 00:11:36.339 --> 00:11:39.059 but down to the smallest stroke of the pen. 00:11:40.779 --> 00:11:41.360 In other words, 00:11:41.459 --> 00:11:46.439 not a single word of the revelation that God gave through Moses or the prophets 00:11:46.439 --> 00:11:47.419 is unimportant 00:11:47.419 --> 00:11:49.319 or irrelevant. 00:11:52.019 --> 00:11:55.679 We believe that the scriptures are verbally inspired, 00:11:55.679 --> 00:11:57.179 word for word. 00:11:57.539 --> 00:11:58.599 Every word from God. 00:11:58.679 --> 00:12:01.319 Let's look at another passage where we see this. 00:12:02.099 --> 00:12:04.459 Jesus on another occasion had a run-in with the religious, 00:12:04.939 --> 00:12:07.799 some of the religious leaders known as the Sadducees. 00:12:08.319 --> 00:12:09.599 And the Sadducees, 00:12:10.079 --> 00:12:12.620 who say there is no resurrection, 00:12:12.839 --> 00:12:14.139 came to Jesus with a question. 00:12:14.279 --> 00:12:16.879 So they denied the afterlife, essentially. 00:12:17.419 --> 00:12:21.039 They didn't believe in many spiritual things. 00:12:22.979 --> 00:12:25.039 And Jesus has a conversation with them. 00:12:25.039 --> 00:12:26.740 They come to Jesus and they say, 00:12:27.819 --> 00:12:30.360 Moses told us that if a man dies 00:12:30.360 --> 00:12:32.319 without having children, 00:12:32.819 --> 00:12:35.980 then that man's brother must marry the widow 00:12:35.980 --> 00:12:37.599 and raise up offspring 00:12:37.599 --> 00:12:39.579 for his brother. 00:12:40.679 --> 00:12:42.899 Now there were seven brothers among us 00:12:42.899 --> 00:12:44.740 and the first one married 00:12:44.740 --> 00:12:46.459 and died. 00:12:47.299 --> 00:12:48.579 And since he had no children, 00:12:49.039 --> 00:12:50.779 he left his wife 00:12:50.779 --> 00:12:51.659 to his brother. 00:12:51.659 --> 00:12:54.339 The same thing happened to the second. 00:12:54.519 00:13:01.199 right on down to the seventh. 00:13:03.139 --> 00:13:04.339 Finally, the woman died. 00:13:06.039 --> 00:13:06.779 Now then, 00:13:06.980 --> 00:13:07.919 at the resurrection, 00:13:08.579 --> 00:13:09.519 whose wife 00:13:09.519 --> 00:13:10.799 will she be 00:13:10.799 --> 00:13:11.480 of the seventh 00:13:11.480 --> 00:13:13.139 since all of them were married to her? 00:13:13.139 --> 00:13:18.039 This was kind of a hypothetical scenario 00:13:18.039 --> 00:13:20.539 used to challenge Jesus' belief 00:13:20.539 --> 00:13:21.799 in the resurrection. 00:13:23.559 --> 00:13:25.059 And Jesus looks at him and says, 00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:27.059 you are in error 00:13:27.059 --> 00:13:29.600 because you do not know 00:13:29.600 --> 00:13:30.659 the scriptures 00:13:30.659 --> 00:13:33.179 or the power of God. 00:13:34.539 --> 00:13:35.720 At the resurrection, 00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:37.000 people will neither marry 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:38.340 nor be given in marriage. 00:13:38.340 --> 00:13:39.860 they will be like 00:13:39.860 --> 00:13:41.160 the angels in heaven. 00:13:42.300 --> 00:13:43.560 But about the resurrection 00:13:43.560 --> 00:13:44.399
